In the last few days i have find out that my imei has changed to a fake one with 0044600.......i took the device to samsung and i was told it will be repaired . But then this comes from updating firmware that is not officially released by samsung. The question is why is that the developers on this site never find a solution to this. For me personally i will never try any unreleased firmware from this site any more. I meat 3 people at samsung with the same problem. The device is too costly for a malware from unreleased firmware either custom or what ever to damage the device. You developers you are doing a great job but why not try and find a solution to this, because i love installing new firmware on my device. I even paid 10pound to a so called i could repair your imei but all was rubbish. Am only warning you guys to be carefull with anybody confronting you with i could repair your imei all is rubbish and fake. The last result is samsung if the warranty is still on.
Mate, check your facts... it was you who screwed up your phone, you who cleared your IMEI, and you who made the mistake.
There are plenty of solutions for dealing with your IMEI (and the /efs folder), and that is to back it up. If you bothered to do even the smallest amount of reading before you recklessly started messing with your phone, you would have seen, countless times, people telling you to back up your /efs folder (which holds your IMEI, along with other important data).
Seriously, do not go accusing our hardworking devs, who spend countless hours of their free time working on projects for people, of f#<%ing up your device, when it was you!
...and get your terms right, it definitely wasn't "malware" that screwed things up.
Also, to all others who may end up reading this, sorry if it seems a little aggressive, but someone needed to say it.
It doesn't sound agressive to me at all. You couldn't have said it better. Backing up efs folder is an important step in flashing.
I personaly never messed up the folder, but I back it up everytime to prevent horror storries like this.
This is a touchy topic and i both agree and disagree with the OP.
The facts are that the developers do work very hard to get us the various flavours of ROM.. Very much appreciated...
Also there is a disclamer that flash this at your own risk....read forums before you do anything...backup stuff before changing anything...
But i also agree with the OP that there is room for improvement for few developers to fix their code causing IMEI to get erased/overwritten...
I hope i made the point without causing any distress to anyone...
Mates have you heard the term freedom of speech. Am not accusing no one.

And we have the right to tell you that YOU messed up.
Don't get me wrong, I do mistakes every day but I learned that I'm (and nobody else!) is responsible for my actions.
If you would have backed up your efs folder (as you were told) then you would have absolutely no problem. You could just restore the backup and your device would be working perfect once again.
You should also think why it works for so many other people if the software itself was the problem.
If you all will understand me from my point of view 1. am only warning people not to believe on anybody that says he could retrieve back lost imei. 2. i did back up my imei in three different folders but at end i could still not get back my original imei. 3 am not blaming the developers, am only saying they should try and improve on their firmware, . Sorry if i have offende anyone. I think it is my right to say what i think .

As an attempt to have a look at this issue:
How did you create that efs backup and how exactly did you try to restore the efs folder?
Am not in the mood to answer all this queries and question, I dont know how much u paid for your device . But all what i know is i bought my device for almost 500pounds and i think it is worth it not to damage it and more the less i see no offend in it trying to bring people in the right direction and not make the same mistake like i did. Many people have installed firmware ever since this device came out and since this site was created without knowing they have fake imei and without backing up their imei in the first place. The backing up came later on when people start to realise they sort of lost their imei due to one reason or the other. You can only learn from other people mistake.
@segunmichaelolu good day I hear your point but Im 100% behind most on here that any mod to your handset is down to you and any fault is down to you.
Look at it this way if all the codes for our handset or any handset come to that was made available to the developers you may still end up with mailfuction of your handset. There is a/are programs within this forum which will backup and restore said feathers. Everything you do is a risk warnings are posted look at it this way there may well be lets say 2000 people who have flashed their handset and out of those maybe 3 have run into problems. Fact there is always a chance things will and can go wrong..
Have a nice weekend,
The "guide to the Galaxy S2 and Android" which is stickied has all the info needed... other than the link to the method mentioned there, I think Nitrality has an EFS backup/restore function and there's also an "easy EFS backup/restore from your PC" type programme floating about...
There's always a risk something could go wrong when flashing however this can be mitigated by spending some time reading the info available. Sorry you had to find the hard way.

From what I've seen so far, this can happen to you while on original, stock, unrooted, never-ever touched ROM as well.
Each time the phone boots, the nv_data.bin in the /efs folder (this file holds the IMEI among a lot of other stuff we have no clue about so far) is accessed and being written to!
IMHO that's the main reason for all those EFS corruptions, it's nothing that's caused by faulty custom ROMs or even mawlware.

Am very sorry if i have offended anyone so far.

Hmm sounds interesting mate. If that would happen on a stock rom, too there would be a very serious issue as those with stock roms (without root) won't have any way of backing it up, thus really killing their phone's cell and wifi capabilites.
Maybe that's why they added the custom binary counter in the S2 ([email protected])

From what I gather from trolling on both XDA and the Tmo forums this update is bricking phones regardless of root, voodoo, ocfl, kernel perhaps people should avoid the update pending a more in depth investigation of what exactly is going on. If gps is needed flash the JI2 files found here and that should hold you over for now. This is a worse problem than the ones that came in the captivate and the sprint galaxy s.

I updated manually through odin and it worked just fine. I first went back to stock and started fresh. Gps test found six birds and locked on four thats the best I ever had sitting in front of my doorstep in a heavily wooded area. It would usually find at the most two and would not lock to any. So far so good.
Only speaking for myself.... I flashed it and it's fine. I hope this isn't just a bunch of people freaking out that phone stays at the Galaxy S splash screen for a while and remove the battery or something, thereby f*cking up something. But I don't doubt you.

Considering that the people who contribute to the XDA and T-mobile forums represent a fraction of the installed base, "overwhelming" may be an overstatement.
"Lots" of people also report successful installs.
i flashed through odin, so did my roomie, and his friend got the ota. everything went smoothly. i think that we are not hearing nearly as many people that the update went well compared to those who have had issues. we all had root, blackbar mod, mobile ap, captivate camera, and i had gps from ji5. no problems. do a nandroid and put it in a safe place then go for it.
Worked fine for me as well.

The only people who should probably avoid the JI6 OTA, are people who fail to understand they have a responsibility for their own potential grief when they mod their phones in ways T-Mobile and Samsung cannot easily account for.
Granted we should hold T-Mobile's butt to the fire if their OTA is indeed soft bricking or hard bricking bone stock unmodified phones, but I don't see any clear evidence of this at all. And it's not too surprising either, as very few people who come here have bone stock devices, and fewer still are willing to revert to bone stock simply to test.
Rather what I see are people utilizing these wonderful forums to do wonderful things to their phones without having to have developed anything remotely approaching a keen understanding of what they've actually done. It's ridiculously easy to mod these phones without having the first clue what you're doing. This leads to many mis-perceptions which easily turn into noise.
There is a level of responsibility you have to take upon yourself if you're going to participate actively in modifying your device. For some it's just easier to deny this responsibility and quest for someone to blame. That may not always be the case, but it's clearly taking place with some few people over this OTA.
Agreed. We are an incredibly tiny segment of the universe of smartphone users out there. The vast majority of people buy an iPhone or Android make calls, sync their contacts and calendar, surf the web, email and text. If you started talking about rooting or jailbreaking they'd look at you like you're insane. The people rooting and modding their phones are a tiny minority, and we assume all the risk when we do it because this is not normal and customary use of the phone. Most people use their phones stock, and people who don't are assuming the risk of things going bad.
I'm fairly convinced after the Captivate OTA fiasco that you put your phone at real risk of not being able to get successful OTAs if you flash custom ROMs or kernels. The deepest I'm willing to go is rooting and lagfixing, but even then I know I'm playing with uncertainty.

+1 to one of the most cogent comments I have ever seen here.
One footnote about the risks for ordinary end users: If T-Mobile's OTA process bricks a stock phone, apparently the carrier's typical procedure is to replace the phone. If the phone is not stock, the customer is probably on his own for a remedy. Pottery Barn rules are real. Smarphones are not cheap, and having your phone number tied to this handheld computer (or at least the carrier) by contract makes device failure harder to cope with.

I've flashed this phone more times than I can count at this point. Soft bricked it at least a dozen times. But all that self imposed grief has got me to where I am now, where I can (hopefully) reliably recover from just about anything. I still cross my fingers every time I crank up Odin3 v1.3, but I no longer visibly sweat!
We're fortunate in that these phones are surprisingly difficult to hard brick for the most part, and that given a bit of legwork one can recover from nearly any bad scenario.
It's better to flash stock ROM and then JI6 ROM manually like me and it works for me like a charm !

Then I don't know if what I'm about to tell you or not, but I have and use Titanium Backup and ROM Manager. Odin went through smoothly. That leaves the boot sound as the culprit. Had a couple of things metamorphed as well as mobile AP and the GPS files from JI2 installed, if that helps.

Could someone clarify the two things first what are the exact benefits I get out of it. would it take me back to what I had on my nexus --basic android. nd
Secondly would it void my warranty? If so is there a way of getting back to the original factory settings where they would not know?
Lastly there is no way I would be able to do this is there anyway of getting anyone else to do it in person or over the computer By giving me instructions I know there is a list of instructions but I was thinking more along the lines of seeing or speaking to someone
I would pay handsomely for this

1 - Simply rooting the phone would not give you the same setup that you had on your Nexus One, but it would allow you to get there. By rooting the phone, you are getting complete access to every partition on that phone and THAT is what allows changes to be made to the kernel and operating systems (aka ROMs). Unless you are a developer and know how to create your own ROM, you'd have to wait until one is created for us. Right now I believe there is one called Ice or something to that extent. You can check the Development section for that.
2 - Rooting technically does void your warranty, however there are way to get back to the original stock ROM/settings. There are threads in the Development section as well. As with anything that is in unfamiliar territory, take care and precaution when modifying your phone...especially if you use it on a daily basis and aren't sure of the exact steps to take.
Hopefully this was somewhat useful. Good luck!
Allen, and everyone, thank you
Yes, it does help
You say I can wait for one, or do my own, or use one by ??Ice.
Is that the one that was on the net, namely one like this, created by Scotty also?

1. Is that safe
2. Is the "flash" the thing that can get you back to factory settings
3. As far as the ? about getting anyone to take baby steps with you in doing this OR somewhere to take the phone to do it, has anyone heard of this.
Lastly, Allen
did you know anything about the phone locking up after a break, when using WiFi (EDIT: Oops thought I mentioned this in the post above. fwiw, anyone know why I can use wifi over the net quite well, using my browser (not to confuse using the wifi calling app, as one gent thought I meant. But then after a brief break, it locks up. even if I switch back to hspa. I have to restart. any ideas?)
Again, Thanks Allen, and all
If the only thing you know about rooting is "its very very good" then my suggestion would be to not do it just to do it.... do your research first, learn the basics and what its all about, yes there are pro's but theres con's. A simple mistake could leave you with a very expensive paper weight. All I'm saying is there's no need to jump in to it. root was around far before android and wont disappear over night. The only thing that I can't stress enough is research research research.

For a beginner developing your own rom would be extremely difficult/almost impossible... no other roms have been released yet except for the ice one but that is the exact same thing as what you have now minus the stock apps
One problem with using other peoples roms is if you can't read the code you really don't know what your putting on your phone... with XDA a decent amount of us can read code and would say something if we found it malicious but what if noone took the time on that specific rom? unless you can read it that just brings me back to you really never know
So I guess that answers your is it safe question... its safe if you know what your doing... and don't get me wrong I'm not tryin to make it sound scary it'll be a 1 in a million shot to find a malicious file on xda but it could happen
2 flash an equal to install ... as installing a rom flashing a rom

thanks. No, that just about answers it. very well, I might add. I will wait
what i meant, is if there is one that comes out, might there be someone who will walk you thru it, i.e for a newbie either thru chat, phone, or somewhere to take your phone to get it flashed with the new rom
oh ok i see, you would probably not want someone to do it for you because youll need to do it more than once... if someone walks you through it at least you learn how to do it and you'll be able to do it next time (and trust me theres always a next time) if your interested in doing it i pm'd you my aim name and id help you out with it... its really quite simply when its broken down... but like i said before id do some more research on it first and come up with some reason you personally need root access because its importance to other people may not mean anything to you n vice versa.
Hello, I'm new to the whole Android thing, but I managed to recently root my Shift, and I can attest to the addictive properties of trying out ROMS/Kernels and all that good stuff. But I was worried about the idea of all this flashing I'm doing, as in the month or so I've been rooted I've flashed about four ROMS, messed up a few times, done a good 5 or 6 Nandroid restores/backups. I was just curios to know if this is excessive, or if this could damage my phone in any way. Thanks for any help guys!
P.S., I apologize if this is either in the wrong thread, or has already been answered >_< I'm still a young'un
As far as I know by flashing a lot you can damage the relationship with your wife or g/f due to spending a lot of time doing it.. besides that I believe that the only way you can damage your phone is due to a bad flash or flashing something that wasn't exactly supported by the Shift.
I recall this discussion back when I had a TouchPro2, I don't know if it applies to the Shift as well but I assume it does. From my understanding it was determined by people far more informed than me that flashing would eventually wear out the NAND memory...but it would take more flashes than even the most fiendish flashaholic could complete in the phones lifetime to do. This is what I know from discussions of a past phone, I'm not claiming anything about the lifetime of the phone and take no responsibility if you flash 5000 ROMS tonight and your NAND burns out. lol
I think the only way you can actually brick your phone from flashing is if you flash a bad ratio from like a gsm carrier to a cdma phone. Might be wrong. Cause even if you flash a bad rom as long as you have a working recovery you can always just reflash a new rom or ruu
I think his underlying question may have to do with the fact that every NAND flash memory module has a limited number of writes in its lifetime before it can't write another bit and tell whether or not the module is in the 0 or 1 state.
This is also why data2ext/apps2ext etc anything that constantly writes information to your SD card will also degrade the lifetime of the SD card.
Basically yes, in principle the number of times you write new data to the phone's built-in memory, you shave off another write from its life. But I don't think this is significant at all. Just as a reference, I'm sure there are people with the original G1 who have flashed a countless number of times over several years and still have it working.
^^This.
If it gives you peace of mind, think about how many times a ROM chef's phone gets flashed in its lifetime and usually if the phone dies it's on account of flashing something experimental that bricks the phone (wrong radio, etc.) I've never heard of someones NAND actually burning out. I flashed my TouchPro and TouchPro2 quite literally hundreds of times if that makes you feel better.

You flashed the wrong software and the wrong partition table to it... You should've read up on the links you gave in your first post before flashing. Second if you'd read up on the flashing instructions on this site you would've known not to use a pit file unless absolutely necesary. And finaly when you encounter a file named s1_odin_20100512.pit which clearly has S1 (meaning Galaxy S1) and the date 12-05-2010 (which is before the S2 was even announced) that should've made you a little suspecious as to whether you had the right files.
You can send the phone to Smasung and hope they don't find out what happened. If they don't they'll repair it for free, if they do you're screwd and you'll have to pay for the repair.
ok mate,
u have 1 of 2 options:
1- u need to send it back for the service centre
2- send it for a JTAG service close to ur place

Omg, what a waste of a great phone.
Why didn't you actually study everything properly before doing anything like this to a top of the market phone?

Flashing should be a once a in blue thing, this phone is way to fast, does not need at ALL any speed enhancements, you Should fine just experimenting apps. I highly encourage everyone not to flash daily, enjoy what you have. don't loose $800 for nothing or have regrets.

Flashing is safe as long as you are able to read simple text and perform the task without errors by understanding the instructions.

I'm pretty sure our devices are idiot proof unless you go about doing absolutely absurd things like flashing the wrong files and repartitioning your device with a table of an other device. If the people would just read the risk is minimal. Like this OP who did his research AFTER bricking, if only he did it before hand. And what gets me the most, in 2 of the 3 threads he links to the answer is present. Wrong pit file need JTAG programming. But yet again instead of reading through the threads he opts to start yet another thread...

No way. I'm totally new to this and it's brain dead simple if you read at all. A million people have said don't use a pit file. But people do it anyway.

Good luck with that - your warranty is very much null, void and gone...

Unless they don't notice!
Just say it was a kies update gone wrong!
Then pray
I understand it will be out when its out, but I just migrated from iOS and I would always see postings from certain sites on when the next Jailbreak is coming. I am getting used to Android and I was wondering if anyone has heard anything and if not is this the best place to follow to find out?
There are already mf3 based roms...check the development section

If you are on the AT&T S4 that has been updated to MF3 we will have to wait until a bootloader exploit is found. There is NO ETA for this and it may take a while... maybe never. Just keep an eye on one of our many bootloader threads and pledge to pay the dev if you want to help motivate.
If you are on a custom rom and waiting for more keep an eye on the development section

I think the problem is that I purchased my GS4 and it came with MF3 pre-installed. Right now they have MDL Roms with MF3 features in it. Last I checked there was no way to flash custom Roms onto a phone that has MF3 on it!

Thanks for that information. That is a bummer to hear the realistic possibility that it may never come. I guess I would be extremely bummed as rooting is the main reason I came to Android and bought the S4. I was naive in the sense I thought all S4 were the same. Little did I know there was so many variations. I even came to the forums before I bought it but everything seemed like a foreign language coming from iOS.
Any idea who I might be able to talk to to Pledge some cash to see that it gets worked on?
And also is there any way to see a MOD about this captcha restriction lol!

Thanks for all that info. I am an idiot honestly that's all that can be said. I should have done a little more research before I made a purchase. I traded my iPhone 5 with a little cash on top for a brand new Galaxy S4 on AT&T (My carrier) had I known all of this before I would have searched Craigslist for a T-Mobile version and then sim unlocked it for AT&T...
Guess I learned my lesson, I really wish I could afford to go buy a T-Mobile S4 too but they sell for like $500-$600 out of contract.... Just can't do it and I am stuck with AT&T right now. Meanwhile my buddy who told me I should buy an S4 is laughing his rooted and recovered ass off right now lol...

What can you do with a root if you are not able to install custom roms?
Is there anything I could do in the meantime that would improve the functionality or performance of my phone?

You can install a lot of mods which will archive a lot of the same things as a custom rom. You can remove bloat, theme, add things... it is pretty awesome. See the development sections and the themes and app sections to see all the awesome stuff. Some people always stay with stock and just add mods

...you can also do some serious damage, and without recovery, you can easily "Brick" your device... Please be careful what you remove/change/mod, as if you bootloop or fubar your current OS, you will NOT be able to Odin Back to stock to recover just yet...
removing some of the Samsung Apps will break things when they are removed, and TiBU can't always put them back... for now I just froze all the bloatware, and won't remove anything until there is a way to go "Back to Stock"
Hope this helps.

Yeah, thanks for clarifying, I should also let the OP know I have the S4 Active which has the ability to ODIN back to stock if something goes wrong. I do not know if you will have that pleasure so think twice and read before trying anything
I have decided I probably won't take advantage of the root until I can safely make a recovery. I actually posted a $25.00 pledge (I know it isn't much) towards finding a fix for newer users of the S4. People who have to warranty their phones will likely have the update installed.
Crossing my fingers now.

This would be on hold for awhile until another bootloader fix surfaces, then you will see a whole bunch of MF3 custom roms.

That's probably a good choice and you can enjoy the S4 i337 without doing anything, it is a great phone.
Of course, rooting -basic rooting using the new technique for the MF3 rom-- seems to work well enough for many so far. So please don't view it as jumping off a cliff and hoping to find a vine on the way down or something so bleak.
For your model, which does not currently have as many recovery options as the earlier MDL versions, it certainly pays to be careful and also to understand your options for return or exchange if you do muck up the phone. The trick is to understand the specific risks up front. In this case, what can go wrong in the rooting process and how often does it seem to occur.
Read the XDA thread on this new rooting exploit for MF3 and see exactly what others did to get root without ruining their phone -and do only and exactly the steps that have worked for others. The rooting process takes only a couple of minutes --but so does bricking your phone when it rooting is done incorrectly.
The differences between success and failure are:
1. How much you understand of the procedure?
2. How much you have prepared in advance for what you are doing and trying to accomplish? and
3. How carefully and patiently are you doing each and every step of the process?
I've rooted several phones and tablets and been fortunate to get it right most of the time, or to be able to recover when I did not get it right. Unfortunately, in your case it appears that you need to get it right the first time for rooting, and many many folks have. So while this is very different from the iPhone "click on this site and you're jailbroken" approach, it is not low-percentage surgery either :good::good::fingers-crossed: So, I'd recommend that you continue to read up on that new root technique for MF3:
-- read to see how it is being accepted, what kind of feedback folks have and also
-- how safe/or comfortable folks seem to be in using it. and
-- what problems have come from trying it -bricks? soft bricks? recoverable or not?
I've read the original post (OP) on the exploit, but not all the information is in the one thread.. I am sure there are several threads that echo this development. . . Might have even more information too. After, that you will know if you want to try the rooting step. Or not.
Good Luck!
P.S.
- While root does not sound as valuable as being able to switch roms and use full customizations, it does provide quite a bit. For example: you can add (root-requiring) apps like "Titanium Backup" (which not only backsup all of your programs and data, but also can "freeze" programs that are useless and running in the background when you don't want them to do so!) Or Greenify, which has the same functionality for dealing with unwanted apps (better actually!) and apps like Cerberus to help you keep track of your phone or find it if lost.
- Rooting to add these types of add ons, without fiddling with some of the more invasive mods that others have already warned about in the other posts, may be acceptable middle ground for you -it does provide customizations for your phone without stretching the safe use limits very far.
Take your time. . . keep reading and move at your own pace. It's hard to come here, start reading and simply "get it" on first bounce. . .It's just a shame that your friend with the older S4 didn't provide a couple of hints or tips about which versions to by ("buy the red ones"... :laugh so you could have picked up one that is easily customizable. . .(of course if you are still in the 14 day window you might go back and try to exchange for another one and look for a MDL version -according to some posts they seem to be the red ones that no one wanted to buy early on . . . . hmm
Good Luck!

Well my Galaxy S4 on MF3 I actually bought on craigslist so the only exchange options are through the manufacturer. What I ended up doing was going to AT&T and using my upgrade to buy another S4 I just told the sales Representative to look on the side of the box for MDL software version or I was not going to upgrade. He was happy to make the sale. Now I have two s4
