I love how the iphone 4 looks in terms of its display. It's just so clear and catchy to the eye. Wondering how the evo 3d will stack up against it.
Hopefully it'll be good. I do agree, the iPhone 4 display is quite nice.
As much crap as Steve jobs talked about 4" screens I think he feel dumb now saying "people don't want Hummer sized phones". In America bigger is better so I guess that's why iPhone 5 is coming with a 4" screen LOL. IPhone 4 had HD retina displays so imagine a 4" version ohhh my.

So I know screen rez, size, and pixels is almost a science...one which I don't really care to figure out, but is the EVO 3D's display going to be "retina" quality?
Quick response: It won't be as sharp
I posted a summary of the EVO3D here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1004091 which has a section that explains the difference between the two displays.
Please feel free to ask questions and amend my posts as necessary

I don't think so bud, as far as I know retina has 326 ppi which is better than samoled screens. Qhd I believe is not as good as retina but is right behind. Correct me if I'm wrong. I found this for you though.

Retina and qHD are mostly marketing-ploy terms.
The display hardware themselves are actually relatively the same, but it's the resolution they display at which Retina and qHD refer to. qHD is "Quarter HD" which means a quarter of HD resolution which is something like 1900x...something around 1400?
Retina, in short, just means the resolution as well. But I think it's a certain PPI factored in as well.
Oh wait, I found all of that on the same thread you posted. DERPPPP

It(retina) definitely means something; iPhone 4's screen looks better than anything out there. Retina HD has the resolution of 480x320(iPhone 4 screen size). Obviously the evos resolution is greater than that so it wont look as good but I hear retina can only do 480x320 atm. Kinda seems like the greater the screen size is you have to sacrifice ppi/resolution. Its all still HD but not high Res like the iphone. I don't remember the exact specs but maybe someone who knows more about the displays can chime in for a sec

I have to agree 100% man. It looks very cheap plus I don't like the curves. I prefer the square look better on original evo. Maybe nexus for me also :-/

I'm no so sure it has more curves really. I think it is just taller and slimmer, creating a more rectangle look as opposed to curves IMO.

Kind of hard comparing two types of displays that are so different. Usually with 3D you can get a much better picture from a lower quality source because you are looking at two screens at once.
Specs don't really mean much in this case so the only thing way to tell is to compare them side by side. And so far the reviews of it so far say the screen looks great.

This probably isnt right but...
sqrt(960^2+640^2)/3.5 = 329.6 ppi for the iphone 4.
sqrt(960^2+540^2)/4.3 = 256.1 ppi for EVO 3D.
qHD = 960x540 pixels
"retina display" = cheezy term made up by Apple to throw at people that don't know what resolution is. it is in fact 960x640 pixels. they throw retina in there because the thought is that there are so many pixels in such a small amount of space that the human eye, or retina, cannot distinguish individual pixels and thus curves actually look curved and not blocky.
see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphic_display_resolutions
the iPhone 4's display will still be more crisp because of this pixel density on a smaller screen. I just want to know what kind of display (hopefully it's SLCD) it has in it.

Retina display is most definitely a buzz/marketing word for ppi/pixel density. Also, the iPhone 4 "retina " display is actually 960x640 (exactly 4x the number of pixels of its predecessors) . This made it a perfect conversion for legacy iPhone apps to produce 4 pixels for each original pixel. This is the main reason the iPhone 4 has that much pixel density. It's just a side effect of wanting to make the conversion process for legacy apps easier. Remember ios apps didn't have to support multiple resolutions like android. So why not make it sound cool. So, if the iPhone 5 has a 4" screen, I would bet it would still use the same resolution as the iPhone 4 for the sake of app conversion. (Unless they multiply the pixels by 4 again) . This of course would bring down the ppi making it hard to argue that the iPhone 5 still has a retina display. Therefore I think it unlikely it will have a 4" screen. That and it would make Steve jobs have to admit he was wrong about 4" screen phones. Also another point is that the ipad2 didn't get an upgrade in resolution.
Anyone else disappointed with the vibrancy of the colours on the Nexus 7? My phone is a Galaxy S II running CM9 with colour temperature calibration done via Fluxi kernel, and side by side comparisons of the Play Store splash page, as an example, really shame the Nexus 7. I know sAMOLED can account for certain differences but I was wondering if anyone knew of any way to colour calibrate the Nexus' screen?
I agree. The colors are a bit washed out and not calibrated correctly. Hopefully an update soon will fix this or at least have an option on the setting menu.

For me, setting brightness manually made a big difference. Out of box, it was flat and dull and boring. Comparing colors to my Viewsonic IPS monitor, seem pretty close.
comparing amoled to ips is silly. amoled is much better.
my galaxy nexus looks better but i don't plan to spend much time holding them side by side.
You can't get an IPS screen to have the same color vibrancy as a Super AMOLED.

I know its pixel density, and its just perfect to me. However, how is the color saturation and other aspects of the display? Ive read a couple of reviews that said it was a bit dull, but I don't totally believe these big tech blog reviews. If it is dull though, is there anything in the way of color calibration?
I think the colors are great. Of course, it's not an AMOLED, but it gets the job done.

Lol its got nothing on a Samoled but its definetly not bad, unless you get one that has a warm tone to it. My last c60 replacement had a warm screen, current c70 has a cooler screen and colors look natural as oposed to the bluer and more saturated samoled that im used to on the GNex. There is no color calibration as of yet.
Ok, that pretty much was the only thing holding me back from buying one, but not anymore Probably wont need it, but will we probably get some kind of screen calibration eventually? I just like tweaking things.
Edit: I saw that you mentioned something about the c70 version with the warm colors. Which version is the best one to get?
hello should move from a galaxy nexus to a nexus4 considering only the question of the display? I care that the display is really powerful, so I ask, it's worth it?
Hell yeah its worth it first day screen looks washed out but its getting better and better samething with nexus 7. Viewing angle on sunlight is just amazing even on 30% brightness whereas on gnex its all dark . black is pure so black oh did I say this phone is faster than the light ?

If you fancy that much the iPhone 5 you shouldnt be looking here in XDA mate
Iphone 5: 1136 x 640 pixels, 326 ppi
Nexus 4: 1280 x 768 pixels, ~318 ppi
Yes also Galaxy nexus has a 318 PPI but it's a pentile panel and details of screen is poor respect to other device.

Honestly I wish it had OLED, pentile or not. Im not very impressed by the blacks on this phone, and once it gets dark the screen doesnt look nearly as good as AMOLED, I would say my old low res galaxy s pentile AMOLED looks better after the sun goes down. Its also too desaturated for me, which is a frequent review complaint, theres no punch.
Most people seem to prefer IPS screens over pentile AMOLED but the blacks suck so bad in comparison I'll take deep blacks over jaggy text that you cant really see unless its right up to your face.
imo: blacks>>>>>>>>>every other aspect of a display

the only benefits of PenTile matrix AMOLED screens:
- black is extremely black
- maybe save an unnoticeable amount of battery
the only benefits of RGB matrix AMOLED screens:
- black is extremely black
- colours are vibrant in a cartoony way
- you dont notice pixelation, texts are crisp
- maybe save an unnoticeable amount of battery
benefits of RGB matrix LCD IPS screens:
- extreme viewing angles
- vibrant and realistic colours
- white is white
- you dont notice pixelation, texts are crisp
- colours dont fade
and since a lot of AMOLED uses PenTile, your options are between a ****ty amoled or an amazing LCD

My opinion if you want...
HD AMOLED screens are amazing... I was very disappointed to learn Nexus 4 was not using it this time.
If you did not own one before you might not miss it... but the contrast is sooooo much better then the kinda blacks you get on an LCD
Plus the technology is amazing... organic material that emits vivid colored light... vs... just white light shining trough color filters like LCD... this is a very old concept.
And you can only notice pentile under a microscope with HD screens

I know that everyone has different taste in screens, so you really have to look at it to decide which you like best.
I haven't seen the Nexus 4 yet, but I compared the Optimus G to the Galaxy S3 and HTC One X, and I thought that the Optimus G looked just as good as the One X. I couldn't see a difference in colors. Icons looked exactly the same to me. I compared the Chome icon on both and the saturation looked the same. I personally can't stand HD AMOLED, and I can notice pentile clearly on the GS3 from the normal distance I hold the phone away from my face and I find it very distracting.
I find the colors on the Optimus G very pleasing while the HD AMOLED in the GS3 looks dirty to me. The colors are too oversaturated and whites don't look right. I can't stand looking at the GS3 screen. I was very excited when I heard that the Nexus 4 was moving to IPS. I wish they could make an OLED with the same color saturation as IPS but the blacks of the OLED.
So, for anyone trying to decide on the Nexus 4, my advise is to go to the store and look at both the Optimus G and Galaxy S3 and decide for yourself.
i, for some reason hate amoled (pentile) screens. i cant stand the screen burn, over pixelated edges, and the "ink spot" effect it has on super dark colors. ill pick dull-ish blacks over those issues, and i dont like everything to be dark colored so it defeats the purpose. thats just my 2 cents though. lol
thats why i got so excited about the nexus 4 screen

Your told, lcd is brighter in sunlight which is the main reason your tokd Lcd is superior or at least thay say amoled is inferior. Wrong, its because if default settings by the makers. Once rooted with proper kernel(almost every device has em) you can do with amoled what you cant do with lcd. Double the color multipliers from android default of 200 to 400. I use in order of RGB, 320/320/400 to achieve perfect white and black. Also the battery myth, lcd drains less. Thats bullcrap. Amiled black pixel achives pure black because its actually OFF. that is main reason it uses less power than lcd. Instead if going on and on I will just show u proof. 2 different pic styles, img and jpeg clearly shows that even with a shattered and pentile matrix amoled screen its brighter in the sunlight. Even did my shadow in it so no one would say....sun wasnt out lmao. Sorry naysayers proof is in the pudding and the gooey pudding is right in front of your face. Proper kernel with amoled is brighter and better battery saver than lcd. Lcd is backlit anyway and most high end phones will use it in the future because it can be bended and manipulated and LCD can't because it is backlit. Only low end phones will be lcd in the future.
I agree with what you've said (I use Samsung phones primarily), but it is true that when displaying white, it uses 3x as much power as an LCD. On mostly black, you're correct; very little power draw.

Similar to plasma screen televisions, if you leave an image on the screen for a long time (much more than average), you'll see remnants of it permanently. However, if it's anything like televisions, you can fix it by displaying a white image on the screen (entirely white) for a few hours. I've never had this happen to me and ive owned almost all major Samsung phones. Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S II, Galaxy S III, Note 2, and now S4.

Yes burn in can occur on older like the gnex. Newer amoled is less likely but always set time out of 2 min when color multipliers are set to max. Best settings, for pure white is ,320,320,400 rgb color multipliers. Sorry should have talked about burn in,my apologies .
