I love how the iphone 4 looks in terms of its display. It's just so clear and catchy to the eye. Wondering how the evo 3d will stack up against it.
Hopefully it'll be good. I do agree, the iPhone 4 display is quite nice.
As much crap as Steve jobs talked about 4" screens I think he feel dumb now saying "people don't want Hummer sized phones". In America bigger is better so I guess that's why iPhone 5 is coming with a 4" screen LOL. IPhone 4 had HD retina displays so imagine a 4" version ohhh my.

So I know screen rez, size, and pixels is almost a science...one which I don't really care to figure out, but is the EVO 3D's display going to be "retina" quality?
Quick response: It won't be as sharp
I posted a summary of the EVO3D here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1004091 which has a section that explains the difference between the two displays.
Please feel free to ask questions and amend my posts as necessary

I don't think so bud, as far as I know retina has 326 ppi which is better than samoled screens. Qhd I believe is not as good as retina but is right behind. Correct me if I'm wrong. I found this for you though.

Dirk, how do you know the iphone5 will have a 4" screen? Is there info out on it already somewhere?

Retina and qHD are mostly marketing-ploy terms.
The display hardware themselves are actually relatively the same, but it's the resolution they display at which Retina and qHD refer to. qHD is "Quarter HD" which means a quarter of HD resolution which is something like 1900x...something around 1400?
Retina, in short, just means the resolution as well. But I think it's a certain PPI factored in as well.
Oh wait, I found all of that on the same thread you posted. DERPPPP
Sorry, just click the link in Dirk's post.

It(retina) definitely means something; iPhone 4's screen looks better than anything out there. Retina HD has the resolution of 480x320(iPhone 4 screen size). Obviously the evos resolution is greater than that so it wont look as good but I hear retina can only do 480x320 atm. Kinda seems like the greater the screen size is you have to sacrifice ppi/resolution. Its all still HD but not high Res like the iphone. I don't remember the exact specs but maybe someone who knows more about the displays can chime in for a sec

I'm no so sure it has more curves really. I think it is just taller and slimmer, creating a more rectangle look as opposed to curves IMO.
The Nexus S does look much more sleek tho..

Kind of hard comparing two types of displays that are so different. Usually with 3D you can get a much better picture from a lower quality source because you are looking at two screens at once.
Specs don't really mean much in this case so the only thing way to tell is to compare them side by side. And so far the reviews of it so far say the screen looks great.

This probably isnt right but...
sqrt(960^2+640^2)/3.5 = 329.6 ppi for the iphone 4.
sqrt(960^2+540^2)/4.3 = 256.1 ppi for EVO 3D.
qHD = 960x540 pixels
"retina display" = cheezy term made up by Apple to throw at people that don't know what resolution is. it is in fact 960x640 pixels. they throw retina in there because the thought is that there are so many pixels in such a small amount of space that the human eye, or retina, cannot distinguish individual pixels and thus curves actually look curved and not blocky.
see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphic_display_resolutions
the iPhone 4's display will still be more crisp because of this pixel density on a smaller screen. I just want to know what kind of display (hopefully it's SLCD) it has in it.

Retina display is most definitely a buzz/marketing word for ppi/pixel density. Also, the iPhone 4 "retina " display is actually 960x640 (exactly 4x the number of pixels of its predecessors) . This made it a perfect conversion for legacy iPhone apps to produce 4 pixels for each original pixel. This is the main reason the iPhone 4 has that much pixel density. It's just a side effect of wanting to make the conversion process for legacy apps easier. Remember ios apps didn't have to support multiple resolutions like android. So why not make it sound cool. So, if the iPhone 5 has a 4" screen, I would bet it would still use the same resolution as the iPhone 4 for the sake of app conversion. (Unless they multiply the pixels by 4 again) . This of course would bring down the ppi making it hard to argue that the iPhone 5 still has a retina display. Therefore I think it unlikely it will have a 4" screen. That and it would make Steve jobs have to admit he was wrong about 4" screen phones. Also another point is that the ipad2 didn't get an upgrade in resolution.

Hey guys been checking out the specs of GS2 and I like it..they have not confirmed which CPU its using and it maybe Samsungs or tegra.
anyways I would actually get this since atrix will take ages before hits UK BUT and i mean BUT 4.3 inc screen is putting me off. 4" is just about acceptable for me. Also that size of a phone is going to reduce the total sale of the handset, Even my friends who work in phone stores say they find it hard to sell bigger screen phone's. SGS was ok to sell because it was light and not that much bigger in total size then an iphone but they found it hard to sell phone's like Desire HD especially to female customers. I have GS1 currently.
Any one else being put off by larger phone?
It has been comfirmed that its gonna be using Exynos in some regions and Tegra2 in other regions... same for the Super Amoled Plus screen. Some regoins will not get that.
As for the size my hands are big enough.
I would say if your hands arnt that big i wouldnt buy it. Its like someone with massive hands using the Galaxy Tab for a phone.. it just wont work.

The difference in size between SGS1 and SGS2 is very small.
SGS2 is 2 mm wider, 3 mm longer but also thinner and lighter.
if only they release a 4.3 Exynos version and 4" tegra that would be sweet.. oh well gonna have to wait to see what else comes out soon.
I love big screen phones, using a desire hd and galaxy tab and tried once going back from 4.3 " to 4" and found that I very much prefer the bigger screen. Even though the battery on my dhd sucks the only reason I haven't switched phones yet is because I can't find any with the same screen size, but now that the galaxy 2 is coming I will get one to replace my dhd.
I'm actually eyeing the samsung infuse with the 4.5" screen but I don't think it will be released in europe :-(
Swyped from my sexy galaxy tab
I have a feeling this phone isn't gonna feel like a big screen phone, due to how thin and light it is. If your really worried just wait until you can paw one in the shops.
I hope atrix hits UK soon along with GS2 but in carphone warehouse, i have friends who can get 30% off
Steve Jobs, is that you?

Well I own an hd2, which has a 4.3" screen. It isn't big, and I have the hands of a teenage girl. It fits nicely, and isn't much of a nuisance in my pocket either. So I dun think you should really worry about the 4.3" screen.
Also, according to the Engadget article, the bezel is very small, so you get a lot of screen without carrying a cinder block around.

Certainly the size will be offputting to some, not me though.
Interesting that the increased screen size seems to be because of the real stripe matrix in use here, doesn't bode well for Samsung adopting qHD anytime soon does it?

I personally find the retina display and qHD nothing more than just a marketing gimmick.
When I had my 800x480 Desire next to my girlfriend's iPhone 4 I couldn't see the benefit of it. Websites often fit on the screen when in desktop mode, but most things were too small to read and I had to zoom in anyway just like I would have had to do on my Desire. The rest looked pretty much the same. But who knows, maybe it's just that my eyes suck.
In the end, I'd rather have a display that is better at saving battery rather than showing me detail which my eyes can't see.
I like higher resolutions for browsing/document display, more important with a view to HDMI mirroring, qHD on a screen this size should be able to display text that is readable fully zoomed out, so I don't buy it as just a marketing gimmick. Its not a biggy in terms of this phone, but when qHD becomes more standard and more apps are customised for it then it may become an issue, but thats really a worry for future handsets.

Iphone4 has much better battery life the desire, i had one for 5 months. retina display is the best overall quality display in terms of image and text quality. I'm an Android person and since i buy my handsets off line, i pay the higher prices for phones but any one says that there is a better display then iphone4's is talking crap because they just hate apple or they cant tell difference due to their eye sight.
Any screen that uses Pentile Matrix to me sucks, I love how amoled works but pentile sucks.
With qHD using pentile well i'd rather use super amoled plus but would need to see it inhand. Pentile is what is found on amoled and super amoled like desire/SGS, the text look poor when zoomed out and fuzzy with 800x480 resolution you normally shouldnt have to zoom in to see text on a 4" but you do. For me text looked better on desire then SGS because it was 3.7" at same resolution so the pentile was squeezed together in 3.7” .
I’v had iphone 4, desire, SGS and nokia n900 in front of me at once and I would honestly say websites and text looked great on n900 and you can read without zooming (landscape mode on all). Iphone4 image quality and text is fantastic you don’t even see a pixel due to the density. On desire and SGS you can see each dot that makes up a text or icon on desktop. But videos look great on super amoled and blacks well they look great as the led are turned off.

The HDMI mirroring and a higher resolution screen is a fair point. I know that when playing video it should output it in the video's resolution (so no mirroring), but I wonder how it deals with pictures.

Yeah, it does have a better battery life. The multitasking on iOS is more limited than on Android, so there's a better guarantee that there won't be things running in the background that are eating the battery away, and the CPU is down-clocked too. Furthermore they use Li-Pol batteries, which is something that I'd like to see on other devices too. However it is well known that AMOLED screens consume significantly less energy than any other screen technology available at the moment, so if you stuck one into an iPhone the battery would be even better.
But seriously, aren't you taking all this a bit too personally? I'm no Apple hater, not sure why you made me one. Just because I had an opinion that differs from yours? Well, how mature. I was merely stating what I found out when I was playing with the two devices, didn't imply that what I said was the holy grail and the only truth.
Not taking it personally but i just adding some information and my views

This is a determining factor for me in whether or not I'd invest on the Evo 3D. Some articles list it as a drawback from AMOLED screens, and I'm hoping isn't something present in all qHD screens. If you don't know what I mean, here's a link:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4165/the-motorola-atrix-4g-preview/4
Apparently, it has 2 subpixels, rather than the usual 3, which lead to poor color reproduction, etc. It is supposed to help with battery drain, but at what cost is it worthwhile? Some Atrix owners are pretty upset and feel 'cheated' on this qHD gimmick. What do you guys think?
ive seen plenty of pentile screens and generally dont notice unless im reading a lot of text or i have the screen really bright, if i stare at it its obvious but generally watching videos it doesnt bother me unless its a really bright vivid color scheme like in The Fall where the colors contrast and pop out, im thinking that if i get the 3d i will be using it so much at first pentile is all i will see after awhile
Bringing this info into my idiot's guide.
The EVO 3d supposedly used slcd (super pcs) so it shouldn't have that problem.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I'm very curious about this as well. I'm kind of on the fence on getting the EVO 3D, but if it turns out it's a pentile I'll likely wait. Hoping it's a super lcd, anything less would be ****ty on HTC's part.
Unless the specs are gonna change, Sprint says it'll have a qHD screen. Either way, it doesn't matter to me. I'm getting it.
http://now.sprint.com/evo3d/?ECID=vanity:evo3d
There's the link. Just click "View full specs."
qHD is just the resolution, it doesn't have anything to do with the type of screen it has.
With that pixel density, I'm sure you'll never notice a difference unless you're DIRECTLY comparing it to an iphone4. According to all those numbers, the EVOs screen is pretty lame. But I look at my screen every day and find it to be quite lovely. In a year or so, when way better stuff is out, maybe not so (I used to think the iphone 3gs screen was BEAUTIFUL, now it looks like **** to me). But I seriously doubt that the 2 year life of phones nowadays would be too long for me to put up with a pentile screen.
Having said that, I'll never get the EVO 3D or any other device with 3D attached to it. I truly don't care about 3D. And the kickstand is just way too dope to give up now

I'd like to get opinions about the SAMOLED+ screen on the Samsung Galaxy S2 from people that hate Pentile screens (like me ).
Do you think SGS2 is a lot sharper than SAMOLED Pentile screens? Does the text looks as good as in a regular LCD or SLCD screens?
It's important that the opinion comes from people that really dislike or hate pentile screens because it seems that not everybody notice the effect caused by these.

I don't get you.
The thing is that SGS2 doesn't have pentile but given that is the same resolution on a bigger screen and I'm not even sure if the pixel matrix is identical to a LCD I think that maybe is not that better at the end?
I'm just trying to decide if I buy the phone or if I'm better keeping a Nexus S (with a pentile display I don't really like...) until Samsung deliver the higher resolution SAMOLED+

Let's reverse the question. Does anybody like the Pentile display? From everything I've read its really just a cost saver for the manufacturer. So I'm guessing the answer would be no. At least not given any another option.
The screen looks exactly as LCD ..
After going from a Pentile display to a SLCD (N1 to DHD), I was shocked at how a screen with the same effective resolution (WVGA) could look so much sharper even after the size being increased by 0.6 inches. I began to understand why Pentile was getting so much bad press in tech circles and reviews. At the time I associated Pentile with AMOLED, as the only AMOLED based phones (N1, Desire, SGS) used a Pentile matrix and due to this my opinion on AMOLED was that despite the brilliant contrast, it was inferior to LCD.
It's safe to say that the SAMOLED+ reversed my previous opinion by ridding itself of the Pentile matrix. It's almost as if it is an entirely new screen tech. There's not much else to say other than once you see it, you will struggle to believe you could ever go back to a LCD/IPS or plain old AMOLED. The clarity and colour produced by this screen is second to none, regardless of PPI.
Regards.
I voted yes!
I liked the Screen very much.. but my eyes hurt after a while reading.
Think mostly because of the ghosting / washed effect from scrolling text.
i use a phone with pentile right now. i played with the samsung Infuse which has no more pentile, but is 4.5 inch. and honestly the increased pixels are wlecomed, but the larger size kinda eliminated the advantage over pentile. it just didnt look as good as i thought it would be. but it still looked ok of course, just not as sharp as i had hoped. definitely not as sharp as the atric or iphone 4. but the color contrast makes up for it a bit.
Comparing the SII and S is like night and day. Whenever I go back to use my S I can't believe how bad it is. You won't be disappointed with the SII trust me.

Nice tip about the browser!
I had the Atrix and half the reason I sold it is because I couldn't stand the terrible screen. I dont even notice the loss of pixels with the S2 because things seem so much more crisp, like the edges on icons and a lot of other things.

QFT. I also felt the text crispness of the S was quite lacking as against SLCD/LCD. But the SAMOLED+ of the S2 is really super. I cannot see any issues with text sharpness down to even small almost unreadable levels. I was sceptical about the 480x800 vs qhd of the sensation, and that too for a larger scree size, but was very happy when I switched on the phone for the first time. Text is pin sharp, colours absolutely brilliant. Cannot go back to SLCD.
In fact as another poster stated, sometimes the very high contrast is a slight pain actually. I wish there was a way to turn down the brightness even more for indoors / night use.

Cannot thank posts on Tapatalk yet so just want to say major thanks for bringing this app to my attention! As Sandeep says, for those of us who read Ebooks at night this is a life (eye) saver! No more nagging from the missus regarding my screen glare.
Back on topic, I've compared the screens of the Sensation and SGS2 first hand and in normal usage the increased resolution of the Sensation doesn't offer a discernible increase in sharpness over the SGS2. Those with eagle eyes will no doubt contest this, but in truth the overall clarity of the SGS2 panel is IMHO superior to that of the Sensation. That said, if a qHD AMOLED phone was released, I'd be all over it!
Regards.
Just been comparing my friends HTC Desire (pentile amoled) with my SGS2 side by side and my Samsung is noticeably more sharper even though my screen is bigger. Desire has fuzzy text and colours aren't as good.
I hate pentile displays. I had the original SGS1 and returned it within a week because of the screen, but didn't know about pentile displays back then.
I didn't really mind it on my SGS but once I got my Atrix I hated the screen, I don't care for high res as I can barely read as is, but the SGS II screen is amazing compared to the original SGS.
Strong opinion follows:
Wow, shocked.
The Galaxy SIII uses a pentile matrix, while the SII does not. The HTC One X does not either. The presence of a pentile matrix is something that most people dislike, for those who are new to the terms. It refers to a for lack of a better term, pixelated effect/screen door/slightly blurry/piezzo electric type of effect. People have a hard time describing it, but know it when they see it.
The HTC One X, a direct competitor to the S3, is receiving heaps of praise for its screen. In fact, many sites are calling it the nicest screen that they have ever seen on a smartphone (Anandtech and many other reputable sites).
I have seen the HTC One X, and it is without a doubt the nicest screen that I have ever seen as well. The iPhone 4/4S is STILL equally good, but it's just that it's 3.5 inches.
Anyway, I can not believe that Samsung would seemingly go backwards. In choosing the pentile matrix, which even before today had clearly been positioned as a less expensive screen, Samsung has sealed the One X as the phone to get for smartphone afficionados. Maybe not for the general public, but in my informal testing, everyone has noticed the pentile matrix.
As you can tell, I really loathe the pentile matrix, even at 1280x720p. I've used an iPhone before, so maybe I am spoiled, but I don't think it's too demanding to ask for a nice screen if you're willing to pay for a flagship device. After all, these devices are 90% screen. It's what you stare at and what you touch all day. I've also felt that the Samsung screens are too vibrant (not a big deal to me), but also too dim. As such, they probably could get better battery life purely b/c the max nits in the SII was only 300 nits vs 500 nits for the iphone 4 and one x.
Maybe Samsung has something else up its sleeve, but the S3 is to me no longer the phone to get. The One X with the Snapdragon 4 is definitely the way to go.
For Samsung's sake I hope that they did some market research regarding the effect of a pentile display on their flagship phone before deciding to cut corners.
I was all over the Galaxy Nexus until I saw the pentile. Waited for the S3 b/c surely that would have a premium display.
Sorry, self edit: there are more important things in life, but not as far as smartphones go :>
well, I also hoped for non pentile screen but it seems that right now it's not possible to make HD screens with non-pentile, if it was possible to make HD screens with real RGB then they would do that... and the One X use Tegra 3 not S4.
if you have used pentile before like on the original SGS1 or the Galaxy Nexus, (old HTC Desire, or several Nokia phones) and you liked it, then you'll love it
if you did not like it back then, you will not like it now, as simple as that.
I was hooked since SGS1
its it possible to notice the difference between non pentile and pentile screens at 720p?

it's a lot less noticeable, due the smaller concentration of pixels
but people with sensitive eyes for Green / Blue will still get annoyed by the pentile screen purplish, bluish or greenish hue, which i don't see it unless i put the screen 45 degree to the left or to the right

My opinion:
Definitely noticeable by everyone. Without question.
What varies is how much the effect bothers you, but will you see it, yes. Even on a 720p display.
If they made two identical versions of the S3, one with and one without the pentile, and cost was identical, service plan was identical, and let people see both before buying, my thinking is that 10 out of 10 people would choose the S3 without a pentile matrix.

yes it is at a close distance. it sounds all good in spec but at rendering videos i don't know why Samsung always gets it wrong with pentile display. every time its supercurio who we have to turn to due to Samsung's incompitance.

Took the words right out of my mouth.
Deal breaker. Check in galaxy note forum for pentile screen issues, banding & black clipping/distortion in videos.
I.switched to one x from note especially for black clipping in videos.
For info, Note is also using pentile hd screen.

why not wait for an official review/comparison before judging by ourselves?
Major killer point for the SGS3 IMO. Not impressed with Samusng. So much hype for this phone. And it disappoints.

Its not Samsung who dissapoint its the press and fans who do that for themselves. Same thing happens with Apple for each iPhone. This phone will sell in the millions regardless, its the iPhone of the Android world now.

This is a super phone. The Note had a great screen. If that's what you call pentile, then it's a great screen

I don't notice it.
But some do, they say once you see it, you can't unsee it, but since I don't, it won't be a factor in my decision.

The features of Samsungs touchwiz is what is going to set it apart. I played with a one x today and was sold it is an extremely solid phone, however im gonna wait and see what the AT&T gs3 is like before buying. I also want a phone with a large dev support/community.

Pixel density is too high
I'm guessing super amoled HD plus is still too expensive..the galaxy tab 7.7 has it..

Yes Its on my Tab 7.7
By far the nicest screen I have seen on any device.
Probably is too expensive.
Kinda weird HTC didn't go with a full 5" considering most new phones arw probably gonna have a 5" screen.

Coming from a tiny little iPhone 4, being 3.5 inches, 4.7 is already overwhelming. I also don't think I have that kind of room in my pockets since i wear Skinny Jeans. The biggest worry I've had so far with getting the One will be fitting it in my pants. xD Definitely not disappointed, and really its only .3 inches more. Not that big deal. It's still a gorgeous display. When i saw ZTE is releasing a 5.7 inch phone earlier i was wondering far people are gonna go until people are saying phones are too big. Only 1.3 inches away from the size of the Nexus 7. o.o

I agree I think it should be the full 5" but not at the expense of a bigger form factor, like more screen size w/ less bezel.
Well it may not be 5" but with the pixel density it'll be the most amazing screen. I can't wait to get my hands on it. I'm mad at my phone for not being the one! hmph!

I wish it was 5 inches as well... I can only hope the 4.7 inch design means its more ergonomic.
for me is best this way, better pixel, and size is great!
I think it was probably a good call, as much as I like 5 inches, I think this is the phone that iPhone users can be confident in, especially after I've owned the DNA and converted a few that I wouldn't have recommended to previous models because of their usage and what they want in a phone.
The 4.7 is a nice median size for those upgrading from smaller form factors and those used to large form factor.

I was disappointed that it was not 5". But Sense 5 looks great, the camera software looks great, the screen looks great, the design looks great, the speakers look (and sound from what I've heard on videos) great. As it stands, there is so much great about this phone, it is making me easily forgive and forget about the 0.3" missing from this phone. I expect and hope, the next One flagship will be a 5" screen..

4.7" screen is big enough for me. I barely even reach the notification bar when using the phone with one hand, yet my phone is only 4.3", what more if it's 5". Just don't put the One aside of those phones with bigger displays so you don't actually see that it's kinda small for you.

Great Heavens, listen to yourselves bleating on.
You've just seen first glimpses on one of the most beautiful phones ever built, and you're beefing about 0.3"
News flash - It's a mobile phone people, not a wall-hung TV screen - you'll never notice the difference.
If I have any dislike, it's that overpowering RSS Blink Feed, but that's easily sorted by flipping to the next screen. I just hope it doesn't swallow too much power.
Come on guys its htc you should no them by now there the only company that churns out the most models for smart phones in there range they will bring out a new model when s4 arrives my guess is HTC one XL and it will be a whopping 5.5inch screen 2 gig ram 2gz quad core 128 gig hd 1080p screen and better not forget 18 megapixel ultra camera if that's not enough eyes screen if you look up on the screen the screen moves up and down eye motion how I know all this ? I have to agree with all these guys. I had the One X, and man. All I had was an iPod before that, and I was like this thing barely fits in my hand. I got used to it, but it's the perfect size for a normal hand, not too big, not too small.
