Taking apart Atrix - Atrix 4G General

Hi everyone, I purchased a used Atrix not long ago for cheap and everything works fine with it but the exterior is kind of scratched up. I was wondering if anyone has had theirs apart to replace parts and if anyone knows where they sell the exterior shell? Thanks guys!

I have torn apart a few Atrixes to clean them and to replace some parts.
Pretty straightforward process.
You can find parts at cnn.cn website.
Google the Atrix disassembly guide. (sorry, I don't have the guide url handy)
Cheers

search youtube for a video i have found a few great ones on there

the atrix is very easy to disassemble just a few screws. heres a good guide with pics.

you can get parts from ebay or this online shop that ships from Hong Kong.

I have to do this because I dropped the poor thing in water. I quickly pulled the battery but it has minor hangups (lucky). Major hang up is that headset does not work anymore. I want to warranty and need to change the humidity strip. I will open it but the question is. Is there a deal I have to look out for? Sticker that will break when open maybe? Will att know that it was open thus voiding my warranty and worsev warranting an att FU?

How about not being fraudulent... that's a possibility. Some ins. companies do replace water damaged devices.. I know my AT&T does.

Do you guys have to pay $200 deductible on your atrix? I thought it was $50 like my iphone was.....I only paid $149 for it to begin with

Att uses a 3 tier program. Tier 1 devices are $50, Tier 2 are $150 and Tier 3 are $200. Atrix is a tier 3 device. So would the iphone 4s, galaxy s or any high end phone.
Its almost not worth buying the insurance. You can save yourself $7 a month and if it breaks buy a used one for around $200-$250 anyways.
But if its not physical damage or water damage att will replace it for free at a local service center in the same visit. I did this as my call speaker broke.

Nevermind **mo, after two days it's 100% functional. I thought the Epsom salt would have killed it when it dried because dry salt doesn't conduct. Got lucky.

Did you happen to notice the comment you responded to was just shy of being 2 years old? Thread necromancy seems to be a growing trend lately, which in itself wouldn't be a bad thing if the thread being revived had at least some trace of usefulness.

Thanks for clearing that up. I don't know why the thread got left unlocked. It served no purpose then, it serves less than none now.

What is the best way to manually brick a hero?

I want to brick my hero because all my paint is chipping off (end button, back button, and home button) and the dust under the screen is gettin bad. They told me that it cannot be fixed and there is nothing they can do because it is a known "cosmetic" problem and the insurance only covers functional damage. If I give them a non functional brick then I can get my hero replaced. I am running Fresh 2.0d if that matters.
So you want to commit insurance fraud?? Awesome!

go to the nexus one thread and search "radios" flash one of them through recovery. or a gsm hero rom. or RUU and pull the plug during it.

People like me have a family plan with 5 phones on it (all of them have insurance so I pay $35 a month in cell phone insurance for the past 5 years) and have not filed a single insurance claim ever. I am sure that the $300 refurb unit that they will send me will not kill them. Hell, I've paid roughly $1700 in insurance fees over the past 5 years and if Sprint and Htc would have fixed this problem when out was discovered it instead of sweeping it under the rug I would not have to be shady about it.
I just took mine to the service center and they fixed all that for free and it took them 15 minutes.

Check your household insurance for "portable item" cover clauses as we got stung by this when trying to claim for our laptop. Depending on if you have a big excess and taking into consideration premium increase it might be worth while just looking for a used unit on ebay that you can get an origional receipt with (for a local retailer obviously). Thats what i done and picked mines up for £300 with the keyboard dock. Take your chances but youve always got come back with paypal.

Galaxy S III gets announced next week, should have waited for that
even if you disassemble it, the parts are still stolen
if the phone's imie was blacklisted, the network surely most know to whom that phone belonged, the motherboard and all the money you make from selling these parts belong to the owner (or insurance company if it was insured), you should have returned it

It depends on all the facts.Theres loads on eBay about phones "only makes emergency calls/doesnt make or receive calls"-they all wont have antenna problems.
I am not selling anything,I am out of pocket(for services rendered plus cash) for the phone, and the postage to Roger.Im guessing the phone was blacklisted but Ive not checked-its just it couldnt make calls.
Ive known people "pretend" that their phone was lost/stolen,so its the buyer and insurance company that are ripped off.
I get phones offered to me all the time, and as far as Im aware,if I do a service and accept a phone as a "guarantee of payment" and people dont come back,I dont think its my fault if they have stolen it from someone else/pretended they have lost it or had it stolen.
I do see what you mean, but nobody I know has ever "bought" something 2nd hand then went straight to the Police or an Insurance Company to ask if its stolen or not.

The rear camera on this should be extremely easy to replace. You'll just have to wait a few more weeks until that part begins to make it's way out to us. You should be able to make the phone look just like new and it shouldn't cost more than $40 including tools.

That video shows how to do it yourself.
The part is very expensive though, about $250 for the screen and digitizer which are fused together as a single part.
Motorola will also fix this for you, but it will probably be around $300.

It is because of the edge to edge display and the way it's constructed as a fused single component that makes it expensive.
There aren't any cheap third party parts available for this phone yet and may not be any dependent on sales.

What type of damages are not covered by my warranty?
Damage and/or performance issues that result from contact with any liquid, water, rain or extreme humidity are excluded from warranty coverage.
Motorola will not repair or replace liquid-damaged products. They will be returned unrepaired.
By the looks of it, you are fine as long as no water got to it.

Are you per chance within 30 days of purchase of the phone? I think you can add insurance in that amount of time with Verizon (or even Squaretrade, etc.). I don't think that's the time to admit you already broke it, but...
I know it's money per month, but a couple of dollars for insurance sure comes in handy when the full retail value of these devices is taken into consideration.
If you're out of luck adding warranty, make some calls and tell them the truth. You'll get more help that way than lying. They've heard all the lies already.
From the more detailed warranty PDF:
b) Cosmetic damage, including but not limited to scratches, dents, cracks or other cosmetic damage
d) Damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, liquid contact, fire, earthquake or other external causes; including but not limited to: (i) improper usage or operation (e.g. operating the Product outside their permitted or intended uses as defined by Motorola, including but not limited to as set forth by Motorola in the Products' User Manual, Quick Start Guide, Online Tutorials, and other documentation), improper storage (e.g. subjecting the Product to extreme temperatures), abuse or neglect (e.g. broken/bent/missing clips/fasteners/connectors); impact damage (e.g. dropping the Product) (ii) contact with liquids, water, rain, extreme humidity, heavy perspiration or other moisture; sand, food, dirt or similar substances (except for Products sold as resistant to such substances, but only to the extent the damage was not caused by incorrectly securing the phone’s protective elements or subjecting the Product to conditions beyond its stated specifications or limits); (iii) use of the Products for commercial rental purposes; or (iv) external causes or acts which are not the fault of Motorola, including but not limited to flood, fire, earthquake, tornado or other acts of God, are excluded from coverage

What a horrible, immature, and disrespectful thing to say.
The OPer said he was going to embellish a story to potentially see if he can ascertain a new phone, but I am encouraging him to not lie.
Next I am looking out for his future phone, sanity, and pocketbook by advising to purchase a rubber case to protect the new phone because this is what I use and it works for me quite well.
I don't think you truly meant what you said so I forgive you.

I am not sure if Verizon allows this. But can't you like purchase extended insurance with in the first 3 months, that covers this type of damages ?
Buy that and wait a week then request for a fix ? That's what i see them fools do over at AT&T all the time to their iPhone 4 and 4S.
I don't advice to lie either. It may bite you back, karma sucks. But that's and option to look into.
Some similar issue happened to me few years back with T-Mobile, it was my fault didn't have any protection plans.
I told the service girl in store straight up what happened nicely, and that i am really in a pinch.
She did some magic similar to what i mentioned before. And said because i was with T-Mobile since VoiceStream;
She added the Insurance to my plan for 3 months back dated at a Discount, all I had to do is cancel it 3 months later.
Awesome =) u think
But my lessons learned. My Girl didn't like it too much that the Service Girl was so nice looks didn't help matters, and that she put her contact in my replacement phone ...
LCDs are expensive due to the new phone.
