[MOD] Full Throttle (Data Throttle Removal) Updated! 11/6/11 - Droid Eris Android Development

First and foremost thanks to wildstang for the how to for this mod. His original thread can be found here. He told me a long time ago I should do this on the Eris and I kept putting it off lol. I've made mods up for a handful of ROM's so far and will do more as I have the time or on a per request basis.
For starters here is a little about this mod:
1. What does this do?
This modifies the services.jar file located in system/framework, that allows you to have an un-throttled data access. You don't have to worry about modifying anything yourself.
2. Will this make my Data faster?
In some cases, YES. This has NO effect on actual phone signal. This only takes the throttle off, so you can download, or play games and not have to worry about it hitting a certain peak and lagging from that point on.
3. If I flash this, will it break my phone?
Sort-of. This will cause Force Closes when you try to select Mobile Network in Settings. Thats the only thing you should notice. You can still kill Data with a widget or any other sort-of alternative way you want to. This should not physically harm your phone though.
4. Will this work on any ROM?
Yes. This is not based off a particular ROM, and can be used with ANY HTC Droid Eris ROM. ALTHOUGH If you're Dev has made changes to the services.jar file, this could wipe those changes out. If you are unsure, ask your dev. In any case you may send me your services.jar and I will look at it for you.
Recommended Install procedures:
1. Place Rom on my SD Card along with DTR.
2. Reboot into Recovery.
3. Wipe everything that is supposed to be wiped.
4. Flash Rom.
5. REBOOT THE PHONE.
6. Skip setup and go straight to settings.
This part is important!!!
7. Go into Settings/Wireless & networks/Mobile Networks.
8. I set my data to always connected and data roaming on. Set yours to your preferences now.... keep in mind once you flash the DTR you will not be able to access this menu! Thats why its important to do it now!
9. Reboot into Recovery.
10. Flash the DTR and reboot the phone.
The key is to do all of this as quickly as possible. The reason why is because as soon as you boot your phone, your phone will start syncing. Its syncing your contacts and other stuff as well. Some of that other stuff also includes where you are on your usage of your data plan. If it detects that you are over limit it will then activate the throttle process. A little more on this. This DTR does not actually REMOVE the throttle per say. It simply removes the files that the phone system uses to BUILD the throttle. Without the needed throttle files the phone won't be able to set up the throttle which in turn means you will be running at full network data speed. Now do you see why this is important to do this quickly?

so just to be clear, if I never approach my data limit and therefore do not my get data connection throttled by Verizon, this patch will not do anything to benefit my general 3g data speed, correct?

I get a much better performance in my 3g speeds with this mod on my incredible. The ones that tested for me on the Eris said the same. Web pages loaded faster for them and streaming media was much better as well.

This and zepp's 3g turbocharger
Do I need to stop turbocharger before I flash this? and is this any different than the turbocharger? I did not see much of a difference on the turbocharger, and should I clear cache before I flash?

No you don't and no they aren't. Turbocharger for the most part is build prop tweaks to boost the data connection. This is a modification of the smali files within services.jar to remove the android internal data throttle.

I am using your rom, so no worries lol. and when you said that it will break the mobile data. does it mean that if I turn off mobile data on a widget, I can't turn it off or does it mean I just can't get to the settings and do it there?

seems like it is only google voice search.
It did make a difference, but you said that we can't access the menu of the mobile network. I went and clicked in there and I did not see a crash. is it that I can't change anything?

Supra kinda got put on hold for a little bit but I'm getting ready to start working on it again this weekend. Cm is running real smooth but has a bt issue I'm trying to straighten out. It's been a bug in the cm build for a couple of months now though. My personal favorite of my 3 roms for dinc is 666. It's based on the gb update and is every bit as smooth and fast as cm imo. Look forward to seeing you over there. You'll love the phone. It's sweet

I don't see why not... If you tell me what ROM you're using or send me your services.jar file I can make up a test one for you.

OP updated with new links... Getting much better reports on these this go around
I am doing much better. I used to get 100kbps and now with dtr and i guess 3g turbocharger by zepp. I get 900kbps-1mb!

Looking for best practices for moving from one ROM to another. Any easy way?

With all the great new ROMs out there, I am trying to figure out the best way to go about backing up and restoring my apps and all of my settings.
I do Nandroid backups, and those work find as a "snapshot" of my Hero. But is there any easy way to back up and restore all of my apps or settings in one fell swoop, without affecting the installed ROM?
I'm trying to find the best way to move from one DamageControl ROM to another, for instance. My current procedure would be to back up the phone, wipe it, then flash the new ROM. From there, I would have to use AppMonster or something to restore my apps. The downside is that that would have to be done manually, and plus I would still be without all of my custom settings.
So is there any easier way to go about this? I have tried flashing a newer DC ROM on top of an older one without wiping, and this seems to work okay sometimes, except for I tend to have a lot of quirks with the new installation then -- force closes and things of that nature.
Anyway, I'm sure you guys have developed some pretty smart ways to go about switching from one ROM to another without having to manually set things up each time, and I'm just trying to find out what's most efficient.
Thanks for your time!
I use titanium backup, I believe it lets you backup personal data as well not a 100% but pretty sure.
I just wipe each time, and install whatever ROM is the flavor of the moment.
I have a couple of Nandroid backups on my computer though.
Thanks for the info. I might give Titanium Backup a try...

Mybackup works great for backing up contacts and some settings as well as your apps. You get 30 days free trial I think.
if your using Damage's latest, you may want to avoid Titanium as it seems to be breaking the audio....
Check out a program called Android Commander it backs up apps to your computer. I really like the ease of use, plus it makes editing the phone files easy. Check it out!
partition your SD card and get a rom with Apps2SD(A2SD). Than when you flash a new rom the app .apks will still be on your sd card data (unless you cleared ext3 partition in which you should mount your phone via usb and make a copy of the ext3 folder on your sdcard that you have from partitioning ur sd card via RA and have apps2sd running, now to the app that makes all this come together is this simple app i found on the market called "installer" download this one app from market and launch it, what this app does is scan's your sd card for every single .apk file and puts them in a nice neat list(with icons) than you can simple click on it and choose to install. this is a must have!

Have you tried it going from a 1.5 rom (Fresh 1.1 in this case) to a 2.1 ROM (Fresh 2.0d)?
I tried it on my wife's phone last night. After the restore sense was stuck in an FC loop and I had to wipe and start over. I ended up restoring her 1.5 nandroid so she would stop giving me evil looks and contemplating my death.

Nah I've been on 2.1 since the eris leak lol. But were you restoring everything? try doing apps first and see if that works, then one by one doing the data it might be something you can pin point and avoid.

When I did my phone I had no issues...I was like you and was on 2.x from the Eris leak. My wife though doesn't like her phone to be 'tinkered with' (I wonder if that has anything to do with me cursing and screaming when I first bricked my phone with the RUU? But I digress), so she's coming from 1.5 (Fresh 1.1). In any event I tried what you suggest already...the apps install fine. It's when I restore the app settings (only the app settings, not system) that everything goes boom. She's got 120 apps. I'm not going through them one by one, so I'll probably just tell her she's got to live with a nuke and pave if she wants to upgrade. Since she'll likely have the same problem if/when the official Sprint release comes out, I doubt I'll have much trouble convincing her to let go of some of her crap.
My major issue is restoring her text messages at this point. I know that the 1.5 ROMs uses a different database format than the 2.x series. So I'm going to take a guess that I won't be able to save those.

120 apps! Lol, but I might be able to help with the text messages thing, I just found on the market an app called SMS Backup. It actually backs up all your sms to your gmail account in thread form. Its pretty sweet and runs in the background each time you get a message it just uploads it to your gmail account silently. I had the same issue I was just getting sick of everytime I flashed I would loose all my messages at least now I have them backed up somewhere and better yet its in a place where I dont have to worry about running outta space. So overall it might be a better option I read alot of people saying they arent paying attention and a threaded sms reaches 2k+ then their phones start to lag and it wont delete them. Just an option, but its a pretty kick ass app you should check it out.

I'll take a look at it. But if I understand what it does, it will only get new stuff that comes in, and won't be able to be restored to the messaging database, right? If that's the case she won't go for it. She's 'purist' about her phone (she's great, and I love her to death, but a tech geek she isn't. She just wants it to work, work like it's stock, and not give her problems...a viewpoint I can understand, honestly ).

Lol, I understand. I haven't tried restoring to be honest but I think theres another one similar out there called sms backup and restore or something like that that dumps all the sms into an xml file and allows you to restore it again. Not sure I haven't used it, just read about it in passing and looked it up on the market. But thats always another option.

[Q] So I rooted...NOW WHAT?

OK, after the latest OTA I decided to jump in the pool and root my EVO. I did it using UNREVOKED.
I apologize for my rudimentary knowledge, but what do I do now? My goal was to get rid of the pre-installed programs, GENEROUSLY, placed on my phone by HTC and Sprint that I have NO intention of ever using (NASCAR app, NOVA game demo, Blockbuster App...etc. I don't wish to get rid of anything that could even remotely be considered necessary for the phone's function), if for no other reason than to keep my phone more "tidy".
Are there specific programs that will help me with this, or is this something I need to do on my own? I've noticed that I still don't have permission to uninstall things that came pre-installed or were subsequently given to me via OTA updates.
Thanks in advance for any and all input...
ok, i read the title, and i was going to give you a good -facepalm-, but it seems you had a reason for rooting. first, titianium backup is an insane tool that can uninstall ANYTHING and backup apps and their data. that is what you want.
second, root gives you an insane ability to change roms. a rom is the memory inside your phone. now with root and a custom recovery image, you can flash roms made by the insanely talented devs at the xda. may i reccomend myn's warm twopointtwo. you wont believe it is the same phone. like most other roms, myns has a bunch of tweaks already added, as well as almost all bloat apps removed.
if you need any other help, the evo irc is the best place to get it. just download an irc client app (on your computer) and browse it to irc.freenode.net in the room #htc-evo. everyone is helpful over there, including me (or so i like to think).
+1 for Titanium Backup. There is a free version but go ahead and go straight for the paid version, you'll use it often and be glad for the extra features.
Once you have it installed you can click on each app and "freeze" it (disables the app from running), "back it up" (just to be safe), and "remove" it (deletes it from the device).
There are other things you can do now that you are rooted, like install a custom ROM (e.g. specialized build of Android)... but I ended up just sticking with a stock ROM without the stock apps.
I would also recommend booting into recovery mode (power down, then hold the volume down and power buttons until you see the recovery screen) and using Nandroid to perform a full image of your phone. This way if you screw anything up you can just roll back to that image.
Long story short... rooting is whatever you make of it.
P.S. Don't apologize for the questions... I had the same questions you did. While the information exists here in XDA... it's not always easy to find.
both of you would be surprised on how great custom roms are. if i were you, i would try a few at the very least.
btw, the backup feature in titanium backup is for switching roms. it will backup all your apps and their data, and when you restore, add them back in and replace their market links.

I would tend to agree. Once you go to a non-stock rom, stock won't ever be able to do it for you again.
i would suggest you use the "sprint lover" rom to start... get your feet wet.
it is very close to stock... with some tweeks and extras...(like free wifi tethering)
one of the big ones... the bloatware on it are uninstallable like other apps you installed.
under appliction managment.. in the main settings.

Hey folks, does anyone have a resource where I can learn about managing my EVO to increase it's network connection speeds?
I'm rooted w/ RA recovery and stock ROM.
I have not yet flashed a new ROM because I am really trying to get the best speeds out of this phone and I have been searching XDA forums for the information to no avail.
Your insights are always appreciated, thanks for being the best EVO community on the net!

managing data connection not only requires hacking your phone and its radio partition, but it requires faking/hacking the network itself. this is dangerous and illegal. i would recommend ava's z1 rom. it has some nice data tweaks including auto roam and some other things. try myns.

When you say auto roam, does that mean it is running on Verizon's network?
I've read about the hack to force evo to run on Verizon's network but was unsuccessful in trying it.
there is a hack to force evo onto verizon's network but that isnt what i'm talking about. if you are under 2 (i think) bars it will automatically roam to verizon's towers. or something like that.

My office has a strange Sprint deadzone (right where my desk is of course) where I will dip to no bars. Occasionally it will jump over to Verizon (with a full 4 bars) and occasionally it will just sit there dead in the water with no connection.
There doesn't appear to be any pattern to when it roams and when it doesn't.

roaming on verizon...
there is that other shoe that might drop.
Roaming.. and data usage... there is a limit. I hear 250mb, then there might be additional charges.
high percentage of roaming over 90days.. they may cancel your contract and/or charge you for EFT. I hear it is 60% or more is where they start to look at your account.
yea i said it was dangerous. just saying the options. i didnt kno the details however.

dkdude mentioned ava's and myn's ROMs are those good to go with my version? Right now I'm running MikFroYo and I like it but want to try different ROMs too.
New to rooting so I'm a lil nervous on this new investment of mine lol. Thanks for any advice guys.

GB via CM7 is working very well. Camera is functional and I am testing the GPS. See notes below. If you are going to install GAPPS, make sure you remove the setup wizard apk from the zip file.
I am running Launcher7 on mine so that my toddler can easily see her books and games on the launcher screen. Will post screens later.
Changelog:
3.1: CM7 based Touch. Working.
3.0: GB Fail, could not get camera working on any GB rom.
2.0: Fixed GPS, removed mms, added dialer back for secret code access.
1.1: Removed modem lib (broke GPS)
1.0: Removed no signal notification
I take no responsibility... yada yada yada. What you do to your phone is your business, don't blame me.
First off, these ROMs are not my creation they belong to the chefs that cooked them or the devs that built them. All I did was modify them to suit my needs. If you like these ROMs, please buy them a beer and support future development. They have endorsed this project and for that I thank them. The camera apk in the froyo version is GizmoDroid's modded camera as the stock and hacked camera from SGS Tools did not function properly.
The goal of this project was to a Captivate Rom completely devoid of any cell phone functions. Why? Well, my job required me to switch to another OS, but I had grown dependent on my Android apps. As such I have modified these ROMs to give us a "Touch-like" device, devoid of any cell phone functions, and with amazing battery life.
Yes, I know that you can just put the phone in Airplane mode, remove them sim card, disable the data network etc, but phone functions still remain and its a not a complete nor elegant experience.
What works:
Testing, but so far everything but the phone
What doesn't:
Some lock screens display (no service)
Install Instructions:
I have provided links to each ROM's original thread. Please follow the instructions there.
So here you go:

Awesome. I've thought about getting a second Captivate just for this exact purpose. I like the idea of the iTouch but I'm not a big Apple fan. I like being able to expand my storage and replace a failed battery.

Yep, although Cognition uses Voodoo lagfix and I always play it safe by flashing back to stock before installing a new custom rom.
Cool!! Definitely trying this out!
I don't know if you can add it in but on some roms, ie cm7, there is the previous, play/pause, and next for the media controls on the lock screen which would be probably the 2nd best feature of the touch Rom other than the no phone part

Maybe you can try DAGr8's rom, it has 9 lockscreens with media controls, also if i am not wrong, all the 3 roms here have media contols in lockscreen
oh wow. this is a great idea! props!
I'm all for what you are trying to accomplish but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this, what does it matter if you still have the phone (that still has the phones functionality) because of your company unless it was a company phone, but if thats the case then why are you modding it to only work as a smaller tablet. This makes me assume that you were issued a company phone other than your cappy? I also assume 2 other things here, you still need it to work wifi and possibly still need a data signal or is this what you need gone al together. to remove the signal bar at the top look in the theme thread about modding the notification bar, I accidently did this one time, I would have to poke around but I manage I could do it again.
But for whatever reason you want to do this have you tried porting a galaxy tab rom to this by chance, is it even possible, I wouldn't know why it wouldn't be possible.

Yes, I had to purchase a non-android device for work and do not want to pay for multiple lines and data plans. The goal was to continue to use the many apps I purchased, improve battery life, and create a more complete expereince. Simply removing the SIM card leave the cell radio software components intact, giving you the emergency call option notification, the missing sim notification, etc. By removing all of the components associated with the phone (except the lost signal notification - sigh) the experience feels "complete" and intentional, rather than hacked together.
If you can figure out how to remove the notification bar that would be great. I am not a developer, coder etc, just a tinkerer who isn't afraid of bricking his phone. As for the Galazy Tab rom, I would not know where to begin.
The ultimate goal will be to port the ROMs from the Galaxy S WIFI 4 and 5, but in the meantime, I will settle for their native apps missing from the captivate.

Interesting..
I see where you are going with this. Two questions; Does removing all phone functions render wifi useless? Does doing this save significant battery life over airplane mode/no sim?
Thanks!

I have not tested battery life compared to airplane mode, but Standby on the Cognition variant seems to be 5-7 days.
Wifi, BT, and GPS all work perfectly.
For now as a "hack" to get the look your going for you could possibly edit the stat_sys_signal_null.png to a blank image maybe that will work for you, it will most likely be in SystemUI.apk in /system/app if I had time I would do it myself but issues at home will prevent me from playing with this tonight
EDIT: Sorry for some reason I thought you were on a 2.3 rom, Personally I would suggest you try this with DAGr8 symply galaxy, I just removed SystemUI.apk from it reboot and now have no notification bar at all, but everything seems to be functioniong correctly.
With your 2.2 ROM you will most likely find the null signal png in /framework/framework-res.apk in the res/drawable-hdpi may have v4 on there too.

I was going to suggest the same - simply replace the signal bar images with blank/100% transparent images.
After playing around with it today thats gonna be your best option. Yoi really dont want to remove your bar altogether this hinders your ability to mount to pc or to use debugger

If u plan on buying an entirely new phone why not just buy a galaxy player if it's out. Its essentially an itouch

I love this idea. A well developed platform used as a simple media device. It'll blow the doors off anything available designed for that purpose!
Insert GB for bonus points.
I think this would work so much better with ginger and ginger would work so much better as this

I guess he can unlock the second captivate, use it as pmp. And use it as phone when travelling abroad by going back to the favorite rom. Well, this cannot be achieved on itouch or on Samsung Galaxy pmp.

noob has general questions and MIUI

hi yall,
i bought the phone used, and its running 2.2.1 froyo, ever since i got the phone last night ive been here reading everything about it, since im new to android, its very confusing for me.
(1) i wasnt sure if it was rooted, but there was a superuser icon in the menu ,so i went root it again and did allow non market app from super1click. when it was doing allow non market app, the phone frozed , i had to just take off the battery for it to restart, then did the allow non market app again, it was fine the second time. after this i found that the phone is very slow for 20-30 sec when just turned on. perhaps it has nothing to do with rooting and allow non market app, the phone is just like that. anyways is this normal? would rooting 2 times make it slow after power on?
(2) im very interested in installing the MiUI or CM7 to my bravo, i have the factory usb driver installed, and the phone is rooted . what are the other steps to get it work?
i would really appreciate if you have any input,
thanks in advance.
Ok. Get you started then you will need to get what is called the LIFESAVER to me. The Stock .sbf file for just in case times. Next before anything else you need a program called RSD LITE. It's made by Motorola (correct if wrong). On your phone you'll need an app called SndInitDefy_1.4_2.apk. Put it on you mem card and install it on your phone (you did push the allow non market apps button in S1C right?). Then look around for the rom you want to use. Myself and several other people are working on a CM7 rom for the Bravo with a working STOCK camera. The easy fixes are using another 2 or 3 camera apps. After all said and done follow the instructions on sndInitDefy_1.4_2.apk or 2ndInitDefy_1.4_2.apk whatever the name is in the app drawer. After that put the rom you want on your sd card. Not in a folder or anything just the card. Reboot into 2nd recovery and wipe your data, cash and dalvik, then install the new rom. NOTE: Most issues occur because you didn't wipe. NOTE 2: You have to use the Vol. UP and DOWN on the side of the phone to select things and the power on the top to do it while in 2ndInit.
And if you would like to know I was writing this on 2 hours of sleep like 24 hours ago while drinking cold coffee and eating something I can't figure out what it is but reminds me of tacos and nachos. Back of fridge find.
Forgot about your first question, sorry, I haven't really noticed any speed changes before or after root to me. Could be another app you have that runs at boot? If you have any troubles just PM me and I'll get to ya. My major project went to the back burner for the moment. I do have an app for you if you want to try to get a little more speed out of it. Like I said just PM me.
what are the apps that increases speed? is there any way i can delete the junk apps came with the phone? there are 50 of them more than 40 is useless. lol
thanks a lot for taking your time responding my post, i do really appreciate it.
after i run launcher pro, the phone have a speed increase, faster then before. everything is normal now.
i noticed that there are a lot of versions of RST lite, i gusse i should have the latest one. right?
i kinda need the camera for school projects, plus there are still things i need to learn about so i will be doing later, i think pretty soon you guys would know how to make the stock camera work, lol
I use RSD Lite 5.0. Google it and it's easy to find. Camera issue has work around and to rid yourself of the bloatware you need to be rooted (which you are) and look on the market for an app called SuperManager. It may have alot more than what you need but it's free. When you install it open and go to it's settings and mark the box for root. Then you can use it to uninstall your bloatware. I would keep google maps and the navigation app though. I've never had a use for any of the news, weather or news & weather stuff. Just slows your phone and uses your data. If you want a true FM Radio for your phone see below. It's a little better then the AT&T Radio. DO NOT UNINSTALL ANYTHING THAT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE AN APP! You will see things that seem like doubles of stuff. FM Radio is one of these. One is AT&T's app the other is like the driver for ANY FM Radio app to work. Just let me know if you get stuck. Also here is a great overclock app. Don't go over 1 ghz for too long though. Stock is 800Mhz. It's not made by myself.
when i tried to scan the barcode and download overclock and FM files, it keeps giving me a message of
Download unsuccessful
Cannot download. The content is not supported on this phone
i downloaded the files to my computer, everytime i try to put them in the phone by usb cable it shows cant copy, i must did something wrong.
oh, BTW the supermanager is awesome
The old school ways still work for things like this. Take out your memory card and just copy files to it with a card reader. You might have filled up the card already? I can't put anything else on my wifes card but she just has a 2gig. She has alot of music and the videos are taking up alot of room. She's still stock but she does use overclock and undervolt to get a little more speed and save the battery. The QR codes I don't think they work for everyone. Search the market for an app named "Sideload Enabler for Bravo". It's free and so you can make sure you can sideload apps. Gives you the checkbox under settings too! + in my book. Can't remember if it requires root or not..... I'll post the link in a min.

Yea! I just learned Script! (If the link works) It does!

Question on Titanium Backup.

Hey guys, have a quick question here, i have recently started using titanium backup.. and i tutored from a couple of youtube videos which helped a lot. Have a couple of questions about how you use it.
1. What i want to know is, is does encryption feature slow the process of the backup? Although most of the people schedule the backup at night, but i dont want the phone to be running for extended hours thus heating up the device etc.. if encryption does slow the process down.
2. Do you backup on a daily basis, or just weekly?
3. Does the backup happen in the background, and you can continue using other features of the phone while backup is running. Asking this, cos what if the titanium backup is running late at night and a phone call comes in or a message that i have to retrive? Or if et all.. I plan to surf or something late at night.
4. Whats an ideal "Max Backup History", currently i have set it to default one.
5. Do you keep compression or have disabled it, cos i know for sure this one surely slows down the backup process.. but surely it will compress the backup to retain space on the dropbox/sdcard... what do you choose ideally?
6. Dropbox better or Google drive?
I guess thats it for now.
I'd really appreciate your responses.
2. Only when I need to.
3. Yes, just click on the home button and you will see in the status bar that it is working.
4. Just use what you need. If you have use for more than one backup, then use more.
6. Both are good. But on my laptop I have an extension for Chrome which gives me the option to save a picture to Drive after right clicking it.

Thanks for your replies..
Now a few more remaining.. still looking for replies.
1. Encryption requires extra processing power. I don't think it's a lot and if you are storing your backup in the cloud it is probably worth it so the good people at the NSA aren't reading through your personal life on their lunch break. Or if someone gets into your account.
2. I only back up when I have everything set up how I want it and before I switch ROMs (not yet on this phone obviously lol).
3. For the most part, the backup can happen in the background. However, once in a while I have noticed it crash or freeze when I'm doing other stuff, but rarely.
4. I keep my max backup history at 2 because once and a while an app will release a crappy or broken update and I want the old version back.
5. If you have a lot of free space to spare, skip the compression.
6. I've been using Dropbox forever and need to give Google Drive a try.
I back up daily. But this comes from being a serial rom flasher and wanting the most up to date saved always. I do new app updates mon, wed and Fri. Do new data backups Sundays and Thursdays.
I only upload to the cloud rarely. Use a 64GB SD card instead. Holds fine.

The scheduling is kind of up to yourself and whatever suits you. But I'd recommend to schedule at night so it makes backups while you might be charging your phone and not using it. Also weekends are good.
And the same goes for the rest. It's about what suits you the best.
And about encryption and compression, you might want to check TB Wiki (I believe they have) or their forums if they have.
Yeah scheduling is based on your usage and style. I'm a 3rd shifter. I run mine at 5pm. I'm almost always asleep then except on weekends.
I back up frequently because I'm used to flashing custom roms all the time. So having current back ups is nice. Since we won't be getting roms anytime soon cause they have to boot strap us first, I'm cutting back to like 2x a week. Just enough to cover myself in the event my phone bricks or whatever.
How many backups to keep us up to you and how much space you want to use. I do two. So in the event an update sucks I can revert.
