[Q] Possible to downgrade and root HBOOT 89? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've seen it asked and unanswered in random threads but I've never see a thread dedicated to the subject...
Is there anyone out there that has successfully downgraded and rooted their myTouch 4G with the 89 bootloader? If so, please break down the process for me because I have tried every possible method out there and gotten nowhere.

89 bootloader is gingerbread I think which has no way to be rooted yet is your phone gingerbread (android 2.3.4) If so u have to follow one of the downgrade guides back to froyo and a 85 bootloader then go about rooting your device with anyway u want
MyTouch HD (Black) - Virtuous Unity 2.39/Demonspeed v7/Beats/Bad Screen (DAMMIT)/Good Emmc

ah, i guess it's possible i'm asking the wrong question then. i assumed the bootloader number went unchanged after the upgrade to gingerbread and i'd always had 89. thank you for clearing that up. who knows what my problem is then, none of the exploits for downgrading have worked for me.

Theres a downgrade guide in the g2 forums for g2, mt4g, dhd & others. I used it last week to downgrade & it was a piece of cake. Did u give that a try? If not, check it out, it'll def work

[Q] Unlclear as to which rooting method

I am about ready to take the plunge and PermaRoot my MT4G. I do not believe I would be flashing every single type of rom out there - my intention is to install CM7 (one of the unofficial nightlies - i.e. grids 55 - or a variant of CM7). I have read both guides and threads to get PermaRoot and I am still unclear as to which of the two procedures that I need to do (the ULTIMATE guide seems like it has the potential to really brick the phone permanently - maybe I read that wrong?):
"Guide to permaroot, s=off AND s=on!!!!!"
-- or --
"TRUE PermaRoot and the ULTIMATE S=Off!!! Check this out even if you're rooted!!!"
perm rooting
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
would follow these steps plus the engineering hboot, thats what I ended up doing and have no problems flashing roms.
I rooted via theunlockr.com. I have s =off too. No problems flashing roms. Great how to videos also.

i've done it both ways, and they both worked...the ultimate is of coz the best, as it gives u the eng hboot, and also unlocks the phone so you can use it with other sim card..it's a little deep, if you dont know what to do..but once you figure it out, it really is pretty routine..
Thank you all. Rooted and happily running cm7 9.

Rooted and installed mod7 on my 2.2.1 wildfire

Hi, this is my first post. I bought a wildfire as my friend had one with mod7 on it, which looked smart. Didnt realise until after I bought one that the wildfires running android 2.2 seem impossible to root! After reading lots of bullsh*t threads I thought it was impossible. Until i finally managed to root mine and install mod7!
You have to get s-off to start with, which i did at my local market man, who used his XTC clip. I believe, like it or not, this is the only way at the moment to s-off a wildfire running 2.2.1. Once this is done i followed this guide which downgrades to 2.1 then roots the wildfire using an old version of unrevoked, then upgrades to 2.3 rom. Hope this helps someone else....
-- you'll have to google as im not allowed to post links...
google "security xploded wildfire jailbreak"
and the top link there should be the security xploded website with the guide i followed.
Sam
Sorry, but, using an XTC Clip on the 2.2.1 Wildfire to get S-OFF and then Root is a process which was known a very long way back. The sticky thread here shows it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=939801
What people want is a free software based solution, much like Unrevoked for Android 2.1, which is yet impossible.
Ah well, this is the only technique which i could ever get to actually work!

Lost phone..new one came with stock 2.3.4

So I lost my phone..the new one came in last night. And it came with 2.3.4.. I tried to down grade it..followed all the instructions from the forum and everything worked fine..until the bootloader part. It said that it couldn't find the
PD15img.zip file when I put it in the root of the sd card. And then I followed the FAT32 method to make the phone read my sdcard..but that still Didn't work..now what?? Used the search bar but could find anything..

Look in the vision g2 section I was in the same boat as you there is a tut in those forums for downgrading to 2.2.1 with adb it also works for mt4g wish I still had link but its there
Same here... Lost my phone and received the replacement yesterday (off course version 2.3.4). Turned out it is a refurbished, the speaker not working, the earpiece not working. I missed another release of lovely Miui
I just happened to see this post and am curious what the problem is... Why are you downgrading it???
I have a Mytouch 4g (HTC Glacier) which was having issues and I just got the replacement. I have not even turn it on, but I have not doubt it will be 2.3.3-- their latest OTA udpate.
Is there going to be any problem rooting this?? Again, it alarmed me that people were trying to downgrade..
Has the firmware/bootloader changed???

There is no method to root 2.3.4 yet. That's why people have to downgrade.
Do you mean like downgrade from 2.3.4 to 2.2.1 root it, and then upgrade to 2.3.4?
But the only way to do that is if we had the stock 2.3.4 rom, which we don't have, correct?
So I can skip the root and wait, or I can downgrade and be able to use 50% of the apps which I would otherwise be unable to use as they require root.
This sucks.... I am sure someone is working hard on this... but I am surprised there has not been any method (even one that was risky -- as in one typo and you've bricked it) figured out by someone...
Ummm.. Next question then, Can anyone tell me any obvious benefits of the TMO 2.3.4 stock? Is it fast, or mediocre? Or is it just worthless due to the fact that you cannot root it?

Didn't quite understand what you mean but yes, if you got the phone pre-installed with TMO's 2.3.4 then there's no way to root that. You would have to downgrade back to Froyo then root it.
There really are no benefits to TMO's stock 2.3.4 since CM7 2.3.5, VU's 2.3.4 and MIUI's 2.3.5 GB are all better and faster. And even if you liked TMO's GB version for some reason there are rooted and deodexed versions to flash in the dev section. So there really is no downside to rooting.
And as previously stated, the only way to downgrade would be to use that thread in the G2 section which requires ADB.
If you have any questions I just finished downgrading my replacement phone and and rooting via gfree last night.
And before last night I've never even used ADB before.
Found 2 threads that helped me do just that.
Got it all downgraded then followed a video to root gfree. (mackster248)
(Never rooted that way before either.)
Anyway PM if you need help. Maybe I can help you out.

I came over from Sprint Sunday. I bought a new MT4G, and it had 2.3.4 on it. I had a bad feeling there wasnt gonna be a root method for it. I jumped on my PC and did a few google searches. I came up with this method to downgrade:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
It went perfect. I also looked at a few of the root methods. I found this one to be easiest for me:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/TMobile_myTouch_4G:_Full_Update_Guide
I only post this becuase I havent seen any links posted and I imagine alot more people are gonna end up with the GB MT4G's out of the box. Total time to downgrade and root was less than 30 minutes.
same thing happened to me, I tried the adb process but it's hard. so I gave up.. Good luck to you

But this method cannot be used if you have 2.3.4 stock, correct? I looked at it quickly.... it doesn't seem to mention downgrading (unless I overlooked it), so it would require downgrade to Froyo first, correct?

Yes you would half to downgrade to 2.2.1 to root there is no way to root 2.3.4 right now
Yea, unlike most of the other HTC. Phones that got a 2.3.4 update, revolution doesn't support unlocking the mytouch 4g without a downgrade. On the first page of this thread I posted a link to downgrade and the easiest way I found to root. Someone also posted links on this page. I found a few other root methods but they required you to install apps to gain temp root access or download files on the phones browser. The link I found actually only requires you to dl and unzip a few files to your PC and run maybe 10 or 12 commands in a terminal. Very easy.

[Q] Upgrading back to Stock 2.3.4 while keeping S-Off and Rooted

Ok over the past 2 days I have searched over almost every single thread on the MY Touch 4g forums and can not seem to find a definite answer on this question:
Is there any way to take a rooted S-OFF, the Engineering HBoot & the ClockworkMod Recovery, 2.2.1 Stock build using the instructions on cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Glacier:_Full_Update_Guide and upgrade it back to the Stock t-mobile 2.3.4 build without unrooting etc?
I am not overly interested in installing cm7, although I did have a great experience with it on my t-mobile HD2 before the screen decided to stop working for the 2nd time. I actually did enjoy using the stock 2.3.4 build on the mt4g but would like to have more power over my phone (such as changing the hosts files to get rid of ads, remove bloatware apps I'm not interested in myself, etc).
All threads I have read more or less say once you downgrade, root and install clockwork recovery to install a rom of your choice, well I would like that rom to be the stock 2.3.4 build. Other threads state that in order to install the 2.3.4 build you need to install using the bootloader(which would unroot your phone) and not clockwork recovery.
If someone could please point me in the right direction to accomplish this goal you will seriously make my day/night/week/month.
If something is in the works that's great, I'm willing to wait it out. If this is a completely impossible goal so be it, I'll use CM7 mod.

HTCDev HBOOT downgrade

Hi.
So i finally got sick of the annoying bloatware on my wildfire and decided to root. (my phone was NAND locked on HBOOT due to a vendor upgrade to 2.2.1 so i left it for a while until a soft option became available)
I went with htcdev's stft downgrade which upgraded my software to 2.33.771.1. I then tried again using the appropriate RUU only to be told that it is not available for downgrade via htcdevs atm.
My question is that is there anything i can do about this atm?
As far as i am aware (and i may be wrong) but it's possible to resolve this using a goldcard and unrevoked3 (something that i can't do atm but can soon)
Are there any other soft options available to me? Apologies if this has been asked before, i searched and didn't see anything in relation to this query.
Any help in relation to this issue would be much appreciated.
The next thread in this forum has all the answers you need. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1365159
Htc dev unlock doesn't fully unlock the phone, so i recommend you to use revolutionary as it gives s-off and basically unlocks everything except the simlock. You may first need to downgrade hboot but everything you need is explained in the link above. Any problems ask in that thread.
