Advanced Task Killer -> Task manager, must have.
Any Cut -> Add any shortcut/action to homescreen
Launcher Pro -> Advanced homescreen options and smoother interface (a few of the Andriod build the devs are putting together already have this cooked in)
Sense Analog Clock Widget -> HTC Sense style homescreen clock (if you're not running sense already, obviously)
XDA-Developers -> Complete forum app, must have!!!
Lots more great ones depending on your needs/interests, these are some apps that pretty much everyone should have, IMO.

ColorNotes - A colour coded notepad app. Can place individual notes on the home screen.
3 (pronounced "cubed") - nice player, can scroll through music or jump by letter. So far I seem to like it better than the other ones out there.
HistoryEraser - Erases Android Marketplace search history among other things. Great if you don't have a rooted rom or don't feel like mucking about with a file mananger/adb.
Taskpanel - task killer with ignore lists and auto kills when low on memory also has a widget. Not sure how it compares to advanced task killer. I think ATK is more automated/simpler so probably the one to go with.
MailDroid - Email app for hotmail, gmail, yahoo, etc. Couldn't get hotmail added to the default mail app.
Tricorder- Hand-held thing from Star Trek. Displays compass/GPS, microphone sound input, 3g/wifi connectivity data.
Frozen Bubble - fun puzzle-ish game from linux.
I'll second Launcher Pro, although I don't think I've ever been able to install it onto a rom that didn't have it built in (using the eclair desire v5 rom). Theres also Linda file manager (installed by default), not sure how it compares to the ASTRO? one.
EDIT: For a file explorer try Open Mananger instead of Linda. Its open source and free, available from the marketplace. It's pretty good.
Dropbox - for storage off your phones memory and can be used on your pc.
XDA Forums App - A Must have.
Setcpu - CPU overclocking or downclocking(saves some battery)

Just Downloaded this free game called Replica Island. I have to say, i'm very impressed. It's like a pseudo-action/RPG type game. You control a little android around.

SetCPU (saves tons of battery by underclocking the processor when screen is off (create profile))
juiceplotter (shows you a graph of everything your battery does)
Mabilo Wallpaper (amazing, it changes your wallpaper every X minutes and it lets you go through 10000s of wallpapers and download them straight from the app)
eBuddy (best messenger for msn facebook chat and everythign in one)
Action Potato (quality game. )
SMSPopUp (when you recieve a text it pops up ontop of what youre doing for you to delete or answer it quickly, a-la iphone)
Mario Block (a widget that does nothign but spit mushrooms coins and fireflowers.)

So does 10.1 run on the browser now? I hit the search and nothing popped up. I would think that would be the main app everyone wanted. Adobe flash 10.1.

I have been using htc hd2 for nearly 6 months now and have installed:
cookies home tab editor 1.85
few apps like g alarm, sky browser, torch and a carrera watch
Trouble is my fone keeps crashing and its annoying the hell out me
Can you guys work with me to figure out why? Like can I post something on here that will enable you to figure out why it is happens?
It just keeps freezing and I have to take the battery out and put it back to get rid of the problem, its so annoying...
So any help and advise would be appreciated

I'm assuming you're using stock rom?
I have the same problem with CHT 1.85,; i use the new Energy Rom and the built-in version. Try to use the standard lockscreen, this was for me a help to get less crashes. I think it depends to CHT and some manila versions.
If you want to flash a new rom, here are many threads that will help you.

Did make backups of most of it with titanium backup though.
Don't delete sony ericson home , it's the standard launcher fixed this by holding the search button, voice searche for android market, entered the android market from the browser and instaleld launcherpro. anyone got a backup of the standard SE launcher for me?
Got 110MB ram used after start-up now. Seems nice to me (used to be around 170-180 if I recall correctly).
PS I advice against removing office suite as it is used for viewing documents (like word documents, pdf files and those things), unless you got some replacement offcourse.

which version of titanium did you use the free version or the pro and is it easy to get to the apps to be uninstalled.
I used the free version of titanium. It's quite easy. You got a list of all apps that are installed, they are color coded (red=standard phone files, green=standard files with cache you can clear and white is user installed files). Just tab the app and select uninstall. Selecting back-up will only back-up data like preferences and saves I think.
Wornining, don't freeze or un-install SE Home, because it is your home screen and your phone will never unlock the screen. I had to go to titaniam backup and defrost it.
ok just a few questions before I jump in, what does the freezing option actually do?. And also if I was to backup an application first then unistall it, can I then restore it.?

I'm not sure but I think it's like a uninstall that you can put back. You freeze it, rest of the system think it's gone, you unfreeze, and it's back as it was before. Could be used as a test before uninstalling.

I think more ram but not more storage space, uninstalling should safe storage space.

My device survived around 60 hours, including 1.5 hours of gaming (super mario kart to be ecaxt), the occasional whatsapp/skype/texting, around 20MB of downloads and some surfing + playing music on my earplugs for a few hours. Still got 15% left (dimmed the screen brightnes when I was around 50%). Deleting bloatware really seems to help.

iPlayer, magicsmoke, protips, stk, touchpal, thesims3, facebook, twitter, geniewidget, talk, music, timescape, support, digitalclock, owstore, retaildemo, setupwizard, touchnote, vodafoneshop, vodafoneupdates, whatsapp.
From the earlier list, I don't recommend anyone remove the Get Games unless they are sure they don't want any from the "more games" when you slide open your phone. I had thought I could still get the full list of games via market, but games like Backstab aren't. You can't get these games via emulators either.
My phone has went from booting in around 5 minutes to less than 1 minute & I had initially freed RAM up to the point where I was >200Mb.
The phone flies now, you can really see the difference. I'm also keeping widgets to a minimum & I highly recommend no-one puts on the useless task managers to kill processes (which themselves drain the battery). Simply use Running Services within settings. Oh, and I now only have 13 running services
My battery life I haven't noticed yet because the phone is stuck to my hand

Lol, I hear ya. I'm only starting out with Android so the curve is still upward. From what I read from other sources, task killers are only useful if you have them set to automatically kill because the offending services continually restart. Then it's a looping killing field, as you say chicken & egg time. The way forward is to root & remove the apps
I'm trying to be good by using the inbuilt OS to find out status rather than add more hoggers such as battery widgets, task killers etc. Gotta stretch that battery to it's max.
I still haven't had time to play many games yet!!

Ye the task killer no//yes issue has been argued over and over. I played modern combat and was stuck on it at my son's football practice i was so engrossed its out of this world lol. Gone give backstab a short today.

Hi guys,
I flashed the Gingerbread stock ROM, courtesy of Chainfire (see thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1073854) and noticed there are no threads about apps that are safe to freeze/remove from the system to improve performance and (maybe) battery life as well.
Therefore, here is my compiled list, along with some info on what the apps do. Please note that this list of safe to freeze apps apply to the Galaxy Tab running the stock 2.3.3 ROM only. The list of apps is different than the one on the 2.2 ROM, although some are the same.
Note: I use TitaniumBackup to freeze apps. These apps are safe to freeze no matter what app you use to freeze them.
Note2: Safe to freeze (in the following list) means your Galaxy Tab will work fine without it and other apps won't crash / not work if you freeze something. The apps you freeze will no longer work until you defrost them, though. Where dependencies exit, I will note them.
So, here goes the list (alphabetical). First, the "no dependency apps":
AccuWeather Clock => widget
AllShare => DNLA client/server
[BOOKMARKS] Browser 2.3.3 => Chrome Browser. Freeze if you use another
Calculator => simple calculator
Calendar Clock => widget
Daily Briefing => widget
Date, time and weather => widget
Date time or weather => widget
Digital Frame => nightstand app. Freeze dependencies as well if you don't use it
Dual Clock => widget
Google search => widget,app. Freeze of not used
Home screen tips => widget

Music Hub => Samsung app
Music Visualization Wallpapers => live wallpaper

Readers Hub => paper, magazine and book reading app. Freeze dependencies as well if not used.
Samsung keypad => Freeze if you use only Swype
Sketch Memo => simple drawing app
Social Hub => Samsung app (frontend for email accounts). Accounts work normally without it.
Talk => Google talk application
ThinkFree Office => office suite. Freeze if you use another or don't use it.
Voice Search => Google voice search
World clock => simple world clock management app
Y! Finance Clock => widget
Youtube => youtube app
Now the list of apps that others depend on. Only freeze these apps if you plan on freezing the parent app as well or don't use it:
eBook => ebook reading app. Readers Hub depends on it.
Kobo => ebook reading app. Readers Hub depends on it.
Music => standard music player. Digital Frame depends on it. Freeze if you use another music player.
My Files => email app depends on it. You can't attach files without it.
PressReader => newspaper reading app. Readers Hub depends on it.
Program Monitor => widget. Samsung Home depends on it
Samsung Apps => samsung market. Supposedly updates samsung apps. Freeze if you don't use samsung home or apps installed via Samsung Apps.
Samsung Home => Freeze ONLY if you have another home replacement app (another launcher / home).
TTS Service => Pico TTS depends on it
TwWallpaperChooser => samsung wallpapers
Video => Video player. Freeze if you use another video player
Zino Reader => magazine reader. Readers Hub depends on it
Blocking all of these WILL NOT give you more space on your device drives. It will, in some cases increase the amount of RAM available. Currently, I have not blocked all of the above as some of them I actually use (like youtube, lol).
I have 242 MB free RAM after a clean boot-up. Also note that a clean boot for me includes ADW, Pure Messaging scroll widget, Beautiful Widgets, 3G Watchdog, SwypePad, WidgetLocker and Multitasking Pro all started at the same time. All of them are memory hogs, so your restuls may be better than mine after you freeze all unneeded apps.
Only a couple of the apps in the lists above actually use up RAM. Best things to freeze (if not used), should be:
Pico TTS & TTS Service
Everything related to Samsung Home (wallpapers, widgets etc.)
Y! Finance Clock (for some reason it runs in the background even if not used)
Readers Hub (for some reason it runs in the background even if not used)
Music Hub (for some reason it runs in the background even if not used)
Pulse (updates news in background as service)
News&Weather (runs a service in background)
AllShare (runs a service in background)

You can set the Pulse to not run any updates in the background. I froze almost all. A reboot gives me 276 free ram with widgetsoid, player pro widget, twicca, adw launcher ex and thumb keyboards running.
Gmail can also be frozen if you use a different email app. Same goes for the default email app.

My Pulse still runs some service in the background after disabling automatic news updates. I don't have a problem with data usage; RAM is golden for me on the other hand.
Regarding the messaging app "[SMS/MMS PREFS]Messaging 2.2", don't disable it!!!
On top of managing your messages and showing you a list of them, it also manages the SMS center information and distribution of messages. So, even if you don't need the front-end you will still need the back-end.

I just did. goSMS still works. It's so much better now. Before, when I receive an SMS, I get TWO notifications, one for each SMS app. Even if I open the msg from goSMS, the notification for stock SMS is still there. Now it's fixed.
I will do more observation, including MMS. Thanks anyway!

However, in theory you COULD still encounter issues at least when changing SMS/MMS setup such as message expiration time, sms center number etc. On the other hand, how often would you actually do that?
Probably never, but you should write an update in case you notice anything funny :-D

That's pretty weird. Have you updated to the latest version of pulse? I updated it at once. After closing it, it doesn't show in my "running" apps, nor can I force close it (since it has already been closed).
You can also freeze Maps and Street View, btw.

@pendevous: after a reboot, the service was not started anymore (defrosted it, disabled updates). Guess something wasn't stopped correctly or got hung up.

Why install pulse and then freeze it? Why dont you just not install it in first place if you dont want to use it.

Updating to gingerbread will you give you the old version of Pulse included. I think that the op thinks it's part of the system.

Even if it was you can use a program like SystemApp Remover to uninstall it. Much better then freezing.
Kinda... The 2.3.3 ROM comes with Pulse by default. Although I kinda like Pulse, I've moved to Taptu for the time being. Similar interface, but smaller footprint.
Update: I know it's not system app, lolz. Point is, if you remove it outright, will you be able to update later? It is part of the ROM and by all standards considered bloatware. Should be frozen unless used. I highly NOT recommend removal.
PS: why not remove Samsung Home as well if not used?

Titanium can also uninstall system apps . Freezing is a way to "hide" an app and reduce mem usage without really uninstalling it. It's like putting the app in cold storage!
Yes Titanium can also unfreeze just in case an issue comes up that you will need the freezed app....

I removed all the bloatwear from system/apps using root explorer all working great no force closes now i have it the way it should be.

Bit of an Andriod noob here, but learning fast. I have installed gingerxperia v23 on my phone (stock kernel) and I am using link2sd to manage my storage problems. I have noticed though that a lot of "pre-installed" apps in the mod are hogging RAM and I want to freeze / un-install them to help keep things streamlined and smooth.
The problem is that I am not totally sure if they are safe to do so or if I will just experience a whole of lot of random issues!!
Here is a list of the possible targets below and some notes on each,
+Downloads (UI) - not sure what it manages as I would of thought the browser / market would handle these?
+DSPManager - not sure if freezing this would kill sound, you can not kill the process
+Email - I use the GMail app
+File Manager - I use Astro / Root Explorer
+Liveware Manager - useless??
+Music - I use Mixzing
+Notes - I use Catch
+Timescape - No need for it
+Xperia Events - No need for it
Some system stuff
+Calendar.apk, Widgetcalendar.apk & CalendarProvider.apk - I use Jorte Calendar, Gtasks & Simple Calendar Widget
+EventStream.apk - Experia events related ???
+Infiniteview.apk
+Livewallpaperspicker.apk - I don't use live wallpapers
If I need to provide any more details just ask, any advice is greatly appreciated

Thanks for your advice. I have now frozen all the apps listed with the exception of downloads, calendar and infiniteview.
DSPManager would not freeze and I had to force quit link2sd, I am guessing this relates to the fact that the process cannot be killed. It must be important

No its not, actually you can delete manual just use root explorer go system-app and delete it from there, after that just restart you phone
