[Q] Are these apps safe to freeze in GingerXperia (v23 - stock kernel) - XPERIA X8 General

Hi Everyone,
Bit of an Andriod noob here, but learning fast. I have installed gingerxperia v23 on my phone (stock kernel) and I am using link2sd to manage my storage problems. I have noticed though that a lot of "pre-installed" apps in the mod are hogging RAM and I want to freeze / un-install them to help keep things streamlined and smooth.
The problem is that I am not totally sure if they are safe to do so or if I will just experience a whole of lot of random issues!!
Here is a list of the possible targets below and some notes on each,
+Downloads (UI) - not sure what it manages as I would of thought the browser / market would handle these?
+DSPManager - not sure if freezing this would kill sound, you can not kill the process
+Email - I use the GMail app
+File Manager - I use Astro / Root Explorer
+Liveware Manager - useless??
+Music - I use Mixzing
+Notes - I use Catch
+Timescape - No need for it
+Xperia Events - No need for it
Some system stuff
+Calendar.apk, Widgetcalendar.apk & CalendarProvider.apk - I use Jorte Calendar, Gtasks & Simple Calendar Widget
+EventStream.apk - Experia events related ???
+Infiniteview.apk
+Livewallpaperspicker.apk - I don't use live wallpapers
If I need to provide any more details just ask, any advice is greatly appreciated
DJJ

You can freeze all of this except this one coz im not sure about downloads, calendar and infiniteview

Hi dsaklein,
Thanks for your advice. I have now frozen all the apps listed with the exception of downloads, calendar and infiniteview.
DSPManager would not freeze and I had to force quit link2sd, I am guessing this relates to the fact that the process cannot be killed. It must be important

Suggested apps for Oxygen

Hi guys,
I'm busy working on a repo of all the apps you'd recommend to be used on AdamG's Oxygen rom. I've gone through most of the Oxygen rom thread and got some suggestions already, but I need a lot more.
Hopefully this will be included in a future Oxygen rom and will just make it easier for people to find things to improve their experience with Oxygen.
Apps so far are:
System
Cyanogen mms.apk (Fixes issues with mms functionality in Oxygen)
adblock hosts (Fixes the hosts issue some people have with adblock)
Gallery3D (For those of you who prefer the 3D gallery)
ROM Manager Free (Everyone needs this)
Gingerbread Keyboard with dictionary (The current keyboard in Oxygen does not support dictionary)
Backup and Restore
Titanium Backup Free (Helps with backing up apps and removing apps you don't want)
SMS Backup & Restore (Useful for when we have an update to flash)
Call Logs Backup & Restore (Useful for when we have an update to flash)
SMS Backup + (added functionality of syncing sms/calls with gmail)
LifeSaver2 (1 app that backs up both sms and calls. Handles large amount of data)
Share and Explore
Bluetooth File Transfer (Fixes the bluetooth pairing issues on AOSP)
ES File Explorer (Browse directories on your desire)
Widgets (Weather/Clock)
News & Weather Widget (Widget that displays recent news and weather)
Fancy Widget Free (Displays time and weather on homescreen)
GO! Weather Widget (Displays time and weather on homescreen)
gTabSiMiClock
Launchers
ADWLauncher
LauncherPro
GO! Launcher
Gingerbread Launcher by Modaco
Gingerbread Launcher by Eugene (This one has the 3D app drawer)
Please only suggest free apps.
Please post app name and a download link if one is available.
NO +1 POSTS!!! I only need the suggestion once.
On a side note, the proposed names for this project and app are Oxygen Air and Oxygen Breathe. If you have any suggestions on a name please let me, preferably by pm and then we can have a vote to see what it'll be called.
ok, i'll kick off.
free versions of ROM Manager & Titanium.
I agree bout mms.apk and adhost but for every launcher i dont think adam will agree. He said before that will be his one and only default launcher and he'll stick to that.
And i dont really like this idea thing, i prefer tje rom to be as loghtweight as possible without any apps. That way, more freedom and people can install any of their favoured apps.

I'm only doing it because of the amount of people that go into the Oxygen thread and moan about zeam. It might stop them moaning.

The rom will not come with any of these suggested apps. It is just 1 app that will work as a repo, like the Market. The difference is that these are apps that fix or improve certain elements or apps that are suggested by the Oxygen community.
My favorite launcher is Zeam, ADW.Launcher, LauncherPro and Go Launcher
Because of Oxygen, I used Zeam but now thinking of changing to Go Launcher since it has so may improvements. Only thing missing is scrollable widgets.

Hi, nice initiative.
I would suggest:
- Since we are upgrading ROMs and sometime full wiping, something to backup/restore SMS, MMS and call logs (like SMS Backup & Restore and Call Logs Backup & Restore) would be really useful.
- less important because it only affects a few Oxygen users: Bluetooth File Transfer. Since pairing with some carkits does not work for AOSP based roms, it is the only way I've found to successfully pair my phone with my carkit.

I thought to suggest this too but wasnt sure if titanium is able to do that (I dont use it.. prefer to reinstall apps).
For sms/call logs, I use sms backup + which is free and best of all, it syncs sms/calls with gmail
I like LifeSaver2 for Call log/Messages backup, it backs up to your SD card and handles large volumes quite well (I exported and imported 3300+ SMS messages without a hitch).
I also like the News & Weather widget, which wasn't in Oxygen 1.0.4.
- fancy widget (free)
- Es file Explorer
i can see this is going to grow into a big list!
@BendingBetty - perhaps you should make this into a poll so we can vote and then you can package up, say the most popular 10 or so....
just an idea...

Right now I'm just wanting to build the repo. So the more the better. I'll stop between 50 and 100. Hoping to then get a suggest an app button in the app to make it easier to manage.
Clock & Weather :
gTabSiMiClock
The modified dialer by Cytown or Wysie. The blacklist number feature is deeply missed.
led light or something like this to use the flash as torch.
the one used on Defros rom is simple and works even when screen timeout. (I do not remember the name of this app)
Advanced Task Killer (free variant)
Everybody needs somethink, to kill your ghosts
Ad in the app is ok, i use it as service anyway

You can use Status menu power bar mod for do this, simple add Toggle LED flashlight.
Settings -> Display -> Widget buttons
If you use 2.0, you should wait, the mod will be avaible soon, becouse AdamG is awesome

Hi guys!
Some days before I flashed oxygen 1.0.4 rom on my desire and i just recognised that i havent got sms menupoint. So i cant write ( i dont know if i can receive sms ) messages. If i try i get this: android.process.acore stopped unexpectedly.
Somebody could help me please?
Thanks!
That's the thing I like about Oxygen.
There's basically nothing included.
Then again; I don't think apps such as "SiMiClock" will be included in a ROM. I see the need for ROM Manager to take an example, but I don't feel that it needs to be included in the ROM itself.
SetCPU!
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I`m struggling to see the sense here, free apps just put in yourself or are people to lazy. Better to be a minimal rom then each person can customise to suit. FWIW I have over 50% of the apps posted on here.

Rooted (Locked Bootloader) Phone - App Removal (Safe List)

-Anonymous usage stats
--2 digital clock things that where eating up around 20MB ram (and I didn't even use those widgets...)
-facebook
-facebook extensions
-get games 1.5.1
-live wallpaper picker
-magicsmoke
-playstation pocket
-retail demo
-support (got the xda app )
-talk
-twitter (extension)
-voice dialer
-iplayer (that came with root)
-chinese keyboard
-bruce lee
-pws
-setup guide
- Sony Ericsson sync client wizard
-sony ericson home
and some things you listed already
Did make backups of most of it with titanium backup though.
Don't delete sony ericson home , it's the standard launcher fixed this by holding the search button, voice searche for android market, entered the android market from the browser and instaleld launcherpro. anyone got a backup of the standard SE launcher for me?
Got 110MB ram used after start-up now. Seems nice to me (used to be around 170-180 if I recall correctly).
PS I advice against removing office suite as it is used for viewing documents (like word documents, pdf files and those things), unless you got some replacement offcourse.

which version of titanium did you use the free version or the pro and is it easy to get to the apps to be uninstalled.
I used the free version of titanium. It's quite easy. You got a list of all apps that are installed, they are color coded (red=standard phone files, green=standard files with cache you can clear and white is user installed files). Just tab the app and select uninstall. Selecting back-up will only back-up data like preferences and saves I think.
Wornining, don't freeze or un-install SE Home, because it is your home screen and your phone will never unlock the screen. I had to go to titaniam backup and defrost it.
ok just a few questions before I jump in, what does the freezing option actually do?. And also if I was to backup an application first then unistall it, can I then restore it.?

I'm not sure but I think it's like a uninstall that you can put back. You freeze it, rest of the system think it's gone, you unfreeze, and it's back as it was before. Could be used as a test before uninstalling.
OK so by freezing it this actually creates more memory?

I think more ram but not more storage space, uninstalling should safe storage space.
ok froze a couple of apps, but no difference on ram, so do i actually have to unistall the app, after backup, ?so that i can restore it should i want to use it?
if you un-installed any stock apps and you want them back, you propebly can get them here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1036249
My device survived around 60 hours, including 1.5 hours of gaming (super mario kart to be ecaxt), the occasional whatsapp/skype/texting, around 20MB of downloads and some surfing + playing music on my earplugs for a few hours. Still got 15% left (dimmed the screen brightnes when I was around 50%). Deleting bloatware really seems to help.
Hey all,
I have also uninstalled a pile of bloatware, mostly covered by what has been mentioned already. Some of the names I don't remember but I will write what is on my list via Titanium:
iPlayer, magicsmoke, protips, stk, touchpal, thesims3, facebook, twitter, geniewidget, talk, music, timescape, support, digitalclock, owstore, retaildemo, setupwizard, touchnote, vodafoneshop, vodafoneupdates, whatsapp.
From the earlier list, I don't recommend anyone remove the Get Games unless they are sure they don't want any from the "more games" when you slide open your phone. I had thought I could still get the full list of games via market, but games like Backstab aren't. You can't get these games via emulators either.
My phone has went from booting in around 5 minutes to less than 1 minute & I had initially freed RAM up to the point where I was >200Mb.
The phone flies now, you can really see the difference. I'm also keeping widgets to a minimum & I highly recommend no-one puts on the useless task managers to kill processes (which themselves drain the battery). Simply use Running Services within settings. Oh, and I now only have 13 running services
My battery life I haven't noticed yet because the phone is stuck to my hand
Good luck all,
Rixter
Battery life is much better! Charged my phone 5 days ago. Made some calls, played games and it is still 50% charged

Lol, I hear ya. I'm only starting out with Android so the curve is still upward. From what I read from other sources, task killers are only useful if you have them set to automatically kill because the offending services continually restart. Then it's a looping killing field, as you say chicken & egg time. The way forward is to root & remove the apps
I'm trying to be good by using the inbuilt OS to find out status rather than add more hoggers such as battery widgets, task killers etc. Gotta stretch that battery to it's max.
I still haven't had time to play many games yet!!

Apps safe to freeze on Galaxy Tab with Gingerbread 2.3.3 ROM

Hi guys,
I flashed the Gingerbread stock ROM, courtesy of Chainfire (see thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1073854) and noticed there are no threads about apps that are safe to freeze/remove from the system to improve performance and (maybe) battery life as well.
Therefore, here is my compiled list, along with some info on what the apps do. Please note that this list of safe to freeze apps apply to the Galaxy Tab running the stock 2.3.3 ROM only. The list of apps is different than the one on the 2.2 ROM, although some are the same.
Note: I use TitaniumBackup to freeze apps. These apps are safe to freeze no matter what app you use to freeze them.
Note2: Safe to freeze (in the following list) means your Galaxy Tab will work fine without it and other apps won't crash / not work if you freeze something. The apps you freeze will no longer work until you defrost them, though. Where dependencies exit, I will note them.
So, here goes the list (alphabetical). First, the "no dependency apps":
AccuWeather Clock => widget
AllShare => DNLA client/server
[BOOKMARKS] Browser 2.3.3 => Chrome Browser. Freeze if you use another
Calculator => simple calculator
Calendar Clock => widget
Daily Briefing => widget
Date, time and weather => widget
Date time or weather => widget
Digital Frame => nightstand app. Freeze dependencies as well if you don't use it
Dual Clock => widget
Google search => widget, app. Freeze of not used
Home screen tips => widget
Live Wallpaper Picker => Freeze if you don't use live wallpapers
Magic Smoke Wallpapers => live wallpaper
Music Hub => Samsung app
Music Visualization Wallpapers => live wallpaper
News & Weather => widget
Pico TTS => Text to Speech (reads text for you). Freeze if not used
Pulse => news reader. Freeze if you use another
Readers Hub => paper, magazine and book reading app. Freeze dependencies as well if not used.
Samsung keypad => Freeze if you use only Swype
Sketch Memo => simple drawing app
Social Hub => Samsung app (frontend for email accounts). Accounts work normally without it.
Talk => Google talk application
ThinkFree Office => office suite. Freeze if you use another or don't use it.
Voice Search => Google voice search
World clock => simple world clock management app
Y! Finance Clock => widget
Youtube => youtube app
Now the list of apps that others depend on. Only freeze these apps if you plan on freezing the parent app as well or don't use it:
eBook => ebook reading app. Readers Hub depends on it.
Kobo => ebook reading app. Readers Hub depends on it.
Music => standard music player. Digital Frame depends on it. Freeze if you use another music player.
My Files => email app depends on it. You can't attach files without it.
PressReader => newspaper reading app. Readers Hub depends on it.
Program Monitor => widget. Samsung Home depends on it
Samsung Apps => samsung market. Supposedly updates samsung apps. Freeze if you don't use samsung home or apps installed via Samsung Apps.
Samsung Home => Freeze ONLY if you have another home replacement app (another launcher / home).
TTS Service => Pico TTS depends on it
TwWallpaperChooser => samsung wallpapers
Video => Video player. Freeze if you use another video player
Zino Reader => magazine reader. Readers Hub depends on it
Blocking all of these WILL NOT give you more space on your device drives. It will, in some cases increase the amount of RAM available. Currently, I have not blocked all of the above as some of them I actually use (like youtube, lol).
I have 242 MB free RAM after a clean boot-up. Also note that a clean boot for me includes ADW, Pure Messaging scroll widget, Beautiful Widgets, 3G Watchdog, SwypePad, WidgetLocker and Multitasking Pro all started at the same time. All of them are memory hogs, so your restuls may be better than mine after you freeze all unneeded apps.
Only a couple of the apps in the lists above actually use up RAM. Best things to freeze (if not used), should be:
Pico TTS & TTS Service
Everything related to Samsung Home (wallpapers, widgets etc.)
Y! Finance Clock (for some reason it runs in the background even if not used)
Readers Hub (for some reason it runs in the background even if not used)
Music Hub (for some reason it runs in the background even if not used)
Pulse (updates news in background as service)
News&Weather (runs a service in background)
AllShare (runs a service in background)
User reported successful freezes without noticeable impact:
[SMS/MMS PREFS]Messaging 2.2 => messaging app. Thanks to Sef_P1000 for reporting this.
Street View => google maps extension. Thanks to pendevous for reporting this.
Maps => maps application. Freeze if you don't use or have a different GPS app. Thanks to pendevous for reporting this.

You can set the Pulse to not run any updates in the background. I froze almost all. A reboot gives me 276 free ram with widgetsoid, player pro widget, twicca, adw launcher ex and thumb keyboards running.
Gmail can also be frozen if you use a different email app. Same goes for the default email app.

I use GOsms for messaging. is it safe to freeze the stock sms app?
- [SMS/MMS PREFS]Messaging 2.2
Thanks on the way!
My Pulse still runs some service in the background after disabling automatic news updates. I don't have a problem with data usage; RAM is golden for me on the other hand.
Regarding the messaging app "[SMS/MMS PREFS]Messaging 2.2", don't disable it!!!
On top of managing your messages and showing you a list of them, it also manages the SMS center information and distribution of messages. So, even if you don't need the front-end you will still need the back-end.
Hope this helps!

I just did. goSMS still works. It's so much better now. Before, when I receive an SMS, I get TWO notifications, one for each SMS app. Even if I open the msg from goSMS, the notification for stock SMS is still there. Now it's fixed.
I will do more observation, including MMS. Thanks anyway!
I have updated the first post to include your report. Thanks a bunch!
However, in theory you COULD still encounter issues at least when changing SMS/MMS setup such as message expiration time, sms center number etc. On the other hand, how often would you actually do that?
Probably never, but you should write an update in case you notice anything funny :-D

That's pretty weird. Have you updated to the latest version of pulse? I updated it at once. After closing it, it doesn't show in my "running" apps, nor can I force close it (since it has already been closed).
You can also freeze Maps and Street View, btw.
wow, ive been looking for something like this for ages! thanks!
@pendevous: after a reboot, the service was not started anymore (defrosted it, disabled updates). Guess something wasn't stopped correctly or got hung up.
PS: updated main post.
Thx for the tips.
CM.
Why install pulse and then freeze it? Why dont you just not install it in first place if you dont want to use it.
Am I missing something here?

Updating to gingerbread will you give you the old version of Pulse included. I think that the op thinks it's part of the system.

Even if it was you can use a program like SystemApp Remover to uninstall it. Much better then freezing.
Kinda... The 2.3.3 ROM comes with Pulse by default. Although I kinda like Pulse, I've moved to Taptu for the time being. Similar interface, but smaller footprint.
Update: I know it's not system app, lolz. Point is, if you remove it outright, will you be able to update later? It is part of the ROM and by all standards considered bloatware. Should be frozen unless used. I highly NOT recommend removal.
PS: why not remove Samsung Home as well if not used?
Anyway, there you have it )

Titanium can also uninstall system apps . Freezing is a way to "hide" an app and reduce mem usage without really uninstalling it. It's like putting the app in cold storage!
Yes Titanium can also unfreeze just in case an issue comes up that you will need the freezed app....
Good to know thx for this thread
I removed all the bloatwear from system/apps using root explorer all working great no force closes now i have it the way it should be.

Generally speaking, yes, this is normal.
Those apps are put into standby and some apps run automatically like Systemupdater, Acer Sync etc... Other apps, like Photo Browser 3D, nemoPlayer, even Maps etc - will start but not in the sense of 'start' like we would think. They are ready states (as I understand them) and in some cases will stay ready or swap out when resources are getting light and the OS needs more headroom.
"By default, every application runs in its own Linux process. Android starts the process when any of the application's components need to be executed, then shuts down the process when it's no longer needed or when the system must recover memory for other applications."
So even if you don't launch and application manually, it could easy start up on it own if a component of it was executed (on some level).
It is not recommended to force-close applications unless the application is causing problems - in which case, uninstalling it is the better option.

I (though others would say the opposite) do not recommend uninstalling anything that came preloaded with the tablet. Both for stability reasons and future updates - if however you're really REALLY obsessing over getting back a dozen megabytes of allocated memory from those minor apps then you're going to have to go the whole long road down root avenue and backing up those applications etc ad nauseam. You can get all the info you need throughout the forum.
My advice is, don't worry about those native apps running in the background - if the OS needs more resources it will manage them on it's own. It's not like Windows where you can kill running programs or processes willy-nilly from the task manager when you want to free up memory - in Android, the OS does this as it sees fit, on its own. If it wants more juice, it will make more juice available to itself.
I had the same issues.. a quick fix i ran was to root my tablet and install "bloat freezer" from the market.
it simply stops the processes from running, so your not un-installing them just stopping them from running, Im now seeing my free ram running at appx 65% free at any time which is much better than before.
If i do want to use skype or whatever i simply unfreeze them and freeze them again when finished..
hope this helps..
<edit>
just to let you know i have frozen all of the acer bundled apps
Freezing apps is an option. I don't do that so I have no experienced opinion as far as that goes.
i agree with gamma
These apps are not really running. They are connected to context menues.like when younare in camera app and you click the share image menus.you will see the apps that can share the image such at Facebook Picasso dropbox and so on.these are the apps setting in static mode.I know in nor totally correct but its the closes I can do to describe.if your statement needs the memory or CPU cycles these apps might be using it will shut them down..I have tested this theory by launching many apps and logging processes.
task killers running in the background work against the built in memory and resources management's.
Good luck.if im wrong anyone please correct the post.just do so nicely
Don't make the blonde geeky chic cry giggles

That does freeze those apps.but if the system needed that ram it would do the same.it gives foreground ape priority.if that or those apps need the resources.the system will kill the lowest priority apps.
Of course thee are some rogue apps that do not play fair.if you find them then uninstall.I use advanced task killer.but never let it run in background.just can launch it lookat what's running. Then close it it will not restart itself
I understand the memory management. But i would rather applications especially skype to run when i want and not as the system see's fit. Social jogger was another culprit they were my biggest bug bears..

Those apps are not running. The may be started at boot but only partially, then they are "paused" and cached for quicker loading if needed.
Android does an awesome job at memory management and will kill apps when it needs more ram.
I dont like it either since i dont use social jogger, nemo player, acer sync and many more so you have two options
If you are rooted flash a rom without all that crap in it.
Or
Use a file manager with root access and file manipulation like 'rootexplorer' and rename those files so they wont run.
I rename them to socialjogger.apk.bak
Just adding the .bak to the filename is enough.
But dont piss around you can smoke the tablet and have to do a factory reset via recovery if you mess with the wrong file.
Just post a list of thing you wish to remove and we will be happy to let you know whats ok or not.
Oh and btw... the ipad runs a crap ton of stuff in the bckground too, apple jst desnt show you like android does.

[Q] NAND Dev Question: Keeping /system/ low, put apps in /Data/?

This question is to the devs:
Why not try to keep the /system/ partition as low as possible?
As far as I know, any non-essential apps to get your app running can be installed through the /Data/ folder, which can be A2Ext'ed and won't need to eat up our NAND memory.
So why don't devs just push all the apps that can be in /Data/, to /Data?
Apps to consider moving to /Data/:
Theme chooser and livewallpaper
Camera, Gallery
Any kind of games
Browser
Additional misc. apps like dpi changer and Torch
Maps
Calendar, Calculator
Music, FM, Soundrecorder
SuperUser, ROM Manager, SpareParts
GMail, Talk
Apps that should stay in /system/:
Any kind of *services.apk
Any kind of *providers.apk
Any kind of background apps
Setup wizard
Keyboard
Phone, Messaging, Launcher
Bluetooth
Settings
Market
Bumping for some insight!
There's no way that no one has considered this before. I want to know what's wrong with doing this.
