Does the SNID inside the microSD card cover [sticker] match the SNID in ABOUT and the SNID on the box sticker for you?

Mine do

mine does as well and also matches on the box the tablet came in.. Some custom roms mess those numbers up..

confirmed lightspeed rom doesnt even show snid on tablet

My understanding is that ROM's clear out the SN and SNID in ABOUT so if you have a flashed ROM, just check the SNID on the sticker on the microSD cover against the sticker on the box and confirm if it is the same or not. Thanks.

That is confirmed. I remember awhile back there being a thread about some ROMs clearing the SNID and SN, but when you flash back to a Stock based ROM it comes back.
I can also confirm way back when when I still had the fascination with custom ROMs and custom kernels that mine was cleared until I flashed back as well.

And when you flash back, the SN/SNID was brought back to the stock matching version, correct?
So even if one does flash a ROM, thereby clearing both the SN & SNID, they are tied to the hardware so technically impossible to clear out permanently. That's my understanding, anyways.
Not that that particular point matters but just for clarification purposes...

ESNs in phones were "supposedly" tied to the hardware as well (actually firmware), but we all know now that you can overwrite a phone's ESN as well.
In our case, I have yet to hear of anyone overwriting their SNID/SN permenantly.

Just finished reading your "Acer Nightmare" post (took awhile to read it all). Clusterf$%k doesn't even begin to describe it lol
I'll tell you one thing, someone rewrote the SNID on that tab! Only way I can figure that one out, and the only clear choice for the rewrite is Acer.

Yeah but then I'd be giving into the problem and not resolving it. The issue is that they reissued my SNID - regardless of the fact that I have three, it would still be clear to them that the one they sent to Revonate was in the world, somewhere.
There's something else going on here and I can bet Best Buy is going to get to the bottom of it.
And thanks for taking the time to read it - I know its long - if you can pass it on - FB / Twitter, the more people know, the more can check and the more chances there are of finding out if others have the same problem.

I wasn't saying that you should send it back to Acer, was merely saying that they did the initial rewrite of your SNID.
There is virtually no need for our tab to have it's SNID rewritten by an individual, like the need for phones to have their ESN rewritten, when the ESN is dirty.
Just saying that if anyone rewrote it, it was most likely Acer. As to the "why", you're going to have to stick with it, and find out

How can we fix a softbrick? I did not think they would be different and followed a guide on AndroidCentral. Now I am at the Motorola Dual Core Technology screen and it is going no where.
I agree with the OP. At least for the time being since there seems to be some discrepancy between the wifi and wifi+3g software versions.
It doesn't hurt to add in the title of the thread or in the body of the OPs text to add something about whether it is compatible with wifi only and/or wifi+3g.
I know people can read pages and pages of a thread to find out about the compatibility but I think we should help each out and try to prevent as many soft bricks of the xoom as possible.

Wouldn't the first red flag be that the WiFi Xoom isn't even generally available until tomorrow? There hasn't been a need to make the discrepancy between 3G and WiFi models up to this point.
Do you expect methods to be made for the WiFi Xoom when its not even on sale unless you have a lucky store that decided to sell early lol.

Nope, I would expect it to be with and without a 3G mini pci card. There's no reason for the boot software to be different.

Idk it doesn't necessarily make too much sense for them to be different, but there's no reason to take it upon yourself to try it before its been approved or at least tested lol. Sorry but the first thing you should've done is the research to see if there are differences first. I think you could've waited 24 hrs and seen what people find out.
since u are sitting on a soft brick, try flashing tiamat and see if it fixes it. If not, a stock boot img should hit the interwebz in a matter of minute's.

My neighbor is a Best Buy manager he told me the higher ups know about these bricks. He was instructed NOT to take returns if the xoom is in this condition. I would imagine other stores are going to do the same!
The instructions on screen when you unlock clearly state that you are voiding the warranty. They shouldn't take returns on bricked xooms.

Everybody knows the root method was posted over a month ago, obviously that is for 3g xooms. The op knew what he was doing, the Guy who created that thread a month ago isn't coming bavk to change titles for you, make sure you read a guide that says wifi only root, personally that's what I would've done instead of blaming other people. If you're smart enough to root but can't figure that out I don't know what to tell you. That said you have 15-30 days to return your stuff as long as its not physical damaged, best buy has to take it back, don't listen to the other guy who said differently

Its really no big whoop. I use my TF normally, I keep it stored in a small neoprene laptop case. The s/n sticker is peeling and the back sticker which hass all the model info numbers and such is also peeling. I thought they would last longer than a couple of months. I dont own a KB yet but I assumed the big rear sticker was really for being able to slide the TF into the slot so as not to scratch up the back. Anyone else getting peeling stickers?
Perhaps a little contact cement will hold them. I had a similar issue with one of my cameras and contact cement made the serial # sticker permanent.

Mine is a bit, I would just take a note of the serial number etc and take the stickers off if it is annoying you, the sticker on the back just holds the FCC etc and isn't important.
Wow - one of the first things I did was to remove those stupid stickers!! Surely, then can get the S/N from the inside somewhere if they needed to, right??

Yes, but you do need it if you have to RMA your unit. As long as you have the box or the manual you should be ok (the S/N is on both these items).

Same thing here. Those stickers didn't look like they were meant to hold on except for in the box.

just to let you know, you can NOT get the s/n inside the tablet. I know this because my friend's tablet died and it was kind of a pain to RMA since his tablet never had the s/n sticker on the tablet itself and he threw the box away. But I did find out that the s/n is on the warranty card.
Ripped off stickers here as well, first thing I did. They should really be permanently etched into the case.
Does nobody keep their boxes anymore? The sn is on the box =p

In today's market of get it out first then fix it later if customers complain enough you almost have to keep the box until out of warranty so it can go back.
Sticker definitely does not feel permanent. Disappointing considering the information listed. My old skool mp3 player (zune) has it etched into the back, looks good.
I don't think either of the 2 tablets I have received had serial numbers on the actual unit.
So does mine, I was considering tearing them off - is there any reason to keep them on?

Otherwise, if my 6 month old Transformer breaks, I can just go buy a new one, put the new one's serial number sticker on the old one and then return the old one as if it were only a few days old.... Definitely not working for any company, and I have developed many Android ROMs and never had this problem. I've been here since 2005, for crying out loud. This is my first Samsung ROM, so I admit to being new there. I will even accept your "stupid idiot" comment, as I guess I deserve it. Although, I wonder why 150 people have downloaded it and only two or three people that I can see have been bricked. Something must connect those with issues. We need to find what it is.
Also, I am happy to pay for the de-bricking of those who are legitimately bricked i.e., followed instructions, have a receipt from JTAG, or whatever it is). Just PM me.

Absolutely. I understand. I have gotten into many messes since i started developing, and know that panic. I just need to know everything you.and the other user who had this problem can tell e about your device so i can find out what the common denominator is. So, confirm it is the wifi and 3g version you are using, and what build you are coming from, if you would. Are you using a sim card? Have you tried pressing power and volume up for a while? Thanks. Also, does your tablet feel hot at all?

Well I used yours as a base, just chopped the usual crap out, resigned, flashed, everything seemed OK. Initiated reboot, bam, doesn't turn on.
Charged all night, tab is hot along left edge, so I'm guessing still charging. 8600.

first we need to get the device powered so maybe remove and return battery could do something?? but how?
any external way to use it throw usb slot while charging ?
I would try pulling the battery but have no idea how to get the case off.
Steve, just wondering out loud whether those who have the hard-brick issue be because there are on pre-production hardware, so they have a slightly different hardware SKU. Hence your ROM does not work for them.

That seems to be the case for one of them. I am not positive about the others. I am having a hard time getting people to just tell me what build they were using prior to the flash...There seem to be 3 people who have had this porblem, and there must be something linking them, although it may be something random. Need to figure it out.

I came from P6800ZSKL2. Dont know if it was from the very first production line, but judging by the quality (i bought three, all with crap displays) they probably were.
Also, i believe the device is on and trying to unpack something because it is indeed warm.
This of course means that there may be hope of getting into download or recovery yet... i will drain it for 34 hours and then attempt to turn it back on.

BTW, his "suggestion" was "incorrect." Still not sure what's up. Will keep posted, and like I said, I'll work something out with JTAG for those who got bricked yesterday and posted about in in the original thread before I responded.

For the record hard bricks on the Exynos 4210 will occur generally in one of 3 ways:
1) Mis-matched boot.bin and sbl.bin
2) Incompatible boot.bin and sbl.bin combo
3) Invalid PIT file flash from an earlier generation TAB or Galaxy S device
Anything else causing a black screen is simply hardware failure.

I would like to change the SNID of my Tablet.
I sent my out of warranty tablet in for repair to Acer, it had a dead Mother Board.
I used the back panel off of my other tablet with a good warranty and SNID bar code.
When the tablet came back it has the SNID of the back panel i used.
So now I have two tablets with the same SNID.
I would like to change it back to the old SNID.
Any one no how to change the SNID?
I know how to change it on an ACER PC but not the Tablet.

You had an issue with 1, so you changed (for some reason), the EXT SD pnl of a good one, with the one that was bad? Then when you received the repaired tablet, it has the same SNID as the other?????
Why would you do something like that, unless you were trying to "cheat" acer, by pretending that the tablet you sent for repair, was actually out of warranty. (by using a ext sd panel of one that was within warranty).
Sounds pretty low to me....

I tried to get Acer to help repair the tablet they gave all kind of excuses why they would not honor the warranty.
So I used the SNID with no questions asked.
That is not cheating or low, it is fair!

Like I said - you cant. They can, however. They issue new SNID's when tabs get sent out to be refurbished by their partners - even they can't change/issue an SNID, only Acer can.

Mate, to have 2 tablets, and change the EXT SD card covers, is not exactly fair, to change the cover which is out of warranty with another which is in warranty. And in the end, you have 2 tablets with the same SNID numbers.
I should ask which country do you live, as warranty policy is different from other countries. This I know.

This is deceitful, and in most countries against the law, regardless if you own 2 tablets of the same type. This is something I witnessed when I was abroad in the military.
This is why you have 2 tablets with the same SNID. It's what you did, and you have to live with it. You will have to call Acer and explain to them.
I suspect there is more to this story than what is told.

I suppose the OP could call them and say he swapped them by mistake when looking inside the tablet, as he is a technology fan. He thought putting the wrong backs on wouldn't make a difference so didn't bother to check the SNID. But eventually it comes down to a matter of social engineering
Either way, we can't reprogram the EC ROMs with new SNIDs. Nobody has those tools yet. Hacks are created with a need and you seem to be the only person that needs to falsify their SNID ;P
On the moral issues - if the tablet was out of warranty and you did then you're wrong and Acer will probably charge you to fix it themselves. If the tablet still had warranty and Acer were being nasty and not honouring it (i.e. because it was close to the end etc.) then I would have probably done the same thing in your situation

Quite likely. Many companies are like that these days. Very hit & miss. I had an acer laptop issue and they just told me to reformat it. Wtf.

Thanks, but ignoring that part of it (as well as any moral implications). Are there problems with Google Play or apps or something? I mean, it seems like mission accomplished. I'm just trying to wrap my tiny brain around why this is a problem... Not at all important, So it is ok to let this die...
Just din't want to have any warranty confusion down the road.
Seems simple enough a question but I guess the whole SNID thing must be a BIG SECRET. I have repaired many PC's and laptops and set the serial number back to match the case after installing a new mother board. In the case of the PC's and laptops it is incoded in the bios, so the biois needs to be edited. Esay enough to do with the correct tools. Thought there might be something similar for the Tablets but it seems the subject is taboo.

I'm in need of how to change a SNID back, or at least explain to me how the hell I inadvertently changed it. I was running Taboonay from about 2 years ago, and decided to flash ICS (Taboonay 3.0). I got into it, and honestly didn't like most of the ICS, so I wanted to go back. Flashed CWM 1.7 from acer recovery, and installed an old 3.2 rom from a file I downloaded from link here on XDA: Acer_500_4.010.38_COM_GEN1 (the vache link from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1159443) The update.zip didn't work when I extracted it, so I put the update.zip on a thumb drive, and used CWM 1.7 to flash it, and it worked. I lost my CWM, but that was no biggie.
But now, my SNID is 696660736xe, and I don't know where the hell that came from. Is it one of yours vache? lol
I guess my question is, where inside the standard rom zip files is the SNID stored? Or did my Abe Lincoln frankenstein zombie black magic create a SNID in the 8th dimension and beam it into my a500 (I'm hoping the later of the two!!!)
To be honest I only want to change the SNID in case I do something naughty with my tablet, I don't want someone else's tablet to be punished for it
Not sure if it is the same id but titanium backup has an option to change the Android ID. Noticed this a while back after a factory reset and when restoring my titanium backup. Gave me a change to keep the new id or change back to what it was.

man youve posted this everywhere im trying to look into this if xdasupporthelpedme actualy did change his SNID by flashing one of vaches .zip then it must be possible right ???
EDIT: i found the imei or android id i believe to possbly be in /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
dont know if its changeable though :/
is it possible for the serial number to be programmed into flash then the bootloader passes it to the kernel via kernel command line?? just wandering

weird delivery from staples

Boght fire tv for someone from staples I was hoping to root it .. nope it had newest firmware and was updated on Dec.2 too bad... but that's fine.
It shows there were 2 remotes used 2 serial numbers (one is the one I just activated) and other one.
You guys think they sent me used one? or it was simply opened to update? everything looked brand new though..

Go to aftvnews.com and use the serial decoder. You could tell what fw you should have had and probably figure out if it had been opened before.

I did it has shown "Rootable" and when I opened I saw it was updated on Dec.02.
Should I complain to staples about this? what you think?
I got around the root modules etc.. I needed so it's fine without root for this particular fire TV.

You should returned it asap, if the store accepts the return that were bought online and buy another one, just make sure it is one of those serial number and serial number seal is not broken.
Or just walk in to a staples buy a new one that has root able serial numbers and then go home open i andt put the other one in box and take it back to store and say it is defective you cant connect to internet either via wifi or ethernet so they will send it back to Amazon and wont re-sell it. Since the amazon device it self does not have any serial number labled that matches with the box there is no way they can confirm which one you giving it back....

I was on chat with staples chat and my chat closed because it was after 8 PM EST I think he was about to prepare me a pickup @ my closest store and return the used one to staples via ups or something.
I will call them soon.
Just called them and the lady said just to go to the store and swap it and pack it how it came and just bring a receipt..
So now I need to find out how do I factory reset thing thing lol.

People should stop believing that anyone can tell if their fire tv is rootable by looking at the serial number, cause its impossible. I got three fire tv boxes at different times and none are rootable, but the decoder says they are. its just someone trying to take a guess and there are zero facts to say otherwise. Its funny how some people will believe anything that they read. I personally think that its a crap shoot, and that they update the boxes themselves, but sometimes they do not have the man power or time to get around to doing all the updates so some people will get rootable boxes and some won't. At least that is what I was told by more than one person that works there that I personally know, and I'll believe them before I beleve some crackpot that thinks he has decoded which can be rooted by looking at the serial number. I live less than 40 miutes away from Amazon in Lexington KY and its not uncommon to know a few people that work or have worked for Amazon. So I am beyond positive they are right about why some boxes are rootable and some are not, since they are on the inside, so they seem 100% more legit then a crackpot. Especially when different people, that actually work there, have told me the same exact way that they update fire tv boxes and why some boxes do not get updated.

Sure it will not always worked but the decoder is just guide not 100% guaranteed but if you get one of those serial number, you have better chances that it will have root able firmware but you wont know until you actually see what is actually installed on the box
Personally, i am just thankful someone took time out to put the guide out there for free.
However, if someone is in the market i would still try to buy a box with one of those serial number. I bought 2 and they both were root able.

Take your negativity else where. AFTVNews put a lot of time and effort into the decoder and everything else they do. Sure nothing is 100% but something is better than just a 'Crap Shoot' on it's own.
I actually just checked the serial number on aftvnews just because I was curious... but my fire tv was indeed used so I am going soon to exchange it (staples said I can do it there)
Update: store didn't have it in stock staples already sent me Return label (told me to ignore it lol ok)
have to go another store soon. Apparently they have 2-3 in stock.

The truth is only negative when someone cannot handle it. That is not my fault. When someone does something and says it is fact, but then states that it is not 100% confirmed for every device, then its not factual, period. I am beyond positive that his crackpot method is beyond flawed. Sorry if you cannot handle me saying it.

It even says on his site that its not 100%. And you can't believe what someone who works at a place says either. Unless they actually work doing wat they are saying then they could be full of ****. People like to make up **** for the departments/sections at their job that they don't do them selves and then it spreads to other people until people think its fact. I use to deal with that type of **** all the time.
