weird delivery from staples - Fire TV General

Boght fire tv for someone from staples I was hoping to root it .. nope it had newest firmware and was updated on Dec.2 too bad... but that's fine.
It shows there were 2 remotes used 2 serial numbers (one is the one I just activated) and other one.
You guys think they sent me used one? or it was simply opened to update? everything looked brand new though..

Go to aftvnews.com and use the serial decoder. You could tell what fw you should have had and probably figure out if it had been opened before.

I did it has shown "Rootable" and when I opened I saw it was updated on Dec.02.
Should I complain to staples about this? what you think?
I got around the root modules etc.. I needed so it's fine without root for this particular fire TV.

You should returned it asap, if the store accepts the return that were bought online and buy another one, just make sure it is one of those serial number and serial number seal is not broken.
Or just walk in to a staples buy a new one that has root able serial numbers and then go home open i andt put the other one in box and take it back to store and say it is defective you cant connect to internet either via wifi or ethernet so they will send it back to Amazon and wont re-sell it. Since the amazon device it self does not have any serial number labled that matches with the box there is no way they can confirm which one you giving it back....
Thank you

I was on chat with staples chat and my chat closed because it was after 8 PM EST I think he was about to prepare me a pickup @ my closest store and return the used one to staples via ups or something.
I will call them soon.
Just called them and the lady said just to go to the store and swap it and pack it how it came and just bring a receipt..
So now I need to find out how do I factory reset thing thing lol.
Thanks guys !

People should stop believing that anyone can tell if their fire tv is rootable by looking at the serial number, cause its impossible. I got three fire tv boxes at different times and none are rootable, but the decoder says they are. its just someone trying to take a guess and there are zero facts to say otherwise. Its funny how some people will believe anything that they read. I personally think that its a crap shoot, and that they update the boxes themselves, but sometimes they do not have the man power or time to get around to doing all the updates so some people will get rootable boxes and some won't. At least that is what I was told by more than one person that works there that I personally know, and I'll believe them before I beleve some crackpot that thinks he has decoded which can be rooted by looking at the serial number. I live less than 40 miutes away from Amazon in Lexington KY and its not uncommon to know a few people that work or have worked for Amazon. So I am beyond positive they are right about why some boxes are rootable and some are not, since they are on the inside, so they seem 100% more legit then a crackpot. Especially when different people, that actually work there, have told me the same exact way that they update fire tv boxes and why some boxes do not get updated.

Sure it will not always worked but the decoder is just guide not 100% guaranteed but if you get one of those serial number, you have better chances that it will have root able firmware but you wont know until you actually see what is actually installed on the box
Personally, i am just thankful someone took time out to put the guide out there for free.
However, if someone is in the market i would still try to buy a box with one of those serial number. I bought 2 and they both were root able.
thank you

You are totally out of line calling AFTVNews a crackpot after all he has done for the FireTV community. I remember your name from the i717 forums and you were negative there too. Please don't bring it here. We have a great community of respectful and helpful individuals.

^^^ +1
Take your negativity else where. AFTVNews put a lot of time and effort into the decoder and everything else they do. Sure nothing is 100% but something is better than just a 'Crap Shoot' on it's own.

I actually just checked the serial number on aftvnews just because I was curious... but my fire tv was indeed used so I am going soon to exchange it (staples said I can do it there)
Update: store didn't have it in stock staples already sent me Return label (told me to ignore it lol ok)
have to go another store soon. Apparently they have 2-3 in stock.

Got a replacement today from staples store!
status: rootable!
Controllers: only "1" the one I just activated.
Thanks for all suggestions!

The truth is only negative when someone cannot handle it. That is not my fault. When someone does something and says it is fact, but then states that it is not 100% confirmed for every device, then its not factual, period. I am beyond positive that his crackpot method is beyond flawed. Sorry if you cannot handle me saying it.

It even says on his site that its not 100%. And you can't believe what someone who works at a place says either. Unless they actually work doing wat they are saying then they could be full of ****. People like to make up **** for the departments/sections at their job that they don't do them selves and then it spreads to other people until people think its fact. I use to deal with that type of **** all the time.

[Q] Probably stolen A500

I have in my possession a Acer A500 that a "friend" asked me to look at for them. The thing is, I am almost certain he stole it... He has no job and has been caught red handed several times in the past with iphones, ipods, cell phones, etc that he stole.
I would like to find out who the original owner is of the tablet so I can give them an anonymous tip... The problem is, the security pattern is set on the device. I know how to do a hard reset, but I don't want to wipe any of the information that may be on the device....
Any ideas?
Yeah, give to to police.

Or persuade your friend to give it to police. You don't want to get into such a mess.

this is obviously not your FRIEND....
you obviously seem like a decent person by what you are wanting to do.
call the police and turn your friend in.. period. end of story.
if the person, the original owner, registered the unit you should be able to call acer and give them the s/n and your contact info and ask them to call the owner and give that person your info and have them call you so you can work out a time to meet up and you can give this person their item back.
i personally would try Acer first.
the police wont do anything but take the tablet, sit it in a evidence collection box, and in 6 months it will get auctioned off and the owner will never ever get it back.
Turn it in to police. Give them the Acer support phone number.they might be able to use the SN number to get thenright owner.if it were registered.
I CAN NOT STAND A THIEF
Good luck..
sell it to me with haft price
just kidding, actually, not sure this is stolen by your friend, so just give it back to him, and get out of this mess.
Sure sounds like a moral dilema. Police, as told by others here, probably wont be very useful. Your "friend" doesnt seem like he will do the right thing. All in all, if you dont try to figure out the owner, chances are it will never get back to him/her.
Maybe some of the other members here can confirm or not. Would booting into safe mode bypass the security pattern as it has done on several android phones?
there is a reason that I list the owners information on the lock screen lol.
Isnt there a way to adj some of the lock outs from booting into recovery?
You should either ask him for the unlock pattern (if it's not stolen, he should know it - you can tell him you want to check out the tablet, but really see the owner info) or just give it back to him and blacklist his phone number to never hear from him again. As you should know "I'm just holding it for my friend" is not much of an alibi for the police in the odd chance they manage to trace him.
Sent from my A500 using XDA Premium App
If I could be 100% sure that it was stolen, I would just give it to the police, but there is always the small possibility it is his. And you are right, he is not my "friend", but as the saying goes, keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
I've actually been trying to catch him stealing from me for a while, but I don't think he would ever take the bait because I would rain havoc down upon him (I have a bit of a temper).
I looked all over the tab for the serial number and it doesn't seem to be anyplace on the device itself... (PS. I also have a A500)
you can see the serial number on the back of microSD card cover.
Call Acer support and if the original owner had registered the serial then convince Acer support that you would like them to email the original owner, possibly forwarding your email or some way to contact you.
i would say find a cool cop and have him/her use their power as a law enforcer to help you cordnate with Acer to contact the owner. They might even direct you to an officer that's on pawn duty, their main focus is running serial numbers for reported stolen items in pawn shops and reterning them to their owners.
if it was stolen, and reported stolen the police will have the serial number. They would ask for it, which is on the box itself, when the report was filed. That is if it was reported stolen and if the original owner still had the box. By holding on to it you yourself are committing a crime, receiving stolen goods. I would either give it back to the douche or the police. If you go the police route they are going to want to know the guys name you got it from and you will be involved in the whatever actions follow. Even if you manage to get it back to the original owner most likely they will inform the police you had their stolen tablet and want to know how/who you got it from.
I haven't registered my tablet yet! Seeing this I'm registering right now!
Maybe its rooted? Worth a try to do an adb connection to it. Or at least connect to PC and see the contents of the I eternal sdcard? Maybe there's some contact info or a picture you can post up locally to see if anyone is recognized?

Wash your hands of it... Give it back to your douchey friend and forget you saw it...

What does he want you to look at for him?
If it is his he will have the unlock code. If he says he can't remember then it probably is not his.
I run into this problem every now and then. I work on friends and friends of friends laptops and computers as a hobby. If I get any that has apassword that needs booted up and they tell me they forgot it. It goes right back to them.
I was in a situation one time where I was curious to know so I did bypass and booted up in windows. Sure enough it was someone elses laptop. I just gave it back and said there was nothing I could do.
So know I don't even mess with them. No password. No fix.

If you suspect that you're in possession of a stolen item, report it to the police as found with no knowledge of it being stolen, would likely not be a big deal. Being in possession of a stolen item and reporting it to the police while knowing the suspect can and would likely be a hairy situation. Because if he really isn't much of a friend or prepared to throw you under the bus in retaliation....it's your word against his and you are the last one to have the item.
While I do think it's best that you notify the authorities,I suggest you give it back first. But on the other hand, you would likely be better off telling the authorities that he left the item with out you having any knowledge of it and knowing his character you suspect it's stolen. If you tell them you willingly accepted to hold on to the item......think of what you are admitting.

I'm almost certain that this is only the case if you *knowingly* receive stolen goods. And all I have is a suspicion, I could be wrong...
The tablet has been just sitting on my desk since I last posted, I almost forgot it was even there...
I will probably just end up giving it back to the dude who gave it to me, and tell him there was nothing I could do with it. He is completely ignorant when it comes to anything technology related. If I had any proof whatsoever that it was stolen, I would do something about it, unfortunately that is not the case.
You cannot just go around accusing people of theft without proof, I was hoping to find some on the tablet itself, but it doesn't look like that is going to happen.
I'll just have to catch him doing something else at another time (might be time to install a hidden cam focused on where I leave my wallet when I am home)...
Don't worry, his time will come...

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Smart Dock 50% off w/ free shipping - YMMV

This stupid dock has been perpetually out of stock since I got my Note 2. It would play peek a boo with us for usually 12 hours at a time before going out of stock again. Well, for those of you who want one, now's your chance to get one at half off.
https://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/EDD-S20JWEGSTA
This is YMMV, so take it for what it's worth. I had no trouble placing the order, and was off the phone inside of five minutes.
All you need to do is call Samsung's order hotline and place an order for the Smart dock. Tell the rep that you had been e-mailed a 50% off code last year when you registered your phone with Samsung, but the dock has been mostly out of stock since you got the code. The code is now expired, and you were told someone could reissue a new code to you when it was back in stock again.
The number is 1-800-757-0280.
The representative did not issue me a new code, but instead simply took 50% off of my order over the phone with no questions asked. She simply said, "Ok, that's fine. I'll just need your credit card and billing address, and it'll be $49.99 plus tax with free shipping."
Note that this dock also works with the Galaxy S4 as well.
If they ask you for your old code for some reason, just hang up and try again, or post in here, and I'll give you my old, expired code to use.
Receipt added to attachments.
Your Code
Could you PM me your code? The rep wanted it in order to generate a new one. Thanks

It would be easier to just call back and try to get a new person. Here's a 50% off code that was found in a Google search. rE169748w
Normally, they will just have you place the order over the phone, instead of issuing a new code.

Any reason this wouldn't work for the GS3 (current work phone). Also, I've heard that this only outputs to portrait mode--any recommendations on apps to force landscape mode--I see quite a few on the play market.
Thanks

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this...I just assumed with the wealth of knowledge on this forum, someone here might know the technical reasons why this would/wouldn't work w/ the GS3, as I'm much more likely to get a quick answer here vs asking a random email at Samsung.

Their staff is actually pretty knowledgeable if you call them up. Just ask for tech support or something. I know the S3 has MHL support, but I'm not familiar with the USB pinouts, which may be different than the Note 2. Quickest answer is going to be a short call to Samsung.

New FTV from Staples

I saw the day before yesterday that someone had posted about a sale at Staples for the FTV. I ordered one in the hopes that it might still be rootable. I paid $84 for it and had it shipped free. I got it the next day...(today).
Last week I purchased an older Dlink router for $15 because my high end router didn't allow URL blocking and I wanted to be able to block updates from it. Now I'm thrilled that I did! I have 5 of these units all setup perfectly to boot to XBMC the way I like and with all my shortcuts already installed although they were purchased from a young college computer science major who programs these better than any I've ever seen. Today I decided to try one myself.
3 or 4 times during the setup the unit started to download the new software and I pulled the plug to stop it out of sheer panic. When I finally realized that it was never going to boot up completely until I let it go through the entire setup routine I bit the bullet and trusted that the router would do the trick. The unit looked as though it made a complete download and also a complete install of the new software..... I knew I was doomed with an unrootable unit, but figured at some point someone would come up with a way to root the new firmware.
When it was all done I immediately went into settings and checked the firmware.... Low and behold the router did it's job and the unit had the old firmware on it!!! It's now rooted with XBMC installed and updates blocked thanks to the fantastic FTV utility posted on this forum. As far as I'm concerned I just got a unit for half price! If I had the extra money I'd get another one!
I only post this to thank everyone here who has answered ignorant questions from me and posted so many great ways to modify and install apps on this unit. In just a couple of weeks I feel as though Ive learned an immense amount of knowledge.... thanks to this site and it's great members!!!
Keep up the great work!!!
Good to hear man. Im guessing there are some units still out there. Although a gamble at best.

Just got the 2 new units already.....One day delivery....I'm blown away. I don't even have to open them to know they're rootable. The serial numbers on them are almost 10K below some of my rooted units. This store must be loaded with older units..... all three of these have very early serial numbers compared to the first loaded units I purchased on Fleabay. The prices on rooted units is on the rise... sellers must be running out of them.... They need to come out here in the sticks to get them!

I don't even have to open them to know they're rootable. The serial numbers on them are almost 10K below some of my rooted units.

Crazytala if you are looking to use xbmc on the box just sideload gotham 13.2 on it my new box has the latest firmware but gotham and addons like mash navi x livetv are all working fine on my non rooted box.
I just picked one up this week that was purchased at a Staples in Fort Worth Texas and it had rom 51.1.0.1_user_510055620 on it. Already have it clockwork modded, rooted updated and blocked future updates. If I had the money I'd go pick up a few more!
My local Staples had plenty and the clerk says that have not sold any yet. The firmware is rootable. I stayed up late last night rooting it, tonight I will finish the rest and get this baby running.
Guys, if you can pick up a rootable version, Would it be possible to get a shipping quote to the UK? I can pay via PayPal etc and would chuck in some more $ for the time.
I've got a UK Fire TV, but I don't see root coming anytime soon. I'd simply sell my unrootable on eBay. Would go along way of covering the one coming in. You can get rootable ones on eBay UK though shipped from America, but fees etc bump the price up.
Thanks

Poll - Battery overheating - Are you sending your tablet back?

Are you guys sending your tablets back to be replaced for the battery issue?
Voted yes because I have filed RMA for the battery issue. However it seems jury is still out as to whether Nvidia will require actual return of the old tablet. Poll could be reworded to capture this distinction. May vary by geography, too..
Marc
im sure people will figure out a way to make sure both tablets can be used
Well since the tablet has the potential to catch fire then it would be illegal to mail the tablet since you cant mail "flammables" right? lol
Yes new tab for 0€ of course

Yes, but I was conflicted about it. On one hand, I don't ever want my tablet to start on fire. But on the other, I've had FAR fewer issues with my tablet (i.e. zero) than I've heard of other people having, so I'm concerned that I'm sending in a flawless tablet and may receive in exchange a tablet that could end up with cracked corners and that becomes laggy, etc. Best case, my usage of the tablet is the reason I've had no issues with it, but I just don't know... I do use the hell out of it, so I'd have expected that if use was the cause, my tablet would've been laggy and heat up as much as anybody else's.
I'm RMAing, but I'm mixed on it. I bought it a week before the announcement and considered just returning it for a tablet with WiFi that actually works properly, but the features that I want the WiFi for others can't do as well anyway so I'll get the new one and hope the smart people around here figure out how to block the kill switch between now and then so I have 2. I am annoyed about the fact that they must have known before the announcement since they implemented the changes in ota 3.1 for the rma process and battery check, which would have taken time to plan, considering my unit was one week out of the store, one would think they would have pulled the flammable stock off the shelves and replaced with newer units.

Indeed recalled battery are prohibited by most courier, air freight and import, export are not possible under worldwide regulation even for recycling. So freight will be fairly expensive for those return if they elect to get them back.
Using ground local freight it could be possible but I am not sure about this.

We don't require you to send it back to us to receive the replacement and are collecting them only to make it less of a burden on everyone else who dont have drop off locations like that close by.

Wont the old tablet be rendered useless anyways? If Nvidia are kind enough to send me 2 replacements for the 2 that I have with Y01, then I'm happy to send them back.

Yes it will be considered useless but there is talk about some people wanting to install a custom rom and/or tricking it into not erasing itself and keep using it. I would like to keep mine for spare parts,I'll take out and recycle the battery and keep the device for spare parts like LCD screen and such.
country not listed
does anyone has made the recall process from a country that is not listed at the registration recall program???
thanks in advance

The way I see it is that now that Nvidia has presented us with an RMA option on these tablets, if you choose to continue to use it after getting the new one and it catches fire and burns down your house, you may be in limbo over your insurance payout.... "knowingly continuing to use a faulty product that has been recalled"...
I dunno, the moment my new ones turn up, if there is no requirement to return, the 2 I have will be dumped in a bucket of salt water to neutalise the battery, and binned :good:

I think he is right. If they are so fair. I don 't wan't to be fault if someone dies
I wanna keep it or give it to a friend or my dad since I can't sell it.
Its not fair nor legal to sell an affected tablet that can always catch fire or kills itself when restoring the factory image or possible after an OTA update.
Conflicted on whether or not I want to send mine back. One on hand, free tablet! But on the other. Nvidia didn't have to do this, they could of simply told us to RMA them, send them in, wait for repair and wait for them to send the tablet back. I haven't had any problems with the battery overheating or anything.

I'll be interested to know if there is a way around Nvidia's method of rendering the tablet useless..
Time will tell.
Has anyone received their replacement yet?

Got my replacement today. As others have noted the old one has not been killed. I flashed bliss pop just in case it may help but I turned it off and placed it in a box. Have not decided if I plan on keeping it or not. May, if it does not get killed, use it as a dedicated kodi box for my bed room

Got mine today. But as others have done. I wiped the device and installed SlimLP on the "RMA" device. I'll leave the other stock(rooted) for now and see what happens. But at the moment, as reported here, on reddit, on the nvidia forums and etc. The old devices arent locked yet. Maybe they are giving people more time to move data from one to the other? Who knows.
I'm in Australia and got the RMA approved email 2nd August, but have yet to receive any notification that my replacements have shipped .
Waiting on WIFI and LTE versions to arrive... I'll switch them off when I get the replacements and wait for a solution... I just hope they don't take too long issuing replacements to international buyers
I would guess that they would not issue the kill notice on these until all of the faulty units have been replaced...

If you want to keep your Shield Tablet tell Nvidia

Post on the Nvidia forums telling Nvidia you want to keep your old tablet. lots of people want to keep both tablets or have problems with the new ones so comment and let Nvidia know you want to keep them both. Share this with everyone so it gets some attention from Nvidia. Thread: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/865108/shield-tablet/if-you-want-to-also-keep-your-old-tablet-leave-a-post/
I wouldn't recommend keeping your old tablet. They are doing this recall because the older tablets could be dangerous; it's a safety recall. I understand wanting to keep the older tablet, I really do. Nvidia isn't going to tell people they should keep them; only dispose of them. I understand that we all think nothing will happen with ours, but that is usually when it does.
I'd rather they let me keep my pen and charger from the first tablet. But I don't want a possible fire hazard in my house. I haven't turned mine on since the recall.
I am sure this isn't going to be a popular post... but it is just how I see it.

Nvidia just said that we could keep them if we wanted:https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/867701/shield-tablet/clear-recall-info-from-nvidia-finally/ This guy got an official email saying they don't require that they be shipped back
Anyone from the UK got his/her replacement tab and kept the old one? I don't want to give the old back. Just wandering what to tell to the courier? I already disposed it?

That's not what it says. It says that if you disposed of the tablet, they will still send you the replacement. They aren't telling people to keep them.
I'd keep it got parts, or replace the battery with a good one. But throwing it out and then dropping yours and breaking the screen or something would be a real kick in the balls lol
