What CWM partition do you have? It may be too small for the ROM.

First of all, DO NOT regret flashing Android. Trust me, it's a very good decision and you will be happy with it once you've successfully got it running.
Secondly, see this thread, it will tell you everything you need to know.

Figured it out yet?

as a fellow new flashaholic i know it can be frustrating, but stick with it, android is far more stable and faster than windows ever was. there are several good tutorials to read through and I recommend you do read them.
Team blue droid, Boxmax and energy are good roms to start with, stable and easy to install.
---------- Post added at 07:00 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:56 PM ----------
There are 2 good tools you can use to assist easyandroid and HD2 tools.
CWM, clockwork mod is the recovery system you install after magldr, makes the process of reinstalling easier. the 5/280/5 or 10/300/10 you see with some roms is the settings to apply in easyandroid or HD2 tools.
most roms give you a good guide as to waht settings are system requirements are required. Most but not all need you to partition your sd card to act as an extension of the phones internal memory, hence the ext2, ext3 or ext 4 you often see in the threads.

[Q] Noob Question..Sorry..

Im a complete noob trying to get a hang of the smartphone rooting lingo. Believe me when i say that i know next to nothing. Ive just finally managed to root my x5 using z4root (i presume it worked...the reset was very fast...but i see that "superuser" is in the apps list now (not that i know what its for anyway.). The reason im trying to learn how to root and install roms etc is coz my x5 will not connect to my wifi and trust me, ive tried everything that has been suggested on other forums..ive tried all the basics. Im noob, but not THAT noob ok ^^. But i dont know what effects installing a custom rom might have on the wifi at this stage. I see that a custom rom can allow for wifi teethering. So im hoping that might help , sumhow. Its worth a try , before i throw the thing out the window ^^.
So basically anyway , my question is:
Ive rooted the phone (im pretty sure)....so what should i do next? and in the correct sequence, to get my phones hacked software up to spec with you guys?.
e.g ..do i install this clockworkmod thing next..and then a rom, then a kernel?...i dont know what any of these things are or what they are used for...so if anyone could give me a simple bullet pointed list of what to install and in what order...id be VERY VERY grateful =) ...its doing my head in trying to read through these tutorials and trying to figure out what everyones even talking about ^^". Dont have to get too carried away..just a simple list and the correct order will do...i will figure out the rest. (As long as you dont miss any step out of course e.g ...some app i might need to install a crucial app etc. ) Thank You!!

1) then download to your pc from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1067490 the recovery-en.zip which is the Clockwork Recovery and follow carefully the Detailed Installation from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13083454&postcount=1
2) go to this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059753 and download to your pc the one it says : Complete rom with all fixes and 1.5Ghz kernel
and then follow the instructions carefully from the same post...
then hopefully you are ready....
BUT BE CAREFUL AND READ EVERYTHING AND BE SURE THAT YOU HAVE UNDERSTOOD EVERYTHING BEFORE STARTING
//and an advice from me (i'm very new also in adroid) that in every step you should check again the steps from the posts so you don't forget something...

Ok, so far ive got as far as renaming recovery.img to recovery.bak and copied the new recovery.img into the same folder. So i presume clockwork recovery is installed now?.
Next i downloaded the 100mb ,or so, rom and have copied it to the sd card. But now i dont know how to "boot to clockworkmod". Is it the same as holding volume keys and power button?...coz if it is, when i do that part it comes up with a purple screen. Otherwise.....how do i boot to clockworkmod?..or does the purple screen mean that somethings not installed right?....
Thanks again.

Volume-Up + Power button should bring you to the recovery menu.
Excellent...Volume up +.....that made a difference. thanks for that..i shall now continue the process. Thanks =)
ok next problem...in clockworkmod i go to "apply update from sdcard"..then it says these things:
Install from SDcard
-Finding update package...
-Opening update package...
-E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(No such file or directory)
Installation aborted.
do i need to create an "sdcard" folder in the sdcard itself...then put the zip file in it?
nevermind ...i see it Matters which sdcard u put the rom onto....looks like its gota be the external one...not the internal one...ok ...moving on.....
well its all installed now. Thanks for the tips. Although it didnt fix my wifi - wireless router connection =x....wonder what it is =x
if you have your wifi with pass check if without encryption it connects...
just to see all the possibillities...
if you continue to have problems without encryption then some compatibility is the problem...
have you checked it with other wifi?
if this happens only with your router then you can search for a more specific solution...

Please help a newb flash a Streak

Hello guys,
please dont think i am lazy, i have read most of the topics here but i am now just more confused then before. There are so many solutions, do's and dont's that i have no idea how to do it.
I have managed to root my streak running android 2.2
I would like to flash it with a newer custom rom but i have no clue how to do it. Could please someone tell me step by step. I have downloaded half of the links shown here in the forum but still have no clue.
Also, could someone tell me what rom to pick. I wanted to flash the streakdroid 2 but i have read so many comments about low performance and other problems. Any other rom recommended.
Any help is greatly appreciated and i hope one day to be able to help others.
TIA
Ok first things first you need to flash streakmod or clockworkmod via fastboot. I prefer streakmod as I sometimes get errors with nandroiding on clockwork. Follow the guides for flashing custom recoveries in the threads for them. Once you've got a custom recovery just place the rom of your choice onto the root directory of your SD card (not in a folder). Then boot into recovery by holding volume up + power. At the first screen select option 2. The screen will turn black, press power. Once in the custom recovery select install update. Navigate to the custom rom and select it. Wait a minute for it to complete then select reboot. You're all set. I recommend booting back into recovery and doing a nandroid back up after you get everything set up. As far as roms go, I'd go for dj-steves 1.9.0 its the best IMO. Good luck!

Android Development is not for questions or Problems
Moving to General
Use StreakMod Recovery if you want a custom ROM, To flash a stock ROM you use the stock recovery. See this thread for a tool to help you flash the recovery you need. The latest version of StreakMod eliminates the step of hitting the power button and the nandroid backups work.
For stability use the latest Strekdroid Froyo version (1.9.0), SimpleStreak or a stock ROM. Read the development section here for other options.
Here is a page of Streak related links, lots of stuff there you may want to look at.

I don't have time to go into detailed steps for you right now, but here is what I can recommend:
Download and uncompress MultiRecovery Flasher from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000455
Flash StreakMod Recovery.
Download Simple Streak from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113256
Save this on the root of your sd card. For ease of use you can rename it update.zip
Install the drivers on your computer (assuming windows) for the Dell Streak. You can get them here:
ftp://ftp.dell.com/Handheld/R288920.exe
Reboot into fastboot mode. To do that, with the phone off, hold down the power button and the camera button at the same time. When the white screen comes on, release the buttons and then touch the fastboot "button" when presented on the screen. Now plug the usb cord in and the bottom of the phone should say something along the lines of Fastboot Mode or similar.
Run the MultiRecover Flasher and choose StreakMod Recovery. When this is done (it takes less than 1 minute normally), you need to boot into your new recovery. With the phone shut off, hold the power button and both volume buttons at the same time. When the screen with the 4 choices appears, choose option #2 (should be something about upgrading using update.pkg or similar). StreakMod will load. Browse the options here to see what's available. Go into advanced, then nandroid and make a full nandroid backup. This will take 5 - 10 minutes or so. Then do a data wipe/factory reset. Then the option to apply update.zip from sd card. If you had named your rom to update.zip and put it in the root of the sd card, choose update.zip from sd card again. If not, choose the other option and be presented with a list of files/folders on your sd card. Find your rom's .zip file and apply it. When it's done choose reboot now and enjoy. If you run into problems booting the first time, shut the phone down (it may require a battery pull to do so) and power on using the power button and both volume buttons and choose factory reset at that menu (this is the one you used to get into StreakMod recovery earlier). The device will end up rebooting twice (you really can't tell since it's always the Dell Logo, just takes longer) and you should be good to go.
If you have any questions, post them here and someone will be happy to help you along. I'm not an expert by no means, I've just done this several times as I like trying out the different Roms. The nandroid backup and restore options in Streakmod recovery is a godsend. If I install a rom and have problems, I can revert to what I had (settings, apps, layouts, everything) in just a few minutes with no computer required, all from the phone. Learn to love it.
I get so sick of all these retarded questions and threads.I have never seen anything like this...where EVERYTHING IS ANSWERED,EXPLAINED and still people say "Don't think I am lazy".
I know,if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it...but this is way too much.

I agree with you to a point, however when I bought my Streak back in February the first thing I did was come to this forum as I remembered it from my AT&T Tilt days. I started reading...alot. I got more and more confused myself. I read stuff like 318, 309, UK versions, US versions, etc. I didn't know what was compatible with what. I read more, and finally attempted something and it worked and I was hooked. But mind you, I'm a computer geek and understand how things work in the computer world. At work, I'm surrounded by people who don't and it amazes me how much hand holding I have to do for basic tasks. So I get it when people say they are confused. My rationale behind giving the OP the instruction that I did is that once he does it one time, he'll get more comfortable, understand the process a little more, and maybe start to understand some of the other stuff. Then who knows, in a couple months he may be motivated to make the next bada$$ rom for our loved devices. It could happen... ;-)
We all have to start somewhere.....and this forum is the place for it to happen, because of its wonderful, selfless members who are willing to lend out a helping hand expecting nothing in return.
Thank you so much guys. Got it all working and flashed the rom i got recommended, works perfectly.
I really havent been lazy. You just have ro understand that the start,is really hard for a beginner. I need to get into some basics, to understand what and why. I have flashed hundreds of wm phones but this is something different. I prefer to ask and be on the save side. How does it help either of us if i brick the device and ask after?
I really appreciate the people which dont get tired explainig something for the tenth time, this are the people which make this as big as it is.
Again, thank you so much for helping. I hope i ll be able to return the favor one day.

Do you need help .let us know were you are with the phone so i can help you .very difficult to brick a phone.
What exactly is going on with your phone? As long as your phone boots into Tri-Color recovery and reads as a USB when you plug the USB in, you're fine...and even then there's still plenty of possibilities to fix it, I've had my phone not even read USB and after trying tons of different ways it finally fixed itself.
I highly doubt your phone is broke, let the community here know what's going on and someone is bound to get you going; most people are helpful but as always, there's asshats like malaeus that ruin communities.

Not Bricked, Task29'ed....
You task29'ed but you have nothing else to flash after that, that is why you are where you are....Look go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1090783 It is Ksubedi's Tool for Nandroid on HD2. once download. Download a Rom. Since I'm helping you, i will not give specific instructions on YOUR choice of ROM but rather MINE, sorry that is how it works around here xD.
http://hotfile.com/list/1335611/19f8a51 go to this link and download this file, HD2_Core_Droid_Desire_HD_V1.6_TMOUS_NAND_ONLY_LEO1024.rar, should be the second one. This is Best EYE Candy(Smexyness) rom, created by Coredroid Team.
Once that is downloaded. Now come the Steps for working phone.
First Connect Phone to Pc and keep it connected throughout the whole process.

2. You enter tri-color screen, with USB bottom.

6. USB confirmed, On Ksubedi's Toolkit, Bottom Right Click Install MagLdr.

9. IF you don't succeed, Pop out the battery, and in again and power phone while holding "End Call" Button until you get to the Several Options, all in white.
10. Once at the Options in MagLdr. hit Volume Down Button til you get to Option "5.USB Flasher Mode" Hit "Call" Button
11. It will say "Wait USB..".... first, when USB confirmed, will say "Wait USB..USB"
Now Switch over to the CoreDroid V1.6 file you downloaded Earlier.
1.Extract File to a newly created Folder, and Open folder.
2. Wait for "Wait USB...USB"
3. In the New Folder, You will see something called DAF.exe, Right click and Run as Admin.
4. Follow Instructions. Blah Blah Blah.

If you have the Tri-Color screen. then you have bootloader, as for the USB thing that is supposed to be in the bottom, that will only appear after you connect the phone, VIA USB, to a PC. Now I don't know about the Linux situation, but word of advice, get your azz to your friends house cuz right now I don't think you wanna risk getting the phone even more f**ked up cuz of the PC software you have, well anyways do as I have stated, and that ROM i have linked is amazing fast and no issues watsoeever. And as for the ROM actually, Sergio is coming out with an update to 1.7, so try it out, and if you like it, go for 1.7. and actually, the process for flashing an update is not hard at all.
> as for your hd2, try flashing the original windows mobile rom,
Can someone help me with this.
I can not get the phone go in tri color screen mode.
Phone boots okay with Android installed but I like to switch back to T-Mobile WM version.
Power + Volume brings menu but does not force the phone in TRI color screen mode.

I think what malaeus meant was to not post in the development forum rather than to ask him to not post anywhere on XDA. I agree though that he could worded it with a little less inflammatory tone.
As for the OP, dude, you need to post all the details of what you have done for someone to be able to help you. Please post things like the current state of the phone (can it boot into bootloader or MAGLDR etc.)
Also your radio/ROM/MAGLDR version could help too.
I think the radio rom might be missing shouldnt it say that at top of bootloader magldr 1.13, hspl3 2.08, dont know the radio rom... I can do all the steps except when i get to the daf.exe file it says failed init. usb

[FLASHING ROMS] HTC EVO 4G 2.3 gingerbread how to flash roms

Hello again, everyone. This is going to be another one of my easy-to-understand, simplistic type tutorials. For all of the people that might not have an extensive knowledge of android and how to operate basic linux devices, this is going to be a noob level how-to on flashing roms. Most of these directions also go for kernels (not 100% of the time, but most), so just ask if you need help.
Alright, I'm going to assume that you're already rooted and have s-off, as well as a custom recovery menu, if not this tutorial will mean nothing to you. Go read my root tutorial if you need to accomplish this task.
My root tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1228566
How to flash roms:
(Step 1) Finding a rom. May sound easy, but you have to figure out what you want, and more importantly, what you need. There is a very diverse selection of roms here on xda so reading up shouldn't be too much homework for y'all. If you're not willing to do this little amount of work to just read and see what you want and need, then you are hopeless in the first place. I will, however, help you if you are putting a significant amount of effort into this process.
(Step 2) Downloading the rom. This is not hard at all. I get all of my roms and kernels (not including my own) from xda, and downloading has always been a breeze. I can't remember now if you need to sign up for xda or not in order to access downloading. If so, then you should sign up anyway, xda is great! The easiest way to download roms is to download them on the computer then plug your phone in as usb drive and just place them on the root of you sdcard. There is another way though, and it isn't much more difficult. Just go to the market and download the xda app, you don't need the premium (unless you want it) the free version is good enough. The app is pretty much just a mobile translation of the actual site, so finding something on the app that you found on the computer isn't too much of a pain. Once you have found it in the app, just download it, and it should be placed in the folder sdcard>downloads.
(Step 3) Making a backup. Go into recovery by powering down the phone and holding volume down and the power button until the hboot menu appears. Make sure before you actually power down the phone, that you have fastboot turned off. If it is on, then the phone will automatically do the fastboot procedure, instead of going to the hboot menu. How to turn off fast boot: home>menu>settings>applications>fastboot. Make sure that it is unchecked. Okay, at this point we are at the hboot menu. It may check for an image, but shouldn't find one. Just let it do its thing. Volume down to recovery and select it by hitting power. The phone should reboot into recovery. This next part may have some variation because there are a couple of different custom recoveries. Most of them are all going to operate the same though. Once you are in recovery, volume down to "backup/restore". Select it. ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP BEFORE FLASHING ANYTHING, I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING THAT GOES WRONG!! Now select "backup". It will start backing everything up. It usually takes about five minutes so be patient, if it looks like it froze then just wait it is probably just rendering. After it has completed go back to the previous menu and proceed to the next step.
(Step 4) Flashing the rom. To do this, have the phone in recovery and volume down to "install zip from sdcard". Select this then volume down to and select "choose zip from sdcard". Now navigate to where you put the file and select it. If you did the method of downloading it on the computer then putting it on the root of the sdcard, then it should be on the current menu. If you downloaded it using the method of the app, then it should be in a folder called "download/". Finding it is really simple, just navigate the folders until you see it. Once you have found it, select it and install it. This process might take a couple of minutes. Once it has completed, you can select the reboot phone option and power that baby up.
(Step 5) Troubleshooting. If you are in a bootloop, (a bootloop is when the phone is stuck booting up) then just take the battery out, put it back in and power it up to try again. If it fails again, then go back into recovery. (like we did before^) This is the reason we made a backup. Just volume down to "backup/restore" select restore and select the image you would like to restore. Again, this may take a few minutes, just let the phone work. After it is done you can just boot it up and it is like you never did anything. If this happens, then this whole process was a fail. But, on the bright side, you made the backup (hopefully) and avoided having to flash a stock RUU or bricking your phone. Just try again with more roms, you'll get the hang of it.
Here is a very good aosp rom that I, in know way, take credit for: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178834&highlight=omgb
This rom was created by user: r2DoesInc
I am in no way affiliated with this user and have no right over his/her rom.
Remember, the rom page will probably have directions also. If it calls for specifics, then make sure to carry out those specifics!
Congratulations, you now know how to flash roms, even if you are a noob!
Thank you so much xda for making this site where fellow androdians can come together and help one another.
Thank you to all my supporters and I hope you all found this tutorial to be quite resourceful.

soo pumped
finally got my evo 4g root tried miui thought it was incredible...until i tried cm7 rc1.....completely flawless but i cant find the savaged kernel to pair it....
You should try that rom that I linked. It's really refreshing to experience true gingerbread 2.3.5. I love it and I use it as my daily rom. But cm7 is pretty amazing also.
dont know why i was so dumb i went with rc1... rc4 is even better ...what link? ill check it out i just am still confused about flashing a rom and kernel i know fn noob haha
sorry for the edit i meant to say im confused about flashing them both because the evo has been out for so long but it seems like there isnt that much for them or way too much there isnt really an optimal flash yet with both kernel and rom
I think it's a little bizarre to assume that someone can root the phone, s-off, and get a custom recovery on the phone but not flash a rom.....

Haha, I agree. But still, if you used revolutionary to root, like in my tutorial, then it was all automated. By using that method, the user doesn't have barely anything to do except for some small stuff like taking out the battery and turning some functions off. I'm just being helpful because I too was once a noob.
This was super helpful thanks for the guide

I am new, but I have a question why you didn't mention wiping things before flashing the rom? While I saw many other tutorials emphasized on wiping menu in the recovery mode.
Is that really a necessary step or not?

It is necessary, believe me. Wiping everything in recovery except for SD card is important between ROM switches. Otherwise you will run into so many issues.

Once you have successfully flashed a ROM do you need to keep the Zip file for it on your SD Card in order for it to work or can you delete the zip file?

You can delete the Zip off your card once you are done flashing!

Thanks for posting this guide. It was huge helping me Root my first phone! I spent a ton of time researching, trying to soak it all in before I attempted to root and this thread was awesome!
Thank you

I'm confused - please help

**SORTED** :victory:
Never mind - I've removed my head from my ass and sorted it :silly:
Ok, so I've been away from flashing ROMs and playing with themes etc. for a while as I've been using my SGSII. However, the SGSII is now pissing me off so much that it's getting sent back and I'm going back to my HD2.
It's now running NexusHD2-Gingerbread V3.1a NAND and was thinking about upgrading the ROM to a more recent one. Only problem is it's changed since the last one I flashed using the RUU method. Now I've tried flashing PACman and PA_leo_beta ROMs and just can't get it to work.
I'm following the Natives Rom+EXT4 for New Users with peechurs guide but I just can't get it to do what the guide says.
I've partitioned my SD card and I'm using Magldr.
Can someone point me in the right direction here as I'm going out of my mind running in all these circles?
Cheers!

you need to start by telling us WHAT problem you're having, , its no good saying 'can you help' when we dont know whats wrong, , that thread is as good a guide as any other, so help us to help you by showing a little forethought and describe what step you are stuck on / getting odd results on.
Yeah, sorry - should've given a little more info!
I follow the instructions Magldr > Service > Boot Setting > AD SD Dir then selected the unpacked zip (PA_leo_beta_v2.15_div2a / PACman_leo_v1.2a_div3) and it keeps going back to the original boot menu.
I just can't get it to do anything else.
That's not howyou do it,you don't unpack the zip.

Yeah I figured it out last night and got it to work.
