[REQ] Flashable "lag-free" ROM

Thought maybe by now someone would make a workable flashable zip to flash basically stock vibrant firmware with the nand fix (the real method, not with 130 mb limit). If it is out there I apologize, but i'm almost sure I haven't seen it on here. And I'm referring to flashing via clockwork recovery. I've come from a G1 and really never had to do anything but download and hit the "flash any zip" option from recovery, and its a method i'm most comfortable with. Thanks for any direction you might provide.

This ROM doesn't use the NAND, it uses an EXT2/EXT3 partition on your SD card.

..since there is no way to magically make nand bigger than 128 megs (without soldering new chips on) I suspect "the real method" is the apps2sd method..

Both Methods require ROOT*
*Method 1 limits the space of app data, which can possibly cause issues*
*Method 2 requires writing a new Kernel, which comes with it's own possible issues*
I'm just getting irritated. I have a 1ghz phone with lag/gps problems. It seems whenever I need to whip out my phone for something quick those are always the times it screws up too, so i get 10x more frustrated but I didn't want this to become a phone i'm constantly flashing and its already happening because it wasn't made right in the first place. Anyone with lag fix able to post a backup they might have made? I'm just looking for solutions, and easier ways to get there.

Plus maybe i'm just biased but creating an EXT? I thought those days were over when I cashed in my G1. I just dont understand how using an ext on your SD can be faster than storing the data internally.

So I need to create an EXT partition first before flashing the above mentioned ROM? What are the recommended settings if any for size? And I partition through clockwork orrrr? I know there's probably an answer for all these questions but between people using UK firmware/unfamiliar terms I don't want to jump into anything without missing a step.

Just go to the userinit thread and apply it... No need to flash a whole rom... Just partition your sd and flash the zip...
I ran jf rom on my g1 for like 2 months before a rom that dramatically changed anything...
We were so gracious for just that... Be patient this is new hardware.. Look at the international development section... We have made a lot of progress in 3 weeks..

I dunno, why waste time posting that question when you can simply read on if you have no advice? The strange things we do. And yes it is new hardware, hence why I ask these questions before I dive into something I'm unfamiliar with. Id rather ask questions and wait than waste hours trying to get my phone to turn on again after jumping the gun. My question that still stands is with the partitioning. With my g1, it was cut and dry on Amon Ra, did it right in recovery, so is there anything like that for us vibrant owners? I've never used ADB or anything of that nature, so I come from a download and flash world, so excuse my unfamiliarity and please dont take it as me complaining that it's not easy enough to do.

Look how long it took for the g1 to get where it is at now? Eventually it will come. You think your the only who would like to have a lag free rom? If you would have done some reading on the development side, you would have noticed there were a couple of fixes and also some progress. Ask questions on those threads over there as far as the speed and if it will suit your needs.

Learn ADB if you want to hack a Vibrant. Without a keyboard, we can't do shells in recovery without it. There are tutorials, so I won't repeat them. Logcat is also very useful and low level devs won't be able to help you if you run into problems and can't provide a log.
Partitioning. DO NOT USE CLOCKWORK/ROM MANAGER. Right now it will partition the phone's INTERNAL flash, which is cause boot loops and you will have to Odin flash the phone back to stock to make it boot again. Use a computer and a card reader with Paragon, Gpartd, etc.. Or a G1 with Amon RA, or adb shell into clockwork recovery and use fdisk.
EXT size, doesn't really matter. You don't need a ton. I use 1GB and it's using about 180MB. For EXT type, use ext3 with the stock kernel, or, if you install JACs kernel, ext4 is faster and more reliable.
Note that partitioning on the phone in recovery via fdisk won't format the partitions. Flash my e2fsprogs ZIP file in JACs kernel thread for the versions that support ext4.
Before you start messing with this stuff, download the stock Odin flash files from the thread in development. If you mess something up, you can get back to stock. You should also get ADB and the Samsung drivers installed. Then get Titanium backup and make backups. When you install Clockwork, do a nandroid as well. Backups are GOOD.
Keep in mind, we are in the early stages of learning how to hack on these phones. We won't get to the level the G1 is at for a while. Go read the threads in the G1 dev forum from a year ago and you will see a lot of recommendations for learning adb, partitioning manually, and all the other stuff we are doing here on the Vibrant. It's a process. If you want flash and forget, you need to wait a while still. We're working on it, but we aren't there yet. This is new hardware and a whole new way of doing things.

No one is asking you to take a chance on bricking your phone hard or soft. I was implying more that you could learn or develop your knowledge of what others have placed in front of you. Everything takes time, rather "wasting" it on a procedure you don't understand, "waste" it on learning it, then do it. You have everything you want to know right in front of you. If you searched and read hard enough you'd now be able to "answer the questions yourself" to where you understand it.
Oh and just to let you know there is a flashable "lag-free" Rom in the Dev forum. While its bare, it is still doing wonders on this phone!

I'm glad my stuff has been useful to the community. I'm a little shocked to see it integrated into a ROM and a kernel so far.
As for how I do it, what's the quote about standing on the shoulders of giants? I learned a ton reading posts and scripts from Cyanogen, Firerat, Eugene, and many others. Combine that with running Linux boxes for a few years, and you pick up enough to contribute a bit. Most of what I'm doing is adapting G1 hacks to work on the Vibrant, but I'm glad people like them.
Now if we could just get Samsung to give us decent GPS and compass drivers, maybe a tasty Froyo?

I am also using ADW instead of TouchWiz, which seems to help quite a bit.

How beneficial is it to do this? Should I wait for better ROMs? I am nervous about rooting my device as many are defective after a week or two and need shipped back.

[FLASHING ROMS] HTC EVO 4G 2.3 gingerbread how to flash roms

Hello again, everyone. This is going to be another one of my easy-to-understand, simplistic type tutorials. For all of the people that might not have an extensive knowledge of android and how to operate basic linux devices, this is going to be a noob level how-to on flashing roms. Most of these directions also go for kernels (not 100% of the time, but most), so just ask if you need help.
Alright, I'm going to assume that you're already rooted and have s-off, as well as a custom recovery menu, if not this tutorial will mean nothing to you. Go read my root tutorial if you need to accomplish this task.

How to flash roms:
(Step 1) Finding a rom. May sound easy, but you have to figure out what you want, and more importantly, what you need. There is a very diverse selection of roms here on xda so reading up shouldn't be too much homework for y'all. If you're not willing to do this little amount of work to just read and see what you want and need, then you are hopeless in the first place. I will, however, help you if you are putting a significant amount of effort into this process.
(Step 2) Downloading the rom. This is not hard at all. I get all of my roms and kernels (not including my own) from xda, and downloading has always been a breeze. I can't remember now if you need to sign up for xda or not in order to access downloading. If so, then you should sign up anyway, xda is great! The easiest way to download roms is to download them on the computer then plug your phone in as usb drive and just place them on the root of you sdcard. There is another way though, and it isn't much more difficult. Just go to the market and download the xda app, you don't need the premium (unless you want it) the free version is good enough. The app is pretty much just a mobile translation of the actual site, so finding something on the app that you found on the computer isn't too much of a pain. Once you have found it in the app, just download it, and it should be placed in the folder sdcard>downloads.
(Step 3) Making a backup. Go into recovery by powering down the phone and holding volume down and the power button until the hboot menu appears. Make sure before you actually power down the phone, that you have fastboot turned off. If it is on, then the phone will automatically do the fastboot procedure, instead of going to the hboot menu. How to turn off fast boot: home>menu>settings>applications>fastboot. Make sure that it is unchecked. Okay, at this point we are at the hboot menu. It may check for an image, but shouldn't find one. Just let it do its thing. Volume down to recovery and select it by hitting power. The phone should reboot into recovery. This next part may have some variation because there are a couple of different custom recoveries. Most of them are all going to operate the same though. Once you are in recovery, volume down to "backup/restore". Select it. ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP BEFORE FLASHING ANYTHING, I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING THAT GOES WRONG!! Now select "backup". It will start backing everything up. It usually takes about five minutes so be patient, if it looks like it froze then just wait it is probably just rendering. After it has completed go back to the previous menu and proceed to the next step.
(Step 4) Flashing the rom. To do this, have the phone in recovery and volume down to "install zip from sdcard". Select this then volume down to and select "choose zip from sdcard". Now navigate to where you put the file and select it. If you did the method of downloading it on the computer then putting it on the root of the sdcard, then it should be on the current menu. If you downloaded it using the method of the app, then it should be in a folder called "download/". Finding it is really simple, just navigate the folders until you see it. Once you have found it, select it and install it. This process might take a couple of minutes. Once it has completed, you can select the reboot phone option and power that baby up.
(Step 5) Troubleshooting. If you are in a bootloop, (a bootloop is when the phone is stuck booting up) then just take the battery out, put it back in and power it up to try again. If it fails again, then go back into recovery. (like we did before^) This is the reason we made a backup. Just volume down to "backup/restore" select restore and select the image you would like to restore. Again, this may take a few minutes, just let the phone work. After it is done you can just boot it up and it is like you never did anything. If this happens, then this whole process was a fail. But, on the bright side, you made the backup (hopefully) and avoided having to flash a stock RUU or bricking your phone. Just try again with more roms, you'll get the hang of it.

finally got my evo 4g root tried miui thought it was incredible...until i tried cm7 rc1.....completely flawless but i cant find the savaged kernel to pair it....

You should try that rom that I linked. It's really refreshing to experience true gingerbread 2.3.5. I love it and I use it as my daily rom. But cm7 is pretty amazing also.

dont know why i was so dumb i went with rc1... rc4 is even better ...what link? ill check it out i just am still confused about flashing a rom and kernel i know fn noob haha
sorry for the edit i meant to say im confused about flashing them both because the evo has been out for so long but it seems like there isnt that much for them or way too much there isnt really an optimal flash yet with both kernel and rom

I think it's a little bizarre to assume that someone can root the phone, s-off, and get a custom recovery on the phone but not flash a rom.....

Haha, I agree. But still, if you used revolutionary to root, like in my tutorial, then it was all automated. By using that method, the user doesn't have barely anything to do except for some small stuff like taking out the battery and turning some functions off. I'm just being helpful because I too was once a noob.

I am new, but I have a question why you didn't mention wiping things before flashing the rom? While I saw many other tutorials emphasized on wiping menu in the recovery mode.
Is that really a necessary step or not?

It is necessary, believe me. Wiping everything in recovery except for SD card is important between ROM switches. Otherwise you will run into so many issues.

Once you have successfully flashed a ROM do you need to keep the Zip file for it on your SD Card in order for it to work or can you delete the zip file?

You can delete the Zip off your card once you are done flashing!

Bricked?

A good friend of mine supposedly shut off his A500 during a upgrade/update. The unit still powers on but all I can get it to show is "boot verified failed..." in the upper-left corner of the Acer screen. I've downloaded several ROMs and tried reflashing from the SD card but no luck in reviving this. All I get is the Android triangle. I've reformatted the SD card. I've tried the Vol + power + screen lock stuff, too. I can't get to any other screen to change any settings... period. Many of the ROMs that I would like to try are dead links now that the government has shut them down. This is a US unit. Would someone be kind enough to direct me to where I can get the right stock ROM so I can at least get this thing running for him?

Thanks for your response and it DOES look like it would work... IF I could access anything on the tablet - like enabling USB Debugging, etc. I can't get to it. What I need is something I can flash or boot right from the SD card as that's the only thing I have access to.

with this you do not need to have access to nothing. Download the file From the thread above to your windows pc. OPEN THE Zip file. it will have all the tools and A VERY DETAILED set of instructions. Find the instruction file and fallow it.
Many people have used this with ease. If you want help just flashing another.zip file. post the rom that was on the tablet . the recovery installed as well.

OK, I tried it out and it doesn't pick up the tablet as I don't think USB debugging is enabled and I have no way to enable it. That's why I'm asking for a method to flash it from the SD card.
BTW, I found the S/N inside the SD card door.

You could try decrypting one of the update roms;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878
Note that some are encrypted, and you have to de-crypt with the tool listed there.
Extract and copy the update.zip. Copy to SD.
Boot by vol- or vol+, and see if it will install.
There are a couple of other tips in the threads, like toggling the button for Portrait lock, to force the tab to start formatting.

Thanks VERY much! I swear I must have tried these before and they didn't work. However, I missed one important step - unzipping the update.zip from the file! DOH! I feel really stupid but the tablet is running 100% perfectly.

No, I haven't used that method, since my HTC desire. Same principle though.
I'd tell you the principle behind it, but it's rather long.

MD, i was unable to download any of the 3.0.1 update files. When i click on the link it takes me to some xml tree. is there any other place where i could download?

Hello All,
I was running ICS ota on my a500, I am trying to boot with recovery, and it gives me an icon of android with gears and reboots, with the following error:
Not legal! Abort
The blob package is not official ~Abort!
After which it just shows the word android and blinks every few seconds.
My a500 was not rooted.
I tried afew things posted on the forums, civato method, downloading a previous OTA and running it. nothing works.
Please help....

When i start up normally the screen shows the word ANDROID and stay`s on that.
volume down and power android puppet with exclamation mark.
Volume up and power give`s me the menus skrilax bootloader V6 reboot- fastboot mode – Boot recovery – Set Boot secondary Kernel image – Set Debug mode on – Wipe cache.
I have tried all options.
Finally holding reset and power button down and after 3 sec release power and 1 sec after that the reset
When I use Blackthund3r`s flashtool v0.4 I get the message no APX mode devices are connected.
Can you help me out? Preferably whit a Dutch recover.

[SOLVED] Vibrant Root Concerns

Hey there. I rooted my Vibrant successfully, but realized I left some important things out. I used this guide to root my Vibrant: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723479
The problems:
1) I can't nandroid (not that I need to, I only have 4 apps)
2) I would like to install either Miui v4 or CyanogenMod 9 but cannot as my recovery screen does not show me the options to do so (I only get the 4 options you normally would get unrooted, such as "Reinstall Packages"), so I'm stuck with the lame default homescreen.
3) I'm currently on 2.1-update1; should I upgrade to 2.2? If so, must I unroot to upgrade, and then reroot? And if this were the case, how do you unroot, and can I reroot using the same method in the link above?
Also, I was looking at this guide: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Sa...te_Guide#Installing_the_ClockworkMod_Recovery
and noticed the line "This guide assumes the Samsung Vibrant already has Android 2.2 build UVKB5 already installed on it."
Does this mean 2.2 is required to install the CWM Recovery?

I'm not sure how you don't have CWM recovery if you followed the guide as it is written. Maybe its because the 2.1 is updated? I would do the following and see if that's all it takes. You definitely don't want to update to stock 2.2 via Kies or anything of that nature.
Worst case scenario, we can have you Odin back to stock JFD. You'll be smooth sailing from there.
Search the forums and find the update.zip for CWM for our Vibrant.
Put that on the lowest level of your INTERNAL storage. Not your microsd card. For example f:\update.zip
Now go to your boring 4 option stock recovery and select reinstall packages. It will reboot to the same boring screen. Select reinstall packages again, and it will reboot into Clockwork Mod Recovery.
Let me know if that does anything for you. Also what version of stock recovery do you have?

Can pull that directly from my signature, if OP wants. (Only works on Eclair [JFD] build btw)
Also OP, You will have to have a ROM that you are going to want to flash saved on your Internal SD card. Jsut download it, put in a folder and follow the ROM OP's instructions. Since you are fresh and new, I would NOT suggest flashing anything of ICS or JB until you get the hang of things first.
Read, read and then read somemore. When it comes time to flash ICS or beyond, there is a guide in my signature. Good luck and make sure to hit Toast's "Thanks" button. He is a good asset to have around here.

I'll try the Odin thing out first before I even try to flash (you need root first before flashing, I'm assuming). Just out of curiosity, what is JFD and Odin? I'm still gonna try it out using the guides found here, but just curious.
EDIT: Damn, it worked like a charm! Now I have CWM. The mistake I made was that I only installed the Superuser/ROOT and not both. Gonna play with it for a bit now

An overwhelmed noob

I have this shinny new powerful phone and I have no idea what to do with it. I've never got too deep into cell phones. But I want to get the most out of this phone. I pay a lot to be able to use it and I want to get the most enjoyment out of it. I've had it a while now and I haven't really done much to it.
I want to get rid of programs that is just taking up space. I want to get the best apps, learn about the phone. Customize it in cool ways.
Should I root it? Am I too much of a noob and or have too good of a phone to even need to worry about it?
Will you guys hold my hand and walk me through this phone or link me to some "lg g2 starter guide" threads to really have fun with this phone?

honestly the phone is fast enough by itself with amazing battery, but if you like to get into flashing things first off
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2449670 this will teach you how to install TWRP. after that just download a rom of your choosing, more than likely the developer already root the rom for you so you dont need to do it. enjoy from there. make sure you know how to enter TWRP the hard button way... for tmobile is hold down and power button, once LG logo flash quickly let go and press the two button again. thats tmobile though.

I'm a bit of noob to the whole custom ROMS thing as well. I was just wondering what is a good program to make a back up before rooting and installing new ROMS?

TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) and CWM (Clockwork Mod) both have backup utilities baked in. The stock full system backup will be quite large. Aside from being a best practice, it's too large to archive on the device, in my opinion. I would recommend offloading it to your PC and learn how to put it back using ADB (Android Debug Bridge) and the TWRP sideload feature in the event of a soft brick condition. Recommend you also backup and save your EFS/IMEI.

Hi. As someone who has very little understanding about this stuff, I'm struggling to get any use out of that guide. Is anyone else finding this?
For example:
"Ok, so if you look in the download page for your device and you are getting a zip file, this is a flashable zip, but it cannot be treated the same as an IMG file in this guide. You need to flash an older one that is a .img file, and then use that to flash the newer zip."
I have no idea how to do what it says in that last sentence, or what it even means.
Then where it starts describing option one, I don't understand what it's telling me to do. What does it mean to "push" the loki patch and the img? Where am I supposed to type that stuff in the code box?
I figured I'd just get my g2 rooted and back it up, then start reading about the stuff I didn't understand. But just getting started seems really complicated, and I'm struggling find the info I need to understand that guide. Is there a more detailed, baby step guide for idiots out there? Or can someone just quickly explain the things I mentioned about that guide?
