Android 2.3 is based on Linux 2.6.35, but Arc is using 2.6.32. Any background story we know? Discuss.
hi
just to correct : this is not linux, only the kerner version .

Well, it's not just linux's Kernel. Android changed a lot the linux kernel and that's why we aren't using the new 3.1 kernel (that's a shame :S).
I don't know why SE is using an outdating kernel but they may have build their drivers with the X10 kernel (or something like this)?
I don't really see the significance of this, there is very little performance related going on in the Linux kernel. Userspace is where it's at now..

I think dev's are on smth about kernel right now, dx's @what has been done in dev [email protected] list is empty, racht is looking busy right now,i think Blagus is helping them too.
There no announcement about it because it still in early alpha, without "noise" devs can smoothly finish their work.
Due the change in 1st message my post is useless, delete it please.
FreeXperia is silently developing one already.
See there Github.
I can't believe FXP is developing Kernels i check it out
Thanks Dedii.
I made custom kernel.sin but now I have to flash stock 2.1 first because something's wrong on 2.3
Or, as FXP said, NAND initialization is incorrect.
BTW, for kernel developers, you have to pack Image, not zImage.
Please stop with off-topic.
I flashed my kernel and it works. However, [email protected] machine name persists.
Anyways, take a look at this:
Code:
<5>[ 0.000000] Linux version 2.6.29 ([email protected]) (gcc version 4.5.2 (Sourcery G++ Lite 2011.03-42) ) #1 PREEMPT Thu Aug 18 16:30:18 CEST 2011
I need to make some more tweaks, pack correct ramdisk and remove [email protected] machine/user name.
Will update tonight or tomorrow

Wow! Thanks a bunch.
@Blagus
I think that the X10 mini and mini pro kernels can work on Android 2.1 and above. Is this NAND initialization problem affecting them as well?
And was there some sort of patch or something that FXP was providing on X10 dev forums with regard to custom kernel compatibility? Just a question .
what's the differents of .ko modules and build in.
please make CPU and GPU overclock
Cpu Oc Ok
Gpu oc ?? Im not sure
hi
sorry if it seems stupid but i happened to experience that oc module in gingercruzt 7.3 is better than normal oc module, it has 60kb of file size and with GC module i can overclock my cpu to 780mhz without any problem, though with normal oc module with 4kb i can only reach 748mhz of oc, if you could please test it and see if it do the same for you guys cuz i think it will be better to use better modules in kernel

Deleted some rants...again
Just a little remind for kernel developers, remember to post your Github( or whatever) source code for GPL compliance when it done.
Thanks.

hi all i unlocked my bootloader and needed to see if i cud use omnius to unlock my phone after. it all went okay untill i switched the phone back off and put other sim into it. thats when the fun thing happend lol . it blocked the signal of my phone so it made me more determind to find a way to have both . so i restored earlyer TA backup and it was sim locked again. then i unlocked it for the second time and then i used msm7227_setool2 to see if i could unlock the bootloader without it blocking signal but to my surprise i was left with a sim unlocked phone by omnius and a unlocked bootloader :d this may not work again but just wanted to share my amazment with you as really it should have signal bricked my phone again but it never and now i got both lol

Hello.
Yesterday I tried to compile MiniCM from source, but I did not succeed.
However I compiled a vanilla Cyanogenmod from source (Github), so if someone here is brave and knows what they are doing they can try it. I use a kernel based on Alfsamsungs sources, and CM boots up and works here.
(no wifi cause my custom kernel, had to overwrite with my own modules to get it working)
I have not tested it much but I think MiniCM is a better choice.
NB: No need to post question or bugs, Im not a developer, I only compiled it.

What did u use to compile it ? Linux mint or ubuntu ? And did you try with nAa11 instead of your own compiled kernel ??

I used Ubuntu 10.04, no did not try with other kernels. But the CM is not for alfs kernel (it has an kernel.sin inside the zip file), so my guess is that it also works with other kernels, like nAn11.

I´m currently using CM10 by Tezet, and I have flashed the GB kernel that Tezet put in his post. It all works nice and well, but I wanted to try Danik's MS2Ginger. Does anybody know if it works well without flashing the custom kernel from Danik? Can I just keep my current kernel? If possible, I'd appreciate the opinion of someone who has tried this.
Thanks in advance!
PS: On a side note, my current kernel (CM10) is named: 2.6.32.9- Jellybean, etc, etc. I had the impression that the Linux Kernel for Gingerbread (that is to say, the GB Kernel) was 2.6.35. Why keep the froyo kernel number?

I think you can keep your kernel but you would really benefit from the new one when using Danik's ROM. I haven't tried his ROM though.
CM10 has a thing called "2nd-boot" which allows us to boot custom kernels, from an already running kernel.
2.6.32.9 is the Linux kernel version (which btw, the number doesn't have anyhing to do with the Android version, but newer Android versions work better with newer kernels, that's why there is a WIP 3.0.8 kernel for the Defy). "Jellybean" is just the branch of code. That kernel has the ramdisk and init binaries (I think, kernel experts please correct me) necessary to boot JB.
Motorola has never actually released a kernel newer than that for the MS2, the "official GB kernel" it's an older kernel "built" for GB.
Hope it helps.
Thanks for answering!
I want to know if there's a 2.6.36 kernel for our device.
I know there is working 2.6.35 which I have built and used on. But I am specifically interested in 2.6.36 or 2.6.37. The reason is I'm tring to add new io schedule and .35 doesn't support row or fias.
I found some 2.6.36 msm7x30 kernels for samsung, but I can't find one for HTC. (even a dhd kernel will be fine.)
Anyone can help me on this?
Btw, I know 4.1 and 4.0 can run on 2.6 kernel. If I want to port a 4.2 rom, how can I make it work on 2.6 instead of a 3.0 kernel?
The rom has to be able to run off of a 2. kernel. I know PAC 15 does.

Hi,
Just a bit of curiosity, Why some android kernel developers still using the linux kernel 3.4.0 (faux, franco, hell's core, matr1x) and others move up into latest linux kernel 3.4.59 (semaphore, ak, purified)? What is the difference if I stay to old one or use an upgraded linux kernel version for my Nexus 4? Thanks for the answers in advance. Please enlighten me,
Best Regards,
Edit: It is told from softpedia that any users who is using any kernel based from 3.4.x branch is urged to upgrade? Does it really necessary to upgrade to 3.4.59 and ignore 3.4.0?
Maybe it is some security fix within that type of kernel.
Even the Paranoid Android Stock kernel uses this version.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4
some devs upgrade the kernel whenever a new version comes out, even though it might not have anything for android. other devs only update their kernels to a new version only when there is something specific to android and your device included. then theres some devs that like people to think that they are ahead of the game by going for the newest kernel version every time, just to make their kernel seem like it better or ahead of the game, even though there arent any advantages to upgrading the kernel version, those devs just like pushing buzzwords.
