Interesting to say the least. Looking forward to checking out their first unique release after the buyout. I'd expect a lot more interaction and compatibility with other Sony products for starters.

Remember the whole PS3 Hacking fiasco? Sony like locking their stuff down, and attack anyone who tries to break it.

Sony couldn't afford to buy Ericsson, the rumours are that Sony would purchase Sony Ericsson aka the Ericsson mobile division.
I've always like Ericsson phones, so this would be a slight disappointment to me, but if Sony can put proper audio processors in their walkman range and better image processing in the cybershot phones and they use nicer materials for their phones then I would continue supporting them.
Imagine a Z Walkman phone?
Source?
@topic: I really like Sony. I have one Xbox, but some further integration with all of their devices (Vaio series, Bravia TV's, cybershot cameras, PS3/PSP/PSVita) would be nice. (would love to see thing related to Arc and PSVita, it would be AMAZING *-*)

Sony nears buying out Ericsson from venture: report
(Reuters) - Sony Corp is nearing a deal to buy out Telefon AB LM Ericsson's stake in their 50:50 smartphone joint venture, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday citing people familiar with the matter.
The joint venture's two parent companies have regularly discussed the nature of Sony Ericsson's ownership structure, according to the report. It said the talks were ongoing and could break apart at anytime.
Ericsson and Sony declined to comment on the reported talks.
"We have a long-term commitment to our joint ventures," said an Ericsson spokesman.
Many analysts say Japan's Sony needs to assert control over Sony Ericsson if the venture is to recoup market share in the cut-throat world of smartphones.
Sony and Ericsson's joint venture, formed in 2001, thrived after its breakthrough with Walkman music phones and Cybershot cameraphones, both of which leveraged Sony's brands.
But it lost out to leaner rivals at the cheaper end of the market, and its share of total handset sales has dropped to below 3 percent from more than 9 percent at its peak.
"A buyout would make a lot of sense for Ericsson as I believe their share in the joint venture is worth to them between zero and minus 1 billion euros ($1.33 billion)," said Bernstein analyst Pierre Ferragu.
"Whatever price they agree on, it would be a positive for Ericsson," he said.
Shares in Sweden's Ericsson gained further on the report and closed 6 percent higher at 69.20 crowns on Thursday.
A full takeover of the venture would boost Sony's overall offering, which includes content, gaming devices, consumer electronics and even tablet computers, but is still missing its own smartphones.
"The buyout allows Sony to move development in-house and better integrate other products like gaming into newer phones," said Steven Nathasingh from U.S. technology research firm Vaxa Inc.
Last month at the IFA trade fair in Berlin Sony Ericsson's phones were presented inside the Sony hall, mixed with Sony's TV sets and new tablets.

Sony Is This Close to Paying $1 Billion for Full Control of Sony Ericsson
Sony sure had itself a day the other day, and rumor has it the tech giant may soon have itself all of the Sony Ericsson joint venture as well.
This according to a rumor reported by industry gaming pub Gamasutra, which reports Sony is oh so close to a $1 billion takeover of the mobile phone partnership that it currently shares a 50/50 deal with devices like the Xperia Play. That device, if you'll recall, bears the PlayStation brand and was 100% marketed to the masses as a game-playing device that happened to make phone calls.
But where would the acquired Sony Ericsson assets go? Again, according to rumor, the bits and pieces would be folded into Sony's PC and gaming wing as part of a streamlining maneuver to save cash and improve operations.
Sony Ericsson Xperia Play owners or otherwise, does this sit well with you? [Gamasutra]
its good for both!!
through this deal Sony can compete better with Samsung/Apple..
If sony can keep the employees who designed the arc ill be happy either way. It's a win win for the consumer

Well, I have mixed feelings about this. Before the merger, Sony was failing miserably in the mobile phone sector. Their phones were just not up to standard. On the other hand, Ericsson was doing pretty well. If I recall the last Ericsson phone was the T68m which was a hit (it was later renamed T68i after the merger). The joint venture, Sony Ericsson, struck gold between 2004-2007 with their Walkman and Cypershot phones. They were very, very late in offering a high end smartphone which came in the form of the X10 in March of 2010 with sub-par software but, great hardware. This was 3 years AFTER the iPhone hit the shelves!
So I am really not sure how Sony will fair if they drop the Ericsson in "Sony Ericsson"?
I think it won't affect so much Ericsson. Or I thinks they shoudn't. If they really buy, they should just add more features to the phones, but keeps the employees from Sony Ericsson. Just a name thing.
Will still be a loyal sony ericsson fan either way. My 1st SE was the t100. It had a blue screen. Lol.

I agree. But, I do not think that they will keep it.
Do yo really think that sony-"we lock everything down and sue you if you unlock it" will continue down the path of helping devs and unlocked bootloaders that SonyEricsson just started walking upon?
I doubt it.
The name? Sony won't buy out Ericsson for anything less than a namechange. They won't pay billions just to keep label the product "SonyEricsson".
I think this is a good step for sony, but a very bad one for android.

Well as for the iPhone it took LOOONG time for ANY company to respond and probably one of the first real success was HTC HD2. As for SE I don't agree, X1 was very impressive, just the legacy was not continued.
SE used to make great smartphones. The whole "P" series was somehow special (i owned p910i and p1i) and the p1i is still my all-time favourite SE. Then they released the first xperia which was a worth replacement for the p1i. It was even better than its main rival at that time the htc touch pro.
but then they decided to f**k it all up and released the x2.. and then the x10..
Now they seem to be on the right track though with the 2011 series.
i just hope that the takeover from Sony wont affect their future smartphones too much
I still have the P910a. That phone is a classic! Has a physical qwerty keyboard, jog dial and touchscreen. The best of all worlds! Also has one of the loudest speakers in the industry. The phone had horrific battery life though and SE's Symbian UI wasn't that good. I had the w600i. Did anyone ever own that phone? Remember the battery door flying out easily? LOL. SE quickly recalled the devices. Tried fixing it then discontinued it. I had the p990i. That was a disaster. Then I went on to own a number of walkman series devices. The best selling w810i which I still have. My fave was the w995a which died on me.
My fave cybershot phone is still the k790a, still have that too. I love the candybar style. I had the C905a. I went through a lot of SE devices. I have the Arc now. I was thinking about getting the X10a just in case the Sony Ericsson
name is no longer. What do you guys think? Am I crazy? Please go easy on your responses. LOL
Whatever happens, I hope Sony Ericsson makes a comeback.

Sony Ericsson to become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony and integrated into Sony's broad platform of network-connected consumer electronics products
The transaction also provides Sony with a broad IP cross-licensing agreement and ownership of five essential patent families
Ericsson to receive EUR 1.05 billion cash payment
Sony and Ericsson to create wireless connectivity initiative to drive connectivity across multiple platforms
Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) and Sony Corporation ("Sony") today announced that Sony will acquire Ericsson's 50 percent stake in Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB ("Sony Ericsson"), making the mobile handset business a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony.

Opinions??
Hoping this to be a great decision.
Lets Wait and Watch...
I hope they don't get rid of the green logo. its cool! Overall I think it is wise decision considering Sony with its potential should have been at least at par with other brands if not above. they make great phones. Delays and poor marketing are the only things that are holding them back.
Here in India, (where SE became no.2 for a brief period of time) nobody has heard of the phone Xperia arc. Whereas Galaxy phones hoardings and adverts are all over!
Now few patent licenses coming directly under their thumb may speed things up. Also we might see better integration of Sony's multimedia and gaming with the mobile business.
All the best Sony!
Just hoping to have even better Xperias.........

I don't think it will affect the phone because most probably they will keep the employees and designers so they will still produce the same quality phones. They might redesign the logo most companies does that to spread the word
i hope that our Xperia phones will be still supported from Sony :S
And now what about ICS 4.0 ?
Will Sony release it or does they change the Ideas on how and what to Update ?
I am very skeptical about this. There was a reason why both companies joined forces in 2001. Sony SUCKED at making mobile phones!! And Ericsson was not doing too well either.

in the post below it seems as sony is saying that it wont be making anymore phones
Sony president and CEO Sir Howard Stringer has just addressed the media on the proposed buyout and confirmed that the company will indeed move away from feature phones, as previously stated. This effectively heralds the death of the Walkman line and the dawn of Sony's exclusively Android era, though Stringer's not ruling out the possibility of bringing another OS on board. When asked whether his firm would consider buying webOS, the exec said simply, "Never say never."

It's been 10 years I'm faithful with Sony Ericsson for the reliable and the highly-configurable phones they released. (Got a T300, a V800, a T707 and now an Arc).
I hope Sony will be able to walk their steps and will continue to release such good phones.
You'll probably find most of the Ericsson antipathy comes from previous x10 owners, due to the length of time it took se listen to us about its shortfalls, and how to improve them. They were good at feature phones, though...
sinkster©
but thanks to SONY ERICSSON without that theres no thing like xperia series
back to sony
yeah, now I'm back to Sony
I had the Sony CMD-Z1 and Z5.
The Z5 had "fullblown" web browser - Microsoft Mobile Explorer 2.0
edit: version 2.0 not 1.0
I've always wanted the CMD-Z1. It was one of the nicest phones in its time but I don't think it was even capable of working in Canada at the time.
I've been a long Sony Ericsson user since the first T68 series phones.. now those phones were truly ahead of its time and started a lot of trends that we see in phones today.
The phone supported tethering via bluetooth and infrared. I walked around thinking I was king with my unlimited data plan with Rogers with my phone in my pocket and my Sony NZ90 clie wirelessly tethering internet from it.
the phone featured accessories like a digital camera, torch light, laser pointer adapters, full qwerty keyboard adapters, and even RC cars (via bluetooth) which was the coolest thing at the time but marketing was so terrible (at least in Canada) that nobody knew about the features in these phones. it was the first color screen phone released with user-selectable color themes & wallpapers and play games wirelessly with other T68 users.
While I think the T68 phone was one of the first phones Sony Ericsson has ever made as a joint venture, it was probably the best phone ever made. period. iirc, Sony claimed that they would partner up with Ericsson since both parties were facing losses in the telecommunications industry and Sony would gain total ownership after 10 years. So here we are 10 years later and it's amazing how quickly the mobile telecommunications industry grew during that time.
is their some one who use this already? what do you think guys flashtool still we can use it??

Yeah, me too. A shame that they are not planing it just yet.
If it wasn't for the release price of the Xperia Play, I think that more people would have bought it. At least here, in Portugal.
It's still too early to be announcing the Xperia Play 2 cause the Vita was released a few months ago.
I bet SE were thinking, "How great are we, a part of a gamepad that is sort of a touchscreen, not buttons? Aren't we clever and innovative?"

Bcz XP is successfully as a play phone, but for help much to expend the PlayStation @ Android market.

It's easy to understand: if the Playstation Certified brand becomes a success then maybe we'll see a Xperia Play 2.
I don't get why Sony tries to piss off so much the XPlay owners/commmunity. Instead of continuously giving out bad news for the device, they should try to reconcile with us by giving something else in change.
Although Sony is a nice company with great ideas, concepts and products, they seem to fail at this matter. I am still waiting for a good update for XPlay with many new additions.
It won't be an Xperia Play 2. It'll be a "Playstation Phone"
It won't be either, Sony wanted to kill the play ever since they found out someone bought one instead of a vita.
Sent from my R800i using xda premium
Whatever they do, a phone with Vita OS won't stand a chance.
First, majority of people need their phone to be dependable and secure, and NOT be a "plaything". An OS that evolved around a game console simply won't be treated seriously by consumers.
Second, Apps from all the major players are required such as google map, gmail, facebook, twitter, flash player, whatsapp, youtube, dropbox, etc... needless to say there's always arm-twisting between these, and other companies, to prevent any new OS from succeeding.
Without a serious image and support from these companies, a phone running on such an OS won't hit a critical mass required to attract app/content developers, and it will flop even harder than Xperia PLAY.
At this time, the next Xperia Play's best OS choice is still Android. But even then, I think Sony really dislike the idea of Playstation ecosystem sitting on top of Android. They may think it changes too fast, too many different hardware, or difficult to control piracy.
So even the best choice is not appealing. So I think Sony won't be putting Playstation content on Smartphones for years yet. And that's a shame because It think that's exactly what we all want happening now.
If you haven't heard, Sony and HTC are now partners with regards to PlayStation Certified devices, domains that's where the next Xperia PLAY will come from, although I haven't seen a flip or slide phone from HTC that sold well since the mytouch 4g. All I can say is that the next series of android phones will be very interesting to see, and only then can we truly discover where the xperia play will go.

I'm seriously hoping HTC produces a phone with a gamepad. I've had a thing against sony for a long time (going back to before PS3 launched, but its gotten ever worse ever since). I was seriously biting the bullet to get this phone for its gamepad functionality. I've always wanted an HTC phone, and if they manage to come out with a game phone with decent specs, I'll be all over it. Anything to shoot sony the bird.
If they gave the xperia play higher specs and made it more future proof then they would be seeing them starting to fly out now. Ironic at e3 they were saying they only put out the best.
This xperia play belongs in 2010
