Interesting to say the least. Looking forward to checking out their first unique release after the buyout. I'd expect a lot more interaction and compatibility with other Sony products for starters.
Am I the only one who's a bit worried?
Remember the whole PS3 Hacking fiasco? Sony like locking their stuff down, and attack anyone who tries to break it.

Sony couldn't afford to buy Ericsson, the rumours are that Sony would purchase Sony Ericsson aka the Ericsson mobile division.
I've always like Ericsson phones, so this would be a slight disappointment to me, but if Sony can put proper audio processors in their walkman range and better image processing in the cybershot phones and they use nicer materials for their phones then I would continue supporting them.
Imagine a Z Walkman phone?
Source?
@topic: I really like Sony. I have one Xbox, but some further integration with all of their devices (Vaio series, Bravia TV's, cybershot cameras, PS3/PSP/PSVita) would be nice. (would love to see thing related to Arc and PSVita, it would be AMAZING *-*)

HTC has the upper hand since they started first with Android, "HTC Magic G1", so I think they are more experienced than Sony Ericsson, but with time I'm sure SE will catch up hopefully
And you can't stop people from complaining, some complain about 2.4 already
I'll pick Arc for sure. The design is way better than any other competitors. Looking into the released vedio of Arc, the software development capability of SE can be trusted. I think they just need some very little time to catch up.
Sony Ericssons new software design makes sure there is as little 'critical' integration as possible, so they can release updates to the OS or their own apps without having to worry too much about other things breaking. Also, developer Arcs running 2.4 have been spotted, so even while the Arc -and- 2.4 aren't out yet, SE is already working on it.
I personally also think Google really likes Sony Ericsson. Sony Ericsson is one of the few companies that decided not to release any phones with Windows Phone 7. Samsung and HTC both are also targeting Windows Phone 7 markets. Because of SE's focus on Android, I think they realize they have to do their absolute best now, and I also think Google is slightly favoring them when it comes to developing for the latest version of Android.

I remember reading a while back google approached SE to design their nexus phone and SE was not interested.
Imagine if SE's Arc is actually Nexus S? I think it would have been more successful than the ugly design done by Samsung.

I don't even think they tried, to be honest. Sony Ericsson has always tried to differentiate with their very own style of software. Every Sony Ericsson-device ever released has a very distinct Sony Ericsson-feel, if you know what I mean. With a Nexus phone they'd have to completely drop all software changes and just provide the hardware. They couldn't add some Walkman or Cybershot stuff, no BRAVIA engine, nothing, since it'd all have to be stock Android. And that is something Sony Ericsson just doesn't even want to do. (It's also why they ditched Windows Phone 7)
Atrix, of course
Imo : None of them.
If you got a 1ghz Smartphone atm, dont change it.
Why ?
1)Arc has also a 1ghz CPU like the others, yes it will be a bit faster but nothing from the other world.
2)SGS2 and Atrix sound very sexy but they are very expensive.
3)Quad-core Tables coming into August, and mobiles phones a bit later. So you'll gonna have to refresh phone again in 4-6 months =p
I am sticking to the X10 for now,im gonna skip the "Dual-Cores" and wait directly for the quads if i buy a new phone...besides...a mobile phone with quad-core cpu's....where the hell are we going?. Im seeing a Mobile Phones crisis coming...people are not gonna be able to keep up buying phones one after another if they are outdated in less than 5 months...jeesus...
That said, the SGS2 has more than double the power of the Arc,so that tells it all.
Respect.

No Sony will open the pandoras box... they will defend their own stuff. Lock the Bootloader for sure, and introduce encryption. Why?
We all know that Sony for years didn't give to its child SE one thing... Playstation Sources... nobody in the world can emulate PS2/PSP as good as their own creator... we all know that theoretically wise todays phones are PS2 capable if PSP Vita is PS3 graphics capable at the moment... imagine, if your stock Android could run all PSP/PS2 legacy just with proper efficient recompiler? SE experimented with Xperia Play and stepped on Sony's foot, and seems Sony didn't like it, as it can ruin their business with PSP line(inner competition).
Style? Yeah for sure... it was and it will be... SONY has the best design by default... nobody can touch them in that department...

You're spouting a lot of rumor and opinion as truth.
From what I hear ericsson was the dead weight in that relationship, holding up development and making poor choices.
I think we will in the end see this as a very positive move.
I really think Sony knows better than to bury themselves like you are implying.
Soon, someone is going to make a misinformed post about the whole Sony/PS3/GeoHot thing and how that relates to this situation...
EDIT:
Which it doesn't, of course.
U know no means to connect PS3 to android its completely different sony made PS3 and its firmware and they want to sell games and keep away piracy from PS3 to earn money...
In android I think its a rule to atleast release the kernel sources...
And they don't want to loose money they are here to earn money and they see every means and techniques to earn money and they will definitely not lock their devices down to loose their money by losing their costumers...
The prices I think will definitely raise

I think they will improve their product as they can in order to compete in the market. And Sony's software policy is the same on each platform. Android is not an excuse.
And... We are not objective mates... we are just a bunch of geeks, and mere customers doesn't care about locked/unlocked bootloaders. We are nothing more than a mere minority of the market... definitely not the one on whom money could be made!(except of the habit bricking phones)
No matter what Ericsson is dead again... it is the second time Although its original Semiconductor part is doing great... its next gen CPU is present even on Chinas HTC Sensation(Due TD-SCDMA) and new NovaTHOR platform sounds very good, so we wont forget the name so soon.
The Biggest looser in the market is that old rubber boot maker... SE because the plain redesign using faster CPU, minimized the costs for R/D and etc development to establish new generation of phones for fall season... instead of NOKIA throwing out endless rubbish...

This effectively heralds the death of the Walkman line and the dawn of Sony's exclusively Android era, though Stringer's not ruling out the possibility of bringing another OS on board. Not really . Because it will never compete with kind of experience that you get with the Vita. I'm satisfied with my Xplay because all I really need is emulator games and ocasional android fun titles.
Throwing an Xplay 2 would mean that they actually care about our gaming needs. Let's face it, all the other phones, whatever their hardware might be(quad, octo cores) they will never rival a phone playstation controls or physical controls for that matter. The way I see it, they should try to reduce the bulkiness and make the slider system more like the ones we see on the Nokia's(much more sturdy).
If you make it slimmer, port in some God of War games, make it more sturdy(a gaming device needs that) then people will BUY
Atlas was not a God
The next Xplay 2 will be named Hercules

As much as I don't believe there is any Xperia Play 2 in the works, I am sure some of you will remember the buzz that preceded the release of PSP GO.
"What? Why would Sony release such a thing? A new PSP a with slide-out gampead and ONLY flash memory and no UMD slot??? They will never do such a thing."
And then - BANG! A video was released on YouTube with PSP GO, even before Sony officially announced the thing. Came as a shock to many, myself included.
Saying that, I still don't believe they have any kind of a new Xperia Play in their plans. The market is in a different situation now from then.

Where did they confirm this? All I've seen them say is that they are focused on bringing the playstation experience to other phones in the lineup. They are focusing on the ps certified experience. If anything, this guarantees a successor to the play. It may not be something they are prepared to talk about now (hence denying all rumors to the contrary), but mark my words, it's going to happen.

I agree.. When you think of "Heavy Hitters" in the industry, Sony doesn't rank up there. At least not in the US.
Maybe it was the taboo of being once associated with Ericsson and Ericsson's shoddy equipment back in ATTWS's TDMA days.
