I doubt they will do that with android.
They will follow suit to compete.
Now they might release phones that are extremely stylish AND offer competitive specs, the latter something they have truly been behind on.

No Sony will open the pandoras box... they will defend their own stuff. Lock the Bootloader for sure, and introduce encryption. Why?
We all know that Sony for years didn't give to its child SE one thing... Playstation Sources... nobody in the world can emulate PS2/PSP as good as their own creator... we all know that theoretically wise todays phones are PS2 capable if PSP Vita is PS3 graphics capable at the moment... imagine, if your stock Android could run all PSP/PS2 legacy just with proper efficient recompiler? SE experimented with Xperia Play and stepped on Sony's foot, and seems Sony didn't like it, as it can ruin their business with PSP line(inner competition).
Style? Yeah for sure... it was and it will be... SONY has the best design by default... nobody can touch them in that department...

You're spouting a lot of rumor and opinion as truth.
From what I hear ericsson was the dead weight in that relationship, holding up development and making poor choices.
I think we will in the end see this as a very positive move.
I really think Sony knows better than to bury themselves like you are implying.
Soon, someone is going to make a misinformed post about the whole Sony/PS3/GeoHot thing and how that relates to this situation...
EDIT:
Which it doesn't, of course.
U know no means to connect PS3 to android its completely different sony made PS3 and its firmware and they want to sell games and keep away piracy from PS3 to earn money...
In android I think its a rule to atleast release the kernel sources...
And they don't want to loose money they are here to earn money and they see every means and techniques to earn money and they will definitely not lock their devices down to loose their money by losing their costumers...
The prices I think will definitely raise

I think they will improve their product as they can in order to compete in the market. And Sony's software policy is the same on each platform. Android is not an excuse.
And... We are not objective mates... we are just a bunch of geeks, and mere customers doesn't care about locked/unlocked bootloaders. We are nothing more than a mere minority of the market... definitely not the one on whom money could be made!(except of the habit bricking phones)
No matter what Ericsson is dead again... it is the second time Although its original Semiconductor part is doing great... its next gen CPU is present even on Chinas HTC Sensation(Due TD-SCDMA) and new NovaTHOR platform sounds very good, so we wont forget the name so soon.
The Biggest looser in the market is that old rubber boot maker... SE because the plain redesign using faster CPU, minimized the costs for R/D and etc development to establish new generation of phones for fall season... instead of NOKIA throwing out endless rubbish...

Does Samsung has also a policy for selling cheaper phones to poor countries and Asia? That explains why the cost is so different on ebay... they are just gray market phones...? And SGS2 is popular and it keeps the price high...

However, I am getting tired of all this whining about how Sony will destroy SE's legacy. Sony and Ericsson both helped in the JV, they also could have given more. We will never know cause we don't work for them. but one thing is for sure though, IT'S NO CERTAINTY THAT SONY WILL DESTROY THIS LEGACY. Of course I'm not saying they might or might not, but jeez people, don't write them off without giving them any chance. see what they have to offer then whine. sheesh.

I'm not denying this is bad, but I hardly think se is "trustworthy" with their amazing support track record... Lol
Oh we just put out a phone two months ago and we don't feel like updating it any more, so we won't!
I dont think thats the problem.
I think if HTC can do it somebody else can read out the phone's also.
Like passwords en other information.
There is a service on the phone where if you lose your phone you can remote locate it and wipe it.
I'd say these "apps" have something to do with that.
That's not what this app is for, it's specifically for HTC to get log information, probably for either remote support of their devices or when people send them to service centres. The problem with this is that they have left the whole interface totally open to any person or app that fancies having a look and gathering user data which probably will be sensitive.
Not at least securing it with basic authentication is just plain stupid. Although it would have to be more advanced than a simple user/pass.
Surprised that they haven't been taken to court on data protection issues. Although I wouldn't be surprised to see that coming fairly soon.
All they needed to do, would be to secure this app properly and encrypt the data its logging and they woulld be safe.
Sounds to me like the htc developers were told to implement it and had a very short turnaround to get it into the latest release. Hoping once again for obscurity, which in an open source project is daft!

whatever you want to think, i'm not a hater, i'm just not a fanboy either.
I have owned many brands of phones, but I felt the worst treatment from se.
Just my opinion, you're entitled to you're own as well. No need to get personal..
I do agree on some points with scooby, they have had a long history of sell it and forget it. But, they do seem to finally be realising that having great and stylish devices (even if the hardware has been a little okish instead of groundbreaking recently) isn't enough and they need to keep devices up to date and to engage with their customers.
You can tell they are changing with the single biggest thing they have done recently and supporting the FXP team with the tools to get full functions from their devices.
I know that doesn't help with us who have older devices, but by supporting FXP they are indirectly supporting the "other" 2010 models just in effect outsourcing the upkeep and ongoing development to the community who will support the devices until they are not in such widespread use.

why personal? because I said you're a SE hater? you mean you aren't? I don't want to get personal or offend you, I just stated what I observed from reading your posts after you switched from X10, I bet you liked your X10 when you had it but know that you're moved to a better phone no need to use every single opportunity to bash SE & X10, Every time anyone says anything good about X10 you jump in with your "yeah, right, lol" attitude & try to make fun & bash SE & X10, I'm not a fanboy nor do I think it's the best phone out there & you have the right to express your opinion but you're trying hard to convince everyone here that SE & X10 is ****, Well I think most of us don't agree that it's **** & terrible & most of us know about its problems but like the phone & don't feel really good about just pointing out its cons over & over again
as for companies well imo none of them are really trustworthy, they're doing business & do it for money, None of them are charity or anything, so better to just judge them base on what they do & not why they do it

Sony couldn't afford to buy Ericsson, the rumours are that Sony would purchase Sony Ericsson aka the Ericsson mobile division.
I've always like Ericsson phones, so this would be a slight disappointment to me, but if Sony can put proper audio processors in their walkman range and better image processing in the cybershot phones and they use nicer materials for their phones then I would continue supporting them.
Imagine a Z Walkman phone?

@topic: I really like Sony. I have one Xbox, but some further integration with all of their devices (Vaio series, Bravia TV's, cybershot cameras, PS3/PSP/PSVita) would be nice. (would love to see thing related to Arc and PSVita, it would be AMAZING *-*)

Unless you have an r800x then, like me sadly, you need sony to release some kernel sources for your device, which may never happen, so in some way I agree with you because Im sure a dev in this community will figure the lil ol' r800x out sooner or later

But at the same time Im enjoying the challenge of my r800x, it will be defeated!

"Update: Sony president and CEO Sir Howard Stringer has just addressed the media on the proposed buyout and confirmed that the company will indeed move away from feature phones, as previously stated. This effectively heralds the death of the Walkman line and the dawn of Sony's exclusively Android era, though Stringer's not ruling out the possibility of bringing another OS on board. Not really . Because it will never compete with kind of experience that you get with the Vita. I'm satisfied with my Xplay because all I really need is emulator games and ocasional android fun titles.
Throwing an Xplay 2 would mean that they actually care about our gaming needs. Let's face it, all the other phones, whatever their hardware might be(quad, octo cores) they will never rival a phone playstation controls or physical controls for that matter. The way I see it, they should try to reduce the bulkiness and make the slider system more like the ones we see on the Nokia's(much more sturdy).
If you make it slimmer, port in some God of War games, make it more sturdy(a gaming device needs that) then people will BUY
Atlas was not a God
The next Xplay 2 will be named Hercules
xperia play 2 = pseidon

As much as I don't believe there is any Xperia Play 2 in the works, I am sure some of you will remember the buzz that preceded the release of PSP GO.
"What? Why would Sony release such a thing? A new PSP a with slide-out gampead and ONLY flash memory and no UMD slot??? They will never do such a thing."
And then - BANG! A video was released on YouTube with PSP GO, even before Sony officially announced the thing. Came as a shock to many, myself included.
Saying that, I still don't believe they have any kind of a new Xperia Play in their plans. The market is in a different situation now from then.
Xperia Play S/HD = DreamOn
Why does everyone keep on dreaming that there will be an XPLAY 2?

I feel your pain, but Sony confirmed there are no plans for a successor.

F**K YOU SONY whatever business is business
I sincerely don't belive in these types of rumours, similarities and so on. If it's official, ok, if it's the Sun that will surely kill us in 5 billion years and we must stay in our homes starting form now (speaking about the "Atlas" rumour), it's nonsense.

Where did they confirm this? All I've seen them say is that they are focused on bringing the playstation experience to other phones in the lineup. They are focusing on the ps certified experience. If anything, this guarantees a successor to the play. It may not be something they are prepared to talk about now (hence denying all rumors to the contrary), but mark my words, it's going to happen.

Sony announced a partnership with HTC to continue making PS certified handsets. Also PS Suite is getting renamed to PS Mobile.

We'll see if HTC picks up the xperia plays torch.

It's just sad to see a company this lost, they don't even know how to stand up on their own, and they have never knew.
And this time I bet that they are going to fail even more with the PS-certification-idea and the concept of a smart-phone with gaming performance.
Perhaps we will maybe see the same shell of the Xperia Play but with the other equipment that the Sony-engineers had with the HDMI-output or MHL-capable USB, but it depends on how lost Sony feel I believe.
And one thing I know for sure is that, even if it stands HTC on the device, I won't buy it and let Sony make a profit out of me again, hope they just don't spread their dirt to HTC.
And may I ask for the source so I can read some more around the news perhaps?
Thanks in advance.
Friendly regards RazerBlader
I should have never switched from HTC to Sony Ericson at the first place.
Damn. Gamepad.
But, seriously I hope HTC decides to release a phone with a dedicated gamepad with this shiny new PS certificate.

I like how there was no mention of the Play when they talk about bringing gaming to Android. It's like the shameful bastard child that lives in the attic . If you watch the conference, the HTC announcement pretty much kills any possibility of a Play2 so now we can finally lay those to rest.

I don't see it happening. They released the phone+gamepad and it didn't go so well. It doesn't seem cost effective anymore to add a gamepad which we know has issues with ICS. HTC will probably keep the handset thin and lightweight using on-screen controls.

oh sony
you should be hones from firs and tell us that you can't support your products ...
i wish samsung or HTc had game expedience like sony , i'm sure they support was better than sony-liar
I highly doubt Sony will allow HTC to create a phone with a dedicated game pad. I believe they will want to keep that idea in house, the playstation certification is just allowing ps store and ps pocket for their new devices, similar to the Xperia s
Not that it matters, everything announced from last years e3 concerning phones turned out to be vapourware
I have never cared for HTC or its sense UI. I realize there are probably more fans of HTC's sense UI then any other UI overlay. That aside I would love it if every manufacturer made at least 1 phone a year with stock vanilla android. And a for HTC with the Play mobile. I dont see them making a gamepad phone anytime soon. Remember HTC announce some months ago that people preferred thin phones over phones with big batteries. Personally I like the slight chubbiness of the PLAY, yeah its thicker then most phones but then with the gamepad I think its just right. So I really do not see a gamepad+phone from HTC if they are sticking to the "thin is in" routine.
What will happen to our beloved Xperia Play ?

THIS gamepad has issues with ICS, and the original programming and setup of the phone. Doesn't mean it can't be done with a new pad designed for ICS from the ground up.
Not holding my breath though

Will continue to kick ass! HTC with PlayStation is like the NXT Xperia phones. PlayStation experiences on non-PlayStation devices.

Sony has already resigned it to the dustbin. In hindsight, it was foolish to believe that Sony could make a device which was equally good at gaming and being a smartphone.
I'm going to keep the PLAY as a decent handheld emulator and buy a phone which sole purpose is to be a great smartphone (HTC One X?).

At around 1:44 in that clip you can hear how he says "and we are going to leave that feature", so don't dream to much about something more like this.
But then I see more why they change their name from PS suite to PS Mobile so that it will fit in even more into their new thinking, and as a positive effect to see them deliver this PS pocket for every brand is that they don't have to develop everything on their own.
And you can practically say that they are giving away their own trademark (Playstation) for free (with a cost for the certification of course) and throw it like a bone at the community so they maybe get some development for free(?)
And get their trademark even more respectable, and perhaps you will see more real game-pads in the future, but not from Sony themselves perhaps, at least as I somehow manage to turn the facts around xP
And (the last and ) if it someday comes out an HTC with a real physical game-pad, PS certificate and real potential hardware added to the receipt, then I wouldn't doubt to get it since HTC seems to be more aware of how they wanna delight their customers with development and updates, so maybe that could be Sonys rescue in the long race, to let every other manufacturer have a taste of the Playstation-trademark in their devices
