No ICS for Atrix? Very very disappointed, glad we have some CM devs here, can't wait for CM9.
Thats straight from moto. And why i started my other thread asking people to get on motos facebook and twitter and tell them how unhappy we will be if the abandon the atrix. So come on people get our device added to the list. Post on motos. Facebook wall. And ask everyone you know too as well
I think they are aware of our upcoming cm support so they just won't bother at this point. Doesn't really matter though because cm is infinitely better than moto's garbage.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
interesting that they left out even the Atrix 2
At first I thought the reason only bionic XOOM and razr would be supported is because of omap design, but then I remembered that the XOOM is a Tegra 2 soc. So basically they're just abandoning support for the ATRIX.

But we can change that flood the facebook wallnon stop tell themyou wont be buying another moto device
I love how they only mentioned devices on Verizon. Just shows how much Motorola plays favorites with the DROID line.
wow......well with all the new devices coming out, still no official release of CM7, and the atrix not gettin ICS, doesn't look good at all.......i'm still keeping mine though.....but my next device may be the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE
Dont give up post that your not a happy customer here and spread the word for othes to do the same. Lol i feel like im on a one man crusade but if people came togther on here we have the numbers. too change motos mind. http://www.facebook.com/motorola?sk=wall&filter=1

ive seen many threads along these lines for many devices,
OP is definitally right, as customers we have power over motorola. if they dont want to give us ICS we make a point of that, thhehy want our business and this is a great way to get it
so let the flood begin to keep our powerhouse device on moto's list
Haha most likely atrix 2 and atrix wont be on that list. Only new devices. See what there doing trying too more money out of us. So if u want ics people time for a new device
Im not buying any more electronic devices AT ALL!!! Not limited to Motorola only!!!
Haha thats fine. I just think we have an opportunity to make the manufacturer listen too its customes for once. Sammy did a majod turn around and now they are prob the best companie too buy a device from. But it took time and alot of pissed off customers to change there customer relations. Such as communication with the customer and more root friendly
when i got the atrix 4g, i got it becasuse i thought that it would be supported longer because of its superior hardware specs.
next time i buy a phone i will heavily take into account the dev community behind it. manufacturers cant be relied on.
I find it hard to believe that support for the device is dropped within 8 months of launch. I understood that support for devices would continue for at least one year when there is a new update available well within that year.
I'll remain optimistic that the press release does not say they WON'T provide ICS. It lists devices they are currently "Planning" to support with no mention of Atrix 2 anywhere.

You also generally don't see a direct successor to a product only 8 months after launch as well.

Hallo! i have heard allot of rumours that legend won't be getting froyo
is it true?
like you said they are rumours.
just wait. think there will soon be more info from htc when the first 2.2 phones are released.
the rumours are indeed very iffy
I honestly just posted an entire rant last night about this, allow me to quote myself...
kylecore said:
Well I've heard multiple times before this that customer service reps from htc have also confirmed the update to froyo for the legend. The most recent being an email from a customer service rep stating that the user fear not about his flash playing troubles because android 2.2 and incidentally flash 10.1 would be released for the htc legend within the next 2 weeks.
Follow this up by the recent release of flash 10.1 for android 2.2 and the release of the android 2.2 source code being released today the statement of "within the next 2 weeks" seem to be exactly what is happening. Not only is android 2.2 pretty much here but will be available sooner rather then later. To add further flame to the fire htc repeatedly said android 2.2 will be supported by almost all 2010 devices and with the desire being more widely available and more powerful it is more likely to be put in with definite android 2.2 compatible even though the desire and legend get almost always get updates at the same time.
The most likely reason the statement was pulled? Well it must simply be due to google not publishing the source code yet, thus letting people essentially know froyo is ready.
Htc most certainly can't pull the plug on 2.2 before google itself does. But! Now that it has published final froyo source code it is 99.9% done and is most likely waiting to be uploaded to the server.
My uneducated guess is that we'll see froyo on the legend by mid july at the latest.
Also not sure if anyone thought of this, but bell (and indirectly virgin mobile canada) are not stupid companies. They are introducing a new android phone and thus throwing massive amounts of ad $ and marketing into it, from both bell/virgin AND htc itself. Remember this is virgins FIRST android set and bells 4th or 5th, they would most likely have talked to htc to make sure the device is upgradeable to the newest android. They just started selling it, they aren't going to allow it to be out dated within the month its released! If the did it would be a waste on advertising and a waste of introducing a new phone.
That's just my 2 cents, but it seems very logical to me, how about you?

Soo yeah that's my 2 cents, but it seems reasonable if you ask me.
Aaaand lastly, there's a guy currently working on porting froyo over and you can follow it at this thread in the forum, here's the link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=709078

Adobe didn't state HTC Legend on their supported devices list...could this mean no 2.2 for Legend? or Is HTC dumbing down 2.2 for Legend as they did with 2.1?

Motorola Atrix Gingerbread Android 2.3.3
Motorola launched the Atrix 4G back in February on the 22nd with Android 2.2 Froyo on-board. Since then, the Atrix has seen two over-the-air updates bringing much needed features like increased battery life and HSUPA capabilities. One update per two months seems to be the pace for Moto and AT&T on this device. Seems like Atrix users should be due for another update pretty soon, don’t it? We’ve got you covered.
AT&T and Motorola plan to launch Android 2.3 Gingerbread for the Motorola Atrix 4G within the months of June or July. The initial build will likely be Android 2.3.3 with an update to Android 2.3.4 following soon after. The Atrix 4G launched with software version 1.2.6, moved to 1.5.7, and landed on 1.8.3. But, this next update will bring most likely bring users to build number 4.5.XX.
Of course, Motorola’s packed some major features into this update including, but not limited to: overscroll glow, an updated version of Blur, application grouping, re-built main applications, downloads management, an improved camera, better power management, a re-done keyboard, and some nifty animation work. The device’s new version of Blur looks a lot like the Droid X’s recently obtained update.
Due to AT&T’s new policy regarding application sideloading, the “Unknown Sources” checkbox is present and working on the latest Android 2.3.3 builds for the Atrix. That means you’ll be able to sideload without rooting your Atrix. Of course, there are still reasons to root the Atrix. Especially once the bootloader bypass method finally comes to fruition.
We’ve extensively and exhaustively reviewed the Atrix Gingerbread build below for your viewing pleasure. Make sure to check out the pictures as well as the video content after the break!

ahh yes the Android update ETA game. I remember when everyone was waiting for the HTC Hero to go from 1.6 to 2.1 for about 6 months or more after they announced that it would be getting an update.....
But at least this has been officially/unofficially announced which is good news period.
They should be coming out with it soon because most of the dual cores that are coming out and even single core ones have GB already. Like the HTC Sensation 4G that's coming out this month. Its not going to be good for them and HTC says there going to have there boot loader unlocked. If the don't come out with GB in that time frame I'm going to sell my phone and buy from some other company!
Yes ! Very more nice than old motoblur !
I don't know too much about Moto's speed of giving the releases, but I do know that Motorola liberated Android 2.1 way before $ony did the same to my X10
If you are currently rooted and have GingerBlur version 4 on the Atrix, how do you go on about installing/updating Atrix Gingerbread 2.3.3 when it comes out? Do we have to go back to the moto stock rom and then update?

If you are on GBlur, you will have to sbf to do any update. Remember, there is a Moto check before the update will install. But right now we have no procedure for installing Gingerbread because the community doesnt have it. Only Moto does. And the dev they gave it to to try and root after removing the Gigerbreak exploit. Which makes total sense.
i told that about the gingerbread update release a month ago, kennethpenn is testing a beta, then after this, he confirmed, idk if you saw his post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1104716 =)
Thx for the reply WiredPirate ..
I'm glad I went with the Atrix over Iphone 4...
I suspect that the release date isn't that far off. We knew roughly when 1.8.3 was going to be out. Though it also wouldn't surprise me if it ends up being pushed back till the beginning of August if they feel they need more time. I would expect things like webtop would be what slows it down.
I am actually optimistic that we will see it sooner rather than later, since other Motorola phones are already getting Gingerbeard updates.
Theres people asking moto on there facebook page if the atrix 2 will get ics. I also told then the og atrix people want continued support for the og atrix. Heres what they said. Like · Comment · 3 hours ago

Motorola We'll be releasing devices for ICS 6 weeks after Google releases the final version of it
So pretty much same answer too both they have no plans to issue ics updates.just new devices with ics
Unlocked bootloader + Cyanogenmod = continued support. Many of us got this phone because it screamed future proof, and its got more than enough power for ICS. Even if not through Motorola, the Atrix will get Android 4.0.
Maybe no ICS. Maybe yes ICS. Why the f start a new thread?!
Moto knows what there going too do. They have known for awhile why so cell phone companys feel that we do not. Have. The right too know these things. Better communication would be a much happier consumer.
The Atrix is still in GREAT SHAPE!
I've said it before and I'll say it again, people are STILL BRAGGING about their Nexus 1s. How old is that phone?
We have an unlocked bootloader, which will guarantee us some version of ICS (official or not who cares)
IMO the problem started when the Atrix 2 came out. (Which is not even a true Atrix successor)
If the Atrix 2 never gets released, none of these topics would be popping up.
Everything is fine, and there is a TON of life left of the Atrix...

+1 to that.
The only way you'll see ICS is dev support like CM9 IMHO.

After Motorola joined the Android update alliance, they promised to release operating system updates to all its Android devices for 18 months following their release. But for the Xoom2/Xyboard Motorola quietly abandoned its update pledge, they will not provide any more updates for this device. Even though Motorola Xoom2 MZ607 has been on market only 12 months. Common sense?
I feel for all you guys who, like me, are bitterly disappointed by Moto's lack of updates for the Xoom 2, and the seemingly pointless hope that there will ever be custom ROMs for this device.
I purchased my Xoom 2 over a year ago, and had to wait an eternity for the update from HC to ICS. I shouldn't have bothered waiting. I'm not a dev, so I don't know the intricate details of the Android workings....all I can say is that, in my opinion, the stock ROM is utter, utter, monumental rubbish!
My tab is laggy, unstable and generally unpleasant to use on a daily basis. In fact, it's been lying in my bag for about 2 weeks with a flat battery, and I can't even be bothered to charge it.
I now have a complete loathing for anything Moto, and I will never recommend a Moto device to anyone.
I saw some posts some time ago, which said that Moto took an eternity to release ICS because they wanted to make it "stable" and "bug free"....FAIL! It still has problems with the browser randomly closing while mid session, and as mentioned before, it's painfully laggy.
I'm going to try a complete wipe and factory reset to see if I can salvage the £300+ I spent on this POS, but I'm not feeling optimistic.
If anyone has any suggestions, then I would be grateful to hear them.....please don't suggest selling it, I'm seriously debating that now LOL
Good luck guys...and thanks for nothing Moto
The Android Update Alliance was dead on arrival. None of the OEMs stuck to it and no one apparently took it seriously.
Its a real shame that OEMS fail to support products properly and its one of the biggest reasons ill be sticking to Nexus devices in the future.

I think he's talking about from the OEM.
Nexus one was released on Android 2.1 in January of 2010 and upgraded up to 2.3.6 in September 2011 (~21 months).
Nexus S released on 2.3 in December 2010. Its final update was 4.1 in October 2012 (~22 months).
And the Xoom, while not a Nexus, had the GED wifi version released in late March of 2011 on 3.x. It was updated to 4.1 in July 2012 I believe (~18 months).
So across the board, Google has stuck to their minimum of 18 months of updates.

Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jellybean. 18 months was up in October 2012. I'd say we got all that we could, particularly since the Xoom had a really small system partition from the start. Fortunately there are some great developers making 4.2.1 work near flawlessly on the Xoom.
Sent from my Xoom using xda premium
The thing about the Xoom is that each step, from 3.x to 4.0 and 4.0 to 4.1, it saw MAJOR improvements. Honeycomb was just genuinely bad, no surprise there as it was essentially a closed beta. ICS unified 2.3 and 3.x. For users that went straight from 2.3 to 4.0 (i.e. most phones that upgraded), they didn't really see a very large performance upgrade. But for users on 3.x like us, it was HUGE. I remember when it came out. It gave the tablet new life. Conversely I remember a lot of phone users being irritated by it because of the huge UI change (and very little, if any perceivable performance upgrade, as 2.3 was already a reasonably stable OS).
And then 4.1 introduced project butter which improved performance across the board and again, new life in our aging device.
I'd like to say that 24 months should be the standard, but really with how fast hardware improves and with a new Android release roughly twice a year, I can understand the 18 month policy.
It did the Xoom wonders. If you didn't experience it much or don't recall, flash back to a 3.x rom. That **** was just bad. I'm pretty content with my Xoom staying on 4.1 for the foreseeable future.
The LTE Xoom remains a tragedy (though mine is still chugging along) and it is the MAIN reason the Google merger and all of this banter about a Motorola X phone doesn't mean crap to me.
I hold Motorola and Google (and Verizon) responsible for this lie of a tablet. No official Jelly Bean is pathetic. Truly pathetic.

Good luck. Samsung and other OEMs are no better when it comes to updates (except maybe Asus and Acer).
For instance, Samsung abandoned the 2011 galaxy tab 10.1 at Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0).
Updates, updates, updates...it's all you generally hear on these forums. Don't forget the only way anyone makes any money in Androidville is through HARDWARE. If Moto or whoever update Xoom2 to current Android version, how are they gonna sell Xoom3 and Xoom4 and Xoom X or whatever they're going to call it?
Honestly, think about how these people make money and it's a no brainer. I got a Xoom as I knew it was a GED and got WI-Fi as the GSM/CDMA/LTE versions never get updates (historically). But at the end of the day you make the decision to buy the hardware knowing that in 2 yrs the HARDWARE won't be able to keep up anyway and will have to be replaced (Xoom getting bit long in the tooth now but is suprisingly robust IMHO).
If you get updates for all of eternity then what motivation do you have to purchase a new device?
I'm still thinking about getting this phone and wondering how fast Motorola will be with their updates. Being that they are owned by Google, it's kind of baffling to me that it ships with 4.2 instead of 4.3 right about of the box.
And with 4.4 on the horizon, I'm not expecting it to be updated like a Nexus device but hoping they won't drag ass and take forever and a day. This would be my first Motorola device and I've heard about them being terrible with updates in the past but that was before Google bought them out.
Unless someone here can tell the future....
Sent from my XT1058 using Tapatalk 4
Someone with an inside source said that their timetable for releases is 2 months after a new version is released.
Part of the requirements for the purchase of Moto was that they couldn't receive any special treatment when it came to code release from Google. Which means that they don't get the source code for new versions before any other vendor unless they have been chosen to build a nexus device. I that case they can only work on it in connection with the Google Android team.
The two month timetable isn't assume h that has been officially confirmed, so it may not be completely accurate.
Sent from my XT1058 using Tapatalk 2
I've read a few articles which mentioned that although Motorola is now owned by Google, they are in fact keeping a "firewall" between the two companies. This could explain why the Moto X was released with 4.2 instead of 4.3.
Also, based on what I've seen in recent trends, carriers will be releasing Android OS updates over the air as opposed the Motorola (at least here in the States). Some approach OS updates better than others. Verizon is known to take their time releasing updates to phones because of the extensive testing they do with an upcoming update for a particular device. Take for instance the Droid DNA, a device released close to the end of last year which is only now getting the update to 4.2 from 4.1. I sincerely hope the Moto X does not see such neglect when it comes to future updates but I also wouldn't be surprised.
Over the years I have learned one thing. If it's not a nexus, expect the absolute worst case scenario for ROM updates.
with the ability to flash roms coming soon this may not matter

I'd like to believe that Moto offers better support than Samsung and HTC. The 4.3 update is still in the works but hard to put an eta on it as they probably still need time to make sure the moto apps and hardware is optimized to work properly. Other than improved performance and stability, I'm not missing anything by using 4.2.2 for now.
One good thing this phone has going for it is it's pretty much stock Android. No Touchwiz, Sense or any other overlay like Motoblur. This means it should be easier and faster to update since they just have to get the few things working on the next version. I wouldn't be surprised if Motorola skipped 4.3 and went straight to 4.4 since it's close to being released.

This. If it's going to take moto two months, expect longer because it will need to be blessed by the carriers before OTA updates are pushed out.
I wonder where the T Mobile X fits in then... Will it be updated straight from Moto? If not that might be a big problem because T Mobile obviously doesn't even support the phone.

You're right. I actually had a big long post about how once Motorola gets the code, implements their features, at&t still has to test it and approve. Hopefully, since it's basically stock android, it won't take as long because the skinning process doesn't have to happen.

Motorola has a very mixed record so far with their updates. The OG Droid was actually quite good at getting updates in a timely manner and only trailed the Nexus by a few weeks. After Motorola switched to Blur though for all their devices they lagged behind by a few months and even though with Jelly Bean they removed most of the Blur apps in favor of stock, that was still nearly what 9 months after 4.1's source was released before the Razr, Bionic, Droid 4 all got it. In fact for a while there they were one of the slowest at releasing their updates.
Now the Moto X is a new beast though and different from what Motorola has done now so it's hard to say. All the previous devices were part of the "old motorola" and the X is the first device of the "new motorola". The X is almost pure stock so there is very little tweaking that will need to be done. They just need to add in support for their Camera App, Active Display and Touchless Controls, do any kernel updates/bug fixes and then test/resolve any new bugs that popped up in 4.3. Motorola has said that an update is in the works and will come out soon with many improvements for the Moto X. Is this 4.3 or just a newer 4.2.2 build? We don't know.
I'd like to imagine that we will see 4.3 released sometime between now and early October on all carriers considering Samsung announced they will begin to roll out 4.3 to the SGS4, SGS3 and Note2. If Motorola is the first to release a stable, solid build of 4.3 for their new X8 devices and continues to keep up with their updates in a quick and timely manner, it would do a lot to rebuild their name. Right now we just have to wait and see if Motorola is serious about getting better about releasing timely updates or not.

I'm in contact with Punit Soni (Moto X product Manager). He's very active on Google+ and he addressed the update and OTA of 4.3 questions. He said when they officially released the device to distributors, 4.3 just got announced. So it was either delay the Moto X and piss off many pre-ordering customers, or continue with the primary plan and push through with 4.2.2.
He said the update is "Coming soon" as they always say, and he promises many fixes like Camera improvements, Picasa or Google Photos sync for Gallery, and OS 4.3 very soon.
"When will then be now? Soon!"
EDIT: wrong thread.

Part of the requirements for the purchase of Moto was that they couldn't receive any special treatment when it came to code release from Google. Which means that they don't get the source code for new versions before any other vendor unless they have been chosen to build a nexus device. I that case they can only work on it in connection with the Google Android team.

Each OEM gets the source at the same time. Makes no difference. The only reason it takes so long is a mixture between putting loads of framework in. And wanting to get new hardware out.
Moto, working with next to stock android, will be much much faster. No they dont get special treatment per se. But time will be light speed compared to HTC and Samsung

If it goes the way the Tmobile nexus 4 goes than it will be updated right away. My son has the nexus4 bought directly from Tmobile store & it receives updates along with those bought directly from Google. I know its still a nexus and the moto x isn't but from what I understand the Tmobile version of the x doesn't have any carrier installed stuff on it, so hopefully it will be treated as a device like the Google editions.
