Motorola Atrix Gingerbread Android 2.3.3
Motorola launched the Atrix 4G back in February on the 22nd with Android 2.2 Froyo on-board. Since then, the Atrix has seen two over-the-air updates bringing much needed features like increased battery life and HSUPA capabilities. One update per two months seems to be the pace for Moto and AT&T on this device. Seems like Atrix users should be due for another update pretty soon, don’t it? We’ve got you covered.
AT&T and Motorola plan to launch Android 2.3 Gingerbread for the Motorola Atrix 4G within the months of June or July. The initial build will likely be Android 2.3.3 with an update to Android 2.3.4 following soon after. The Atrix 4G launched with software version 1.2.6, moved to 1.5.7, and landed on 1.8.3. But, this next update will bring most likely bring users to build number 4.5.XX.
Of course, Motorola’s packed some major features into this update including, but not limited to: overscroll glow, an updated version of Blur, application grouping, re-built main applications, downloads management, an improved camera, better power management, a re-done keyboard, and some nifty animation work. The device’s new version of Blur looks a lot like the Droid X’s recently obtained update.
Due to AT&T’s new policy regarding application sideloading, the “Unknown Sources” checkbox is present and working on the latest Android 2.3.3 builds for the Atrix. That means you’ll be able to sideload without rooting your Atrix. Of course, there are still reasons to root the Atrix. Especially once the bootloader bypass method finally comes to fruition.
We’ve extensively and exhaustively reviewed the Atrix Gingerbread build below for your viewing pleasure. Make sure to check out the pictures as well as the video content after the break!

So it's coming July 31.
It's my birthday!
Didnt get from him, I got it from there site 2 Can't wait till it comes out! Hope the update gets leaked out! So we have the chance to play with it
Dont get your hopes up for a specific date or month. You will be sad panda if Att anounces (or waits) till Dec or something. June or July is a speculated date passed from ear to ear. You remember that game from grade school? Notice there is no source.

ahh yes the Android update ETA game. I remember when everyone was waiting for the HTC Hero to go from 1.6 to 2.1 for about 6 months or more after they announced that it would be getting an update.....
But at least this has been officially/unofficially announced which is good news period.
They should be coming out with it soon because most of the dual cores that are coming out and even single core ones have GB already. Like the HTC Sensation 4G that's coming out this month. Its not going to be good for them and HTC says there going to have there boot loader unlocked. If the don't come out with GB in that time frame I'm going to sell my phone and buy from some other company!
Yes ! Very more nice than old motoblur !
I don't know too much about Moto's speed of giving the releases, but I do know that Motorola liberated Android 2.1 way before $ony did the same to my X10
If you are currently rooted and have GingerBlur version 4 on the Atrix, how do you go on about installing/updating Atrix Gingerbread 2.3.3 when it comes out? Do we have to go back to the moto stock rom and then update?

Awesome. I have looked at the screenshots. They look great. I have also been playing with a Xoom running 3.1, and these remind me of it.

If you are on GBlur, you will have to sbf to do any update. Remember, there is a Moto check before the update will install. But right now we have no procedure for installing Gingerbread because the community doesnt have it. Only Moto does. And the dev they gave it to to try and root after removing the Gigerbreak exploit. Which makes total sense.
i told that about the gingerbread update release a month ago, kennethpenn is testing a beta, then after this, he confirmed, idk if you saw his post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1104716 =)
Thx for the reply WiredPirate ..
I'm glad I went with the Atrix over Iphone 4...
I suspect that the release date isn't that far off. We knew roughly when 1.8.3 was going to be out. Though it also wouldn't surprise me if it ends up being pushed back till the beginning of August if they feel they need more time. I would expect things like webtop would be what slows it down.
I am actually optimistic that we will see it sooner rather than later, since other Motorola phones are already getting Gingerbeard updates.

Well, I decided to upgrade my POS WinMo Touch Pro 2 and turn to the "Darkside" with Android. My gf has an Android phone, and I can't put it down. After seeing all the free or low cost apps compared to Windows' high dollar, non existent app collection, I had to make the change. I'm waiting for them to start shipping the X's out on the 3rd, so hopefully I'll have mine soon enough. I feel like I'm counting down until Christmas like a 5 year old, although I'm sure some of you have had WinMo before and can understand my anxiousness to have an Android.
First question about the X; are there any updates I should get first thing? I know with WinMo you lose all your apps when you upgrade the firmware so I'd like to get it all done ASAP.
Second; I know it hasn't been announced "officially" yet, but when can I expect 2.2 to be available to the X? I know there are rumors going around, but what is the best guess?
Thanks!
I just got my droid X a couple of days ago and there was an over the air update available. As for froyo 2.2, last thing I read said late august.Hopefully no delays on that.
1. Once you get your DX there should be an OTA update waiting to you like irod87 stated.
2. Froyo (2.2) should be dropping late August early September due to the difference in hardware on the DX, requires more froyo testing by Verizon before releasing.
*Sidenote: once froyo hits, you'll never have to worry about losing your apps, froyo backs up your apps.*

Ok cool, thanks for the heads up.
Have they fixed the "unlock phone" lag? I have heard, and seen it on a store model, that there is a slight jump/delay when you unlock the screen. Does that OTA update resolve that or is that expected in 2.2?
congrats on getting the X, first thing I would do is root the phone, then all the phone begins... There should be an OTA 2.2 update for your new phone sometime in august most likely the 2nd weeks.
I've seen lots of information flying around on Engadget and the like about HTC 2.2 updates forthcoming, but I have yet to see anything at all about the Aria.
Does anyone have any idea if HTC / AT&T intend to update the Aria to 2.2? Of course I know if they don't, we have some guys working hard on unofficial versions. Just would like to know if we'll get anything official...
HTC has stated they're working on it, and they "hope to have it done by christmas" but I wouldn't hold my breath for it to get thru HTC and AT&T for the Aria by then. Last I can remember, the HTC Wildfire was listed as getting the update and the Aria is very similar to said device. I also recall hearing that HTC said all the devices released past a certain point this year (Aria falls within this range) will be getting 2.2. I'm sure the Aria will get it, but again, I wouldn't hold my breath, CM6 will most likely be in full functioning order before official Froyo
Will definitely be trying out CM6 as soon as it gets in a little more working order! Definitely not holding my breath on HTC + AT&T...especially not the AT&T part of that equation.
Nothing official about the Aria, but HTC Evo is getting some official 2.2 Froyo loving tomorrow.
Maybe with that, we can hope for an earlier release for the Aria.
I wont hold my breath, the Motorola Back flip have been out for how long and its still on the launch firmware. ATT will take their sweet time when HTC releases it to them, best chance is that someone here gets their hand on is and bakes a 2.2 with HTC Sense rom for Aria users to flash with.

Considering how the Backflip went, this isn't surprising. Why could a company back a device that isn't doing much on it's own already?
Might be coming sooner than some of you expect. HTC seems to be getting serious about froyo
http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/28/htc-beginning-froyo-rollout-tomorrow-maybe-maybe-not/
http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/29/htc-will-ship-all-android-phones-in-china-with-froyo-on-board-f/
Granted we'll have to deal with att.
I think we will see one, but it will be a pain to install. The phone, for whatever reason, cannot accepted over-the-air (OTA) updates... there's no option in the settings to see if there is an update like most other android phones. HTC has said you will need to use HTC sync to upgrade. (Though I'm sure many of the people here at xda will have no problem loading the ROM via Sync or other ways, for regular users this could be a pain.)
Thought I'd share. I found this bit of info on the htc support forums in the aria section.

Whne there is an update for the Aria-it will have to be loaded from a PC to your device. The good news is that after the first update for the Aria, Firmware Over The Air will be implemented so that any subsequent updates will arrive to your device over the Air once their are released. Currently, there are no updates for the Aria OS-they are in the works.
So it is quite possible we may be getting froyo because she said it's "in the works." One of the other HTC forum moderators said it may take a while because it will be "tested and approved" by att and that we'll need to update it via sync.
So from what I understand, she said after the first update, there will be more updates released OTA. Froyo is gonna be a sync update so when she says any subsequent updates will arrive, does that mean she's hinting we'll be getting updates past froyo? Maybe we'll be able to get 3.0 ;P I mean what other updates will there be? lol
I'd LOVE to get 3.0, but I'll be happy with 2.2.
There is a post at Unwired review (can't post link until my account is verified.. not sure if there is a way to 'request' to be verified), but it's from Unwired Review. Just google "Android 3 Gingerbread."
But then there was an update to the post:
Update: I posted an update to this post, where I address Dan Morrill’s tweet, and do some corrections/clarifications regarding the upcoming Android update number issues, “minimum” specs – thay are actually only “recommended”, and the the split between high end Android 3 – low end Android 2.2 devices – it’s not an official Google policy, but it is happening nonetheless.

So could we get it? Yes. And I think with the speed htc is pushing out the updates, it's not a question for them of "do we update the aria," it's the same question for many of their phones, since so many htc android phones are similiar inside and out.
Froyo for the Aria is something I have been looking forward to for a while now, and seeing it any later than October would be a huge letdown.

US Cellular is launching galaxy S on 10/27 with 2.1. It says Froyo upgrade for this device will happen later this year.
If Samsung upgrades all Galaxy S phones to 2.2 together, we won't see Froyo till 10/27.
http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010/10/06/u-s-cellular-to-offer-samsung-mesmerize-a-galaxy-s-phone/
I think, they will update them in the order they've been released.
For Epic it's mean somewhere in the middle.
still worth waiting.
Simple put, even if 2.2 exists..they are not gonna delay release to upgrade to 2.2..and they most likely won't upgrade the next day...Samsung may make 2.2 available at same time but its up to carriers when to release it with their "customizations"
Froyo will most likely be released this month where most will update at same time but does not mean all...the yae not gonna hold up a world wide release because of a few carriers.
That said since Transform has 2.2 shows that CDMA is not an issue any more so only thing that could cause delay is either 4g or TW3...

The Transform has 2.2? Its only been rumored that the Transform has 2.2, unless you can site me a reference?
Quote from the BGR post about Sprint announcing the Zio, Transform, and the Optimus S
The Samsung Transform will have a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen display (not Super AMOLED), 800 MHz processor, 0.3 megapixel front-facing camera, 3.2 megapixel rear-facing camera with LED-flash, EV-DO Rev. A and Android 2.1. We’re told the device will be upgraded to Android 2.2 shortly after launch. The phone is set to launch on 10/10/10 for $149.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate. We saw the user guide for this device leak yesterday, so no real shock here.

Transform has 2.1 when launched on 10/10. But as SGS, it will be upgradable to Froyo later this year.
CDMA has never been an issue for Froyo. I had Froyo running on Touch for 2-3 months.
What's with samsung and the slowness to get out the latest builds. The moment sat at 1.5 for ages until we finally got 2.1 when 2.2 just start rolling out.

In the first place, the OP makes the common mistake of trying to extrapolate from news about development on some other Galaxy S variant and apply that by weak inductive reasoning to the Sprint Epic 4G.
In the second place, I would be flabbergasted if Froyo is released for the Epic by 10/27, which is only 11 days from now. I have never seen any credible evidence that the Froyo rollout for the Epic platform is scheduled anywhere close to that early. So breathlessly posting "No Froyo upgrade til 10/27!!!" is just laughable all around.

3.0 is suppose to be out next month, might as well just give us that
I feel like I've been waiting for this froyo update forever. I really hope this comes at the end of October.
After that I just need:
- An official lagfix from Samsung, not complaining I think Epic is still super zippy but nice to have
- TouchWiz 3.0, well, hoping the rumors are true that we get this with the froyo update on Epic
- Bring Samsung KIES to US
Then countdown to Gingerbread!

The Transform doesn't look too impressive in person. Much smaller screen, slightly smaller device, definitely thinner though. The Transform will have 2.2 before year's end, the Epic will have it within a month. Sprint has been beta testing the 2.2 release and found some issues, making sure it releases bug free is their priority right now.

we all know its going to happen but how soon till we see the leaks
Leaks? It's already officially out. Nexus One's are receiving the update as we speak. As for an EVO specific leak from HTC/Sprint, who knows..I'm sure the devs will have something out soon if there aren't any major hardware changes / requirements.
SDK is out NOT a working rom its no "leaked" pushed yet to the nexus 1
This update sucks for me if it doesn't fix the CPU problem of almost maxing out when scrolling which causes scrolling to be laggy. If they don't fix this by the time my next upgrade comes up I'm switching to a Windows phone. I want a smooth interface.

I guess I'm not following.
According to Engadget, Gingerbread, 2.3, is running on Nexus One's. They've received the OTA update.
Although, they may have been wrong and pulled the article and didn't say anything, since

I think this is what it said:
Nexus One owners feeling a little Nexus S envy can breathe a little easier -- we're hearing that Android 2,3 Gingerbread is being pushed out to the N1 as we speak. We'd imagine that all the slick new features that don't require new hardware (like NFC support) will be there, and we're definitely interested in playing with this built-in WiFi calling stack.

Any sense rom will have to wait till a 2.3 gingerbread source is released by HTC which could be a while, if ever. Cyanogen is already on 2.35.9 kernel which hopefully means that porting their work to 2.3 shouldn't be that hard to do.

Shut up, sit down, twiddle your thumbs, and wait for a press release from Sprint, HTC, Google, etc. announcing that Gingerbread will or will not be ported to the EVO. If you really want Gingerbread, go help Team Douche port it to be CyanogenMod 7. That's the most guaranteed way to get it to our phones.

Not sure if there's any confusion with what I think I read from your post but.. I'm talking about the AOSP source not the HTC source. That'll probably take a month or so after the Nexus One OTA to be released and then another month or so before CM releases a RC of CM7/2.3.

windows phone? are you on crack?
I'm guessing you won't see a Sprint/HTC Gingerbread ROM until sometime next year. Rumor has the source code being released when the Nexus S ships which is allegedly on Dec 16. Expect AOSP based Gingerbread ROMs to start rolling out around then and an Official Sprint ROM after sometime well after that, after its been thoroughly QA'd.
Motorola are a bunch of SOB. They do this with EVERY major phone they release and it REALLY pisses me off Is it so hard to say something and then commit to it? Specially when Gingerbread has already been released for other Motorola models with a very similar configuration to the Atrix. It's very very frustrating having a phone like the Atrix that doesn't live to it's full potential due to poor build implementation. Is Motorola that stupid not to realize that once gingerbread hits the Atrix it will sell more and people will be happier with their product?!
You think motorola don't want to update all phones first of all the other companies?
The more fastest updates, the more developers/money they need..
Why they unlocked the bootloader?
To get more people to atrix...
And why before a couple of weeks..
To earn some time, and keep us busy and satisfied, to forget the upcoming update!!
Anyway.. Can't wait too for the update..

I'm starting to to get anxious about the about update too. My wife's 7in Galaxy Tab (Sprint model) is getting Gingerbread this week, why not my Atrix.
As a person that owned 3 Motorola android phones - their update policies really piss me off.
They took forever to bring Froyo to Milestone, and still their final release contained a crappy kernel with error.
Now they are taking forever with GB for D2G and Atrix... If they don't keep their promise with unlocked bootloaders, this surely will be my last Motorola phone.
If my memory serves me right it was supposed to be the 11th. July when we got the update, so I for one will wait till at least the 12th. before I start moaning.

FYI, It's only July 7th, and a few days ago was a weekend and holiday. We are technically only 3 business days into July. Be patient.
You can always flash the leaked 2.3.4 build if you really can't bear to wait for the update.
to be honest, i can stand to wait a little longer so long as gingerbread is bug free.
the only thing i really want is a smoother browser. my last phone was a nokia n900, had that thing overclocked to 1.2ghz. whilst flash videos werent that great since it didnt really support flash 10 (no gpu accel), its browser was much faster and smoother.
sure you can argue that the atrix can render more pixels on the screen at any given time, but whats the point if its not smooth.
i also want to see if motorola have optimised motoblur. if its smoother, then i'll leave it as is. if not, im flashing this thing.

You bought the phone with Froyo, knowing it had Froyo, knowing it did not have GB, and Motorola has not said anything about a July release of GB. There has been mention in the past week or so on the Motorola boards of an upcoming soak test, that is all. Anything you read on other sites about release in July or any other time is pure speculation.
It doesn't matter which other devices have GB, the Atrix doesn't. Do you realise how much time it takes to develop, test, test, test these operating systems? Companies are not like the devs on the board here. They have procedures to follow, both internal and external. They quality test before releasing anything, hardware or software, then test some more.
I am sure Motorola does not want to release a buggy GB and are trying their best to give us a release which works as well as possible, so chill out and get off your high horse. Rome wasn't built in a day, and the world won't end if we have to wait a wee bit longer for GB on the Atrix.
Lol calm down its still pretty early. They never stated exactly when in july. Hopefully soon tho!

it's only the first week in july. I wouldn't expect it until the last week of the month. If at all.

I know this doesn't make things any better, but I don't Motorola every promised anything more than "Later this year". July was mostly what Kenneth inferred from his sources I believe.

I would say hold the tantrum for August 1st. Then I'll be right there with ya.

I would say since there is no official word from Motorola other than by the end of the year I would say come Jan 1st 2012 if it's not out then complain. I am looking forward to the release of GB just as much as the next Atrix owner but come on people learn a little patience. As the saying goes "Good things come to those who wait."

You can always flash the leaked 2.3.4 build if you really can't bear to wait for the update.

This is only for unlocked bootloaders (AT&T phones), in case you haven't noticed we're from Brazil and we still have locked phones (along with all other countries/operators).
PS: I'm really sick of people who thinks Atrix is only sold on USA/AT&T or that we are a minority
