Backing up ROMs can take up a lot of space. Is it possible to either backup to USB flash drives or move backups there once created with ROM Manager? What's the best method of ROM backup?

Thanks, okpc. What I'm unsure of is if I need to restore can I access a backup on a USB flash drive or other remote location?
Every now and then, i hook my tab up to my computer and move the folders for every backup except my most recent 2.
I keep an extra one in case there's something wrong with the most recent backup than I just haven't noticed yet.

Hello,
nandroid is a backup tool. It is run from recovery mode, and makes a copy of the internal memory of the phone and saves it on the SD-card. It can also backup the apps installed on the SD-card in the same manner. It is often used when flashing new roms to the phone, since it provides a means to fully restore the phone to the previous state.

So if i did a nandroid back up on my phone it would back up everything onto my sd card and then restore it to its original state (ie nothing).

Yes, the nandroid image on the SD card is an exact copy of the relevant parts of the phones internal storage, so when doing a restore everything will be back as it were before. If, however, you have apps installed on the SD card using Froyos apps2sd (which stores the applications on the ordinary fat32 partition of the SD card) those applications is not backed up. Nandroid includes functionality for backing up apps installed on a ext partition, though.
Personally I use Titanium backup to backup applications when I'm changing ROMs.

Does Nandroid overwite previously made backups, or will it make a new backup every time? In case of the latter, can you choose from recovery wich backup you want to restore?
(Before I flashed my Hero, I made a Nandroidbackup of the original ROM. I don't want risk loosing this backup when I make another Nandroidbackup.)
I think it overwrites, but i'm not sure.
No, it doesn't overwrite the old backups. You can choose which image to restore.

Since the nandroid backup is almost 2 gigs and i bought the 8gig(5.9 gig free)........that leaves me 3 gigs free. Is there anyway to move my nandroid backup to my cpu or a flash drive off of stickmount and be able to access it there with cwm thus leaving more internal storage? I am rooted
Two gigs for this thing? Nandroid on my phone is less than 500mb. Might want to confirm someone's size for this device.

But yes, you can put the backup on an external drive. All you have to do is copy the clockwordmod/backup folder onto wherever you want to store it whether it be on a flash drive, your computer etc. However note that if your device ever screws up e.g. not booting properly and your USB port is malfunctioning or broken (rare but on the off chance), you'll have a very bad time trying to make it work again without a nandroid on the device.
The new version of CWM (6.0.0.6) has changed radically, & copying the backup directory to an external device WILL NOT be a complete nandroid backup.
With 6.0.0.6 Koush introduced file deduplication into CWM to dramatically reduce the disk usage of multiple nandroid backups. Take a look at the Google+ post for more details.
TitaniumBackup will backup all apps and system data, but does it backup data stored onto the internal SDcard ? Say you copy a few albums and some pictures onto the SDcard, will Titanium figure this out ? My gut feeling is that it does'nt and if so, what would you recommend to take care of this ?
I would like to install a new ROM, and I know from past experience that the SDcard on the 'Nexus 7' will be completely wiped and want to ensure that I don't loose any data
I backup all my data regularly offsite by using both TB and nandroid backups, then use a sync app to copy the data including other folders (Like pictures) to a workstation.
Lost/Stolen/Broken/Messed up by a ROM update, I can restore and be back like new (even with a new device).

But ti backup will backup to and restore from a sd card with OTG Cable. Done it several times. just set your backup location to the sd card while its mounted.. but do not unmount while ti is open do not unplug otg without unmounting.. You WILL CURRUPT YOUR BACKUP.. YES I DID THIS once too...

i have a very serious problem and im already searching the internet for a solution since hours.
i had to make a factory reset and lost all my fpse savedata.i was playing many hours of FF8(70+) and these savegames are really important for me.
i made a nandroid backup which is broken and restored the fpse app with titanium backup with no luck.
does anyone know a file recovery program which works with the s4s mtp protocol?
most recovery programs on windows don´t recognize the s4s storage
would be very thankful for any help

try this k ahve not tried it as am not near pc atmo
go to settings/storage
press menu button
press usb connections
change from mtp to ptp
then try connecting to pc
and also retry usb mass storage enabler
it might work might not but worth a shot for a stab in the dark lol
Or try hexamob recovery lite app from Play Store.

What do you mean by broken nandroid? If possible, try to view the nandroid backup and manually extract the savedata. This can be done by using Nandroid manager.
If you want to get back your data forensically, it would be very troublesome. I know as I'm currently studying digital forensic for my course. You might also not be able to recover the files if the data had been overwritten.
Tried hexamob bit it doesn't work with the internal storage,my problem with my nandroid backup is that i can't restore it using CWM.
Nandroid manager sounds good but i don't think that my savefiles are included cause they are stored on sdcard/.fpse im not sure but i guess the nandroid backup doesn't include the internal sdcard?

Depending on what recovery you used and how you did your nandroid backup.
If you did a custom/advanced backup and selected specific partition to backup, there's a high chances that you might not have backed up internal sdcard partition.
If you chose the 'backup to external sdcard' option, there's probably a high chance that internal sdcard is backup too.
You should really try out the Nandroid Manager to see if your backup has internal sdcard partition.

Did you figure it out? I have same problem accept I want to undelete pictures from internal memory..

I was surprised with the Nandroid manager app - while it didnt work for me at first, i did get an update through and then it was fine. Currently, however, it wont restore my nandroid, but it might be worth giving it a try as previously mentioned
is there a way to back up my data on computer? Im using win 8 and i have got a lot of issues with my n4 driver

What do you want to backup and what do you want to use it for?
If you just want to create a backup so you can restore your complete phone you can create a nandroid backup with e.g. custom recovery TWRP.
If you want to backup some apps+data and e.g. settings you can use Titantium backup. It can backup/restore settings and apps including data one by one or batch.
Both above methods store the files on the simulated sd-card. If you cannot copy them with USB connection you can use AirDroid or something.
