Hello,
nandroid is a backup tool. It is run from recovery mode, and makes a copy of the internal memory of the phone and saves it on the SD-card. It can also backup the apps installed on the SD-card in the same manner. It is often used when flashing new roms to the phone, since it provides a means to fully restore the phone to the previous state.

So if i did a nandroid back up on my phone it would back up everything onto my sd card and then restore it to its original state (ie nothing).

Yes, the nandroid image on the SD card is an exact copy of the relevant parts of the phones internal storage, so when doing a restore everything will be back as it were before. If, however, you have apps installed on the SD card using Froyos apps2sd (which stores the applications on the ordinary fat32 partition of the SD card) those applications is not backed up. Nandroid includes functionality for backing up apps installed on a ext partition, though.
Personally I use Titanium backup to backup applications when I'm changing ROMs.

Does Nandroid overwite previously made backups, or will it make a new backup every time? In case of the latter, can you choose from recovery wich backup you want to restore?
(Before I flashed my Hero, I made a Nandroidbackup of the original ROM. I don't want risk loosing this backup when I make another Nandroidbackup.)
I think it overwrites, but i'm not sure.
No, it doesn't overwrite the old backups. You can choose which image to restore.

A little confused here and not that knowledgeable.
Switched my SD cards from a class 2 to a class 6.
I have the paid version of Titanium backup.
Here is what I did:
1. Complete (apps+data) Titanium backup
2. Nandroid + ext backup
3. Copied to computer hd
4. partitioned new card
5. Nandroid restore
(Note: Neither one backed up my photos/vids/music that I can find) But I did copy them to the hd and restored them so no biggie.
So.. should I do a complete Titanium restore now?
The reason I am asking this: All of my apps seemed to be working fine, however, I am not seeing any of the apps on my sd card as I did previously.

edit: just realized you were using apps2sd, so yeah i think you'll have to partition new card and put the image on your new card, then do a nandroid restore, no need for TI.

lol yeah I got it, after I actually read everything
I'm new to Android and modded bins so please bear with me. Before I rooted my Aria I made a nandroid backup so I can bring it back to factory condition if needed. If I make a nandroid backup with the cm6 bin will it overwrite the previous backup or will I have a choice of backups. Thanks in advance.
Each backup ranges from 70 to 100 megabytes depending on your apps and other stuff, that said you can have as many backups you sd card

Also, it will not overwrite the old one, it puts each Backup in a folder named with the date the backup was created.

The aria can hold as many backups that will fit on your memory card. It wont overwrite the old one, you'll be presented with options of what nandroid you want to restore by the date you backed them up.

So when I restore , I know what to look for !
I just recently got the MyTouch4G, got it permrooted and did a full back up of my sd card to my pc, but it's still on stock rom. I want to flash cyanogen7 but there's a lot of junk on the sd card first
My question is if it is okay to do a full format and if so, any advice on important folders or files I should copy back after the format, apart from the clockwork folder (i know that one is important)

Well do as I do just create a dir called Files and inside it make sub dir's and put all stuff you want in it like aduio, video, photo, ect. Also dont worry about the other folders in your root /sdcard. Far as format goes as you backed it up to your PC just format sdcard and if you missed something it will rebuild itself. Make sure you backed up video/photo whatever if you took any. Usually once you install something that requires you to place elements in the root of your sdcard after its complete always remove it this way you save yourself a lot of headaches later on. I always keep my dir nice and clean old habit of *nix world

Thanks for your response. Just curious but clockwork recovery on Vibrant saves itself as update.zip (if I remember correctly) on the root of the internal sd card. Where does it save recovery on MT4G? I didn't see an update.zip file after flashing recovery. Thanks again for your response

Its saved under /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup you will see the dir with timestamp. Normally I don't waste time backing up as I know what I am doing but if you do want it then go ahead and just mv the dir to your PC temporarily then sync back to sdcard once you are done.
Whatever data is saved even the cache on SD I know so if I find data that is valuable I still mv it to /sdcard/files and redirect that path. This way I have clean data scheme as you don't want 9000 bs on your root directory.

When you do this with MT4G, it puts that recovery flash somewhere.

I think CM comes with clockwork rom manager preinstalled. Your recovery won't change when you flash a rom. There's no need to back up recoveries because they're available in rom manager. If you need cw 3.0.0.5 just download the flashable version from the cm7 forum and save it.
Swyped on my rooted MyTouch4G
Since the mytouch 4g installs some of the apps on the microSD card, does a nandroid backup include those in the system image? Or should I use something like titanium backup for those?

Nandroid will back everything in the system including apps but some data is stored on the sd card as well. My advice is to a nandroid and backup your entire sd card to your pc as well

This is not really in reference to cyanogenmod but any rooted MT4G. When you root your phone you download and install clockwork. From rom manager, you choose ' flash recovery'. You choose your phone from the list and it flashes the recovery image somewhere on your phone. My question was to find out what directory does it flash recovery to and as what the file is called.
I am currently running gorillasens final but this would be the same as any rom here, possibly the exception being cyanogenmod

does your phone still boot up properly without any issues? i'm assuming since you had backups prevoiusly that clockworkmod is already installed on your phone. you can just boot into recovery and make another backup. it isn't necessary to have your original backup.
Maybe a good time for a reminder that SD cards fail and accidents happen. It's always a good idea to periodically copy the entire contents of the SD card, which will include your nandroid backups, to an empty folder on your desktop/laptop. Just be sure and enable viewing of hidden and system files & folders.

If I have apps stored on SD will clockworkmod backup/recovery take care of these - ie will it restore the apps back to the sd card after a recovery?

You mean sd-ext? Yes it will backup everything except photos,music things like that......

Yes it backs up all the apps on sdcard. Both the sd-ext apps and the .android_secure folder apps.
During restore of a nandroid backup it will first format the sd-ext and .android_secure folder and then restores their contents to it. So it will not mess up the things generally (unless u use the advanced restore to restore the contents to a different rom).

So this would work to backup apps on Sd, then restore them back to the Sd? I got a tun of apps on installed on my Sd card.. i've been wondering the best way to backup/restore them between flipping back and forth with different mods.
