Proximity sensor problem! [SOLVED!] - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone, welcome to the next thread of mine where I would like to share with you an interesting case of a'faulty' proximity sensor. The issue with the sensor started a few weeks ago (I own my defy for a few months) and the problem I had with it was that sometimes during I was making a call the screen was not being turned off, and more whats more annoying - the screen was never turned on again after finishing the call.
I do not have a screen protector and the screen glass is original.
I downloaded an application that showed the state of the sensor and after a many examinations i found out that many times the sensor does not distinguish between the states of being covered and uncovered.
I tried everything - factory reset, clean installations, different ROMs - nothing helped. The only thing that helped a little was a tweak availale in the CM7 ROM by Quarx (not available in the STABLE CM7 though!) in the screen settings menu -which forced the screen to be turned on after finihing a call, and I could also set the power button to end a call in the accessibility options. So this helped but did not solve my problem.
Fortunately, after many questions asked on so many threads, the user monecafe PMed me with a link to a video where its clrealy shown what is the problem and how easy it is to fix it!
without sayng more - here is the solution for anybody experiencing this issue:
http://youtu.be/uMk1S90MjbY
I hope this helps !
& a BIG THANK YOU to monecafe who sent me this video

this is great, very simple solution but...
how will that affect the water resistant feature of our defys?

try turning off auto-brightness
posting to say... try turning off auto-brightness (worked for me)

I used to have this problem. Stable CM7.2 solves this issue for me. I used to get the screen to turn on before by just rubbing the area with the proximity sensor with my thumb as if it was dirty.

i still have this problem. , after the Waterproof failed with my phone ( i dont leave it in water, i just wash it !! the proximity sensor failed too when i make a call screen is black cant see anything..so my question is if i change the screen touch proximity sensor work?? or its on the board ? where is the proximity sensor place?..how can i solve this problem by myself.
i saw the video but not solve the problem..
i back to stock ROM _there_ if i press power button the screen back but in coustoms ROMs the screen off not back till remove the battery!! any software make screen on at call and disible the proximity sensor ?
thank you inadvance

I also have problems with proximity sensor. With pressure on the screen where the sensor is located it is working again.
So I can believe that changing the screw pressure might solve the problem. But what is the initial reason for this? It is not a pressure sensor!

Found a possible Solution suggested by a supplier on Amazon;Switch off the phone - Hold power button & volume down button
simultaneously to bootinto factory testmode - use volume swith toscroll thru to 'test report' - select with the home key - scroll down to 'PS calibration' - select it then scroll to 'do calibration' let it do the calibration till it gives OK.Go back to 1st menu & reboot.
Was only partially successful forme, it may work for you.

Is this applicable for Motorola Defy or for the Chinese clone?
I tried this on my Defy running JB 4.1.2. I cannot get into the "factory testmode" even after pressing the VOL down key at boot up.
I just get a screen with an exclamation and the android bot.
Nothing happens after that.
BTW: What size of screw driver should I use to perform the trick in the video posted by the OP.

Not applicable to original defy

i think my proximity sensor is too sensitive because it ONLY works normal when i am outdoors at direct sunlight, but even when my shadow drops on the sensor it locks the screen, also in shade or in well lit indoors my proximity sensor doesnt work properly either.
i want to know if there is a way to change the SENSITIVITY of PROXIMITY SENSOR at will? i removed the screen protector so there is nothing on the way of the sensor.
also during a call pressing hardware buttons doesn't bring the device back from standby, hardware buttons are lit for a split second and nothing happens. is there any way to use the hardware buttons (except "end call" button of course ) during the call to turn the screen on?
t-mobile us hd2's proximity sensor works fine but mine has a problem, see the video here;

Any idea?
Any idea? Does anyone have the same issue? Plz it's a very irritating problem I couldn't find a solution..
I havent own HD2, but eventually I will get it this year.. So, I wondering why you removed screen protector? because of sense Ui wont work with screen protector?
I removed the screen protector because I thought that it blocks the proximity sensor and cause it to malfunction, I searched the forum and some people had the same problem but solved it by removing the screen protector. But it didn't work in my case so I'm looking for a solution.
As you can see on the video the proximity sensor works normal under direct sunlight when i move it to the window, in the room it somehow doesn't work correctly..
(english is not my native language so pls excuse me)
Thank you
Thank you for your creativity with subtraction
Sorry for disturbing again but my problem is killing me i am desperate to find an answer could you pls at least share some ideas or recommend something to do?
İ emailed HTC for the issue and waiting for an answer, if you have any idea pls feel free to share i'm stuck with this annoying problem, thnx..
HTC's response
I do apologize there is no way to change the sensitivity of the proximity sensor on your device. You can try a soft reset by pressing the reset button on the back of the device. If that does not resolve the issue then you may want to do a hard reset on the device. Hard resetting the device will clear off the device and reset everything back to factory settings. You will want to back up your information from the device before doing the hard reset. If the hard reset does not resolve the issue then I suggest contact our support department..........

No Wake-up after phone call

Still tested different NAND-Android Roms on my HD2 but got still a problem. If i make a phone call and the screen turns black while calling i press the endkey to end the phone call. But instead of turning on the device, the screen stays black and i need to pull the battery and restart the phone.
If i make a phone call and use the free speaking funktion, while the screen don't turn off, i got no problem when ending the phone call.
I don't know what the problem could be, but it seems, that the thing has to do with the sensor who turns the screen on and off. But i don't know if this is the problem and/or know how to fix this problem. Like i said, i tested different Android Roms formated the SD-Card, deleted cache and all the stuff, but nothing fixed this problem. :-(
28 Views and no one with this problem? :-(
There are 2 other threads discussing this issue already. Here is one.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=946012
Issue lies with the light/proximity sensor. Could be defective hardware. Could be incorrect sensor drivers. Could be dirty sensors. I have yet to take mine apart to check for dirt on sensors. Blowing into the led/earpiece opening seemed to help. I notice if it doesn't come back on I can hold a very bright light (ex: cigarette lighter) about an inch away and the screen comes on as long as the lighter is lit. Sometimes it stays on.
thanks for your answer. seems to be more things to test and maybe solve this problem. Thanks!
THANK YOU Agoattamer!
Your link helped me to solve the problem! I just cutted a little piece of my screen protector, where the proximity sensor is, and got no more freezes after the phone calls! The screen protector still got two holes for the light and proximity sensor, but this seemed not to be big enough. Anyway, thank you a lot for your post!

I also tried a a lot of different NAND ROM and I had also this problem and I can't use Android efficiently. Now I am using hyperdroid ROM ( first GBX now CM). With this ROM and sanity app (from market, with correct settings you can find with trying) I almost solve this problem. ( probability of 95 % I don't get this error)
hey guys! i found the solution goin through the market!
download an app called "Sanity" theres a free version in the regular android market.
go to the settings > general > check "Reverse Proximity" (This will give you some warning about not using it if you DONT have a buggy proximity sensor). Check it anyways. Then go back to preferences then click "Proximity" scroll down and uncheck Turn off screen and leave leave the Turn on screen checked. this will force your phone to stay on during calls so that it never has to go through the proximity phase of calls this no more black screens. Hope this was helpful ^_^

Screen stays off throughout the call.

Hey friends,
I am facing this problem while making calls that as soon as I press call button or receive button(while taking call) the screen turns off n stay that way till the call ends.
I have tried pressing all hardware buttons, even moved the dvp awayfrom me n into direct light but to no avial.though it did turn on once or twice out of twenty times.
Did anyone else experience this? Any suggestions are welcome..

Do you have a screen protector or case that is obscuring the light sensor or proximity sensor? My first guess is that something is obscuring one or both, because during a call the screen being off is a feature.

screen stays black/off during call
The screen stays black during a call and this happens ramdomly. I have a dell venue pro a t mobile phone but it is a pre release so it works on att 3g and all. I have switched the sd card with no improvement. I have ordered a transender 32 gb sd that I haven't received yet. The firmware version 2250.1400.7004.025 hardware is 112.576.2.0 radio soft 2.2.50.14 radio hard 8250. I have been unable to get any of the hardware keys to hang up the phone which if I get voicemail or something means I have to power the phone down to get the dang thing to hang up. Sometimes it works fine but I cant find a commonality software or hardware that causes this. It happens right out of the box so even after a software reset it can happen. Is there any solution for this issue?
I can't understand why the button on top doesn't hang it up.
PS I got this phone for free and I got ripped off LOL
wow just got a replacement phone today and im having this problem, As soon as I go to make a call the screen goes black and cant do anything on screen during the call, so i cant enter my password when checking voicemail
I think it's related to the proximity sensor. When you put the phone close to your head, the screen switches off. When you move it away, it will switch on - most of the time .
If it stays black, have you tried tapping the power button on the top of the phone? It switches the screen on without disconnecting your call.
A coworker got a replacement the other day(they send a refurb) phone and it had the same problem. Had to go through Twitter to get Dell to send him a new retail phone since they had send him 3 refurbs prior and they all had different issues.
This is just a general statement regarding phone proximity sensors. I have had multiple phones made by different manufactures that experience this to some degree (including the Venue Pro). One thing that I have noticed is that if the phone goes from your face directly into a bright light (outside is most common) it will keep the screen shut off but if the sensor is somewhat shaded it will resume normal function.
I got the same problem too and while it may be a proximity sensor problem, it is not controllable on the user's end. Unless the phone call disconnects magically, a battery pull is necessary.
I'm gonna be on my third one soon and I hope that i won't face the same problem.

Yes i recently got a new refurbed phone and this problem has arised. Complained to Dell and they are going to send me a Brand new DVP. I see a lot of people having this same issue with the refurbs. Currently Dell is out of new DVP due to them upgraing the firmware, so I have to deal with a broke phone till the end of August. Talk about a dissatisfied customer. Im thinking about selling this brand new unit when I get it, hopefully Toshiba has their device out by then
This is a Proximity Sensor issue. You can fix it though in the EM app. You can adjust the sensor readings and the phone will function like normal. Let me know if you need the values or a step by step!

A step by step would be awesome. I like being able to see the screen during a call.
1) Get the EM app, if you dont have it dial ##634# into the dialer
2) Get into the advanced menu by double tapping the black area and typing in "qwertyuiop"
3) Select "RD test", now enter *#6336# in the box that pops up.
4) Select "Sensors", and the "Proximity Sensor Config"
5) Set the following to these:
LED strength - 1
Diode select - 2
Pulse Count - 43
6) Hit set and then you are good to go!
I have noticed that one of my DVP's needs to have this put in again everytime I reboot the phone, the other saves it. Just an FYI for ya!
I get to step 3 and when i clock on RD test, I am prompted with a white box with blue trim and an X at the top right. can you advise on how to proceed?
Oh yeah, Im sorry I forgot that part. Enter *#6336# as the password.
When I dial *#634# it says thic code is not supported.
What does that mean?
I put in a different number combo before and it put me in the EM screen

The screen is supposed to go black when you make a call--or, rather, when you place the phone to your ear. There is a "proximity detector" along the top edge of the screen, and it detects your ear when your ear gets close. The phone then turns off the screen sensors so that your ear or your cheek doesn't push any buttons while you are talking, and turns off the screen illumination for aesthetic reasons. However, the proximity detector is supposed to cause the screen to turn back on when you remove the phone from your ear. That isn't happening for you. When it didn't happen for me, I took it to the shop. The tech said the proximity detector was broken, and ordered a new one. But replacing the proximity detector didn't help. He finally disabled the sensor so that proximity was never detected. that worked.
This story does not have a happy ending for me. The phone worked for a couple of days. Then I tried to reboot, and it went in to a boot loop. None of the standard cures for a boot loop is helping me. I doubt if the two problems are connected.
Proximity sensor turns off screen when you put it to your ear to avoid your skin touching the "End call" button or something else

Ok, was worth a shot...
Then you must likely have a faulty proximity sensor, as stated previously.
Download an app, like AndroSensor, and see what the output for the proximity sensor reads. When nothing is covering the sensor (top left corner) it should read 5 cm/2 inch, or something similar. If it reads 0, it's busted...

I have the same issue. In my case, the proximity sensor may have been broken or blocked by dust.
My "temporary" solution is using the power button to disconnect calls. While using a Bluetooth headset, the screen can be turned on. I hope there is a better solution.

Proximity sensor not working

Hi.
I have problem with proximity sensor. While making a phone call, display is always on.
I tried to enable it in settings. Turned it on, rebooted my phone and nothing happened.
Also tried *#*#6484#*#* solution, and when I open proximity sensor, there are 'test' and 'error' buttons on the screen and I can't click anything.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
In the engineering menu * # * # 6484 # * # * we find 27 - Proximity sensor
When approaching the palm to the front camera should show "0".
I always showed "5", did not want to be calibrated.
I pressed Error, went out and went to the engineering menu, a miracle happened - it was calibrated.

No, nothing happened. As usuall, screen is always on.
Yes, proximity sensor in settings was on and I have rebooted the phone.
I really don't know what to do. Is it because of bug in Global Rom or is it hardware malfunction?

Hold your phone with your left hand. The placement sensor gets blocked by your right ear when you make calls using your right hand. Give it a go and get back to us.

I can't help there but left/right holding is an issue I guess with this phone. Or maybe it's the Pro. I forget offhand.

Obviously the proximity sensor is at fault. Enter the menu using the code mentioned above, then press the menu/options button and select Calibrate proximity sensor. Once you're there, hold your hand over the proximity sensor (to the right of the front camera) and tap the Calibrate button. That's one thing that could fix it.
Failing that, go to incoming call settings and turn off the proximity sensor (turn off screen in call). Restart your phone, go to the same toggle and turn it on.
If neither of these works, you likely have a faulty piece of hardware. Your last option is to have the phone repaired or try a different kernel/ROM.

I just had the same issue , but in my case , I recently opened the bootloader and installed xiaomi.eu rom, everything was working fine. I mean is there any plane to compare the known issues between the global and EU ?
I'm using the miui global 10.3.3.0 PFGEUXM and definitely have some "issues" with the proximity sensor.
I'm still trying to tie down the exact nature of the problem:
With a quick test, or doing calibration, it seems to work exactly as I would expect; the screen switches off as you approach closer than about 2 inches.
However during a long call I notice the display start to flash "on" frequently in the corner of my eye and soft keys can get inadvertently pressed.
It kinda feels like it gets worse during the call, is it time or perhaps the phone warming up in my hand? Not sure.
hi @All!
is there still no permanent solution for fixing proximity bug?
its really annoying and making me crazy....
even after making it working again using quicktune app - doing one call it is broken again

Exactly what i've experienced.
Super annoying when you accidentally hang up during a call.
It happend countless times so far.
I'm on eu beta btw.
Wish there would be a solution.. . But afaik proximity is even more bugged in non miui custom roms.
I had this problem to. my proximity sensor what not responding at all. I thought it was defective because the calibration was not working to.
Then i went to the system update settings, downloaded the latest package and flashed it. After reflashing it started working with no problem at all.
Factory reset did the trick for me. Working normally now.
Install Quick Tuneup. Then do Sensor Celebration & Restart your device twice.
Two solutions

It turns out that the problem is because MIUI does not activate the proximity sensor when the smartphone is turning on.
To force MIUI to ALWAYS activate the sensor at each start, we can do two things:
1- Always have "Automatic brightness" activated
2- Activate the "Pocket mode" (the best choice)
After applying one of these situations, it is necessary to restart the phone.
Only by activating the pocket mode it is no longer necessary to have automatic brightness activated all the time.
In the video I show how to activate the "pocket mode"

I published this solution in a forum in my country (Colombia).

I don't speak English, I had to use the google translator, sorry for any translation error.

above is proof to SOLVE the Proximity Sensor no reaction in my Redmi Note 7.
I was having lots of TASKER Profile depending on whether or not Proximity Sensor is covered.
I found all those Profiles no more function due to the issue after I believe OTA to Global rom the latest ( August-2019 )
Thanks again to KMILO_PARRA

Actually, the proximity sensor for Redmi Note 7 isn't in the "usual" top-center position, it's a little bit on the top-right edge (if you watch the phone "against the light" you can actually see a small dot on that side).
If you're calling\responding try to put your ear at that angle, you'll never have those problem anymore.
I know it seems crazy, and of course the first times could be "unusual" to put the ear there, but it actually worked out flawlessly for me.

It works for me
Hi guys,
I have made a little workaround, using the suggestion of @KMILO_PARRA user. (pocket)
https://taskerprofilecenter.blogspot.com/2019/09/project-proximity-sensor-workaround-for.html
This is mainly for Tasker users, but I have generated an APK to be installed too. So any user can use it. But what is needed, by now, is root, as it needs to write to Settings table.
Please, report me back if it does the job or not.
Note1: For those users that don't know how Tasker works, just install the app, and give it root permissions, and allow Write System Settings permission (Android option). I recommend you to not set it as an app to be killed from the OS using the battery optimization, as it could be killed. It acts on every shutdown and device boot.
Note2: It will generate two permanent notifications: Place holder, and the one that is the mini-Tasker code monitor (required). Just, disable the Place holder one, as described in the same notification (click on it), and disable notifications completely for the installed app to get rid of the last one.

What it does exactly?
Well, as I explained on my web, it just changes the value (0/1) from the 'enable_screen_on_proximity_sensor' Global Settings table, that makes the pocket option to be toggleable in an automated way.
So, be sure not to use that option as a daily one, as the project/app uses it to allow the sensor be available at startup. And do not forget that you will need root too! Sorry.
What to download if I don't know what Tasker is?
You will only have to download the APK from the 'Kid App (APK)' link, provided under the 'DOWNLOAD' section. Nothing else.
If you know Tasker, you will know what to do.
Does it work really?
I'm currently testing this workaround, but as I could see, at least on my device (lavender too), seems to be working as expected. But needs to be tested a little more.
So, if it does not what it's intented for, please, report it me back.
After installing the app, giving root permissions, and allow it to modify system settings, reboot the device to take it effect.
