I am new to the tablet world. A few weeks ago my gateway laptop died after 6 or so years of dedicated service, and before it happened i had already decided that i was going to go to a tablet when it did.
to this point i am enjoying the tablet, although i wont say it has been an easy transition. Really wanting a bluetooth keyboard folio.
I am out of town for work, aka long boring nights in hotel rooms. I was considering renting a movie through market, but then i started looking at the prices. Most of the movies on there you can rent at a red box for a dollar, what makes them worth 4 through android market???
if anything its more profitable for everyone to distribute the movies in this way.
Anyway thats my gripe, perhaps others will opine.

i agree with you buddy the movies are massive expensive plus i dont think that quality is great. so more i often i use either netflix or use "a torrent downloader" market app and dowload AVI files with mx player
I set up a server that streams my video collection to my android device using plex. Saves my sanity...

Generally the studios set a price and then the various distributors add a small markup to make it viable for them. So a studio may say, we'll license Star Trek to you for $2 per rental. Then the distributor (in this case Google) may add 99c or $1.99 to make it $2.99 or $3.99 and rent it for that amt. for a certain period of time. In other words, those are the prices you're going to find for renting movies online, period because they've more or less been set by the industry. Maybe a $1 cheaper here or there, but those are the general prices.
I don't know if you're into Anime, but for next time you may want to consider crunchyroll.com which has an app on the market, (i subscribe to the site) there's a lot of free anime on there too or if that's not your thing crackle comes to mind, though the crackle app I don't think has been optimized for HC - you may be able to view video through the website directly.
I like the offline option on the market videos - something I wish netflix had. If I have the time I usually redbox a few movies and rip them for the Acer.

I dumped my Netflix account a while ago once they raised the price as I hardly used it. If they finally get out an android app for mobile streaming I may just reactivate. Looking more forward to an official Hulu app.

I couldnt care less about netfliz coming to android as i have it on my ipod touch and i tether to my epic all the time. As for hulu the ios version apparently you have to pay for a subscription, kinda sucks, ill just use the free hulu apk on here,
However netflix would look nice on my 4inch SAMOLED Screen compared to the much smaller ipod touch retina...
I honestly can't wait for either of these apps as I have subscriptions to both. I use HULU for Family Guy, Bones, Greys Anatomy etc. I use Netflix for movies and Spartacus. AWESOME!
If were gonna get Netflix on our Epics, it's gonna have to be a hacked version as they don't plan on releasing it to the Android market. It will be part of the carrier crapware on second gen Snapdragon devices. It's pre-installed on the LG Revolution, at least it was on one a CES. They believe that the fragmentation of Android makes it too difficult to implement a DRM solution across all devices.

There was talk about Netflix back in November from some netflix boss. "Early next year" was what it said I think. Still not here seems to be a common theme....
Would sure be nice to have though.
I have total faith in our dev teams to port this ASAP. Heck! They could probably even prove their fears to be reality. Just saying...

Netflix would be awesome!
Netflix confirmed that they would develop for Snapdragon first. Another black eye for Galaxy S phones. Not that Samsung would even want Netflix competing with MediaHub, anyway.
I got rid of them also when they raised prices. I bought a Slingbox pro and got the sling player app and man I can't believe it took me this long to get this. It is pretty awesome and works very good even on 3g. I wonder if netflix will work well on 3g, but unless they start getting better releases you can stream it was a waste for me. With 4 HD DVR's from Directv and expanded storage on them all with Multi-room viewing the sling box and sling player is just amazing. Oops this is not a slingbox Dtv thread sorry
I'm definitely looking forward to Netflix on Android.
Looking forward to netflix, but there is no hurry like i said earlier, cause i stream it from my phone to my ip0d touch (wireless tether).
As for hulu app, i dont want to pay for hulu plus like the ipod touch version, glad there is the free mod in the development section.
Bet they both require 2.2.1 or 2.3

Thank you for reminding me that it existed.
For those interested in streaming, I bought a Roku (you can get as cheap as $59.00), and I stream that through another port on my slingbox. So I have my DirecTV box and my Roku both streaming to my Android.
I am considering getting a Hulu subscription, then I can stream movies and Hulu from my phone (plus can play them on my PS3 and Wii).
Thanks for confirming. I thought I was delusional about the price change. I still love Netflix. I was thinking about it the other night. I don't have cable tv. I use Hulu for free, Netflix for streams as well as other websites. But I was thinking I could illegally download certain tv eps. Though it's really nice to just know they're there. Just as I was talking to my girlfriend yesterday because we've been having financial issues and I said how much do you think you spend average on Redbox. She says about 20. I said well lets get Netflix switched back on. It has been canceled currently because my debit was stolen. Really sucked. Carry zipped and chained wallets!
+1 on Netflix and Hulu
It always cracks me up to read about "Netflix not on Android yet" with the 2-3 NETFLIX ADs on every page, all over the xda Forums. like a little twist of the NetFlix Knife
I for one use netflix all the time. I watch it while im at work during downtime. and on the road would be great especially for road trips. the streaming is amazing on home pc or through the ps3. can you imagine this on out phone and even the tabs?
Two things come to mind in light of the 3.1 update for the Xoom. First, to the notion that the Xoom is the "Nexus" of the tablet world, this is good news. We got the latest honeycomb update, direct from google, before anyone else. Thats what we were all hoping for, right? The optimist in me wants to think that this will be par for the course, at least for a while. HC is barely even a newborn right now, and with all the tablets coming out, you've gotta think there are more than a few timely updates down the road for us Xoom users.
Now for the bad news: Google Video. On the surface, it seems like a cool idea, and if it ever works for the wifi xoom I'll know a bit more about it. But why would Google create and feature a pay-to-play video app if an Android Netflix app was in development? They couldnt possibly compete with Netflix for quality, variety, or price (I can rent two movies for one day each for the price of a month of unlimited netflix). The answer, then, must be that they dont expect to compete. Netflix isnt coming any time soon, if ever, and Google has supplied us with a much more expensive replacement.
Now that we're seeing our first major update, what does the future look like to you?
Ipad is the same with iTunes and netflix....not an issue HC now has drm so will most certainly have netflix asap.

You're reading WAYYY too much into this. Google just proved they can get content providers to agree and stream movies on Android with DRM. The products are completely different. Subscription and pay-per-rent services can co-exist. I can't watch Netflix on a plane last I checked.

Good point about offline.
Also, new releases, or movies up to the demand of Harry Potter, Inception and The Kings Speech would take a month to get to Netflix DVD rentals and probably years till they made their way to on demand streaming.
Movies like this would presumably be available on or near release date for rental in the market. (Although at a slightly higher price than I'd like to pay)
For a long time I didn't see a reason for me to purchase a tablet. The only use I can think of right now is for me to have more access to my files on a bigger screen via dropbox.
That said, I still reaaaaally want a Xoom, but it's not a good enough reason for me to drop $800+ (Xoom+accessories) since my phone can do the same thing, except on a smaller screen.
Yes, there is the multimedia portion; videos and whatnot but again, what else are tablets used for? I'm not an artist either so the drawing/sketching capabilities do not apply to me.
So hence my question, what do you guys use your tablets for?
Also, do phone applications work on tablets or do tablets have their own set of applications? How is the resolution of the apps if tablets can use the same apps that phones use?
Cheers!
I like this thing, but it's definitely a toy. If I hadn't gotten a great deal on it, I would have been disappointed. Functionality is not what I'd hoped, and browsing the internet is painful at best. I wouldn't dream of using it for serious work. In a few years these will be "useful," but for now it's still just a toy.
It seems like you have your mind made up. I use mines for:
Browsing
YouTube
Gaming
Emulators
Remote Desktop
Texting
Video Editing
Reference
School
Emailing
And a whole bunch of other things. I traded my iPad 2 for it and don't regret it one bit. More appps are coming to Android and are tablet friendly. You can run phone apps also. I haven't even rooted mines yet and if I did the list would be even bigger.

I use mine for several things, but the major thing for which my phone would be completely inadequate is that I teach Bible class on Sunday mornings from my tablet. My tablet is wifi only so I cannot speak for those who can haul theirs with them all the time and get 3g on it.
Generally speaking, Android phone apps will work on an Android tablet. Some apps need to be updated for newer versions of Android, especially Honeycomb, and will force close. Some phone apps will not expand to fill the screen but will only take up a small portion of it. Some apps will fill the screen automatically and the resolution looks fine. Some apps will fill the screen but they look odd. It is a trial and error "test it and see" matter. There are also apps that have be designed or redesigned just for tablets. Most tablet apps will say "for Honeycomb" or "HD" (High Definition) or "for tablets" in their names, but this is not always the case. The Market does have a special section of featured tablet apps and you can find many more by searching on "Honeycomb" or "Tablet."

I actually think browsing the net is the best thing it does. Quick controls and thumb keyboard make it very fast. Use something like pulse and it's a media consumers dream.
I got my 3G Verizon Xoom on eBay for $490 shipped... I wouldn't pay regular price either.
At the end of the day... it IS just a toy, but it is definitely closer to a laptop than the iPad 2 is, I goto the iPad 2 for my wife & she loves it.
Xoom is much more versatile than the iPad 2.
At the end of the day it still seems like it's just an expensive toy as of now...
But I may pick one up tomorrow just to play with it to see if I like it just because I'm kind of a gadget whore. Hahaha
Question, does LauncherPro(Plus) work on tablets or no? Or is there a tablet version of it? I saw some "hands-on" videos on youtube and there seems to be a bit of lag when transitioning between homescreens. Hmmm!
Well I have a post about this. It is not exhaustive but it covers a lot with photos and elaborations.

What do you do with your 10.1 tablet toy??
There is no reason for a tablet. Just buy a laptop. Its half the price and its a better value. I would never drop 800 on a tablet.

Well, you just went beyond what I said when I called it a "toy." Its silly to make statements like this when 1) laptops are not "half the price"; 2) nobody cares how much YOU want to spend on your electronics; and 3) not everyone makes the same uses of their stuff as you do. If you like laptops, that's great. I do too. Tablets are a different form factor and thus have different uses.
Anyways, make your own decisions about what you want to spend your money on, just don't expect it to be anything more than it is.

Agreed, my laptop costed me 3 grand, so I disagree with the comment above yours.
Point of this post was to see if there's any other usages for the tablets that I had not known about. Which does not seem to be the case. I was hoping to have more reasons to justify my purchase (to make myself feel less guilty y'know? )
That said, I may buy it and play around with it to see if I like it and/or will be needing it.
Anyone know if its possible to haggle the price at BestBuy or FutureShop in Canada ?

I admit there really is no reason for a tablet. I've wanted a Xoom since release but wasn't comfortable with paying $800 or signing a contract, so the wifi version came out and I jumped on it.
Now that I have the Xoom, I still don't really know what to do with it. I'm reading books on it, thats cool...it's cool for browsing and what not. I can't justify it's reason for existence other than it's cool.
To summarize;
Paid $600 for Xoom Wifi
Can't figure out what I needed it for
Happy as I hell that I have it

Ha! Haggling a price at a big-box store? Are you from Europe!
Just kidding, but the answer is a flat "no chance." Nobody at those stores have the authority to change pricing.
A word of advice to you: I'd wait for the second generation devices. The Xoom is a solid early-adopter device, but now that you've managed to avoid it for this long I'd put it off for a few more months while the second-gen devices come out. Cheaper, lighter, and (hopefully) will be supported for longer by google/manufacturer. Then again, if you spent $3k on a laptop (I hope it has a money printer and a grappling hook for that price!) then I'm guessing that you're not too worried about the few hundred dollars it would cost to trade up when you want to.

Tablets are a lot easier to carry around. It's easier to hold while standing up, laying in bed, and kicking back on a couch/recliner/lawn chair. I'm tired of being hunched over a keyboard and mouse. I can rest my head and browse. If I need to do something that my Xoom can't. I can RDP into my PC, or walk to my PC and do what I need to do. Also battery life on my Xoom is just awesome.
I feel tablets are like the consoles vs PC war. Sure PC is superior to consoles in many ways, but in my opinion, it can't beat picking up the controller and relaxing on the recliner playing a game. Same sense, I can just pick my tablet up and browse.
I have no laptop nor netbook. So I bought the Xoom.
Yes it is a toy, but using it while lazing on the bed/couch is so comfortable.
Web browsing comes first to mind. Though it won't be as full featured as using the desktop but normal web surfing works very well and using your fingers instead of a mouse to navigate websites makes so much sense.
Next would be ebook reading. Seriously, if you read your books and you have no ebook reader then using your tablet as a book is a must. It has pretty much replaced my normal paperback reading. And best thing is it's pretty easy to just sideload tons of free ebooks into the Xoom for your viewing pleasure anytime.
And finally gaming. Just to pass the time. I pretty much stopped gaming on my nexus one because well, playing games on a 10.1" screen is just so much better.
Just buy the xoom at a Costco/sams club for you can return it after two months.
I plan on doing that so if new generation devices come out then I will just swap it out.
Right now i dont see the need for a tablet, although im envious of the people that do have them. But i just dont see the need for it at the moment, i just recently got a brand spankin new huge 25" all-in-one pc for less then that of the Xoom. As of now the Xoom isn't for me but i have my sights set on the Galaxy 10.1
I bought This tablet For a few reasons and one being honeycomb 3.1 with google movie rental. My buddy's Xoom got the movie rental update on 3.1but after booting this tablet up, I don't see the movie rental icon...does anyone know where that app is or whether I need to download it? I've already tried checking for updates and my tab is already 3.1.
Any one know what's going on or have the same issue?
Thanks!
The wifi xooms just got it yesterday. No word on us yet

This sucks as we already have no way of getting netflix. I am about to travel quite a bit and bought this device with that in mind. I hope google doesn't take too long because between this issue and my newly wasted $30 purchase of logmein not working well on GT 10.1, I am a week away from returning this and gettng an IPAD 2.
For all of Androids flexibility, I'm getting frustrated with the lack of apps/funtionality existing on the "other" device.
Sorry for venting but I'm having my doubts about this purchase for me but want badly to love the android experience. That said, I love the ibternet surfing experience with full flash capabilities and the widgets.

from my experience the only issue with log me in is for certain programs that specifically require you to press the (enter/return) key such as when I use Disby (messenger program) since it simply wont send the messages. a different keyboard like swype or swiftkey should fix that i believe

Sorry to hear that, the ouya's not for everyone. Hope you find something that fits your needs. I've had mine since day one and am really glad I have one as it has allowed me to experience Android gaming in a whole new way. I was tired of using tablets/phones and hdmi-out cables and getting crappy performance since the tablet/phone had to dedicate horsepower to two screens which would eventually cause it to overheat(Galaxy S 3). As someone who enjoys playing Android games on the big screen it's perfect for me plus it's absurdly cheap so it's easily replaceable.
I'm not interested in gaming although my 2 yr old may start to take an interest soon. I ise it for xbmc, internet radio, iplayers and some other play store apps and am delighted with it.
Bit fiddly to set up but got there in the end with help on this forum.

To each their own. I can see that some people will not like it though, but having a roku box that gets used mostly for netflix and hulu (wish android has amazon videos), and an snes still attached to my tv and a samsung fascinate (read old a!! phone) this ouya is a good replacement for three devices. It's got a few good games, but having rooted and added the pay store, I can put more on it and I can try some coding myself. Plus I do have to add that I got it just recently when it was on sale on amazon, $75 plus a $25 credit towards ouya games. I've been eyeing it at my local target for some time, but have found other uses for the $100. I do wish amazon video was on it, then I could completely replace my roku.

There might be a workaround. I can't vouch for this but I thought you might be interested. You would have to flash CM11 and try it out. You would loose the actual Ouya game part of the console. I bought mine for the XBMC anyway so loosing Ouya games was not a big deal. My old laptop was running rough and XBMC was not happy with the hardware. The Ouya store should be coming to android in 6 months or so and you will have the games back.
