Looks like the corporations may finally be catching up with the xda devs. Not really. They're just starting to get their heads out of their collective booties.

I dumped my Netflix account a while ago once they raised the price as I hardly used it. If they finally get out an android app for mobile streaming I may just reactivate. Looking more forward to an official Hulu app.

same here with netflix
I couldnt care less about netfliz coming to android as i have it on my ipod touch and i tether to my epic all the time. As for hulu the ios version apparently you have to pay for a subscription, kinda sucks, ill just use the free hulu apk on here,
However netflix would look nice on my 4inch SAMOLED Screen compared to the much smaller ipod touch retina...
I honestly can't wait for either of these apps as I have subscriptions to both. I use HULU for Family Guy, Bones, Greys Anatomy etc. I use Netflix for movies and Spartacus. AWESOME!
If were gonna get Netflix on our Epics, it's gonna have to be a hacked version as they don't plan on releasing it to the Android market. It will be part of the carrier crapware on second gen Snapdragon devices. It's pre-installed on the LG Revolution, at least it was on one a CES. They believe that the fragmentation of Android makes it too difficult to implement a DRM solution across all devices.

There was talk about Netflix back in November from some netflix boss. "Early next year" was what it said I think. Still not here seems to be a common theme....
Would sure be nice to have though.
I have total faith in our dev teams to port this ASAP. Heck! They could probably even prove their fears to be reality. Just saying...

Netflix would be awesome!
Netflix confirmed that they would develop for Snapdragon first. Another black eye for Galaxy S phones. Not that Samsung would even want Netflix competing with MediaHub, anyway.
I got rid of them also when they raised prices. I bought a Slingbox pro and got the sling player app and man I can't believe it took me this long to get this. It is pretty awesome and works very good even on 3g. I wonder if netflix will work well on 3g, but unless they start getting better releases you can stream it was a waste for me. With 4 HD DVR's from Directv and expanded storage on them all with Multi-room viewing the sling box and sling player is just amazing. Oops this is not a slingbox Dtv thread sorry
I'm definitely looking forward to Netflix on Android.
Looking forward to netflix, but there is no hurry like i said earlier, cause i stream it from my phone to my ip0d touch (wireless tether).
As for hulu app, i dont want to pay for hulu plus like the ipod touch version, glad there is the free mod in the development section.
Bet they both require 2.2.1 or 2.3

That shouldn't be a problem if you have dk28 installed.
Btw about nextflix, I think I heard something about it coming in the spring like around end of april or something. Not sure about that though.
I dont really care for hulu, but netflix would be interesting to see because I have an account set up for it.

Thank you for reminding me that it existed.
For those interested in streaming, I bought a Roku (you can get as cheap as $59.00), and I stream that through another port on my slingbox. So I have my DirecTV box and my Roku both streaming to my Android.
I am considering getting a Hulu subscription, then I can stream movies and Hulu from my phone (plus can play them on my PS3 and Wii).
Thanks for confirming. I thought I was delusional about the price change. I still love Netflix. I was thinking about it the other night. I don't have cable tv. I use Hulu for free, Netflix for streams as well as other websites. But I was thinking I could illegally download certain tv eps. Though it's really nice to just know they're there. Just as I was talking to my girlfriend yesterday because we've been having financial issues and I said how much do you think you spend average on Redbox. She says about 20. I said well lets get Netflix switched back on. It has been canceled currently because my debit was stolen. Really sucked. Carry zipped and chained wallets!
+1 on Netflix and Hulu
It always cracks me up to read about "Netflix not on Android yet" with the 2-3 NETFLIX ADs on every page, all over the xda Forums. like a little twist of the NetFlix Knife
I for one use netflix all the time. I watch it while im at work during downtime. and on the road would be great especially for road trips. the streaming is amazing on home pc or through the ps3. can you imagine this on out phone and even the tabs?
Ive had my Fire a few days now and have done a lot of modding. Ive rooted it, installed TWRP, then CM7. Then gapps, market, etc. Then I decided I wanted to go back to rooted stock so I installed the prerooted 6.2.1 along with go launcher ex to have both the Amazon launcher and a more standard android interface, and be able to switch between the two. And no matter what way I set it up there was always something that just didnt work the way I wanted.
The main issue I had was that almost all video had out of sync audio. Internet videos, netflix. And I tried several different wi-fi connections. One of which is a very solid 20 mb/s connection to my laptop. I took my mother in laws samsung galaxy 7.0, set up the exact same video using the same wi-fi just to see if it might be the connection, and the galaxy was perfect, and the Fire just enough out of sync to be irritating.
So I set up a return with Amazon, got it back to full stock, and boxed it up. But now Im having second thoughts. I know how popular it is, and it seems like it has a lot of great developers working hard on roms. So Im wondering if I should just keep it, and hope that someone makes a fully functioning ICS port that fixes all the issues that are keeping this from being my ideal android tablet. Or should I go ahead and return it and cough up another $200 and get the Samsung galaxy plus.
Anyway I figured you guys would be the best ones to ask for advice regarding this. Thanks in advance for your feedback.
If it doesnt work for you, well, it doesnt! Thats that... Get an iPad 2 (seriously). The Android tabs despite their hardware specs arent that great currently.
/not trying to start a flame war here, i own several tablets and for me the iPad works best... YMMV

I have to agree, and the 4:3 aspect ratio of the iPad is annoying.
I'm confident ICS is coming to the Fire, but if you have the money to upgrade to the Galaxy, I would probably do that. Can't really complain for $200 on the Kindle, though. Plus Samsung had played games with customers before with promising updates and not delivering. So maybe I wouldn't go with it. Moto's new 8" tablet is appealing except for the fact that its tied to Verizon.

Well if your having second thoughts, take it back. With a somewhat big purchase like that, you'd want to be 100% sure you like it. If you really want a small tablet get a cheap Asus tablet, or a small laptop that has a touch screen.
u have issues.
get what works for u, don't convince yourself to keep something u don't want. I sold my tf101 transformer too big for my taste, I don't watch videos on a 7" tab. the fire is awesome for me

Well its gone. Boxed up and at the ups store.
Gam3r 4 Life I think I am right behind you.
I have used mine since Christmas day and although its a neat gadget its really neither a good reader nor a good tablet. It kinda lacks an identity. I emailed Amazon about their lack of TTS on the reader for this unit and their reply was pretty much "sorry.. you have 30 days to return it".
I guess for $200 I will just wait and see what comes down the road, and continue using my Samsnung Infuse for this kind of stuff. It has a 4" touch screen and I dont watch alot of videos anyway so it works ok for now.
Nice try Amazon, but I think you forced this thing to market without thinking it all the wary through. Maybe the next gen will be better. Well anyway I have another couple weeks to see if I can learn to like it. But at this point, I am thinking no.
I think the expectations might be too high. You're looking for the best of both worlds, and if you want media that you don't have to rip yourself, you're not going to get it on a rooted tablet, that's been made apparent by the MPAA. Netflix only runs on Silverlight or on platforms on which you don't have full access do the device where the studio's have guaranteed control of their media.
And given the limited RAM available on the Fire, it's not surprising that running a full sized ROM like CM7 could cause video issues when streaming. Probably not enough remaining RAM to buffer the video with CM7 running, that's my guess.
*IF* you want to get CM7 and then some other method of video streaming outside of Amazon, you'll need a more capable tablet like the Galaxy 7, Galaxy Plus, or the Flyer, and you'll need to pay a lot more for it up front to get the flexibility you want.
the 4:3 aspect ratio is the best feature of the ipad...
I hate how everything is 16:9 nowadays. it's terribly inefficient.
Sent from my Kindle Fire using Tapatalk
I've always been curious about this.
My pro-Apple friends have argued the same thing, saying Apple has done tons of research and 4:3 is best for a tablet.
But 4:3 is one of the main reasons why I'd never buy an iPad. If entertainment media is one of the prime features of a tablet, why would I want a screen that has black bars on the top and bottom (effectively shrinking the screen size) whenever I'm watching hi-def widescreen video?
In general, android tablets compete on price. They are the Yugos of the tablet world compared to the Benz that Apple offers (at a Benz price, I might add)...and the fire does a heck of a job at $199. If it works for you at that price point, great...if not, well get an iPad.
I wouldn't recommend looking to replace the fire with another android tablet, however, because once rooted and sorted it really competes with the best of them.

LOL, I had a Yugo!!! I bought it from a guy that needed to pay his rent for under $500. If I remember right his name was Billy Bob, or something like that (and the name fit). The only thing he requested to keep from the car was a shifter knob that looked exactly like a bathtub water knob. My mother and I drove it til the engine gave out at about 30,000 miles. Not bad for under $500.
Funny story, that thing was such a piece if junk that the shifter knob and handle use to pop off and you could see through to the ground through the floor. So my mother would call me and say it happened again. I would have to go rig it back on just so she could drive it again. My mom was such a good sport and never got mad about it, and laughed about it with me. (RIP).
You know the saying that your first idea/answer about something is usually the right one. Well that applies here. When I first decided to get a tablet I wanted the HTC EVO View. But I didnt want to have to add a data plan to my bill so I ended up with the Nook tablet. Then the nook color, then the vizio vtab, then the Coby kyros, then the Kindle fire. Well after all that Im back to the evo view and found it on amazon for under $300. And this is a wi-fi/ 4g version, but doesn't require a data plan. So on payday thats what Im going to get. I originally had the evo 4g as my cell, and now have the evo 3d and love it. So the Evo view is basically a larger version of my phone which is exactly what I want from a tablet.

Agreed, that's why I haven't wasted my money on one.
Damn you Swype!
I've got my KFire rooted running CM7 and haven't noticed any sync problems at all with netflix or youtube. I'm completely happy with it and all these devs are busting their butts to get some pretty sweet ROM's running on here. Hopefully MIUI will be one of them. ICS will work for now once they get the audio/video issues worked out.

Ugh darn PayPal issues. Okay I'm reserving mine on Monday. Does anyone know "about" when I'd receive mine? Sucks that I missed the Feb 4th deal.
I am one of the original backers as well and I'm extremely excited! Dedicated system for emulators, indie games, media, all in a small cheap package. I mean I could hookup my phone/laptop to the tv and find some bluetooth controller but this is more convenient. One could also argue I could buy a more powerful HTPC, I could, but I bought an Ouya. :3
i am a backer too and i agree i could have gone with other things but this is cheap small easy to use and setup and take anywhere. and most of all its a leap in gaming for those that want light games and entertainment. i plan on taking mine to my friends house all the time, or modding my motorola lapdock to use this on the go anywhere. i have lots of ideas and plans for mine.
yeah i also backed the ouya and im excited for it. i didnt want the "special edition" one because i didnt like the colour. i also got 2 controllers for it
I backed it with $99 on Day 1. THen rebacked it for $130 when they offered the bronze one.
I discourage Ouya.
It's bound to be an utter failure.
E: Only die-hard Android nerds will buy it.
The argument "we want to get people back to television" is horribly biased and makes me laugh like a damn choker.
There is plenty of consoles out there today, yet no consumer seems to give much of a damn about "openness" of the console.
Of course they don't. They want games, not source code, GPIO and extensive customization possibilities.
E2: I never backed next-gen consoles. They break the purpose and meaning of the word "console".
well i didn't think much about it until i logged in here the other day and it was as the top of the forum... now kinda wishing i had of... oh well

I'm not a die-hard Android nerd, nor much of a hacker yet I backed it.
The OUYA will be great as a media center to access all sorts of digital content on a TV as well as acting as a gaming console for less hard core gaming. I currently use a ROKU to access Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc and will replace that with this. Console gaming is far down the list of reasons I wanted the OUYA, but I am excited to see what might come out once it releases.
I'm a day one (maybe two) backer. I'm neither all excited or doom and gloom on it either.
The reason I did it, it looked interesting. Two, I'm hoping maybe it or something similar will catch on and give an alternative to the major consoles--Playstation, xbox, nintendo--or PC (can be expensive to keep hardware up to date. Three, the market can use something like this so the independent guy or small company can have a low entry point into getting into the gaming market beyond the mobile device There are a lot of people with good ideas, but don't have the financial resources to try the idea. Last, it was only $100, so the cost was quite minimal.
There are some good games on the mobile platform. Some that could be fun on the TV such as Shadowrun. I think developers could make something even better if the platform could support it.
I'm not saying I expect the graphics to up with the 360, PS3 or next versions of these. But as the Wii showed, if you have a fun game to play, people are willing to play with lower graphics.
Plus, I think it will be interesting to see what other people, such as the XDA community, will be able to do with it as well since it's suppose to be open. Another bonus will be able to use the other media services on Android such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, Plex, Crackle, MLB, NHL, NBA, and so forth. This is assuming side loading APKs should be relatively easy and the APK plays nice. It won't replace a HTPC, but maybe a set top box.
Have one shipping soon to my place! Can't wait.
Mine will be here before end of April. Can't wait!
I backed Ouya during its kick starter campaign. Looking forward to my kick starter limited edition with my user name stamped on it and its 2 controller

Actually i want to raise a $99 on their kickstarter campaign, but i was too late to have a pledge on their site. But defnitely give it a try when it is out in our market since this doesnt make a hole in our pocket
I backed this when it was on Kickstarter. I have a hard time accepting prophecy from someone who didn't pick up any recent consoles because you're out of touch with the direction of gaming. This isn't an insult and I totally get your response but you're missing out on the evolution of games and gaming.
For 99 bucks, I'm willing to risk it to see how it turns out. You can say "I told you so" and it will only sting up to 99 dollars worth of pain.
What I don't like is that they plan on releasing a new console every year and at 99 bucks a pop, it's still cheaper to pick up the current/next gen console.
Yep I backed it. Least its paid for. Also grabbed a 2nd controller. Just waiting on them to ship out. =)
Only thing that annoyed me on Kickstarter... didnt know this till LATER.. Is that we KS people.. didnt get a discount on the Ouya.. its the same as "preorder" price for everyone else.. which does make me feel lil cheated.. We backed the project, but didnt get any perks for the normal order.
Does anyone know why Target, Amazon and the Ouya website stopped selling new ouyas?
Has the company gone under?
Because no one buys them.
Has anyone looked at the price for a Ouya console lately at around $200.00 or more? CRAZY? With the 10 million from Alibaba we may just see that new Ouya? Every time I think its finally finished they always seem to have a surprise

Yikes. I found mine about a month ago at a Target about twenty miles away; they literally had one left, sitting on the shelf, for $99. I only bought it to make it an XBMC server, which it's mostly done great at (my Pioneer receiver won't play audio if it's hooked into it, and my TV creates a loud burst of sound static pretty much every time something starts). Only problem is it updated immediately when I plugged it in, so as far as I understand, it's not easily rootable anymore.
It's sad that the OUYA couldn't reach it's expectations. The promises they made on kickstarter sounded good, but they weren't able to fulfill them. They missed the chance from the beginning of the release.
So im a bit happy that i waited until the release. Sorry for those who backed the kickstarter project.
I preordered my ouya and tbh I was very happy with what I got. xbmc, emulators towefall bomb squad, my ouya served me like a champion. gave it to my nephew the other week and have a new android based TV box to carry on the fun.

I refuse to live in a world where the only way to enjoy gaming with an Android device in public is by owning and old ass Xperia Play.
There are 0 alternatives to the Xperia Play.
All these pads that you have to carry in your pocket and attach/deattach look goofy as f*ck and are annoying.
The new Snail W3D is HUGE and I don't want something that looks like a handheld console anyway. When im on a meeting with middle aged men at an office I can't pop out MUH GAMING CONSOLE.
Carrying an actual handheld console in 2015 along with your normal smartphone... LOL.
This is why, for me, the Xperia Play was perfect. You want to play: you slide the gamepad out and enjoy some great ms-dos/old school emulation gaming. When you are done, slide in and it looks like a regular phone. THATS the only option. I need that. I CANT enjoy modern games, I don't care about them, and I can't enjoy old games with touchscreen controls. How in the f*ck im supossed to strafe and shoot at the same time in Doom? Jesus christ, they ruined everything. If only stupid Sony wouldn't held the stupid patent, we could have had something similar to the Bladepad or the Razer Junglecat for the main Android phones, but meanwhile, unless you want to buy an iCrap, you are stuck with the Xperia Play which is a slow POS nowadays.
Im only asuming that's the reason, because I refuse to believe no one has thought about releasing a sliding gamepad EVER for any Android phone.
This is my rant after years of waiting for something.
Brother. I know your pain. You have said what I've been thinking for a REALLY long time. Respect.
Dukedoom - i think just like You. But there are no choise in the world. Really. Only Xperia Play up to today have a gamepad. A real gamepad and it's a real phone. I think that we never get another phone with gamepad simmilar to ours Xperia Play. It's really sad.
I bought a gamepad for my s4. It's easy to connect and to mount. But it's still another device with another battery and another thing to carry. Like Ngage long time ago - xperia play had small group of fans. But thoese fans are loyal as hell.
You guys definitely aren't alone on this one. I'm getting tired of the Play's lack of power. If I run the stock rom all the emulators run smoothly but I get shafted in the apps department. If I upgrade to 4.x then I can run modern apps but the emulators are sluggish. I'm also on a R800X so my rom options are limited as well. There is still a demand for a device like the Play but everybody is too stupid to make it. I can't find anything like it even if I look at Chinese imports and they practically invented handheld game consoles that use emulators!
I feel the pain however the play sold **** all so no one even wants to make no. 2 much w3d it's your best option at the moment. If we could get more interest in the devices to accumulate than maybe Sony would make another but for that to happen the vita must die lol. Sure would be cool if you could just slap a new cpu in and recode some software but that's not how it works. The play could run newer os but you need a really good developer to optimise. Much w3d is gigantic which sucks I'll be buying one right now they are on pre order though and I never pre order anything.

I agree with the sentiment here. I have been waiting for a proper sucessor (slidedepad) for a long time.
Unfortunately the Xperia Play was sold in a moment where mobile gaming was still in its infancy, and phones weren't the little powerhouses of today. If it was released today, we would have a very potent quadcore with at least 2gb ram, HDMI out (or at least a dock for that) and possibly remastered PSP games made for it, which would certainly drive more sales. That, and having actual analogs instead of touchpads (like the PSP Go) would really help make it sell like hotcakes, possibly paving the way for an Xplay 2 and more.

Well i upgraded my phone and just use a keychain controller. It's not as good as the xperia play, but that's a nice alternative.
I own an Impulse controller :

And i ordered a cheaper clone for my gf, friends and brother (back then got it for 4€ each) :

Quick review : Well, that's a nice piece of hardware, but you lack L/R/Start/Select (well just use the virtual controller on screen for those and that's ok). The cross is not really precise, don't expect to play fighting game with that (Hadoken are tricky), but that's ok for most of games.
Edit : It seems there is a new challenger :

Last summer.... I picked up a R800x off of ebay for $25 with Free Shipping. I was really surprised how good of shape it was in.... I would say an 8 out of 10. I only use it for gaming because I have a note 3 as my daily driver. But I'm loving it for emulators... definitely worth the small amount I paid for it. Maybe you could pick one up cheap too on eBay if you keep your eyes peeled .

The white look is nice and there's definitely a lot more development for the R800i variant than the R800x. It looks like a nice phone. I only got a R800x because a friend of mine had one and I was teaming up with him to help him root it and unlock the bootloader (This is the only Sony phone I've ever bought and I was totally unfamiliar with Flashtool, ftf's, etc... ).
It would be good to have you back on here with an Xperia Play in hand .... when I was learning to root and Rom this phone, I found a lot of your older posts to be really helpful.

I am glad to hear that my posts have been helpful here. I am going to get a PLAY within a month or so, but I will snag one. The Nexus would stil be my main daily driver and I would be buying the PLAY as a gaming device only. But it would be nice to be back here on this thread with a PLAY in hand. Despite moving on to the N5 forum I still check this forum almost daily despite not having the phone anymore, simply because this forum felt like a small group of friends and I spent so much time on this forum thast I simply could not go without still seeing what was going on. Looking forward to getting another PLAY. I am glad that my past posts were helpful, look forward to being back on here soon. I will keep ya'll posted.
I wouldnt be able to get a Xperia Play at this point. I have a LG P970 which pretty much has the same hardware as the Xperia Play and I cant wait to upgrade it to a Samsung S5 Mini, the phone is bloated as **** and browsing of the internet is not smooth.

A few mods and the xperia play is super smooth
Sent from my LT28i using XDA Free mobile app
Agree with all the sentiments here. Despite the varied Android ecosystem, nobody including Sony wants to bite. The Xperia Play was ergonomically perfect, but no doubt it would have been the usual paranoia and cross product in fighting that killed it before it had a chance based on some really stupid decisions regarding the specs. Such a shame and depressing state of affairs how close we got to the perfect gamer phone.
i still use the play for emulators and legendary games like bruce lee, fifa 12, and star battalion.
you know what's close for me? i've been using the xperia ZL for a year now and 5.0 HD screen w/quad core on a 4.4 kitkat and 4glte with the OEM option to sync my ps3 controller.
i have all my xperia play games on this device and having to play it on a sony phone w/my ps3 controller without any lag is just as cool for me. i'm a sony fanboi and having the xperia lounge, playstation mobile, walkman player still reminds me of my play without the convenience of the controller slide out.
with the sync, i just turn on the ps3 controller and connects with my newer xperia. it's not completely the same but it feels close.
Guys , what do you think if we find someone how can make a modern Xperia play alternative at kickstarter.com ??
or we can email Sony or do something , so they can made an Xperia play 2 ...
