Implications of the 3.1 update - Xoom General

Two things come to mind in light of the 3.1 update for the Xoom. First, to the notion that the Xoom is the "Nexus" of the tablet world, this is good news. We got the latest honeycomb update, direct from google, before anyone else. Thats what we were all hoping for, right? The optimist in me wants to think that this will be par for the course, at least for a while. HC is barely even a newborn right now, and with all the tablets coming out, you've gotta think there are more than a few timely updates down the road for us Xoom users.
Now for the bad news: Google Video. On the surface, it seems like a cool idea, and if it ever works for the wifi xoom I'll know a bit more about it. But why would Google create and feature a pay-to-play video app if an Android Netflix app was in development? They couldnt possibly compete with Netflix for quality, variety, or price (I can rent two movies for one day each for the price of a month of unlimited netflix). The answer, then, must be that they dont expect to compete. Netflix isnt coming any time soon, if ever, and Google has supplied us with a much more expensive replacement.
Now that we're seeing our first major update, what does the future look like to you?

Ipad is the same with iTunes and netflix....not an issue HC now has drm so will most certainly have netflix asap.

You're reading WAYYY too much into this. Google just proved they can get content providers to agree and stream movies on Android with DRM. The products are completely different. Subscription and pay-per-rent services can co-exist. I can't watch Netflix on a plane last I checked.

Good point about offline.
Also, new releases, or movies up to the demand of Harry Potter, Inception and The Kings Speech would take a month to get to Netflix DVD rentals and probably years till they made their way to on demand streaming.
Movies like this would presumably be available on or near release date for rental in the market. (Although at a slightly higher price than I'd like to pay)

Netflix coming to snapdragon phones

Here
Yay for EVO's everywhere!
Pretty cool.....gadgets galore!!!!!
You know who I wish had a streaming app? The redbox. If you arent familiar with it its like a big red box they sit out in certain stores, mostly walmarts and walgreens here to where you can rent movies for $1. The releases come out wayyyyyy sooner than Netflix gets them.
redbox is ok, i prefer netflix. can't wait for this. i'm surprised someone hasn't hacked an iphone port over yet. (although they might have, i've had my evo for 4 days )
I believe Netflix is keeping people from driving under the influence. Redbox doesn't have seasons of TV shows either. but i do go to redbox for the new releases
Can't wait!
I personally go to redbox for new releases, netflix streaming for odd movies and tv shows, and blockboster if I want to watch an old movie.
I still can't believe blockbuster is even in business. I think it's 4.99 to rent a dvd.
Don't hold your breath folks. Like the Verizon Skype or NFL apps, it's probably going to be carrier specific. Because why make a good product available to everyone, when you can nickel and dime them for features?
never really stopped us before has it

To me thats poor marketing. The I phone for instance was only at at&t it sold alot there but now apple is taking it to verizon too and its gonna double their sales. Why hold something thats capable of making goo bud money to one source. Its great for the people selling the product but the producer is crippling their self. I can understand testing the waters before you dive in so I guess I just made no sense. Lol. Everyone may be dumber for reading this post and I apologize.

While common sense says it's bad, the big media companies are all retarded and do this. It's the same reason you have DRM on media and games, why you have to wait a month to get movies through Netflix or Redbox, why Netflix's online selection is smaller than their DVD selection, and so on.
You might want to read TechDirt for more info.
Netflix would be good, right now I have hulu getting me by.

NetFlix soon, Hulu sooner

Looks like the corporations may finally be catching up with the xda devs. Not really. They're just starting to get their heads out of their collective booties.
http://lifehacker.com/5729461/hulu-plus-announced-for-android-netflix-possibly-coming-soon
I dumped my Netflix account a while ago once they raised the price as I hardly used it. If they finally get out an android app for mobile streaming I may just reactivate. Looking more forward to an official Hulu app.

same here with netflix
I couldnt care less about netfliz coming to android as i have it on my ipod touch and i tether to my epic all the time. As for hulu the ios version apparently you have to pay for a subscription, kinda sucks, ill just use the free hulu apk on here,
However netflix would look nice on my 4inch SAMOLED Screen compared to the much smaller ipod touch retina...
I honestly can't wait for either of these apps as I have subscriptions to both. I use HULU for Family Guy, Bones, Greys Anatomy etc. I use Netflix for movies and Spartacus. AWESOME!
If were gonna get Netflix on our Epics, it's gonna have to be a hacked version as they don't plan on releasing it to the Android market. It will be part of the carrier crapware on second gen Snapdragon devices. It's pre-installed on the LG Revolution, at least it was on one a CES. They believe that the fragmentation of Android makes it too difficult to implement a DRM solution across all devices.

There was talk about Netflix back in November from some netflix boss. "Early next year" was what it said I think. Still not here seems to be a common theme....
Would sure be nice to have though.
I have total faith in our dev teams to port this ASAP. Heck! They could probably even prove their fears to be reality. Just saying...

Netflix would be awesome!
Netflix confirmed that they would develop for Snapdragon first. Another black eye for Galaxy S phones. Not that Samsung would even want Netflix competing with MediaHub, anyway.
I got rid of them also when they raised prices. I bought a Slingbox pro and got the sling player app and man I can't believe it took me this long to get this. It is pretty awesome and works very good even on 3g. I wonder if netflix will work well on 3g, but unless they start getting better releases you can stream it was a waste for me. With 4 HD DVR's from Directv and expanded storage on them all with Multi-room viewing the sling box and sling player is just amazing. Oops this is not a slingbox Dtv thread sorry
I'm definitely looking forward to Netflix on Android.
Looking forward to netflix, but there is no hurry like i said earlier, cause i stream it from my phone to my ip0d touch (wireless tether).
As for hulu app, i dont want to pay for hulu plus like the ipod touch version, glad there is the free mod in the development section.
Bet they both require 2.2.1 or 2.3

Btw about nextflix, I think I heard something about it coming in the spring like around end of april or something. Not sure about that though.
I dont really care for hulu, but netflix would be interesting to see because I have an account set up for it.

Thank you for reminding me that it existed.
For those interested in streaming, I bought a Roku (you can get as cheap as $59.00), and I stream that through another port on my slingbox. So I have my DirecTV box and my Roku both streaming to my Android.
I am considering getting a Hulu subscription, then I can stream movies and Hulu from my phone (plus can play them on my PS3 and Wii).
Thanks for confirming. I thought I was delusional about the price change. I still love Netflix. I was thinking about it the other night. I don't have cable tv. I use Hulu for free, Netflix for streams as well as other websites. But I was thinking I could illegally download certain tv eps. Though it's really nice to just know they're there. Just as I was talking to my girlfriend yesterday because we've been having financial issues and I said how much do you think you spend average on Redbox. She says about 20. I said well lets get Netflix switched back on. It has been canceled currently because my debit was stolen. Really sucked. Carry zipped and chained wallets!
+1 on Netflix and Hulu
It always cracks me up to read about "Netflix not on Android yet" with the 2-3 NETFLIX ADs on every page, all over the xda Forums. like a little twist of the NetFlix Knife
I for one use netflix all the time. I watch it while im at work during downtime. and on the road would be great especially for road trips. the streaming is amazing on home pc or through the ps3. can you imagine this on out phone and even the tabs?

Netflix.....that is all

I look at the specs, and all the pretties between the Xoom and the iPad 2 and the only thing I am envious about is that damn netflix. I am very very disappointed we don't have it at release and really no word in site about when / if the Xoom will get it.
Oh, and that magnetic cover is kind of cool.

Xoom will be getting it as it was announced for Tegra 2 processors. Who knows when though.
Yeah I hate waiting for the native Netflix & Hulu apps.
PlayOn could be a good alternative in the meantime, but the Xoom needs Flash for it to work. It's subscription based and a little pricey (about $40), but it works great on my Droid X.
Can't agree more. They need to get Netflix done, NOW! Even the Nintendo 3ds will have Netflix. Windows phone 7 has it. This is ridiculous.

Actually not, how long has the 2.2 sdk and the 2.1 sdk been out? How long has netflix been on icrap? Since August of 2010.

Netflix needs to hurry up. I hate to say it, but not having Netflix on a 10-inch tablet is almost a dealbreaker for me. Hulu and Netflix are probably my top two apps that I use on the iPad.
I would feel a lot more comfortable about purchasing a wifi Xoom if I knew it would absolutely have Netflix.

All trolling aside, if you are really so dense as to not understand why netflix apps are popping up exclusively on closed software ecosystems and not android (hint: google "DRM") I should be the one spamming
NetFlix will be probably be released on a device-by-device basis as they figure out how design their software around protecting those who have the means to protect themselves
Netflix is kind of a must have app for me in my personal usage. I like to use it while on break at work. I have an iPad and I had an iP4 until pretty recently and they both play Netflix and Hulu really well. I have an Atrix now and love it, but no Netflix kinda sucks. I want to get a Xoom and give my gf the iPad but I want some Netflix action. If the lapdock dock for the Atrix wasn't so overpriced I'd pull the trigger on that because it will at least work with Hulu's normal site.

You seem to be ignoring the netflix player that works on just about every PC known to man. PC is certainly not 'closed'. Also, you probably meant to say 'walled garden'...

My question is what does this mean:
Pluggable DRM framework
Android 3.0 includes an extensible DRM framework that lets applications manage protected content according to a variety of DRM mechanisms that may be available on the device. For application developers, the framework API offers an consistent, unified API that simplifies the management of protected content, regardless of the underlying DRM engines.
And how would that affect/help Netflix
With the recent changes to Apple's subscription requirements, doesn't Netflix now have to offer a subscription for the same price or less in the itunes store? Since Apple takes 30% of all those purchases, I wonder how long it's going to take until Netflix gets pulled from iOS entirely.
I'm pretty sure the only reason we don't have netflix is because of Dalvik. It's incredibly hard to obfuscate your code enough to stop people from figuring out how you're decrypting the video stream. Now that processors are coming out with security features built in, they won't have to worry about that....
That's my thought anyway.
Netflix and air video server are needed.....

Netflix still on the way, says NVIDIA PR

Figured this was an update, as last word was from CES press release just saying NVIDIA and Netflix were excited. http://blogs.nvidia.com/2011/03/motorola-xoom-and-atrix-4g-make-their-debut/#comments
We are working on it. It’s a 3-way cooperation. We supply the technology in the Tegra and the secure OS, the OEM must integrate it and work out an arrangement with Netflix. I think all parties are working towards a complete solution. Stay tuned." Ken Brown from NVIDIA

I hear you, but note that PlayOn allows use of standard Hulu, meaning you save the $7.99/month of Hulu Plus. For me, that's well worth the $40 first year cost.
Can't wait for Flash, for this reason alone...
The sad thing is that all the delays are related to the DRM protecting the movies on Netflix, which are all readily downloadable all over the internet in higher quality long before they ever hit Netflix instant watch. It's like they're wasting their time for no real good reason.
And to make things more sad, the unavailability on our Android devices is probably going to lead some people to piracy as a way of getting content on their devices. They're shooting themselves in the foot.

But its good to hear that I will be able to watch movies hopefully soon one my Xoom.
Hopefully we will see this soon as I think the media end of things is what will attract many consumers. The iTunes, Hulu and netflix support makes that a compelling product for many. I hope that Netflix starts the avalance of media support for Android.

Renting movies through market, Kinda Pricey!

I am new to the tablet world. A few weeks ago my gateway laptop died after 6 or so years of dedicated service, and before it happened i had already decided that i was going to go to a tablet when it did.
to this point i am enjoying the tablet, although i wont say it has been an easy transition. Really wanting a bluetooth keyboard folio.
I am out of town for work, aka long boring nights in hotel rooms. I was considering renting a movie through market, but then i started looking at the prices. Most of the movies on there you can rent at a red box for a dollar, what makes them worth 4 through android market???
if anything its more profitable for everyone to distribute the movies in this way.
Anyway thats my gripe, perhaps others will opine.

i agree with you buddy the movies are massive expensive plus i dont think that quality is great. so more i often i use either netflix or use "a torrent downloader" market app and dowload AVI files with mx player
I set up a server that streams my video collection to my android device using plex. Saves my sanity...

Generally the studios set a price and then the various distributors add a small markup to make it viable for them. So a studio may say, we'll license Star Trek to you for $2 per rental. Then the distributor (in this case Google) may add 99c or $1.99 to make it $2.99 or $3.99 and rent it for that amt. for a certain period of time. In other words, those are the prices you're going to find for renting movies online, period because they've more or less been set by the industry. Maybe a $1 cheaper here or there, but those are the general prices.
I don't know if you're into Anime, but for next time you may want to consider crunchyroll.com which has an app on the market, (i subscribe to the site) there's a lot of free anime on there too or if that's not your thing crackle comes to mind, though the crackle app I don't think has been optimized for HC - you may be able to view video through the website directly.
I like the offline option on the market videos - something I wish netflix had. If I have the time I usually redbox a few movies and rip them for the Acer.
