So, I'll be picking up my Evo Design 4G bright and early Sunday morning I'll let you know how it goes and what I think after I've had it for a couple hours.
I've been waiting a while for a smaller version of the Evo to hit sprint... and now the wait is OVER
Just read about this on Engadget, looks like its going to be a pretty good phone. Might even pick one up off contact.

so this thing doesn't have a dual-core processor right?
No, it's still single core, but I'm not THAT hardcore on my phone anyway.. with what I do with my phones, once I find the right rom and kernel combo I'm smooth sailing. I've got two upgrades in the waiting so I'm going to use one on this phone. I just want it for the smaller frame. Personally I think 4.0" is perfect. These new 4.5, and 4.7" screens coming out, might as well have a damn tablet pressed to your face
The global roaming capabilities seems interesting as well. I wonder how well that will work in gsm areas around me.

Why not just get a 3D?
Whooo! (Cole Voice...)
A little more ram and a extra 200mhz on the CPU PLUS a smaller screen. Whats the point in buying it?
Seems like a waste of time and money.

I want a smaller phone, that's my deal.. I'm sure I'll get the itch for better processing but I'll wait till mid next year and use my other upgrade for an LTE phone when its all up and running.

I suspect that it will be as Sprint handled the GSM roaming on the TP2... i.e. it will not work on GSM in the US. The TP2 was SIM locked to only allow the GSM to work outside of the US.

Yea, man. If I did a lot of international travel I could see myself buying this phone.
I was reaaaally digging this phone when I first read about it and looked at the video on it by wirefly.
Im still luggin my tp2 around, but its just about had it, it freezes after every text, sometimes it even restarts
And thats bad since I get like.... upwards of 300 texts a day
in anycase.
When I compared the tp2 and the design side by side.. the screens width is almost exactly the same.
its just taller.
When compared side by side with the 3d.. it lags a bit when doing the caruswheel and unlocking.
But aside from all that it looked amazing.
the screen is very pretty and I love the design of it.. smooth and hints of curves.
The main thing killing it for the 3d is the design of it. Its suck a brick.. sharp edges.. and that cam buttun just jumps out into everyones buisness lol
That being said.. Im rally torn between the 2.
When Im in austin tomorrow Im going to have to check it out again cause the one here in ft hood was a little glitch. it doesnt even auto rotate or light up the notifications led.
OH and day one while I was playing with it, (since it didnt rotate) I checked for updates and It already has a softwear update LMAO
Why not get the Nexus S 4g? Its 4" and a great phone.

My gf has that phone.. she has alot of issues with it.
That and the release version has a bug where you cant send any text over the 160 charicter limit
3rd party apps dont help because even tho it lets her pass the charicter limit and 'chain' the messages like everyother phone does.. her phone will only send a "@" symble instead of the message everytime she passes the 160 limit of the phone.
And I text alot and send texts up to 400 charicters all the time.
So that wouldnt work for me
And as far as I can tell there wont be an official update for some time
I was thinking about getting the galexsy s ii epic 4g touch.. but dont really like the interface or the size. Its a tad too big in my opinion

No update any time soon? ICS will likely hit the NS4G not too soon after the Galaxy Nexus is released. Probably early to mid December. The SMS issue is easily solved by integrating with Google Voice. SMSing is about million times better with GV than with anything else you'd try. Back up, online management, and now MMS support.
If you look hard enough a new/new-ish NS4G can be had for $200 on ebay. Not bad for a soon to be ICS, WiMax, and Google Wallet capable phone. I'm upgrading to the Galaxy Nexus if it comes to Sprint but I wouldn't have a single problem holding on to it for another couple of months if it doesn't.

anyway, the guys at the sprint store are saying the galexy nexus is set to his around november 15thish
As far as the nexus s 4g, I can get it for like 50 bucks from sprint cause of my sero upgrade price.
but her phones already running 2.3.7 and she has the texting issue, her phone freezes and restarts all the time, and she looses data randomly.
and its not just hers, her sister has the same phone with the same problems
I decided against the evo design. 100% no after looking at it at another storeyesturday, it only plays the left channel of any audio, I loaded multiple music videos on youtube of songs I normally listen to and I was only getting have the sounds out of the phones speaker.

I've had my AT&T 3g Nexus One since July and loved it..... But, now i'm just becoming frustrated with it. I have been getting constant lags and freezes with it ever since the more recent Froyo updates (or maybe thats just when Ive been noticing it, I never used it with éclair). I'm running stock with launcher pro if that has anything to do with it, but the stock launcher seems so much more buggy. The screen also isnt very responsive and the buttons can be annoying at times. I'm having random moments where the touch screen goes all crazy and I can press the back button, menu button, home, etc all in the middle of the screen as well. I've been contemplating making the switch to a Desire or Captivate if Gingerbread doesn't help or fix these issues? I really don't want to make a switch because, i've spent over $125 in cases for it and definitely wont make or match my money...
Dont do it. At least not for the desire as its pretty much the same phone and even has the same pentile AMOLED, and the captivate has slow updates and community is nowhere near the N1s. If you are running stock then use your warranty and get the touch screen fixed.
i sold my brand new desire and frantically searched for a att nexus one lol. where were you last week!? hah.

Speed issues on a Nexus are software problems 99% of the time. Just root the phone and install a fast rom like CM 6 and it will be good as new.
Also btw, how are you on AT&T in London?

unlock, root, and put CM 6.1 RC1 on it. use ADW instead of lpro. format your sdcard, clear caches, and enjoy the speed again.
or
sell it and get an iphone. or wp7. or whatever. just get whatcha like.

I also have the ATT n1. Since day one I had the phone rooted, unlock bootloader and fresh copy of the cm6. I never notice lag or reboot. My phone runs like butter. As long as you know what your doing, you should not have any problem with your n1. Even release of new nexus s I don't think I will replace it. I am just not really into Samsung. Prob hold out for HTC android phone.

Lol @ people who still havent rooted their n1.
Sounds like you need an iphone
After a few months, the novelty of the phone has worn off and I find myself disliking and regreting my choice to buy this phone more and more every day. From the lack of froyo, software stability issues, gps, problems, useless keyboard, etc, it just seems more and more unsuited for daily use. I'm also becoming disappointed in Sprint's network. At first I thought it was leaps and bounds better than T-Mobile but now I'm not so sure. "4G" is an absolute joke unless you're outside, standing still, and 100 ft from a tower. This is not a flaming bash thread, just how I feel. I'm wondering if anyone else shares my views.
P.S. I live in NYC

Sorry for the bad experiences man. I'm actually the opposite. I like it more and more everyday. I'm running epic experience froyo. Gps locks in seconds.(for me anyway) runs very smooth. Can't comment on 4g cause its not availabe in my area. Everyones has their opinion I guess. Have you considered the evo? I have to say thogh the evo has a better radio. A couple of friends have it and Ill be sitting right next to them and they get 2-3 more bars than me in certain areas. That's just my observation tho.

Personally, I still dig the phone even more than I did when I got it. My 4g isn't great either, but there when I need it- anywhere from 2-5mbits. Despite the little the devs have had to work with, my phone (on 2.2) is way faster than when I got it. Stability wise- I've had a few self induced setbacks, but now I back up more often. Once the source is out, the sky's the limit.
sent from my RAZR
I feel the exact opposite. I'm loving my epic more and more every day. I've been running the froyo betas since day one and it runs just as good if not better than my buddies evo running the official froyo. I do believe I can do without the hardware keyboard because I find myself using the software kb a lot more than I thought I would. But my phone has been great so far. And for some reason I've never had a problem with gps. Even on froyo. I'm in ny also but I live out east in suffolk county so we don't have 4g yet. Doesn't bother me though when I'm home I use my wifi and at work we have wifi as well so I'm good with that. Also.. since having the epic, I get kind of disgusted when I look at a non SAMOLED screen. They look so washed out. This includes the iphone 4s screen although it is a bit sharper

The incredible is cute I guess. But I needed a mans phone. I'm done with any screen smaller than 4 in. The incredible is a decent phone but it is inferior to the epic in just about every way. But have fun with that though. And on top of that u pay so much more a month. So its a lose lose in my eyes. Sero ftw
Also i don't see the problem ppl are having with sammy phones. This is my first sammy phone after about 6 htc phones and I don't regret the switch at all. It feels a little plasticy at first but the quality is definitely not bad at all

Agree 100%. I would like to see 2.2.1 officially released though.
I am still in love with the phone. The only thing I wish is that we had 2.2 officially.
Actually, yeah, I'm right there with ya. I waited and waited and held off on buying an Evo, in spite of the fact that my wife and my dad were loving theirs, anxiously awaiting Epic launch day. I'm starting to regret it now, like for real. But I don't think the Evo is the perfect phone for me either, but it seems closer. I really like some of the other phones out there, but now I'm stuck on a Sprint family plan, and there isn't **** coming out any time soon (yeah, I know about the Knight, or Evo Shift or whatever, but I don't want a keyboard, dammit). Seems like T-Mo and Verizon are getting sweet new high end phones every week, and Sprint is just happy to get by on the success of the Evo. I guess I might be looking for a trade for an Evo soon, or selling mine on Ebay to buy an Evo. I really want to love this phone, but Samsung just isn't letting me. It'd be nice if every phone was available on every carrier. Stupid back door carrier/manufacturer deals.
Can we just stop making posts about how we hate our epics this is how the community gets into fights, that and when noobs ask questions.
THE FROYO EPIC EXPERIENCE
I'm in nyc and i dont have any of the issues you seem to have, i get 4g at work 5/1 d/u
i get 4g at home 7/1.2 d/u, my 3g service is fairly awesome(except on the corner of 22nd and park where i get ONLY get 4g). the phone itself is everything i expected, i bought great hardware. i fully expected to be able to hack at it and make it how i wanted, which is what we got with the albiet lackluster dev community, but at least i have froyo, the only major drawback that i can see to the epic has been the rather inconsitent seeming quality control on the hardware itself.
GPS working perfect on some or not at all/spotty on others. the major downside to the GPS problem and trying to find a fix(which could be as stupid as putting a papperclip on the internal antenae(dont do this it was only an example)) or just waiting for source and recompiling the drivers to cover more internal revisions of the chip. im guessing that since froyo is still "private beta" that the gps problems will persist, but since everyone seems to believe that di18 had solved it for all, it's hard to say. if you're unhappy with the phone because you feel left behind i dunno what to say except, did you really expect to get more than just a great hardware device and a phone network? We all bought this one above all else because of what it was not what it could become.
I enjoy this phone more and more everyday. I switched over from tmobile and I had the g1 with them and then the motorola cliq, they both worked fine when I 1st got them but being on the tmobile network was a pain, they always had problems(so I'm glad I ditced them after 5 yrs of service.)
Now as for the epic, its way faster then my other 2 android phones from tmobile and it let's me do more, I'm also in NYC and I've notice that 4g only works for me when I'm in the city. When I head home (brooklyn) it just doesn't stay connected to the 4g service so ill agree with you there. The other thing that I don't like is the keyboard and its lag, other then those two things I can deal with this phone, its quite fast and screen is freaking beautiful!
P.S: battery problem is a common for android phones so I don't include that in my dislikes.
- Its just going to be Epic!
I would say I like this phone the exact amount as the day I got it, which is a lot. I would say I like android more and more each day as I find new more useful apps.
As far as the phone is concerned I live and work very close to major freeways so 4g reception is terrific in my workplace and in my home, in fact it is better than 3g in both places. A downside for me is that this phone seems to have worse reception than my old tp2 but it has never really been to much of an issue. The battery has never been a problem for me, I can make it run out in a few hours if I really wanted but last weekend I was sick on the couch the whole holiday and my phone made it 40+ hours chillin beside me since i didn't really use it much. The keyboard is no touch pro 2 but I still prefer it over the screen for typing long emails and now that i have a GAMEGRIPPER i play emulators quite a bit. I do still need to shave down some of the gamegrippers buttons but i digress. Overall I am very satisfied and I hope that there are developers out there who will make stuff targeted at more powerful phones like ours.
edit: sorry the screenshot is kinda weird but it is still readable and my screen was only on for 62 min.
I suppose that there are more things to hate right now.
Battery life needs improvement. Hate.
My phone recently overheated and shut down. Hate.
Ran out of room for apps. Hate.
Pen-tile and poor whites. Hate.
GPS is worthless. Hate.
Very responsive. Like.
Boots up pretty quickly. Like.
Looks different than other phones. Like.
Keyboard - not sure. I actually want a 5-row keyboard, but I want one like the HTC Touch Pro 2; this layout isn't that great.

Ok.. this thread is not as boring as the other ones.. I agree with the above,
there is so much to like about the phone. If you don't like it.. get a phone that suits you.
Nah, my phone is really cool I totally dig it. About the only thing I dislike is the fact that the battery doesn't last very long.
About the keyboard.. its funny, I do a lot of typing through swype, like at least 80% or so. Sometimes I think I could have gotten away without a physical keyboard, then I go to type some non-dictionary word or url or something and it's just easier to flip out the physical keyboard than it is to fight with the on screen keyboard. I think of it like that old saying about guns.. "Better the have one and not need it than to need one and not have it."
edit: getting froyo on my phone was pretty easy. I'm marginally technically inclined and it wasn't any harder than installing/configuring an OS on a desktop (I guess technically it is exactly that) It took about a few hours of research and a couple retries to sort all the kinks out but it's very smooth now.
still bitter about that battery tho..
oh yea not receiving 4G service in San Pedro yet still paying extra for 4G is lame..
Please have all general discussions about the new Evo Shift here
Speaking in general, I can't wait to get mine!
I am absolutely loving mine. Hope you get yours soon!
This is a phenomenal upgrade from the Hero. I'm really pleased with the phone, again another polished device from HTC.
Eagerly awaiting root and gingerbread!

I love the keyboard which reminds me of the G1's. The dpad is a physical button and to be honest I have not used it that much.
I didn't really think that I missed having a keyboard, but man it has been a pleasure to have this one at the ready.

when using advanced task killer, how much memory do you guys usually have? i'm sitting at around 140MB but right after i reboot the phone and kill apps i got to 190MB. my evo was around 230MB after reboot and around 170MB after running for a while.
you think custom roms will help memory management and get all this crap off here? i thought the evo and the shift had the same amount of RAM (512mb)...
but man did i miss my keyboard. went to the evo, yelled at my phone for the keyboard probably 50 times a day, raised blood pressure im sure... now i got the physical keyboard, no guessing now.
the only thing I miss is the Evo screen size, but I am very very very happy with this phone. I can't stop playing with it. Gameboid with real buttons as controls makes it so much easier to play FFVI :-D I can't wait to overclock the snot out of this thing.
In stock?
If I haven't pre-ordered at this point, is it realistic for me to be able to find somewhere with this in stock tomorrow morning?
Another thing the Shift has also is the New Flip Clock. Although, I do know you can flash it on the Evo. However, you have to be rooted in order to it.
Yeah I picked mine up from radio shack two days ago for $150. Hell I was the first one the store sold and I went in at like 7pm. The reps didn't even know they had the phone on display yet.
yep, just walked into bby and came out with one 15min later...

Edit: I had a question here, but I found an answer to it elsewhere. Be back later probably.
you can use PDAnet for now. It's a pay app, but you can use it free. Free version doesn't do secure sites. I'm gonna use it till I get rooted.

As soon as I got my TP2 I flashed the rom over to MightyRom, and I used the Internet Sharing it had to tether to my laptop and that worked fine with my current Sprint plan.
Now I got the Shift with the stock rom and it is saying that I need to buy an additional $30 a month add on to my plan in order to tether to my laptop...
Anyone know a way to get around this with an app or a rom?

Its was launched just today but has been available at radioshack and bb for a couple of days. The only way for tethering would be to root it and then use a custom rom. That is what I know imho.
Does anyone know if there every going to create the droid x multi touch keyboard for this phone...Yes this does have a physical keyboard but sometimes i like to type on screen, and that was my favorite keyboard on the OG Evo

I know you can do temporary root with "Zroot" and i think I read that the wifi tethering app also works after you use Zroot.

Well, only if you have 4g coverage, but still... As a Verizon customer all my life I have never been able to do this. Just think of the possibilities that we have now... I can talk to friends AND look at online porn at the same time
EDIT: don't know why i put this in Incredible section, should be in Thunderbolt section... oh well, a lot of us will probably be upgrading to it anyway

That's cool. 4G for data, 3G for voice. I don't know if that would be a huge deal though.

I doubt I'll get 4G for a while where I am, so I guess I'll have to live with 3G + WiFi for my voice + data needs.

Most people probably wont use this feature. Its just something ATT could gloat about for awhile, but really who needs to browse the net while talking that much where its a significant feature.
When I was on T-Mobile with the Nexus One, I actually did use voice and data a few times when the girlfriend was lost (shocker) and needed me to pull up Maps to help her out. It has been slightly frustrating on Verizon to have to hang up and call her back. It'll be nice to have that option again.
I doubt many ppl are gonna upgrade, doesnt really have many
new features. No hdmi, what a joke, epic fail.

You're right. Other than a new 45nm processor, four times faster GPU, 50% more RAM, LTE, Dolby Surround, noise cancelling mics, new HTC Sense, DLNA, wireless N, Bluetooth EDR, and front facing camera, there isn't much the Thunderbolt has over the Incredible.

Maps will work on verizon while you are on the phone. Well it continues to work if you already have choosen a destination, don't know if it would still work if I just wanted to look up directions.

Dolby? really? who the f cares? new sense isnt that much different, its already been leaked and am already using the features, so meh again. I already have wireless N, so meh again. Dont need the Ram, so meh. Noise cancelling mics? cmon dude.
Wow man. enjoy your new toy. Other than screen size sounds like a waste. I figured no HDMI would make my case but I guess I had to go there. Sorry to kill ur topic, i didnt mean it.

Exactly, only purpose i could see (before DLNA was confirmed anyway) would have been the ability to share your videos via HDMI, so if you went to a friends/family members house and wanted to show your camcorder videos you could via HDMI, it would be as simply as a connection to the TV via the HDMI cable.
But now that mirroring has been unveiled by LG on there Optimus line of phones, Optimus 2X and Revolution, it might be a cool and all to see your games and UI on a big screen tv, but not really necessary since theres DLNA on board and most TV's anymore that are flatscreen or HD have it built in especially with the rise of internet capable tv's like my Samsung 52"
DLNA works great on the new sense and i love how its two way where you can control the content via the phone to the TV or from the PC to the phone and vice versa.
to the TV you can use the phone as the remote, control the playback, pause it turn the volume up and down and all that, just like a boxee minus the TV controls anyway lol
i can't wait till this phone launches, i love the new sense and its ability to have skins and the other features like Locations and Navigation by TomTom (it was confirmed after it launched on the Desire HD that TomTom was the maps/navigation provider)
if you look at all the options we have on this handset, it might not be a dual core phone but its definitely worth an upgrade from the Incredible, which reminds me
if Verizon does it the way i think they are, and launch after the 22nd, all the Original launch day Incredible owners would be eligible to upgrade to the ThunderBolt (assuming they got a 1 year contract, which i always get so i don't get burned when a new handset arrives the year after).
but it kinda makes sense,
launch the successor to a phone like the Incredible right after the time they become eligible to upgrade during there 1 year agreement, if i recall, they did this with the launch of the Droid X for the OGD owners, so timing really is everything.

Let's not forget, ATT gloated about it as if it were an ATT feature and not a complete accident by way of the network technology they used. Back when I was on T-Mobile I met more than a few people who didn't believe they could do it too.

The six years I was on Cingular, AT&T and T-Mobile, I never used the data + voice feature. I have had to give my girlfriend directions the other day and I just said, let me call you right back, I pulled it up on maps and called right back.
lol... it's not that grand.
I for one honestly don't care about HDMI out. Like someone else stated above, I will leave HD to my PC and TV.

True. I had a BB Curve, and being on the phone trying to pull up the Browser/Google Maps to get directions or anything was slower than hell...much easier just to look up and call back, you are correct there!
I am 42 yrs so for me a bigger screen without the cumbersome height of a droid x is worth considering. New sense is truly awesome too (now that I have played on the Z/HD ports) and the extra features are welcome. However, currently the Incredible is a truly open platform to us and we have no idea what HTC will do or be forced to do on the thunderbolt's bootloader. What if they go the motorola way?
As you can see from my sig I am a rom slut/whore/whatever is the male equivalent. I worry that HTC will make it harder for us to root the thunderbolt and that alone will be enough for me to rule out that phone. So I will seriously consider it only if I find out that it can be nand unlocked. Until then, no point switching from the inc to a phone that cant be modded and to be locked down into whatever the carrier allows me to do. That would be a bad trade. Plus LTE towers will only slowly be percolating across the country. I do not believe LTE will be widely available everywhere we are immediately. Why not wait a bit before paying for LTE service? Believe me, it will cost you more.
I also did not like the small battery. What if the energy utilization efficiencies are only marginal? That would not be good. The included 32gb micro sdhc card is worth some $ but think about this - why did they think they had to throw a free 32gb card in?
Another thing that concerns me is that while this phone might have better specs than the inc, it is not dual core (seems six months on every phone will be dual core) so is this a significant upgrade to the inc? I dont know. Early adopters may have a better toy only for a short period of time. The initial tech curve is always very steep.
My 2 cents
I got this phone on launch. Had the EVO and Hero previously. Had to return one, my fault for partitioning and not backing up before hand.
Running CM7 stock kernel and I am not looking back. It's faster, lighter and the screen is just amazing. I would like to have an LED notifier and HDMI out but I can deal with that.
Anyone in the same boat wondering if you should switch, do it! You will not regret it.
Cheers.
nope got rid of mine on saturday. got an evo until the 3d or galaxy s 2 comes. too many radio issues.

Very few products launch with zero glitches. It always takes a few months before everything gets ironed out. Even the all mighty iPhone suffers from this. Besides in my area the service is identical to my other sprint android phone, the epic. Its almost certainly a flawed prl as it seems to only effect certain people in certain areas and will surely be fixed.
You cant always expect perfection when being an early adopter.

It doesn't matter where I am in the Metro, I'm getting spotty signal. Do you think I should switch it out? This one is actually my second, as the first one couldn't stay on 4G even in coverage areas. In the best buy in Ridgedale it would get signal and drop before the sales rep could even walk it out of the store, so he exchanged it for me. Maybe I'll have luck the third time.

I love the phone, but I'm on my second one and still having radio issues. I can't hold a wifi signal unless I'm right in front of the router and 3G signal is low and fluctuates like crazy. I'm going back to an Evo tomorrow since BB has them for $50 so the extra loot in my pocket won't hurt either.
I got a second one because it's really a killer phone, but I'm afraid I'm gonna be stuck with a crappy radio for months and I'm not willing to do that.

I have done PRL updates and it didn't seem to make a difference. I know this is xda, but I don't think I should have to flash roms for the phone to work (although I really appreciate the devs and members here a ton).
Data speeds are better on the EVO 4G sitting next to my NS4G on every speedtest available including the Speakeasy website. When I go to the other room I can't hold a solid wifi signal and the EVO works great even on another floor. I know the EVO GB update has a couple of bugs, but I feel that they will be taken care of quickly by HTC and Sprint.

I'm not flaming or trolling fix. I do have an honest question that isn't meant to try and piss you off. Since your not liking this phone and deciding to return it, how come you still hang around in this section and contribute to discussions? I could guess why all day but I thought I'd just ask. Like I said, i'm not trying to start anything with you, I was just wondering.
About the topic now. At first, I was very leery of getting burned again by samsung. I read the reviews and played with one briefly at bb and wasn't impressed. I was, when I bought it, I was experiencing my usual impulsive buying itch. I tried 4g the same day and was very disappointed with the results.
Through time, it started to grow on me. I liked the unbranded and lack of bloat and spyware and vanilla ui experience. I thought lacking a notification led would suck big time until I ran across noled. The speaker is a little quiet but a little boost from voodoo sound and volume+ helped. Yeah the radios are kinda deaf but in waiting for maybe a patch for that some time soon. I thought that having a limited video camera resolution would suck until I used it and saw it wasn't low framerate blurry vision like all my other phones. People said it takes forever to charge. Imo, nothing was as slow to charge than the epic. Charging isn't really slow either.
Most of the reported negatives, before I bought it, I have found solutions or work arounds. There's a few things that need to be taken care of with future patches, but it's nice to have the latest and most up to date and pretty stable os around. For the first time, i'm not anxiously waiting for the new evo. Mainly because I don't like sense and I'm spoiled with getting the updates before the other phones.
