I've had my AT&T 3g Nexus One since July and loved it..... But, now i'm just becoming frustrated with it. I have been getting constant lags and freezes with it ever since the more recent Froyo updates (or maybe thats just when Ive been noticing it, I never used it with éclair). I'm running stock with launcher pro if that has anything to do with it, but the stock launcher seems so much more buggy. The screen also isnt very responsive and the buttons can be annoying at times. I'm having random moments where the touch screen goes all crazy and I can press the back button, menu button, home, etc all in the middle of the screen as well. I've been contemplating making the switch to a Desire or Captivate if Gingerbread doesn't help or fix these issues? I really don't want to make a switch because, i've spent over $125 in cases for it and definitely wont make or match my money...
Dont do it. At least not for the desire as its pretty much the same phone and even has the same pentile AMOLED, and the captivate has slow updates and community is nowhere near the N1s. If you are running stock then use your warranty and get the touch screen fixed.
i sold my brand new desire and frantically searched for a att nexus one lol. where were you last week!? hah.

Speed issues on a Nexus are software problems 99% of the time. Just root the phone and install a fast rom like CM 6 and it will be good as new.
Also btw, how are you on AT&T in London?

unlock, root, and put CM 6.1 RC1 on it. use ADW instead of lpro. format your sdcard, clear caches, and enjoy the speed again.
or
sell it and get an iphone. or wp7. or whatever. just get whatcha like.

I also have the ATT n1. Since day one I had the phone rooted, unlock bootloader and fresh copy of the cm6. I never notice lag or reboot. My phone runs like butter. As long as you know what your doing, you should not have any problem with your n1. Even release of new nexus s I don't think I will replace it. I am just not really into Samsung. Prob hold out for HTC android phone.

It's been fun, but I'm saying good-bye to my HD2.
The lag and crashing issues aren't THAT bad (excluding the texting program) but it's just inconvenient. A phone shouldn't have any of these issues, right?? And its nice that you can try different ROMs to find better performance but you shouldn't have to search for an alternative such as that after receiving your $450 brand new phone (I regret paying the full retail price so bad. I shouldn't have bought into the hype).
And for those of you claiming to have ZERO problems with your stock TMOUS HD2's running default ROMs, I question what your definitions of "problem" and "inconvenience" are, along with your perception of lag and ability to notice it. But if our perception to lag and detail is the same and you actually don't have any problems then you are very lucky.
Things I love: Browsing, Sense minus texting, Screen, Office Mobile, Camera
Things I hate: Texting, crashes, drop of 3G (probably more of T-Mobile's fault), lack of Apps compared to the droid and apple platforms.
To be honest, if I didn't text so much, I'd probably keep the phone.
Once again, it's been fun and this forum has been VERY helpful in my quest to fix the phone. Everyone is nice and overall very well informed. Thanks!
-Alex
PS, if anyone has some secret solution to this problem(s) other than trying the latest 2.13 ROM from T-mobile (which I have already tried), I'd be willing to keep the phone!

have you updated to the latest rom? texting has greatly improved IMHO. that was also my major concern with this phone prior to the update.
I agree with you to a certain extent, Alex. But I am more of a tinkerer to find solutions to the problems. If there weren't ANY problems with the phone, I would get rid of it!!!!
As far as texting... have you tried Swype? I came from a hardware-keyboard phone myself, and hated trying to text with the onscreen keyboard. But after getting used to Swype, I can say that I am MUCH happier.
With all that said... I'll give you $100 for your phone!!!!
I'll go to 105.
Alex,
If you bought a car, and a few months later the manufacturer announces they have a modification they can do to the car that will address certain issues, including one that you're experiencing (let's assume something other than critical safety issues)....do you return the car, or let them apply the modification?
It's the same idea with the new tmo ROM...it's an official update that you should try, especially with your SMS issues. No product is perfect out of the gate, and an official update like this is the only real way for them to try to fix issues from the factory. If you like the phone other than those reasons you listed, it seems silly to walk away from it already without even giving that a try.
Sorry that I didn't make it clear but I'm running the 2.13 right now. Texting is a little better but still laggy. And I should probably give swype a try before writing it off. We will see. Thanks guys

Alex, what phone are you gonna switch to?
Software Vs. Hardware
I really don't have any major problems with anything on the stock rom. No lags or nothing. That being said, if I experienced any issues my first response would be to find out if its hardware or software related.
In my mind, you can solve every single software related issues and I really love the HD2 hardware so there is no way I will ever return mine just because I face some software issues. And this is the great thing about WM, you can actually tweak it to function the way you want.
I must say that this is not the phone for someone who wants it work out of the box. I mean it works but you really need to know what you are doing. Regarding the apps, WM has far more apps then any mobile os out there, you cannot just compare the marketplace apps. Its WM, you have to know what you are getting into before you buy a phone.

Yes I would definitely give swype a try, once you use it, it's a whole different touch-typing experience.
The only other thing I'd ask is how often you clear out text messages on your phone? I think that 99% of the SMS freezing is due to too many text messages in the client at once. I clean mine out once a day at least, more if I'm texting a lot that day. I simply run a quick myphone backup to save them off-phone, and then I wipe out any threads I'm not currently conversing in (including clearing the deleted items folder). I never have any SMS freezing, even on the original (2.10) tmo ROM I'm still running.

I'm testing out swype. I don't like it for the moment but I think its just because I'm not used to it. Gonna keep messing with it. As for clearing messages, I try not to let mine exceed 50. I wish I never had SMS freezing. I had less freezing on Kumar's classic 1.6 though

Until you can show me this, I will still consider WM phones to be a NON-app instensive platform. Yes, they have all the apps you could need to do anything with, but they don't have all the apps you WANT.

I have to agree with you 100%, I am coming of of a Nokia E51 which for a three year old phone has more basic, logical features which I though every phone would have.
The sms lagg is horrible and I experience all the time, or the fact that we cant keep the hom page looking the way it does and turn off the active weather. It lags the crap out of th phone if u just go to move screens or find something and its showing you clouds for 19 seconds scrolling by..
you cannot uninstal the useless applications that came with it without whiping the entire phone.
The new update is fine and dandy, but It clears the whole phone, so eveyr thign I have installed and set i have to redo just to get an upgrade, totaly idiotic in my mind. If its a OS update, then it should only effect the OS backround files not reset the total system.
Backing up contact. Sims only store 250 contact. I have over 300 so I have many on my phone it self, to copy the entire phone book to memory card, i have to do it one by one. Yes I know I can instal an app for it, but should I really have to? thats should be a basic app. Syncing with your computer, requires you to have email set up in outlook, I dont use out look, so I have to go through all that troube just to get that done.
In my house, my nokia has full signal at all times, with this new bad boy phone i barly get one bar if I am lucky.
Just simple little things which should be an automacit features on phones are missing here. I dont get the thinking behind that.
To the person who did the car analogy. Would you buy a expensive car if you had to install the breaks you self after purchase.. Oh you want a rear veiw mirror? here is a mirror, and some glue go have fun? no you would not, you would expect all functions to be there.
The phone doesnt even allow you to control how you view your contacts for crying out loud, I had to D/L an app to set if i want to view first name/ last name, vs the default last name first name. That is just bad.
Out side of a big shiny screen that eats ur batery life in one day and the camera.. nothing special.
just my two cents
rysky007, I agree with you for the most part
Would you buy a car knowing that it does not come with certain features or does not perform the way you want it to? Or do you just buy any car expecting all of them to come with features just because a car of another brand had them? There is a reason why it's better to lease a BMW than buying it.
It seems like you're the average joe that bought into the hype not knowing what Windows Mobile is.
Don't come crying just because the phone was not what you expected it to be. Do your homework next time before making a purchase.

A better analogy is you are buying a stock BMW and expecting it to drive like a F1 race car. Fact is, you have to add certain available add-ons to make it into a M5-ish car with the type of race tires you want and the suspension your driving habits need.

Hell yes it does
The Moment really sucks. Check the Sprint community forums at their official website, there's a known issue with the Moment experiencing fake-airplane/CDMA modem lock ups. The only way to get the connection back when it happens is to shut the phone down and turn it back on. I went through six Moments. The last time I swapped it, I just hung out at the bookstore next door until the data connection would break, then take it back over there so they could vainly try to fix it, then replace it with another Moment; rinse and repeat until they finally agreed to give me a Hero like I asked when I first walked into the store. When I went in last time, they said that if I had came in in May, and not June (the third in this case), they could've swapped it then with the hero (said something about swapping for a different device if there are so many swaps within a 6 month period). PITFA.
Anyway, I have my Hero now, and it works wonderfully, and has way better battery life than the moment. -AND- multitouch works on the Hero, which it won't on the Moment, even with the 2.1 update... I'm never buying Samsung ever again.
yeah you should definitely just go back to the Hero

Thanks. Also I love the keypad. Didn't realise how much I missed it when using my Evo.

when using advanced task killer, how much memory do you guys usually have? i'm sitting at around 140MB but right after i reboot the phone and kill apps i got to 190MB. my evo was around 230MB after reboot and around 170MB after running for a while.
you think custom roms will help memory management and get all this crap off here? i thought the evo and the shift had the same amount of RAM (512mb)...
but man did i miss my keyboard. went to the evo, yelled at my phone for the keyboard probably 50 times a day, raised blood pressure im sure... now i got the physical keyboard, no guessing now.
the only thing I miss is the Evo screen size, but I am very very very happy with this phone. I can't stop playing with it. Gameboid with real buttons as controls makes it so much easier to play FFVI :-D I can't wait to overclock the snot out of this thing.
In stock?
If I haven't pre-ordered at this point, is it realistic for me to be able to find somewhere with this in stock tomorrow morning?
Another thing the Shift has also is the New Flip Clock. Although, I do know you can flash it on the Evo. However, you have to be rooted in order to it.
Yeah I picked mine up from radio shack two days ago for $150. Hell I was the first one the store sold and I went in at like 7pm. The reps didn't even know they had the phone on display yet.
yep, just walked into bby and came out with one 15min later...

I just picked mine up. I upgraded from a HTC Touch Pro 2.
Edit: I had a question here, but I found an answer to it elsewhere. Be back later probably.
you can use PDAnet for now. It's a pay app, but you can use it free. Free version doesn't do secure sites. I'm gonna use it till I get rooted.

As soon as I got my TP2 I flashed the rom over to MightyRom, and I used the Internet Sharing it had to tether to my laptop and that worked fine with my current Sprint plan.
Now I got the Shift with the stock rom and it is saying that I need to buy an additional $30 a month add on to my plan in order to tether to my laptop...
Anyone know a way to get around this with an app or a rom?

Its was launched just today but has been available at radioshack and bb for a couple of days. The only way for tethering would be to root it and then use a custom rom. That is what I know imho.
Does anyone know if there every going to create the droid x multi touch keyboard for this phone...Yes this does have a physical keyboard but sometimes i like to type on screen, and that was my favorite keyboard on the OG Evo

I know you can do temporary root with "Zroot" and i think I read that the wifi tethering app also works after you use Zroot.
My arc is terrible. Constant force closes, it lags up, RAM is a huge issue for me, and I'm not sure why.
I've had previous Android phones, I had the Galaxy S and I have a galaxy Tab and I've never experienced this issues before, and I'm not sure whats causing it.
I have quite a lot of applications installed (not a huge amount).
Facebook for instance takes up to 2 minutes to load, including 3 or 4 attempts at force closing.
I'm running .181 with gingerbreak root. The only thing I can think of is reflashing the firmware.
Also having huge battery drain issues. Today it lasted from 8.30am until 5pm. Which isn't very good. Thats with about 2 hours music, 2 hours intensive use and frequent texting, no calls.
Anybody have any solutions?
Many thanks, Ben.
Did you factory reset?
Sent from my Arc using XDA premium App
try reinstalling the firmware, if not get it exchanged, my arc is really smooth and fast, so must be somethign wrong with just yours
Sounds like some app fukked your phone up, reflash

Thats what I'm thinking, I'm not sure which it is. I only download apps from reputable sources.
I was hoping to do it without a factory reset or reflash, but thats definitely the way to go I think.
It was buttery smooth when I first got it, it was brilliant.
I do wish I waited a month for the Galaxy S II though
Arc's resale value is sh#t as well, its not even worth selling
Have you tried a complete SEUS repair, as that often fixes these sort of problems.
Haven't got round to install SUES yet, what does the repair tool do?

Its basically a completely flesh install of the phone, so it will not retain any data in the process.
"blah blah blah I hate the phone, **** resale value, should've waited for another phone"
Instead of immediately using common sense, reflashing the phone, you come here and complain ? deal-with-it.jpg tbh
Also I could resell my phone at about 480euros if I wanted, which is pretty good considering I paid 500 for it.

Don't get me wrong, I love the phone and its by far the best looking Android phone out IMO, which is one of the main reasons I bought it, along with the camera. I know I was buying "last gen" hardware. I just didn't expect this to happen. I've seen a few people with very similar issue, I'm wondering whether its because its running 2.3.2 and it needs a few minor updates to work out the glitches.
A phone shouldn't need reflashing. If I was a noob user, who knew nothing of XDA, and Android inner workings, I would immediately assume the phone was **** and send it back.
And In the UK, the price on eBay at the moment is around the £300 mark, £100 less than I bought it for.
Sorry if I sounded rude, but there's about a dozen of such threads popping weekly.
If you were a noob user, why would you even buy a high-end device ( Arc is not last-gen, the only thing that is inferior is it's CPU when compared to Galaxy S2 ), and an Android at that ?
The less tech-savvy people usually go for iPhone, which is in my opinion, the best choice for a person which isn't familliar with more advanced systems ( not saying Android is complex for normal user, far from it ).
I guess my opinion could easily be derived from the fact that if I had such experiences with my phone, I'd immediately reflash and solve the problem without any moaning, but that's just me

I have more friends on Android than iPhone, most of them can barely use a computer as well. Google (along with the handset makers) need to iron out this sort of thing.
Also, I don't have time to reflash, it can be a long process as I don't make regular backups. Backing up will take an hour in all, then I have to flash, reinstall my apps and SMS which is a pain.
I'll have to do this at the weekend I think. I need to update to .184 anyway.
Ive rooted and reflashed my arc twice since getting it a few weeks ago. Its really no big deal and it doesnt take too long. Even an iphone requires a reflash from time to time.

mybackup pro..... or if you want to try something that doesn't involve a complete fresh start.. use flashtool to reflash the newly release o2 2.3.3 firmware and uncheck the "wipe user data" box... just replaces the system image...

Everyone has to start somewhere.
And SE are not marketing the Arc towards techie enthusiasts, it's aimed at the mass market, which will include plenty of 'noobs'.

Yes. If you do not like it sell it and get something you like. Not worth resale value? Give it away as a gift to someone you like. Don't have time to reflash? Why? How long do you think that takes? I'd say about 5 minutes max. Get rid of the phone and stop whining. Move on. Simple!
So, I'll be picking up my Evo Design 4G bright and early Sunday morning I'll let you know how it goes and what I think after I've had it for a couple hours.
I've been waiting a while for a smaller version of the Evo to hit sprint... and now the wait is OVER
Just read about this on Engadget, looks like its going to be a pretty good phone. Might even pick one up off contact.

so this thing doesn't have a dual-core processor right?
No, it's still single core, but I'm not THAT hardcore on my phone anyway.. with what I do with my phones, once I find the right rom and kernel combo I'm smooth sailing. I've got two upgrades in the waiting so I'm going to use one on this phone. I just want it for the smaller frame. Personally I think 4.0" is perfect. These new 4.5, and 4.7" screens coming out, might as well have a damn tablet pressed to your face
The global roaming capabilities seems interesting as well. I wonder how well that will work in gsm areas around me.

Why not just get a 3D?
Whooo! (Cole Voice...)
A little more ram and a extra 200mhz on the CPU PLUS a smaller screen. Whats the point in buying it?
Seems like a waste of time and money.

I want a smaller phone, that's my deal.. I'm sure I'll get the itch for better processing but I'll wait till mid next year and use my other upgrade for an LTE phone when its all up and running.

I'm just tired of carrying a brick around in my pants for now.. I'll root it, OC it to 1.5, rom, kernel, and it will be just perfect for me

I suspect that it will be as Sprint handled the GSM roaming on the TP2... i.e. it will not work on GSM in the US. The TP2 was SIM locked to only allow the GSM to work outside of the US.

Yea, man. If I did a lot of international travel I could see myself buying this phone.
I was reaaaally digging this phone when I first read about it and looked at the video on it by wirefly.
Im still luggin my tp2 around, but its just about had it, it freezes after every text, sometimes it even restarts
And thats bad since I get like.... upwards of 300 texts a day
in anycase.
When I compared the tp2 and the design side by side.. the screens width is almost exactly the same.
its just taller.
When compared side by side with the 3d.. it lags a bit when doing the caruswheel and unlocking.
But aside from all that it looked amazing.
the screen is very pretty and I love the design of it.. smooth and hints of curves.
The main thing killing it for the 3d is the design of it. Its suck a brick.. sharp edges.. and that cam buttun just jumps out into everyones buisness lol
That being said.. Im rally torn between the 2.
When Im in austin tomorrow Im going to have to check it out again cause the one here in ft hood was a little glitch. it doesnt even auto rotate or light up the notifications led.
OH and day one while I was playing with it, (since it didnt rotate) I checked for updates and It already has a softwear update LMAO
Why not get the Nexus S 4g? Its 4" and a great phone.

My gf has that phone.. she has alot of issues with it.
That and the release version has a bug where you cant send any text over the 160 charicter limit
3rd party apps dont help because even tho it lets her pass the charicter limit and 'chain' the messages like everyother phone does.. her phone will only send a "@" symble instead of the message everytime she passes the 160 limit of the phone.
And I text alot and send texts up to 400 charicters all the time.
So that wouldnt work for me
And as far as I can tell there wont be an official update for some time
I was thinking about getting the galexsy s ii epic 4g touch.. but dont really like the interface or the size. Its a tad too big in my opinion

No update any time soon? ICS will likely hit the NS4G not too soon after the Galaxy Nexus is released. Probably early to mid December. The SMS issue is easily solved by integrating with Google Voice. SMSing is about million times better with GV than with anything else you'd try. Back up, online management, and now MMS support.
If you look hard enough a new/new-ish NS4G can be had for $200 on ebay. Not bad for a soon to be ICS, WiMax, and Google Wallet capable phone. I'm upgrading to the Galaxy Nexus if it comes to Sprint but I wouldn't have a single problem holding on to it for another couple of months if it doesn't.

anyway, the guys at the sprint store are saying the galexy nexus is set to his around november 15thish
As far as the nexus s 4g, I can get it for like 50 bucks from sprint cause of my sero upgrade price.
but her phones already running 2.3.7 and she has the texting issue, her phone freezes and restarts all the time, and she looses data randomly.
and its not just hers, her sister has the same phone with the same problems
I decided against the evo design. 100% no after looking at it at another storeyesturday, it only plays the left channel of any audio, I loaded multiple music videos on youtube of songs I normally listen to and I was only getting have the sounds out of the phones speaker.
