I sometimes use wired and WIFI tethering from my focus when my internet goes out. Well today I got an email stating that I have to change my unlimited data plan to a tethering plan with 4gb of data if I want to continue tethering. If I continue without changing the plan it states they will change it without my consent. Now none of this crap makes sense, I have an unlimited plan so I should be able to chose what I want to use it for. I was wondering is there a way for ATT not to know I'm tethering from my phone?

Oh and here's how much data I used last month 804.27 MB.
I just got this email too, as well as a text saying i'm in the top 5% of data users and they'll start throttling my speed for the rest of the month whenever I get to 5%. Yes I do tether, and I don't really want to stop. If there was an option to add just a tethering feature to my account I would consider it, but the only option is to downgrade from my unlimited data plan to a 4GB plan that would allow tethering. Pretty damn lame.
Does anyone know how they know you're tethering? I've used wired tethering since I got my Focus in January and never had an issue. I tried the wifi hotspot option for maybe half an hour, which was a couple weeks ago when that hack first became available. I know the iPhone users who were using wifi hotspot app were getting caught a couple months ago. I'm just trying to figure out if it makes any difference if I use it wired or hotspot? Is wired safer or can they just tell either way? It's also speculated they check browser user agent strings, which could be spoofed though. So is there any way to get around this and continue tethering?
I am going through the same thing on my captivate with GB rom on it. The problem (based on the research i have been able to do) is that the phone uses a different APN to connect to Att's network when tethering. I am trying to find a hack or a mod that would use the same APN as the phone... but I am having no luck.

iPhone users that were using the MyWi app were getting the same message about tethering. The developers of MyWi said this on twitter:
"MyWi has always used the primary APN (the same as Safari/Mail/etc). All data is on one connection."
So it must be more than the APN.

And I'm currently over 10gb for the current billing cycle which ends in a few days.
AT&T can tell if you're tethering by analyzing packet data. Mobile devices and desktop/laptop computers can be easily distingueshed.
I got the ssame message today and i used only 200mb from my unkimited data plan on my focus this month so far, and in avergae below 2gb monthly. Funny part, no where in their agreement they mention that they will sniff your data packets, which they seem to do lately. There is no other way for them to know what are you doing with your phone, the internet sharing uses exactly the same APN on these phones. I replied to the message with a pure "F..CK OFF" and guess what, you get right away a reply saying that I opted out of their marketing text messaging. All they do at this time, unless you use gigs of data they just send advertisment spam text to all smartphone users to get them on tethering plans, they don't have any real proof of anything at this time if you do or not tethering. You can call them and they will tell you the same thing. I just did that too.
I did the same thing, I kept demanding to see the evidence against me and she said it belongs to ATT lol. SO back to the original question. Has anyone found a way to make them not know we're tethering?
You should read this, and also understand that if they start doing packet analysis, they will find out you're tethering pretty easily.
You can test this easily by capturing all packets from a shared wireless adapter (for example with Connectify) yourselves.
Also, from what I read in AT&Ts Wireless Customer agreement, they can do whatever they want: "We may change any terms, conditions, rates, fees, expenses, or charges regarding your Services at any time". Also, the Acceptable Use Policy says: "However, AT&T may monitor content of any such materials as necessary to comply with applicable laws, regulations or other governmental or judicial requests; or to protect the AT&T network and its customers.".
Btw, I don't live in US and the above was pretty easy to find; it proves that people don't read their contracts. Calling them and asking for proof might work if they "guessed" now, but next time be sure they'll have something.
I'm done with ATT, I received the text message saying that they detected tethering and they automatically switched my unlimited data plan to the new $50/5GB with tethering. I switched yesterday to straight talk, and my Samsung Focus works exactly as before, now for only $45/month, unlimited everything.

For those that don't know what UMA is... and Yea I work for a Wireless Carrier and spelled Wireless wrong.. lol
UMA Overview
Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) technology provides access to GSM and GPRS mobile services over unlicensed spectrum technologies, including Bluetooth and 802.11. By deploying UMA technology, service providers can enable subscribers to roam and handover between cellular networks and public and private unlicensed wireless networks using dual-mode mobile handsets. With UMA, subscribers receive a consistent user experience for their mobile voice and data services as they transition between networks.
In order to promote the widespread adoption of UMA technology, a number of leading companies within the wireless industry have jointly developed a set of open specifications. These specifications are available through this Web site, and may be used by vendors and carriers of wireless communications systems and applications to develop and deploy interoperable solutions.
In addition to developing and maintaining the initial specifications, the participating companies are actively working with the 3GPP standards organization to use the specifications as the basis for the development of a formal standard.
How UMA Technology Works
1.A mobile subscriber with a UMA-enabled, dual-mode handset moves within range of an unlicensed wireless network to which the handset is allowed to connect
.
2.Upon connecting, the handset contacts the UMA Network Controller (UNC) over the broadband IP access network to be authenticated and authorized to access GSM voice and GPRS data services via the unlicensed wireless network.
3.If approved, the subscriber’s current location information stored in the core network is updated, and from that point on all mobile voice and data traffic is routed to the handset via the Unlicensed Mobile Access Network (UMAN) rather than the cellular radio access network (RAN).
4.ROAMING: When a UMA-enabled subscriber moves outside the range of an unlicensed wireless network to which they are connected, the UNC and handset facilitate roaming back to the licensed outdoor network. This roaming process is completely transparent to the subscriber.
5.HANDOVER: If a subscriber is on an active GSM voice call or GPRS data session when they come within range (or out of range) of an unlicensed wireless network, that voice call or data session can automatically handover between access networks with no discernable service interruption. Handovers are completely transparent to the subscriber.
Believe it or not I don't think your spamming!! I think this is good information to know. Developing and Hacking is the wrong place for it not matter what the excuse... But it is great information. I wish more carriers had this kind of technology.

Hi,
I was just wondering, since the Htc wildfire has not yer arrived in my country, is it possible for me to purchase an unlocked wildfire and use it without a data plan??
i am able to do so with my blackberry. I can make calls and even access the mobile internet on my blackberry without a data plan.
So, is it possible to do the same with a wildfire, even when rooted and on a custom rom??
Please help...!
Yes when you set it up it asks u if u want mobile network and WiFi or WiFi only

Thank you for replying..
So all i need to do is to choose the wifi only??
Isn't it possible to use a browser (like opera mini as i do on the blackberry) to bypass the mobile network restrictions?? Because in the blackberry, since i cannot use the phone's browser, i use opera mini to bypass the mobile network restrictions and i'm able to browse using the mobile network..
Kindly reply..
Someone do correct me if I'm wrong...
The only devices sold here with data plan are iPhone and BlackBerries. Others can be bought with/without contract which may or may not require additional data plan. You can use the phone with WiFi only option in which case you can browse and use applications which require network access free of charge. You can use the cell phone without data plan as well but it usually costs a fortune (at least here) to do so. You can turn on network connection and if your device if configured properly you'll be able to do everything you want. It would be the best to get at least the cheapest data plan if you're planning on using any features which require internet access.

you can but you will be charged (in the uk its £3 per MB). if you go down this or the data plan option, i would advise getting 3g watchdog due the the fact that the wildfire has 3g and can use the network to get more data than a 2g blackberry (most of them are 2g) in the space of 5 mins. the wildfire also has 2g (and you can get a data plan for the wildfire - i have one)
Yes, you can connect to the internet without data plan if your network settings are set correctly. However, I strongly advise you NOT to do it unless you have a data plan or are connecting through wi-fi at home/work. As brilldoctor said, it's the most expensive option and the data transfer is charged per 100 kB here (as far as I know). Do set your phone not to do automatic/background sync/update if you don't have a data plan. I used my phone for a week with wi-fi only option. So, I used it normally for phone calls/texting while away and it would automatically connect to my network and sync/update data when I got home. I also recommend you to get 3G Watchdog or Stats to monitor your usage. Do set a limit so you don't over do it.

Most certainly it is possible. You can buy both unlocked and use it on your deisired mobile operator. BlackBerries aren't usually used that way, but iPhone is. Many people get burned with Androids/iPhone due to fact they are net oriented and do some tasks in the background. They get them without data plan, check a few things out and think how cool it is and then they get a bill.
If you do go down the data plan route watch out for nasty fair usage policies (hint: 3g watchdog and apndroid)

First, a little bit about me that lead to how I came across this...
I work in the electronics department of a retail store, and when the days get slow I like to tether my G2 to the wifi enabled tv's and watch netflix with coworkers. I do this on almost a daily basis and burns through A LOT of data.
Of course after a few days I get the text message from T-Mobile after I get through my 5GB of (fake) unlimited data and will be slowed for the remainder of this billing cycle... This normally results in my downstream speeds going to a trickle of 7kb/s as apposed to my uncapped speeds of anywhere from 300kb/s to 1400kb/s.
So I have another job that I work on the days off sometimes and it's running deliveries. I use the navigation app to get to where ever it may be for work and sometimes my GPS doesn't like to locate me right away. When this happens at work, I start to panic (I don't know my way around town for sh*t) and try every solution on hand I can think of. I tried fixing permissions then network operator selections and eventually the GPS will locate me function just fine.
So I have never hit my cap while working my part time job doing deliveries, and have never really used the navigation app until I started working there and this is how I came across this uncapping of my data while trying to fix my gps, I went into wireless & network settings, then mobile networks, and select network operators, it does some searching for a bit then gives me the option for AT&T or T-Mobile, (I always just do select automatically) and after doing this, my data speeds return to normal... like I am still getting downloads at 600kb/s+.
According to the T-mobile "my account" app, I am at 7.26GB for this month.
(I will upload screens in a second for the naysayers)
Something about this network operator selection thing has the ability to unthrottle me everytime I go over my data. Not sure what actually happens behind the screens when I do this method but just thought I'd share in hopes that it may provide some help to others in a possible loop hole to the (fake) unlimited data issue a lot of us run into.
P.S. Noticed that the speedtest app always thinks I'm in Dallas TX every time I do the network operator unthrottle thing, when I actually live in the Chicago IL area.
Wow, this seems like a great find. finally we can maintain full speed over the month. Gonna definitely give this a try once my speed gets throttled. Thanks!
Just for safe measures before people start saying it's not working, I'd like to just make it known that I am currently running on CyanogenMod-7.1.0-RC1-vision and using 2.6.35.13-UmaroV1.06+ kernel. Radio-26.03.02.26_M. Dunno if that affects anything in this department lol.
Also one thing I've noticed and forgot to mention...If I connect to a wifi network, once I have disconnected from it, my speeds are throttled again but doing the operator selection unthrottles it. This is the only thing I've noticed that reactivates the throttle but is still fixed in a matter of minutes.
Ill test this once I finish download battlefield 3 though I dont think Ill hit 5gb once done. Probably need another 1GB or so.
BTW to save data from navigating, you can enable a feature in Google Maps 'labs' to allow caching map data. After enabling it, long press on a location and tell it to cache, it'll then download a 10 square mile radius of that point and save it to your SDcard (you can cache multiple areas). Then it won't cost you data next time you load that map
Anyways, interesting find! I wonder if its because it kinda... re-registers your phone on the network, and you get a new address / spot on the network? Idk... I've only hit my 5gb once and I wasn't capped so I can't really check this often.
My guess is that Tmobile servers learned your usage statistic including your location, amount of data consumed, most connected APNs nearby and usage schedule. They then use those factors to throttle/filter the APN you are connected to the most. But once you "refresh" the apn list or the cache on your phone by searching for network operators, your phone is no longer "blacklisted"
But that is just my theory.

It just changes your ip on the network and will last for several hours or until you reboot. Its temporary but works good enough. Too bad my old one doesn't work anymore. Its all controlled server side now.

Yes, I'm on T-Mobile. But I'm on CM7 like you are, and CM7 already includes the app. Is downloading it from the market the only way to get it to work?

In the build.prop in /system, with any text editor, you just need to change this:
ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.brand=vision (or whatever it says here)
to this:
ro.product.model=T-Mobile G2
ro.product.brand=tmobile
That's it. Reboot and it'll work just fine. I change it every time I update ROMs on CM.
The way I understood this: Once Throttled simply navigate to network operator settings and select your standard operator or reset your apn settings and you will at least for a certain limited time have unthrottled data?
At least as far as Berlin, Germany, network operator O2 goes: I cannot confirm that this actually works. (HTC Desire Z, latest Bulletproof MIUI rom).

Mine works on CM7 without editing build.prop about 90% of the time. Kinda weird people seem to have different results.

That's what I've been doing and it works great. Might just be a loop in the T-Mobile networks but I thought I'd share in case it wasn't brought to anyone's attention
Just to be sure I went for the latest nightly and tried again.
Made sure that I got new ip's. But still nothing. I guess that o2 germany simply handles throttling differently.
Thanks for sharing though, would've been nice if it worked.

This didnt work for me. Im using MIUI Bulletproof ROM.
Although, right around the same time this thread was made, I went over the cap and still had full data speeds. It lasted 4-5 days I think.
I hit around 6.5 GB before I was finally throttled and that was around the end of Oct/beginning of Nov.
No root won't be a problem if there is a working hot spot app for us unlimited users.

FoxFi used to work with a VPN tunnel... but I don't know now. I use VZW as my ISP, so I pay for tethering.
All the phones I have had are rooted with hot spot carrier check bypass so not having a hot spot will be a no go on this phone.

No big need for an app, the turning on hot spot while signal refreshes method works.....Look up details in the Turbo2 forum.
I can get the signal refresher method to work, but the hotspot shortcut in the notification panel only turns it off for me. It will not turn it on. Any suggestions? I have to queue the hotspot settings then switch to activate from there.

I currently am working with the FCC and the EFF to address this
Below you can read my complaint. I have removed identifying information for the time being but have at this point escalated beyond the FCC. Last night I was contacted by the FCC and we discussed plans for next steps. They have forwarded my complaint to Verizon and I was contacted by Verizon Enterprise Resolutions Team. I spoke with VZW today and had a 45 minute conversation discussing their restriction on the fact that Verizon is treading very close to the 2012 ruling. At this point I am waiting to hear back from Crystal from Verizon's internal team on next steps.
VERIZON WIRELESS - 700MHZ C BLOCK RESTRICTING USERS ABILITY TO UTILIZE OPEN FREQUENCY
On Friday August 19th I purchased a new phone from Verizon Wireless. I was surprised to find out that the applications that I normally use to tether my wireless broadband no longer worked due to a combination of efforts set by Google to patch security holes and Verizon Wireless' modification of the stock rom that was shipped from Motorolla Mobility.
Verizon has modified the stock internal mobile broadband hook in settings and forced it to call a 'Subscription Check' service that requires end users to enroll in a 30$ a month mobile broadband service in addition to their current bill.
While the second part is not new, the first; disabling tethering applications, is.
In 2011 the Free Press filed a complaint with the FCC located here
freepress.net/sites/default/files/fp-legacy/FreePress_CBlock_Complaint.pdf
In this complaint it holds that Verizon Wireless choice and collusion with Google to disable or limit third party tethering apps steering users to their paid server is not only poor business practice but against the fair use of the C block LTE frequency and in the FCC's 2012 ruling found below, they agree.
transition.fcc.gov/Daily_Releases/Daily_Business/2012/db0731/DOC-315501A1.pdf
The settlement of 1.25 million against Verizon not only solidifies fault, but reinforces the necessity to keeping the use of this frequency open to competition for applications and use.
I feel that the current situation that I am facing also affect other end users and is simply a rehash of the 2011 issue.
I have contacted Verizon and have the recorded messages located here:
Call 1 -REMOVED-
Received email response listed here:
-REMOVED-
Call 2 -REMOVED-
Verizon Wireless HQ
Dispute Resolution manager
one Verizon way, VC52S417 Baskin Ridge NJ, 07920-1097
I am looking for advise primarily if I should pursue this issue, if I am off base or if this is something that the FCC has interest in pursuing.
Thanks very much

Method
This is put together from the droid turbo 2 thread. Works for me on unlimited data.
1. Download "Network Signal Refresher Lite By 8JAPPS"
2. Run the app, Hit the refresh button.
3. Pull down notification drawer, pull down again to get to the quick settings tiles
4. Wait until the Sim card icon changes to the completely empty signal bars icon
5. Hit the hotspot button only once, wait a few seconds it will turn on.
It works for me all the time. Posting from a tethered computer as we speak.

Tether Update
Just got my Moto Z Force today WoW!!! this is one motorola mother ship, anyway while we wait for the sunshine miracle, Tether is great with the PDANet app using Bluetooth, Super fast, not like the unfortunate HTC devices that try the same thing (BT is real slow) on the Z, BT is blazing fast, not much different than the Native Hotspot I used on HTC M9. Hey its free so WTF right?

Do you know if the signal refresher hack still works with the MCOS24.104-35-1-9 latest update?
Yes works after update! I just got a surface rt for work and was trying to find a root for t2 but with no luck but this worked!!! Very awesome! I came across the pull sim card out and out back in with little luck everytime I out card back in hotspot would disable. But this did the trick thank you!
Does this work with the nougat update?
Don't want to upgrade if it means losing hotspot.

I can't get it to work with the Network Refresh method. Shoot.
Just out of curiosity what is everyone using the mobile hotspot for? I never feel the need to use it, maybe I can offer some alternative insight.
I use it for when other people need wifi, doing homework at the park, my 3DS, very useful if you're traveling. Used it for like two years when I lived alone as my home wifi. Used to sell phones in a store that didn't have wifi and used it to backup and restore stuff for customers. Lots of little uses that add up quickly.
Hello all,
*** So far this is not working on Pie. It seems as though Sprint has found a way to keep the app from loading, but it is still on the device. I am working on a solution, but at this time, if you have not done the mod yet, do not update to Pie. If you have already done the mod and then update to Pie, hotspot will still work, but as of now there is no way into the lte settings apk. Again, I am working on a fix. Stay tuned.
As many of you already know, vndnguen is no longer offering the free version of his app, Shortcut Master Lite. I already purchased the full version to give my support and if you use the app, I suggest you do the same.
One very frequent use of Shortcut Master (Lite) was to access the LTE APN settings to unlock Unlimited Hotspot, or enter/remove proxy settings to avoid throttling or block ads. $5.49 seems a bit steep for simply unlocking a feature already built into the phone, so I have written my own app. This app is in no way based off of Shortcut Master, but some of the functionality of that app was the inspiration for this one. Shortcut Master does so much more than what this app does and is well worth the price so please support vndnguen.
I call it OpenIT. It is a simple app (less than 150 lines of java) that allows users to directly access the LTE APN settings at the push of a button. It also can pull up the dial pad to enter carrier reset codes or data codes. It was built using Android Studio and it is my first "real" application. It is kind of ugly. There isn't much functionality aside from what has been mentioned, and it may well become obsolete quickly if Sprint patches this ability.
Its purpose is to negate the need for an app like Shortcut Master and allow users who know what they are doing and even those who need help to figure out how to unlock some extra features of their phone.
How to Use this App:
It consists of 4 main buttons.
OPEN PHONE opens the dial pad. This is just to prevent users from having to go home and then open the dial pad. I haven't been able to get it to dial the ##27263# for a carrier brand reset, but if someone knows how, PM me! $5 bounty sound good?
DONATE NOW allows users to "donate" to me via PayPal. I am actually running it as a purchase so PayPal can take their cut and I don't get in trouble for being a fake nonprofit. This feature will be replaced by a Google Play in-app purchase if I release the app to the Play Store. For now, the button opens a link to my blog where I have embedded PayPal's checkout feature, but if someone knows how to make that more direct so you aren't bouncing around a 3rd party site (even though it is my own and uses https), please PM me.
OPEN LTE SETTINGS opens the hidden LTE Menu via com.test.LTEfunctionality.LTEFunctionalityTest and is where many changes can be made.
OPEN INSTRUCTION VIDEO opens a YouTube video where I describe the Shortcut Master Lite way of getting Hotspot working. This will be replaced by an app-specific video in a near future release.
Once you have done what you need to do, you can uninstall the app. You may reinstall it if you ever update your profile or PRL and/or your hotspot stops working.

Bugs:
None known yet, but probably a lot. It has only been tested via the Android emulator and on my Note 9 so if you have another device, I cannot guarantee if it will work at all or if it will scale properly. As I said it is my first "real" android app, so report report REPORT! That said, it should work on most Sprint phones and will not make any changes other than those you make outside the app, so it should be safe for use.
I will update this section with any known bugs.
Permissions:
NONE
There shouldn't be any. If it asks for any permissions aside from Google Play warning about loading a non-Play Store App, please let me know.
Payment:
This app is 100% free and 100% ad free. It will only be supported by donations. I may, in the future, make a paid version with added functionality or add functionality via in-app purchases, but only if it is something I think is worth actual money. I won't put built-in features of your phone behind a paywall. That would make me just as greedy as Sprint. Any donations are hugely appreciated and will be put directly towards coffee/beer to fuel future development.
You can also donate via PayPal right from the XDA site. Look just below my avatar and click the "Donate to Me" button. Pay whatever it is worth to you.
If you cannot afford a donation or don't want to donate, a thanks on this post is always appreciated!

Someone did comment on my YouTube video a while back saying that they had only 10GB and this enabled them to not be throttled and use 20+ GB. I cannot confirm that is true, but you can do the mod and test it. If you decide to do that, please report back!

Again, if it is on Sprint, it should work. Get the free version of the app. If it opens the LTE settings when you click the button, then it will work. If the app, instead, crashes, then it won't work because you don't have the LTE Settings application. It definitely won't mess anything up by trying. My app doesn't install or add anything. It only gives you the ability to make changes.

The reason this information is vital to me is I have been with Sprint since 2006 and am on an original grandfathered "truly unlimited" account. My current device is a Sprint LG-LS993. I do not pay $30/mth for hotspot. I currently use PDAnet 5.10.4 to tether internet to my laptop via bluetooth and USB when I want to share internet with a Virtualbox VM. It works well enough to download not very large files, watch movies every once in a while and stay connected 24/7 with Youtube, email, etc... I have 1 day left in this billing cycle and I am at 95.1129/Unlimited GB of Data for this month. My data usage is never an issue. My income is not bigtime rolling so I have to thoroughly research how a device that my carrier provides me with is going to function with a tethering solution, as apposed to one I purchase outright for $1000 that is unlocked because I can't afford to. I order it through Sprint, get the hardware for $10, and pay $35/ month to own it. When an unlocked model number is SM-N960U and one locked down by Sprint is SPHN960UBLK I feel a need to know for sure that tethering solutions function on a particular variant.
Back in the old days most Sprint devices were rootable. I started out with a HTC EVO 4G rooted. Went to an LGG2 rooted, followed by a Note 4 rooted and hotspot was achievable. At that point all bootloaders became seriously locked down. So root was not an option for my Note 7, S7, S7 Edge and my current LGG6, but PDAnet has been. The difference between actual hotspot and PDAnet is with hotspot I can PING, but not with PDAnet. This is the difference between a large successful download and a corrupt one. The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 was the best device I have had. Mine was one of those manufactured in China and was not an exploder. The ones with a country of origin like Vietnam or Korea, those were the dangerous ones. I would probably still be using my Note 7 today had Samsung not recalled all of them. Thank goodness for promotions though. The consolation of that whole fiasco was the free 256 GB microSD on the first device and then the free VR Gear on the replacement. Shattered the screen on my S7 Edge so went to the LGG6 due to a free 48" flat screen TV on that promotion. That was the only reason I went from Samsung to LG. I miss SideSync and other Samsung only things.
So I'm ready for the move back to Samsung and could really utilize an actual "hotspot" connection. I just need to make damn sure your solution will work on the SPHN960UBLK variant before I make my move. Android forever.
Love the work you've been doing. Thank you for understanding for my need for particular details.

I understand your need, however I do not think you understand how this app works. I mean no offense by that either. I don't expect everyone to know everything about application programming and even I am really new to the game.
I have also been with Sprint for a very long time. Like before I was even born, my parents used their phone cards at payphones. My first cell phone was a Sprint phone. We are on the same plan. Everything Data Family 1500 or something. Unlimited mobile to mobile, unlimited texts, unlimited unthrottled data, 1500 minutes. Also, Sprint is actually pretty good about their 13 day return policy. If you get the phone, get the app, and it then doesn't work after a few tries, then you can return it. My app makes no modifications to the phone itself and the process is completely reversible. I am 100% confident that my app will work. BUT!...
My app likely will not work forever. There have been many methods for unlocking unlimited Hotspot and Sprint has patched them all. In time, it is likely that my method too will be patched in a software update to the phone. Companies like Sprint don't like customers getting things for free when they can coerce them into paying for it. Even if it is a feature of the phone and not a right that Sprint has to take, it is still something to consider. They can patch the method I use, and while I and others will work to find a new one, we might not. They can also terminate your service because it does violate the contract that you signed. They cannot charge you because you are not using a service that is their own, but they can absolutely shut off your service.
I would hate to see you get it and it work perfectly and then in 3 months or even 2 weeks get an update disguised as a security update or worse, need an update due to a security vulnerability and Sprint wrap a patch for my app into it. Then you would be stuck, likely with no help until myself or someone else discovers a new way to get around it.

That is because you have a Pixel 2 and not a Samsung device. Sprint doesn't sell the Pixel and so does not have the carrier customization that Samsung or other models would have. You likely don't have Sprint visual voicemail or other apps specific to Sprint either.
Your settings are likely governed by your basic APN settings, or somewhere else on the phone. I thought pretty much all Google phones had the hotspot enabled by default?

Oh, sorry, didn't notice the forum, I was clicking any random search hit that seemed like it would help!
And unfortunately Android 8.1 completely borked native hotspot for the Pixel 2/XL - odd, because I had a Pixel 1 acting as my home's hotspot, and it lost no hotspot functionality after 8.1.

That shouldn't happen. I usually make sure that I have WiFi turned off before turning on hot spot though. That might be something to try.
