Anybody watch the unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Ice Cream Sandwich? I did, mainly to see what ICS was bringing to the table.....I'd be lying if said I found anything about it groundbreaking or innovating. Mostly minor changes, nothing to really write home about. I do like the look of it though, can't wait to get a device that utilizes it.

They just announced the arrival of Ice Cream Sandwich and that Samsung phone. Nothing really groundbreaking here but the interface looks very nice, has a classy feel to it and some much need functionality now built in, like data usage and an updated "contacts" app that now lists said contacts recent updates from linked social networking sites. It's also got "face unlock", a feature that uses the camera and it's face recognition software to unlock your phone.

I do too, I was just hoping for something more innovative and groundbreaking. I think I'd get a GSII before the Nexus Galaxy now, it's got a better GPU. I can't believe after all this hype and buildup that they would come out with a device that is seeming a step back from the recent GSII as far as cpu and gpu are concerned. I don't get it.

Official promo video Galaxy nexus and android 4.0:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-F_ke3rxopc&feature=player_embedded
From Engadget:
Okay, so we've already seen Ice Cream Sandwich running on the Nexus S, but that was decidedly... unofficial. We've just heard straight from Google's Gabe Cohen that the Nexus S will definitely be getting ICS. In fact, both he and Matias Duarte think most Gingerbread devices will see an upgrade, saying: "Currently in the process for releasing Ice Cream Sandwich for Nexus S. Theoretically should work for any 2.3 device." It's hardly a surprise and there's no specific word on timing just yet, but hopefully it won't take long to move that vanilla Android device up to something with a breaded exterior.
According to ciwrl on the cm forums it usually takes 3 months from when the code drops for a release. Now we are officially supported by cm we will hopefully get it on our x10s!

Well, even though Samsung and Google have delayed their event, Ice Cream Sandwich is around the corner and the funny thing is that still nothing has been confirmed of its features.
Looking forward to it on your Desire Z?
It'll be nice, but I'm sure not much of a change for day to day use for me. I'm more excited about getting it on my Nook Color.

I bought a Viewsonic gTablet and this was the same talk going on - No Honeycomb. Mods started to ban people whining about when HC would be ported to the gTab. I gave up hope and literally a month later, there was an alpha ROM and now there are 3-4 good HC ROMs out there. And I think Google didn't release the source code for it. So, I am sure we will get IS on our Zs!

In related news to CM, CM 7.1 final was released today
I would like to point out that there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that there will not be a 4.0 upgrade available for HTC VISION. Need I remind you all that there was an official upgrade to Android 2.2 for HTC SAPPHIRE/MAGIC32B made almost exactly ONE YEAR AGO? Yes, approximately the exact same time that HTC VISION was initially made available.
Also remember that the 32B was a 192 MB RAM device where only 97 MB was actually available to Linux. This significant upgrade from Android 1.6 to 2.2 required some MEMORY REDISTRIBUTION via new SPL to increase the available RAM to 112 MB. HTC VISION is not starved for RAM as the 32B was. HTC VISION has plenty of space left within the system partition (in fact on mine, there are 262 MB of free space on /system of over 400 total -- clearly intended to leave space for upgrades). Unlike the 32B, the specifications of Vision are far more than adequate, and even with a device as limited as 32B, they made the upgrade.

CM "team", as well as all the other rom cookers out there (yes, they are cookers, Android is written by Google, CM just cooks it and adds in a few goodies.) do a TERRIBLE job of versioning.
I once suggested a much more sensible approach to versioning, which is used by many other downstream open source projects... but they threw a tantrum.
Versioning of Android ROMs should be as follows;
UPSTREAMNAME-UPSTREAMVERSION-DOWNSTREAMREVISION.DOWNSTREAMNAMEVERSION.ARCHITECTURE
Obviously ARCHITECTURE doesn't apply directly, but this could be replaced with DEVICE.
So.... CM7.1 for VISION should be versioned as
android-2.3.7-0.CM7.1.vision
With this, if they make a minor update (that they would normally call CM7.1.1), it would increment the DOWNSTREAMREVISION, so the new version would be android-2.3.7-1.CM7.1.vision.
I.e., the point here would be to keep the priority on the upstream version rather than downstream, because "android-2.3.7" is FAR more important than "CM7.1". Quite frankly, the "CM" version means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

Nothing. There is nothing confirmed for Ice Cream Sandwich at all. Google has had it tightly wrapped up.
The only thing we do know that it is Android 4.0
Besides that:
Facial recognition features, new APIs to reduce development fragmentation, a unification of phone and tablet UIs and its APIs.
Nothing else is confirmed with sources beside it.
I know its early but has anyone heard anything about getting an official ICS on the Atrix?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
not as of yet but there's an awesone ICS theme on the market that works perfectly over CM ¬B^¬N.
This was discussed in depth in several different threads go here http://www.motorola.com/blog/2011/10/24/ice-cream-and-bootloaders-and-motorola-–-oh-my/. Most likely it will not recieve ics but click the link and keep checking it. Or if u dont feel like clicking it heres what it says.. A note about Ice Cream Sandwich: We are planning to upgrade DROID RAZR™ by Motorola, Motorola RAZR™, Motorola XOOM™ and DROID BIONIC™ by Motorola to Ice Cream Sandwich. We will provide more precise guidance on timing after post-public push of Ice Cream Sandwich by Google, as well as any possible additions to this list of devices
I dont understand why the atrix shouldnt get the 4.0 update when we have great top shelf specs but i bet the sensation will get it and we have the same processor speed but the atrix has more ram so were more then capable of running 4.0 but i guess because the atrix 2 is out thats a shame will we get it with cyanogen tho?
Yes we will get it with cm9 its an officially cyanogenmod supported device but the atrix 2 kay not even get it. But both might as well not anytime soon though. They want too release new devices with ics so people will buy them and they make more money. They dont make money updating current phones too ics
Still no GB here in UK & I doubt it ever will - So no chance ICS.
Motorola are too lazy & want you to buy a new phone with each software update - So I am gonna do that - I'm getting the Galaxy Nexus. Stuff moto
I don't think most of us are too concerned about an "official" ICS from Moto..but rather getting a port of some sort.
1. Wrong section.
2. There are many threads about this already.
3. Please view motorola's official website about upgrades for future reference.
4. Motorola only stated that 4 devices, excluding Atrix 4G and Atrix 2 will get ICS but did also mentioned that it is possible that other devices MIGHT be added to this list.
5. CM9 can get us a port but the drivers will not be optimized for ICS as Motorola has to optimize them for ICE first. Therefore, even if we get a ported version it won't work at it's full potential.
6. Please close this thread.

imo note is designed for ics. samsung was aiming to release it with ics in early 2012 but too much interest from the market made them release earlier. but google (and maybe samsung) wants nexus chrome to be the first ics phone on the market so they cant release it with ics. so i think gingerbread roms for note are just for waste time until the google and samsung decides nexus did fine. and as i believe samsung aimed ics for the note i think they are not spending much time on gingerbread roms for note. so when ics is realeased i am expecting everything to be improved.
Whilst ICS will undoubtedly bring all sorts of improvements to the Note, until such time that a decent ecosystem of Honeycomb/ICS apps is built up (and remember, there aren't a great deal of Honeycomb specific tablet apps either), the vast majority of apps are still targeting 2.x iterations (Gingerbread, Froyo etc) of Android, which means that 2.x apps are likely to be de rigueur for some time yet.
I'm as keen as the next guy to get ICS onto my Android devices (Note, GTab, Transformer etc), but without application support it really doesn't matter too much.
Enjoy the Note for what it is today, not what it may be tomorrow!
Regards,
Dave
I am interested in knowing how the hardware (including touch) buttons will fit into the ICS UI. AFAIK, ICS has Back-Home-Recent-etc buttons on the 'always visible' taskbar within the screen. So unless there is a modified interface for phones there will be some redundancy.
Anyone knows how this will be handled?

As far as I know (at least that's what I saw on Desire Android Development for ICS ROMs) that 'always visible' bar can be "disabled", at least the keys on it. Some more experienced user may correct me tho
The on-screen-buttons will not be visible on devices with hardware buttons/touch buttons. I guess they can easily be enabled, but i do not see the point of doing that.
ICS for Galaxy Note
I heard ICS for Note will come on 2nd quarter. Still waiting for the release.
Also Galaxy SIII is coming with ICS4. is there any major firmware difference in Note and SIII? Why we cant use the same for Note and release the official release?
And I thought that we already have a sticky for these kind of discussions!!

2 it will search for appropriate forums for you and automatically post in the right forums

Samsung never announces release dates in advance. We didn't get a real advance release date for S2, we won't have it for this device.
We don't know what to expect... Right now all leaks have Superbrick kernels, I suspect that's one of the things slowing down ICS for every device but the S2. Samsung tried to add some performance tweaks and FAILED MISERABLY and they're trying to figure out what the **** they broke now.

There are so many changes this update is from the ground up in comparison to honeycomb
Think of honeycomb as the brainstorm and testing ideas and ice cream sandwich as the finished product
Framework changes UI changes memory management changes face detection improved multi tasking etc etc theres to much to list but its huge!!!!
What dog testing means is that google employees are now using a OTA of ice cream sandwich a mock up public release so to speak they say its a alpha but really its a late beta if they are sticking to there schedule plus why would they OTA a very ruff build no point so it has to be late stages or theres no point testing it on a specific device right?
Id say if they are doing this its a sign of fine tunning and getting out real world issues and bugs

If sammy wont act like a b*tch, then we will also get ICS like the nexus s one in one or two months, hopefully. I dont even want the touchwiz itself on my sgs with ICS, only the music and video player from SGS GB those are for me the best apps.
So lets just hope that there will be soon an update for our awesome phone
cauz there arent so many differences between the phones, ok, cam is different, touch keys are different and nand flash is different. But doesnt matter^^ If sammy wont do anything, there is CM9 ;D
I really hope Sammy is listening to us... we never had the chance to use all the horse power in this phone!!
lets send billions of e-mail twit fb... to samsung so they hear
Not a bad idea!!!!
