GB seems old. - Epic 4G General

Now that ICS has been talked about and previewed, does GingerBread seem old to anybody else, even though we're JUST getting a close to fully working CM7 build?

Considering when new things come out, i.e. ice cream sandwich, usually makes the model or version before old. So until ics releases, GB will still be "new"

I agree. All I can see myself doing now is trying to tweak my phone to mimic ICS. Forget gingerbread, that was December 2010!

Doesn't seem old to me.

I'v been runing just about that same setup with Urban Reg 1.1.1

The age of a version of Android is more about just a voice in the back of your head. Android's appearance hadn't really changed much from Cupcake to Gingerbread. All that ever gave us a fresh user experience were third party launchers and themes. An Eclair phone with Go Launcher will feel absolutely no different from a Gingerbread phone with Go Launcher in daily use.
ICS is the first time this has really changed, since Google has apparently FINALLY paid attention to the GUI. The new elements introduced aren't exactly magical, and don't amount to much more than polish and adopting many features that were already offered by third party launchers, but the refinement is welcome.
My only concern is the same one I have whenever open source OSes attempt GUI modifications--open OSes tend to be developed entirely from a programmer's perspective, and therefore tends to crap on casual usability. Google hopefully avoided this, but the sharp angles and harsh lines of the ICS screenshots remind me a lot of the sort of design philosophies that brought us countless ugly and idiotic Matrix-inspired desktop customizations with eye-straining color contrasts and bizarre obsessions with green/blue and black.
Hopefully ICS won't pull a Unity, at least.

[Q] New Sense with Gingerbread?

Does anyone think HTC will give us the new sense with the gingerbread release?
I'm really hoping so. any word on the due date for us Proud EVO owners?
I heard somewhere that it'll be mid February
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
It's certainly possible we'll get it. HTC and Sprint have been treating the Evo very well. It's still a flagship device for Sprint.
At the very least, any minor annoyances, lag, or general feeling of choppiness will be phased out (im looking at you, bottom of app drawer) due to gingerbread finally allowing the launcher, as well as pretty much every other native app to use the phones gpu for hardware acceleration. Im hoping this works out well for us, but since we know the EVO's gpu isn't exactly a monster... oh well, I have an upgrade anyway

That's actually not true. 2.3 still doesn't have full HW acceleration.

Yeah Gingerbread does not use HW acceleration. I know when Android does, it will make the experience even better then it already is.

I spoke with an HTC rep about three weeks ago, and their indication was that we would be getting both Gingerbread and the new Sense 2.0, likely in the same update, around the end of January/beginning of February. They said the update was ready to go before Christmas, they were just waiting on Sprint for the all-clear to push the OTA. Here's hoping!

Anyone else as indecisive as me? (ROM & Launcher changing)

I'm running CM7 right now with Launcher Pro. Yesterday I was using ADW. Tomorrow I'll be cursing Launcher Pro and using ADW again. Vice versa the day after that. And I'm sure at some point this weekend I'll flash back to stock/Sense and talk about how it's more stable, even though it's slower, etc., but then eventually I'll miss the speed of CM7. Back and forth... back and forth...
...anyone else share my frustration?

I do have a problem as well!
I am currently in a mega-slump... I can not find a "look" that I'm happy with on my phone =( I can't find icons, walls or docks that satisfy me!
I am pretty settled on CM7 tho.. have been a CM guy for a long time.. even tho I did mess around with Myn a touch.
I do hear a lot about Mikfroyo .. if CM battery life doesn't improve for me, I may give his rom a shot. I will be a total nUb again tho, Sense is strange to me now.

All I did was wipe cache/dalvik again and reflash the ROM overtop of itself, and it took.
It's nice... but meh... I'm so indecisive.
WiFi also wasn't working.
I can relate, though lately I have been completely content. My current setup is CM7 + LauncherPro. Yesterday I flashed MikZ and MIUI, but neither stayed on my phone for longer than 2 hours. There are just too many things about CM that I like that neither of those two ROMs, nor any other ROM can offer. This doesn't totally surprising because last time I settled down on a ROM was with CM 6.1.2 before I got bored and bounced around to MIUI, MikFroyo, and various others for a few of months.
BTW, if you are finding LP to lack in performance on CM7, try disabling elastic scrolling. The difference I noticed after doing this was like night and day and now LP is as smooth as ADW.
I'm very indecisive when it comes to launchers; one day its adwEX next its launcher7. Im pretty happy right now but next week it'll be diff.

I know this isn't the theme section.
But I'm afraid you're going to have to provide us with a link to those icons. I know it's harsh.. but it has to be done.
I made them from scratch (the phone is a windows wingdings font thing, though).
Attached .zip file has the separate icon images and the docks. I'm actually using the pre-made dock (with blank icons in place) because if I add the icons on separately (Launcher Pro) they're too small.

Same here. It may as well be 2.3.7.
The main UI will be largely the same however certain elements will have more of a 3.x twist to them, like the widget screen and app switcher.
Also apps will work differently when in landscape (tablet mode) to portrait (phone mode).

Taken from Engadget comments.
-Honeycomb uses a much newer kernel build, 2.6.36, and ICS was allegedly supposed to use the new Linux 3.0 kernel
-Phone icon taken directly from froyo, not even gingerbread
-Android version is supposed to say the version number, not name, even with previous leaks with gingerbread they always showed the number. ie 3.1 or 4.0
-This has a teal blue theme rather than the dark blue colors of Honeycomb
-App tray should be semi-transparent, where are the holographic UI elements from Honeycomb?
- Shouldnt the clock have an LED font?
- That power control widget has been removed ever since Honeycomb

Nothing against the guy but I dont see the real point in editing the pictures, infact i dont see the whole point of this "proof of concept" photo. Was expecting more changes from ICS though.. I wonder how it performs resolution scaling with apps?
I still hope those are fake or just an early test version. Can't really see much improvement if that's what ICS looks. Hopefully it will be much better than that.

4.Download the ICS Apps listed here.Note:I've only tried Google Music, not the others. Use at your own risk. The ICS launcher shown is the same as the one in step 2.

Well CM9 isn't exactly equal to ICS out of the box, right? Our devs do amazing things, and I don't think you can quite compare CM9 to ICS stock.
Unless of course you have a Verzion Galaxy Nexus we don't know about .

Third party apps load slow? Browser uses excessive RAM? The "F" are they talking about? My ICS doesn't seem to match theirs...

Umm the exact reason this phone is not getting ics. Its been well known ics is gonna be more intensive all the way around. Not a shocker.
this sony posted about the differenances of gb and ics:
http://developer.sonymobile.com/wp/...ical-differences-between-gingerbread-and-ics/
i like that they are going to let you turn off parts of ics, if slows down your phones.

Huh? We didn't get ICS because we didn't have enough ROM space. ICS runs fine on my Epic. I've ran the stock ICS port too and it ran almost as smooth as cm9.

........
We have the same ROM on BML and MTD. The main reason is that even if we have a larger system partition, we can still not fit bloatware, touchwiz, and ics.
As mkasick has said before, Samsung can change BML and RFS all that they want for an update. They just do not choose to because the Galaxy S 1 should be EOL by now and even if they did do an ics update, it would run pretty slow and be buggy and miss features of toucheiz that the average user likes.

I see the average user as they want an update from thir damn phone so gps works and want a better look, I've asked several people I know who have this phone they don't know anything about rooting, etc... they all pretty much told me they wanted something that works and were all tired of the TW look to it so I say otherwise. Get rid of bloatware its not needed and strip TW away as much as it needs so ICS will operate.
I asked them all about battery life and they told me it doesn't matter as long as a charger is near by there were a few who said I would like longer battery life and pointed them into the rootin process. I surveyed more than 10 people.

Why does it matter if TW is present in the updates Sprint gives us? We're all rooted and have a choice between stock/custom TW or AOSP roms. Sprint is only updating the Epic long enough till they get a new slider that have LTE. I doubt they'll update pass GB, and the value pack would be pushing it. Too much of a hassle for those who like their phone for it's average looks.

Our phone isn't a Nexus brand phone, so bloatware and TouchWiz are mandatory (so to speak) on our phones. No way around it. Sprint/Samsung would never send out an update to a TouchWiz based phone without TW on it. While we here at XDA would love nothing more, it's simply not going to happen. They have to profit some way, some how from all that crap otherwise there wouldn't be a need for it in the first place. And once it's there, from a stock standpoint, it's there to stay.
