[Q] New Sense with Gingerbread? - EVO 4G General

Does anyone think HTC will give us the new sense with the gingerbread release?
I'm really hoping so. any word on the due date for us Proud EVO owners?

I heard somewhere that it'll be mid February
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

It's certainly possible we'll get it. HTC and Sprint have been treating the Evo very well. It's still a flagship device for Sprint.

At the very least, any minor annoyances, lag, or general feeling of choppiness will be phased out (im looking at you, bottom of app drawer) due to gingerbread finally allowing the launcher, as well as pretty much every other native app to use the phones gpu for hardware acceleration. Im hoping this works out well for us, but since we know the EVO's gpu isn't exactly a monster... oh well, I have an upgrade anyway

That's actually not true. 2.3 still doesn't have full HW acceleration.

Yeah Gingerbread does not use HW acceleration. I know when Android does, it will make the experience even better then it already is.

That would be nice.

I really don't think it's appropriate to "spam" a manufacturer for something you want.

hahah ok yea just trying to help.... and relieve my boardom.
so IS there any way we can try to get it? i want actually considering spamming, but is there any alternative method?

I spoke with an HTC rep about three weeks ago, and their indication was that we would be getting both Gingerbread and the new Sense 2.0, likely in the same update, around the end of January/beginning of February. They said the update was ready to go before Christmas, they were just waiting on Sprint for the all-clear to push the OTA. Here's hoping!

i'm very exited for this new update. does anybody know what we will be getting from gingerbread? or is the update solely 2.3 and sense 2.0?

Gingerbread
Last time I checked, 2.3 WAS Gingerbread. Maybe you are thinking of 3.0 which is Honeycomb for tablets?

i meant what things would come with the update. like froyo came with a flashlight app etc. or will we just get gingerbread coding and sense 2.0 (which would still be very nice)

i really think google needs to work on perfecting froyo before they even think about rolling out GB, so far i don't think many people are really liking froyo to much, just doesn't seemed all it was hyped up to be to many.

NO WAI did you see the flash light?
I think they should let FroYo die and focus on making GB a better release, especially if they're numbering it as a major version. Honeycomb is nothing more than a name at this point. If they already knew what they wanted to develop for it, they'd just put it in GB.

Personally I enjoy froyo a lot better then eclair and yes maybe it is not perfected however gingerbread is going to be a brand new version of android where as froyo is still a 2.x version of android making the possibilities in advancement greater then on froyo... Why waste time perfecting something when you have something better to perfect?

Think of Froyo like Windows Vista. It had improvements over XP but with a lot of problems too that left most rather unimpressed. So Microsoft decided cut short development of Vista in favor of developing Windows 7 which by-in-large has been well received such that we would like to forget that Vista ever happened. In the same way, I think we will forget about Froyo once Gingerbread releases, provided that it actually is a great remake of Android.
In other words, why waste time perfecting a buggy OS? Just start over. Rethink the OS from scratch with a few lessons learned from previous successes and failures.
Eh...just my $0.02.

Supposedly Gingerbread will completely overhaul the default Android user interface, to the point where HTC was being asked if they would even include Sense on 3.0 (they said they still would, unfortunately...) That's what I'm most excited about Android is pretty B.A. but it's ugly as heck.
Once again why waste time perfecting something when there is something new to perfect

Evo 2.3 Update

I was thinking, since HTC overlays android with Sense, What's the point of us getting 2.3? Except the AOSP roms. Shouldn't we just be more excited for the new sense to come besides 2.3?
From what I understand, the 2.3 update is more under the hood than aesthetic... So while it'll look the same (save for a few animations, like the CRT outro), you'll get marginally better performance out of everything. The menus might look a little cleaner but you're right, there isn't going to be a lot that you'll be able to SEE in the update.
That said, your Android experience will be a little better. Faster processing, hopefully better battery life, etc. That's the stuff you should look forward to.
I just want the new HTC Sense.

I wasn't all that impressed when we got the update to 2.2. I guess the build up before release had me thinking that it was going to be a lot different than it turned out to be. That said, now that I have got used to the new features in 2.2, their is no way I could go back to 2.1. I have a hunch that the 2.3 experience will be the same.
Well, you have to consider that we have HTC Sense UI to contend with. I'm sure if you ask Nexus One users (running AOSP and not bogged down by manufacturers), they'll most definitely tell you a different story. My friends with the N1 think 2.2 is great since their phones fly now (literally...jk). I think one of them said he gets like 35ish MFLOPS on linpack compared to only around 7 on 2.1 before. Anyways, hardware limits aside, just like 2.2 brought Flash-support, battery optimization, and few other improvements...I'm sure Gingerbread 2.3 will bring some excitement to the table. Don't knock it yet.

if you install 2.3 gingerbread you will not have senseUI any longer as Google is doing the same thing that Microsoft and Apple are now doing, not allowing any third party overlays. If you want to keep senseUI then stick with 2.2 or wait for someone to jailbreak 2.3 and void your warranty. I plan to install 2.3 when it is available but will miss senseUI. But Google wants 2.3 and above to be a premium device with a consistent user interface experience. Currently their are several different user experiences which give different experiences to the same user. This needs to stop. Look at Apple and MS with Windows Phone 7. If an Android user picks up one phone they should be able to pick up any other android phone and be able to use it with out having to learn a different interface such as TouchWIZ or SenseUI. Granted I love SenseUI but I believe in what Google is doing by uniting them. This is also being done to stop fragmentation as well.
Samsung TouchWIZ
HTC SENSEUI
Launcher 2.x for Android 2.1+
As you can see their is no common user interface, which does not give a common user expierence like Apple does. And no i do not love apple.

I wouldn't exactly call this a confirmation, but there is some inference here:
http://www.helloandroid.com/content/how-open-open-source-android-truly
Personally, I think that HTC will simply shift their focus slightly. Unstead of having a full UI overlay, they may have device proprietary widgets to continue the sense feel on stock android shell.

Exactly! Was planning on switching to sprint in jan. This is just in time. Just what I wanted. I do not want a behemoth to carry arround. My nexus one with 3.7 screen is perfect size. All I missed was a slide out keyboard and front facing cam.
One other thing I like to consider though. Which will be more likely to have future OS versions ported? I dont bother on relying on sprint/samsung/htc for updates. I am asking about difficulty for devs. A big reason I was considering the epic is that the nexus s came out running the same platform, which made me think porting new OS releases would relatively easy. Is the shift likely to get new releases faster since it is an HTC product? I know it is impossible to know anything but what are your guy's thoughts on this right now?

Err, not sure if this is sarcasm, as beyond exaggeration it is false. You imply the shift has a slower CPU. Dont count mhz. The second gen snapdragon in the shift will certainly outperform the evo without question and with 45nm tech get better batt life to boot. I agree the Evo is not sluggish though. Which means the shift will be even better. Maybe you just need to ditch sense?
As for screen size that is not a downgrade. It is user preference. I like a nice compact device, not a brick.
Same thing with keyboard. I like getting real work done on my handset. KB is very effective.
If you already know this and were joking I apologize . If you were serious you should really rethink your position and recognize that different things suit different people (the CPU issue however is clear cut that the shift is superior).
Cheers!
Those of you who do decide to buy the Shift might be disappointed come June when the true successor to the Evolution drops.

I found the leaked ROM to be sluggish compared to 2.1 stock; I've found the 2.2 official update to be virtually identical to chiefz version - a bit sluggish. I definitely like having the wireless "hotspot" on her un-rooted slide; helps to share our two 5gb data plans wirelessly. I tried to move a few large apps to sd (Froyo a2sd) and apps that should be able to be moved were not able to be moved and I'm unsure if that's due to not having root. HTC sync and bluetooth have turned on by themselves after I disabled them in settings ... very odd. My wife doesn't seem care one way or the other but I'm a root user so I have a different take on things. The bottom line is it keeps the system as it always has been and adds some useful features. It appears some bugs were fixed from the release notes but I have a suspicious feeling a whole new set of bugs may crop up. With all the time that has passed I believe HTC could have done a better job. Hoping the wife is is happy with it because I will never hear the end of it if she prefers the old stock ROM. Fingers crossed ...

Official ICS Officially DeBlurred

Motorola ICS UI review: this isn't the Blur we used to know
Looks like the official ICS ROM will be mostly vanilla. With such a light touch and now being owned by Google, maybe they'll go full vanilla in the future.

We already have a few ICS discussion threads, you could have known that months ago by reading one of them.
This thread title is misleading. Offical release date is most likely Q4 2013.

No, I'm pretty sure it's next Tuesday.
MB860, CM7.2.0, Faux 026b1 1Ghz
And I stand by my original statement that it will be released on Friday.
Jelly Bean right after, on Saturday.
I am not sure if they would provide a vanilla UI for ATrix like we see in Razr.

I think yes. It's cheaper and easier to use the same code.
Consider we're talking about motorola. That UI is for OMAP devices and Atrix isn't equipped with OMAP. We'll see all together.
I doubt the UI will be different just because the processor is. With it so deblurred, you gotta wonder why they even bother redoing any part of it. They can just include the bloat they want as apps without messing with the framework. Maybe the carriers are insisting on crippling some features.
Code is written in high level programming language like C++.

Its the same case as why the Photon and Atrix got a different, uglier and sluggish Blur instead of the one that came with all the Motorola phones equipped with OMAP4 chips.
Heck, the ICS Blur we see on our Atrix might even be the original ugly Android4 blur that is available for download everywhere.
Sent from that Atrix.

Agreed.
Heck the launcher on the initial Froyo builds was so much more faster!
And then the rest of the Motorola phones comes out, and guess what ? Atrix is suddenly sluggish? I mean seriously?
I actually complained about screen switching being TOO fast on the Froyo build lol... ooops.
GB update was weird for me, it worked GREAT for a long time, then it started getting buggy and sluggish, I factory reset it like 4 times with new blur accounts etc, and nothing helped, finally rom'd it the other day and couldn't be happier..
Got to figure out a solution for webtop though, I used that a LOT.

If reports are correct (that Webtop has been replaced with tablet mode plus some candy), then the only solution that is rational is to run a headless Linux disttro and RDC into it.
Even if all the bits of code needed to spin up X are opensource, it is going to be a huge pain for somebody to port it over to ICS. And some items (such as the kernel mod that mux's inputs to both X and 'droid) I do not beleive are avaiable.
Using an RDC aproach makes it is fairly easy to put a distro of your choice on the Atrix though, so that is a plus.
To me the question would be if I was to use a full screen RDC to an 'ux desktop, or just bring up a window to the app that I want. Really need to see how it all plays after we get the real Tegra drivers for ICS out.
