Transferring Upgrades??? - EVO 4G General

Im not due for an upgrade on my line until May. I want the Epic 4G Touch now though, im tired of my EVO 4G. My mom has a full upgrade on her line that she will let me use to get a phone. Will we be able to purchase a Epic with the discounts and contract extension on her line, and simply change the numbers? Thanks.

Give them a call and see, seems like something that would be possible.

I've done that before, you used to have to wait x amount of days before you could or they would charge you for the full price, but last time I did it for the evo it worked like a charm. Buy it then change it online
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

I've done that many times, with all 4 of my lines in my family plan. If you're not sharing a plan it won't work. Doing that is how I got my evo. If they ask why just tell them the Epic Touch is too big for her.

I did it in store at a best buy.
Sprint store told me I would lose the mail in rebate if I didn't keep the phone on the original line for 30 days or something, but best buy has no rebate, and didnt care, just did it.

I'll bite. What happens tonight?

That should be no problem. Just call telesales and ask to have upgrade shipped cold. Then when you receive the phone call care to swap it with whatever phone # you like. I place orders like that for my customers every day. As long as you don't turn over your entire account in a rolling 2 year period you'll always have an upgrade available. the only thing I can't verify is whether that impacts your rebate, as my customers are all corp and gov't accounts and don't get mail in rebates.
Edit: technically sprint policy is the exact opposite of what I just wrote; upgrades have to be used for the line on which they were ordered. But it just has never really been enforced. So don't go holding me liable if you don't get your rebate or whatever else happens. I don't know if any other wireless providers enforce a policy like that, but it seems to me like it's a losing proposition. At the end of the day customers are going to swap out their phones however they want to, it's too hard to enforce, and the customer's perception is that it's unfair to go around policing things like that.

Well thats the thing, we're on 2 different lines, on 2 different ACCOUNTS. But would the discounts hold up? I Guess not, NOOOOO!!!!!!! lol

why dont u just have her upgrade her phone to which ever phone you want, and simply swap phones online or at the sprint store. so in the end she keeps her phone, and u get the upgrade, but like it was mentioned before, u will lose the mail-in-rebate, unless u buy the phone at best buy.

Thats my point. So I guess I should go and get it at Best Buy?

Sounds like the best bet, I've never bought a phone from them, so I don't know if they are capable of transferring numbers tho, anyone else know if best buy can swap phones?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

Recently attempted to swap phones on 2 different service plans, I was gonna use my mother in laws phone to upgrade my kids line. The in store rep said she would have to keep the phone for at least 30 days, or she would be charged full price.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium

I did this at Best Buy as well, used the upgrade on my Mom's line to get my Evo last spring. No extra charges, no waiting, they just transfer it for you.

I used my wife's upgrade the last two times to go from my Hero to the EVO4G and then to the EVO 3D. I did all of them at Wal-Mart. The guy in the electronics department did everything for me.

So best buy would be the best bet? Even if the upgrade is on a total different account? I just dont want to lose the discount on the phone!

Lost my phone, now i can "upgrade"...

so i lost my phone the other night and long story short sprint has awesome customer service, and they pushed me forward to allow me to purchase an "upgrade". kind sucks though right now as i had the evo and currently there's not many more options. what should i do? another evo? i was thinking about the shift and it seems pretty promising hardware and overclocking capabilities?
So, if I were you, I would buy a used phone, and Hold On to that upgrade credit. Even used Evos are kinda cheap right now, and if you "upgrade" to that, well then you are Stuck with that on contract. And thats bad because ...
Currently, there is no "upgrade" from the Evo from Sprint (yes yes, debatable. Some say the Epic is awesome, I don't think so.)
Sprint is about to announce new phones on Tues, and if they let you keep your credit for a few months, you should be able to grab an Evo3D.
wait for the EVO 3D

Is this the same as just paying the ETF if its been prorated to an amount less than the difference between the retail price and upgrade price of a phone?

Its sort of like an in between fee. He paid a small to get his upgrade now, instead of the 3 months when he may have gotten it. The ETF would be as in ending your contract, cutting the sprint service.

Well I said 3 months as an example, it could have been at the end of the year. And as far as I know, the fee is variable, based upon when you ask for it.
So like march > june = smaller fee
march > november = bigger fee.

Even if the price is virtually the same, an ETF and an early upgrade to your line are still different. You keep you current plan and you current account, as well as the time you've been there (aren't there benefits for 10 year customers or something?)
I guess there are reasons to want an entirely new account, I just don't know them.

That makes sense. I didn't realize ETF would cost you your account history. I wonder is the dollar amount is the same though.
I know people who have paid ETFs before because it was only like 50 bucks and they turned right around and signed a new contract and got a 500 dollar phone for 200 dollars. 300 dollar savings makes the ETF worth it in such a case, if its far enough into the contract. (If you don't mind losing account history. Are you certain you lose it?)

I worked for radioshack for 3 years. I deeply loathe that place. Please people don't buy your phones at radioshack. Its all they care about and those prices are so low because district managers pressure associates into not selling phones unless you get accessories with it. Don't believe me? Go ahead and try it. I guarantee you the salesman will turn you away not sell you the handset if you don't get something alongside with it.
Bottom line. Get your phones online. I bought both of my epics back in november for 100? If im not mistaken off of letstalk.com. amazon normally has awesome deals too. Save yourself the hassle of being hassled and don't put money into these corporate pigs pockets.

Yes. The guy at my local radio shack was pushing me towards an Evo. Boo! he said there was no other phone in its class. I said what about the epic? And he just kinda scoffed and said it was a decent phone.

It bad. You get harassed and your job threatened everyday. Your NEVER good enough in that place. For those interested or want to work there this is what you will experience.
Radioshack gets angry if you don't sell they're quota of phones a day. If you sell your phone by itself they get angry. I you sell a phone with accessories (and they have a minimum like 20-40 bucks), cool. Now did you get the warranty? No? Your not good enough. Here's a write up. I remember when the i4 came out and they said it was mandatory to sell the 70$ applecare with it. Lol. Oh and don't forget about the plethora of other **** you gotta do there besides earn commission selling cell phones. Which is essentially the only real way to make money there.

jeez, I've never had an issue buying a phone at radio shack. I've never bought accessories there and they just seemed happy I was getting a phone.
Lovely.. i'm within 30 days.. now I get to see if i can get best buy to price match/guarantee, or return it (stupid restocking fee) and get it for $100 cheaper.. if it was $20-40 difference I wouldn't bother, but $100.. that's worth some time to get my money back.

Best or Cheapest place to buy a new epic 4g?

My brother is due for an upgrade and he's new to android. I think the phone will be great for him. So I was wondering where is the best place to buy an epic? I'm looking in terms of price and deals. So far, the best deal I found was at radio shack where I can get one for $49 + tax w/ contract after trading any old working phone.

Talked to two different radio shack stores just now. The first store that I called said that its for new contracts only. The second one I called said that upgrades were indeed eligible for the offer, and the first store I called didn't know what they were talking about. She even went on to say that she just recently did the same offer for an upgrading customer...so I don't know what to believe.

I strongly recommend reading your contract, because selling your phone (without putting a new phone on your contract to take the service of your old phone) may be seen as abandoning your service. If you abandon your service, then the provider may consider that an early termination. That is what happened to me when I was with Verizon and got rid of my phone before having a replacement phone added to my account.
A contract is a contract. Getting rid of your phone does not change that.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
If you break your contract, you will be charged $200.00 for disconnect, then another $200.00 for early termination, plus a bad credit mark.If you replace it with another phone, your good.

If he wants to cancel his contract he would only have to pay the eft fee last I checked and the remaining bill he has. I recently did that
Also if you sell the phone and don't pay your bill etc, the new buyer will be screwed. The esn will be blacklisted. So pay your etf and sell the phone.

if you just sell it, then the person who buys it is screwed cuz the ESN will be locked, then you'd have to pay a fee, or you could just stop paying and say screw them, go to verizon and get a new plan, just can never go back to Sprint. Believe it or not, Sprint does not actually go on your credit

Have your friend waive your ETF fee. Are your parents phones on the same plan? If so don't force roam or you may have their lines cancelled as well. The only phone out right now that is reasonably worth going thru the hassle to get rid of your contract for is the sgs2 and its not that GREAT, yet its still lacking in the development area, and has issues with calls if you don't flash the updated radios. The MOTO Photon is a pain with its jacked up bootloader encryption, last I checked fully unldocking it broke 4g and temp rooting caused the phone resource to freeze up and FC randomly, and the 3vo well the 3vo is a holographic headache. Anything I did in 3d on it gave me a splitting headache, same with my dad. He had/has all 3 phones he ditched the 3vo for the Photon got stuck with the Photon then added another line just to get the SGS2 to get rid of the photon. Hope that helps. Hopefully Sprint will drop something better around the holidays or early next year when my upgrade is ready.

Pay etf or whatever and cancel your account. Sell phone on eBay with good esn and reimburse yourself with the money from the phone. Everyone wins.
Support TrevE! Fuh Q CIQ!
See if you can assume the payment from your parents/turn it into your own single-line account. I wouldn't do anything to goof your credit or your parents at this point; easy to screw up, tough to repair. The Evo still rocks, I've stopped having gadget lust (mostly) since getting mine 9 months ago. Learn to root it and it can be like a new phone whenever you want
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
OP,
If you are getting the phone in your name, why not do a change of financial responsibility?
If you are wanting another phone, you need to either fulfill the contract, pay full price for the new phone, or call Sprint and ask what the ETF is.
See, I am in a situation where I "want" another phone to replace my EVO. I am simply tired of replacing the EVO. My upgrade isn't until March or April 2012 (different departments tell me different things). Anyway, my ETF is only $60 at the moment. "If" there was a must have replacement, I could call Sprint to cancel this line and pay the ETF. This will allow me to sell my EVO with a clear ESN. I could then add a line to my account, get new user pricing, but loose my current phone number (a Sprint Retention Employee suggested this option).
Or, I could pay the ETF and get a phone like the Droid Razr or Galaxy Nexus when it launches (soon?)

OP,
If you are getting the phone in your name, why not do a change of financial responsibility?

I just left Sprint and came to T-Mobile and got the GS4. Sprint sucks. Spent 6 years dealing with their horrible data speeds on a smartphone. Not anymore! T-Mobile is a big improvement. Not sure if this Jump! program is a good idea for those who buy all the newest phones and then sell them on craigslist towards the new one. Doesn't seem like it saves you very much since you have to turn in the phone you currently have.
Well, if you do the math.....$99 down and $20/mo for 6/mo, and $10/mo for the Jump program, thats $279. $579-279 is $300. Yes, you could get more on craigslist if you wanted, but its better than most of the other trade in programs, and its very convenient. And that extra $10 includes insurance/theft protection.
So right now, I got the S4 in May and of course I have to pay it off. If I enroll in the program I don't have to pay it off anymore or what?

Yes... But I read you have to wait 6 months before the first upgrade. The payoff disappears, trade in your current phone, and buy at new customer price... With the monthly financing of course.

The question is: when does if start? It officially starts July 14, so does it apply only to new purchases after that? Or will they let you do it retroactive to a certain date. Also you have to have the insurance plan already, which I believe must be put on at the time of purchase of the phone.
I just read on T-Mobile's site: " JUMP must be added within 14 days of qualified device purchase."
Does this mean we are screwed if we got our S4 before July 1st? The program starts on the 14th.

Sounds like it, but maybe you can call them on the 14th and plead your case.

I watched the full press conference and had some of the same questions you guys do. One of the things they said was that there would be a limited time opportunity for existing customers to sign up, but there were no further details given. So I decided to ask. The first person through customer service chat hadnt even heard of it yet so I asked in the forums. The only answer I got there was someone saying it was for all simple choice customers. But if you go here to the Jump info page toward the bottom of the page it says "Already a T-Mobile customer?" and has a link. When you click that link it takes you to your log on. After logging in it takes you back to that info page with the July 14th date. If it wasnt for existing customers I dont see why that would be on the "Jump" page.
Heres how I think it works as far as existing customers. When it starts on July 14th there will be a limited time window for existing simple choice customers that already have the insurance to be able to change their existing PHP insurance to "Jump". Since I am still within my 14 day period I made sure I added the insurance just to make sure I qualified. We will know soon enough, but my guess is that it will be available to us for a limited time, and only if we already have the standard insurance they offer now.

So if you have insurance like php. Then just add the 10 dollars a month. Or does it replace that and just pay the jump price instead of the insurance cost.

It replaces your existing insurance. So if your paying the 7.99 now its only $2 more to replace it with Jump. This covers basically everything that could break your phone, theft, loss, and adds the ability to upgrade up to twice a year. I just tweeted John Legere the CEO and asked about current customers. Ill update this if he answers.

This is true. But for me I'd rather sell on Craigslist and get a little bit more for it which I can use the difference, after paying off my eip, to put down on a new phone. Plus the $2 a month I'm saving not going with the program and doing the regular $7.99 insurance instead. But that's just me.
