ReelPortal Video Chat (Skype Alternative) - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

So my dad was looking for skype for his new Playbook and since skype is not released for the playbook yet, video chat with my family from Germany was a no go. He stumbled upon Reelportal Video Chat and now we can video chat anywhere in the world for free(at least I hope). It is a great skype alternative and it runs on every platform availabe(Android, iOS, Linux, Windows, Mac OS etc.) I tested Desktop to playbook and galaxy tab to playbook and they both work excellently. I just wanted to let everyone know that we don't have to wait for skype (haha same day I posted this Skype works also) because ReelPortal works very well for the time being. Also, this isn't supposed to be an advertisement I am just really excited that my tablet has a new use!

Thanks for reading this and if this has already been discussed please feel free to do modify it in any way.

Hey michillin212, in addition to Skype and ReelPortal, you may even use other alternatives such as WebEx, GoMeetNow, Gotomeeting, RHUB etc.

I am playing it on my HD2 using Skyfire over 3G and even though is is straight from the website, the picture is not that bad ;-D
just seen your post man, Im still struggling to get this working. It "does play" in skyfire...but wow it is buggy as hell. Even over wifi (on my new hd2 )
It plays 100% on my mates gheyphone...which winds me up a little haha
I have nrgs rom installed which uses opera 10...but i read that you can use opera 9.7 with a flash fix...I wonder if that will make tvcatchup work with with opera rather than skyfire?

are they any good? have you checked out tvcatchup...got it working on skyfire via wifi...3g is no use (at least in my area). it seems they made a specific app/page for iphone users...the stream is prob tailored to their device/resolution...half the size of the hd2 (?) so it will look/stream a lot better over 3g (or at least this is what i think?)

As one of the Admin of TVCatchup let's face the facts:
http://m.tvcatchup.com/ has 28 freeview channels, for most phones including Windows Mobile 6.0 + Yamgo has 4.
Yamgo's quality is like watching something from the 60's, that is allowing for bandwidth problems as well. TVC has it's own optimised page offering low and high quality options.
Yamgo spam everything and make false twitter and facebook accounts and generally pee off everyone. We never spam and have built our membership by word of mouth and reputation.
We have open and free help forums that deal with issues right away, I once sent a support email to Yamgo and got a response four days later.
Sounds petty I know but we are trying to provide a service par excellence and of course I am biased, but it peeves you off with shafters like this.
Rant over !

Tango needs HTC EVO Beta testers.

Hi,
I work for Tango - the newest player in mobile video calling. Hopefully some of you have been able to play around with our app.
We released our application last week, and have been listening to users on some of the items we need to fix/improve with our application.
I am looking for 5-10 HTC EVO users that can help me out with beta testing our product.
The requirements:
1. You have a HTC EVO and feel comfortable installing Beta software on your phone.
2. You can devote 2-3 hours every few weeks to provide us feedback.
3. You feel comfortable having a video call with me (I promise I'm not that scary).
4. You will not share new features with our competitors.
I would prefer to find people who can test this weekend - we have a big fix regarding our battery consumption that we would like to release ASAP.
Please message me with the following:
1. Name/Email
2. Availability to test over the next few months
3. Experience with Android
4. Phone/Version/Rooted? etc.
Thanks!
Dmitry
I just used tango to video chat with my father. He has a new Evo and I have an Epic, it was great!!!
Wow! That was quick, already have 10 people signed up to test on the EVO.
I would like to find other phones to test with as well (especially Galaxy S), but if you feel very passionately that you can contribute to our beta testing, send me a PM and I'll try and add you to the list.
Thank you SO much!
is this better than skype
you have a PM sir
My wife and I have Evo's , both on Fresh rom. I could test if you want.
A couple questions....
Will Tango only video call/chat with other Tango users, or will it also be able to connect to Skype, Qik, Fring, etc..?
Will there also be a desktop version, for your computer? (This is mainly, if it will only connect to Tango users)
I ask, because I have a friend who has Skype on their computer. Skype blocks connection to Qik and Fring, and currently, iMovicha is only one way video (from what I understand).

You're spot on about Skype blocking connection to Qik and Fring - for this reason we won't be integrating into their platform.
We're hoping to get a desktop client sometime in the near future, but are focusing on the mobile arena first.

Makes sense... Thanks for the fast reply. Will the app be able to connect to any other desktop clients?
Well I tried Epic to Evo, Epic to Iphone4 and Epic to Droid tonight, all worked flawlessly! Really freakin cool! Never seen a video chat thing be so simple!
I wish I had someone to video chat with. My sister has the iphone 3g, and no one I know has an Evo. I'm going to buy one for my GF for her birthday but that's all the way in March.
I'm down to help.
This APP needs to stop running in the background sucking down the EVO's juice. Many people ran and tested this APP last week and just about all of us unistalled it due to MAJOR battery drain and that APP not closing. Fix those things and this thing will be golden, much nicer than Qik and Fring.
Yeah this App needs some work, but looks promising. Was trying to get it to work all day, but a lot of the times I was getting, connection too slow or some other errors - and this was on WiFi. Anyways, tweak the bugs out and sure looks like a winner
I would be down to test it..

How do I video chat between MT4G and iPhone 4?

I am sure this has been discussed, but i 0 results when I searched this forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php
And from Google search the only thing I found was an application called Tango but some said it wasnt possible :http://www.google.com/search?source...ideo+chat+from+MyTouch+4G+to+iPhone+4&qscrl=1
So, is Tango the way to video chat between MT4G and i4? If so is it the only way? Does it require wifi from both sides or just the iPhone? Thanks for any help, and sorry for asking this for probably the millionth time but I couldnt find the previous discussion...
Why don't you just try it? Like seriously you must be asking this because you want to video chat with someone that has an i4 so tell then to dl tango aand try it... like seriously. Wasting time looking for answers you could easily Come up with. Tango works great, the best imho but if you want to see other video chat services, search video chat or calling in market on both devices and look for common apps...

Yahoo Messenger, ooVoo, Tango are your options as of currently.
Thanks for the help. Also, what I'm doing is actually the opposite of "wasting time". My wifes mytouch arrives tomorrow or the next day, i thought I'd search around and figure out how to video chat before it came so I wouldn't waste time messing with various apps that may or may not work. When we both had vibrants we used fring, but since vibrants are such pieces of **** I wound up with an i4 and tmobile exchanged her piece of **** vibrant for a new mytouch. Incidentally, they told us just to keep the piece of **** vibrant, that's what a piece of **** the vibrant is, tmobile didn't even want to try to refurbish the piece of **** because it's such a piece of ****. I know the majority of this post is superfluous but I just hate the samsung vibrant with every fiber of my being I can't help bad mouthing it every chance I get. We went through 7 vibrants between us and not one had working gps.

Lol, sorry; someone bought mine for around $300 so im going to force my self to sell the wifes even though I know the gps will never work. Look for it on eBay soon it'll be a good starting price, and I think I have at least 1 or 2 extra samsung batteries I'll throw in along with a car mount and a class 6, 8 gb card if I can find it, plus a rubber case and an already perfectly applied screen protector and I guess I'll throw in whatever extra unopened screen protectors I have. I won't stet it at more than $150-$175

First, my sympathies to the OP. I returned the PoS Vibrant at 14 days, many thanks to this fine site for letting me know it was the model, not the sample I received (or its replacement).
I dredged through this forum, and did a search on the wider web trying to find a video chat app for my MT4G, and I didn't find any answer other than the quoted one (which left out Qik).
So. There are 4 options, and NONE of them will talk to any client but their own, is that right?
Which is another way of saying that the FFC is worthless.
Are the software makers such pinheads? The second someone <cough>Google</cough> comes out with video chat that works with Jabber (what Google's Talk uses and iChat can use), all the others become irrelevant. Jabber and Skype would support anyone I ever would video chat with and I'm not holding my breath for Skype to support video anytime soon.
Skype just recently bought out Qik (the video chat on MT4G) and it was announced (or leaked) that they are developing an Android version of their app that supports video calling. It was demoed on the HTC Thunderbolt but isn't available anywhere else yet. So I'm just holding out for Skype because like you said, that's all I would need.

First: Great news!
Second: I said it wrong. I should have said "Once support for Jabber and Skype comes out all the others become irrelevant".
Skype gets me to 1 person who I video chat with. Everyone else uses iChat, signing on to jabber.google.com.
And it was an overstatement for me to say that the FFC is useless w/o Skype or Jabber support. I've used it like a mirror a couple times.

Microsoft Office compatability

I'm looking to buy a Xoom when they're released in the UK, primarily as a netbook replacement for when I'm travelling overseas with work. Having never had an android phone I'm unsure of the options available for reading/writing Microsoft Office files such as Excel, Word and PowerPoint. Does anyone use their Xoom for editing these types of files? I could probably get away with some basic editing capability.
Thanks.
I use OfficeSuite Pro on my Desire HD and it works well with Office 2010 docs and previous. Don't know how it works on the Xoom yet as, like you, I'm awaiting the UK launch.
Thank you, I'll look into that then and in the meantime will appreciate comments on experiences so far from users with Xoom in hand.
Office use was one of my primary objectives too but so far I have been let down I bought Documents to Go since it has Word/Excel/PowerPoint capabilities but they are mediocre at best. PPT in fact is crap. But I will give the developers some time to realize that the Android tablet market is indeed worth developing for; after all, no company will invest time and money into a product that is brand-spanking new and still half-baked. Soon they should realize that the Honeycomb OS has a big follower crowd and then they'll port the mobile phone apps to a tablet (HD) version. Just hang in there but don't expect changes within a few weeks, i.e. don't trash your netbook quite yet!
From memory there's QuickOffice, Docs to Go, Office Suite, and another that I can't remember the name of that all (i think) claim to be able to edit and create office docs...
Haven't got my xoom yet so I haven't tried any with the xoom I'm afraid.
I think some sort of Lite version of QuickOffice comes pre-installed. Not sure it allows for editing though. The PPT application beats the paid Doc2Go though.
Thanks all for your responses.
Slightly worrying but not a deal killer, who wants something that works out of the box! I'm sure it will be sorted out soon, the way Xoom is touted as the grown up business users choice.
for me. I use the paid version of Docs to go. It's ok, like funnycreature said. Not perfect and PPTs definitely need work. there is a quickoffice application installed which will only open when you're opening a office document (via email, dropbox, etc). There's no way to start a new document. I believe there was an apk circulating though at one point.
Long story short, it's good enough for some very basic editing. I RDP'd once to do some real editing in powerpoint.

Skype android update to 2.1 still does not support video calls on Honeycomb tablets

Skype just updated it's android application to version 2.1 which now has support for 20 devices and support for video calls for devices running android 2.2+ :
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...ncluding-evo-3d4g-thunderbolt-sgs12-and-more/
I have an HTC Desire HD , did the update and in spite of only having one cam on the back, it is really supporting video calls as I made a test call and it shows the Desire HD's cam (in America HTC EVO) image ( I guess I have to put the device in front of a mirror if I want people to see me )
Anyway sadly enough it still does not support Honeycomb, thus our ASUS Transformer tablets, I perform the update on the ASUS Transformer, but still it doesn't show video conferencing options... Maybe this time some developer will hack it for us....
This is the only thing i envy ipads, they have facetime and we have nothing... well crappy gtalk and some other ones that nobody uses.
Update didnt change anything on my transformer or nexus one.. still no video call.

It took Skype over a year to come out with Ipad version, let's hope it doesn't take this long for HC...
I wouldn't get my hopes up. I read an article saying that they are now focusing their efforts on the Windows Phone platform. Makes sense since Microsoft bought them (/is buying them).
I wonder why Skype are so reticent to adding video calling to Honeycomb tablets. nVidia demoed Skype HD running on Tegra 2 back as early as January of this year. But I haven't heard anything since just the rather lame excuse of only having it supported on a limited number of Android devices and that more would be coming soon. When Google release Ice Cream Sandwich which is supposed to unify tablets and smartphones, I wonder what will happen then. Will Skype still be trying to switch video support on and off for different devices.

Forget mobile platforms, Skype can't even manage to code proper software on the desktop. Not only have they not made Skype compatible with most high-def webcams, they've actually gone out of their way to make it *incompatible* intentionally, with all but one specific brand's webcams.
Getting high-def video working on Skype for Windows is possible, but requires you to run an old version, avoid it getting automatically updated to a newer version, and then manually editing files to get it to accept the video feed at the right resolution.
Until they get their act together on other platforms, I really don't see things improving on Android at any significant rate.
The new skype app also has this annoying feature that everytime you get network connection it starts Skype by itself.
I used to be able to use "Kill Skype" to kill it, now I have to log out from Skype.

No, because google+ sucks and must be avoided.
However, I thought skype said it works on the Xoom ? So its just them slacking. And its very dubious programming behavior to check your app against a list to see if it works. - just do it right.

I myself do not think that Google+ sucks, in fact I find it quite good. But I am an old and regular user of Skype I even have paid packages to make skypeout calls and I have many friends and family members in Skype all living abroad, so the audio and video calls are truly a blessing and justified thing for me, not a luxury or a "nice-to-have" option. Right now, whether we like it or not, Skype is a much more popular, thus massive , platform than google talk or google+ , so it would really make my day when Skype brings video capability to Android 3.0+.
