Trying to go from Android 3.01 to 3.2 - Acer Iconia A500

I just purchased a new Iconia Tab A500 16G version. It came with Android 3.01. I have yet to setup a WiFi connection for home use. So I won't get OTA upgrades until I do. I started reading messages trying to figure out how to upgrade from 3.01 to 3.1 and finally 3.2. I looked at my "About" tab and found this info:
Kernel: 2.6.36.3-00001-944a8bac and Build: Acer_A500_1.145.09_COM_GEN1. Where do I need to go from here? Exactly what do I need to download and install? I have a Netgear Dual Router(2.4G and 5.0G) and a USB "N" stick. I just need to find the driver for the USB stick. Or download then from Netgear. While I work on that, can someone please tell me exactly what I need in the way of software? Considering what build I already have, what do I need to get me to Android 3.1 and 3.2? Or do I need to go that road? I know I can't get to 3.2 from 3.01. So please, someone - I'd really appreciate a little schooling.

Your tablet already has a WiFi adapter built-in, so you can toss aside the USB "N" stick. You can use the "Settings" app where the top choice is for "Wireless and networks". You should be able to muddle through setting up your wireless network, assuming that you have already set up the Netgear router with an SSID, protocol, and password. This will put you on the road to an OTA (over-the-air) update of your A500. Once you've connected to the web you can register your A500 and set up Gmail, etc.

That don't need to do anything - just set up the wifi connection and you should be automatically notified of the available updates. Bear in mind that you can't root the 3.2 that comes OTA.

[Q] Updated to 3.1 manually, didn't recieve dock update ?

Hi, I just recieved my transformer third replacement, and this unit is good, no defect whatsoever so far, but I powered it on, charged it, and I couldn't find any update to 3.1 OTA... So I applied manually the 3.1 update from asus website with a microSD.
Great now I am on 3.1...
But, I am not recieving the notification to update the dock ! Like I had on my previous transformers which updated over the air.
Is there any way to update the dock with a microSD card ??? Thanks a lot. I used the search engine but didn't find any answer on this topic.
I know my dock is not updated because when I press the spacebar it doesn't wake up the tablet's screen, and this particular behavior was present on my previous dock updated transformers.
Yes I don't recall the detailed steps offhand but you download the firmware update for the tablet from Asus's website and put it on SD card adn update that, then once it reboots it prompts you to update the dock. It was very easy and the steps are on Asus's site alongside the firmware downloads.

If your dock is already at firmware 209, there is no newer updates available. 3.1 did not come with a newer firmware for the dock (contrary to what was stated by ASUS on Twitter)
I just got my dock yesterday....it is 207 FIRMWARE and it is STILL at 207 even though I have 3.1 installed.
Can someone just simply the 209 firmware please?
All you need is here
http://www.asus.com/Eee/Eee_Pad/Eee_Pad_Transformer_TF101/
Also the 3.1 firmware isn't the same as the firmware for the device itself, and the dock, those are all 3 separate downloads.

As much as we appreciate the effort that you put into giving us that link.....there are NO firmwares there for just the dock.
Sorry.
You can downgrade to 3.0.13 which has the 209 firmware, or root and install Prime 1.4 which has the 209 firmware in the ROM.

VERY strange then since I am running the latest Prime 1.4. Still shows 207.

Why I can't update from 3.0.1 to 3.2

I purchased my tablet from US and I live in india. Only one time i was able to update when i run it first time, after than never got any message for update of Android Version.
When i go to Settings>About Tablet and click on System Update and check for new version it's gives me message "Your device is up to date" and when i see the version details than these are
Model Number : A500
Android Version : 3.0.1
Kernel Version : 2.6.36-00017-gc98d63f
Build Number : Acer_A500_1.016.01_COM_GEN1
Update is not available for india yet or where i am wrong please help.
Not sure if your locale has anything to do with getting updates. That's typically an issue with 3G providers, but as long as your tablet is an A500 (wifi only version) it should find the OTA updates no problem, that it unless you are running a custom ROM. Either way, you can manually update your tablet. All the information you need is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878
If you currently have a custom ROM or rooted your stock ROM, you will lose root by updating to a newer stock ROM, and the only way to recover root is by reverting back to Android 3.0. There are several custom ROM's based on 3.2 which already have root, if you also choose to go that route. If you have no idea what I mean when I mention root, just don't worry about it and carry on with that link I posted
Thanks Bloodflame, Yes i read that it can not be rooted and thank you for the link to get it update manually but i don't understand why i am not able to get updates.
And whether it is good to update with 3.0.2 ? Please suggest.

can't explain why you're unable to OTA update, but the security and performance improvements along with new features (ie, native mouse support) should make a manual 3.2 update worthwhile
Ok Thanks, I will update to 3.2 and let me see what magic it does.

US P7510 - Official firmware update P7510UEKMM - Honeycomb 3.2

Just received an official firmware update for my US P7510 via OTA:
Android version: 3.2
Build number: HTJ85B.UEKMM P7510UEKMM
For those having installed this. Does the "regular" root zip from CWM still work? I have a US 10.1 WiFi which I updated to UEKME before flashing XWKI2. I'm guessing this update will show up if I manage to return to UEKME, but I'll probably just wait for it to be posted here
I will get on this tonight
Send from my BinDroid Desire HD with Tapatalk
I just got mine OTA, too. It took quite a while to install after the download, and just as I was getting concerned, it finished. Everything seems OK. Now to go find out what's new/changed.
After updating to this firmware I cannot connect to my WLAN anymore (which was working properly before the upgrade). This is even true after doing a factory reset of the device.
Anybody else facing this issue ?
Update:
Issue is related to DHCP. After configuring a static IP it's working as expected.
Can't wait to get home from work to see if I'll get the update too. My tab is bought in the US, but is running Russian (?) XWKI2. Might have to re-flash UEKME to get the update I would think.

Thanks for the info!
I'm waiting for a cwm flashable zip. Installing an official update is way to risky if you want to keep your bootloader unlocked.
@WIFI Problem: What wifi channel are you on? If it's above 11, try something lower. It might be the regulatory domain (US= channels 1-11).
Thanks for the hint about channels but this doesn't seem to be the reason. I'm on channel 1 in the 2.4 GHz band + DHCP is also failing in the 5 GHz band
wifi probs
in the discussion of task's 3.2 rom on the development board there was some discussion of wifi problems, i think it was related to energy saving mode or something so maybe turn that off.

Android Version
3.1
Kernel Version

Just got off a live chat with Samsung. Here is an excerpt from the chat.
Visitor: I'm noticing many complaints on some message boards now about network issues with the new update. Are there problems with 3.2?
Rex: Let me give you a feew minutes while I check the information for you.
Visitor: I am able to connect if I set the IP to static. I can't do this for every network I connect to.
Visitor: I need to be able to use DHCP
Rex: I understand your situation.
Rex: Please give me a few minutes to check the information.
Rex: Thanks for the holding.
Rex: The problem is with the version 3.2
Rex: Please perform the hard reset on your tab once.

It appears there is still some work for Samsung on the 3.2 version.
I'll try the Hard Reset, but I'm not holding my breath it will fix this bug.

The only OTA update for US tabs is KME and now KMM. KG6 is not a US ROM hence why you have not seen an update.

Same problem here. I can only connect to wifi using static ip address. I also tried the factory reset and it did not work. It is really annonying not having DHCP working.
Screen auto-rotate is also not working!!
I hope Sammy releases a fix for this soon.
The fact that Samsung can release a firmware update that breaks some very visible features is completely mind blowing to me.
Update went well via Kies

[Q] no wifi at home.

hello,
I just bought a acer a500 tab.
I can connect at mcdonalds.
However when I try it at home using my linksys wrt610n it wont connect.
My wifi shows up but wont connect. I am using the correct password and I even tried it open unsecured still wont connect.
I tried reset button several times even when it was connecting.
It has been suggested to change channels but dont that didnt help on the wrt610n router. I am beginning to think the acer a500 and my linksys wrt610n router are not compatible>? Do you think if I go somewhere that has wifi that I can connect to and let it update from 3.0 to 3.2 it will help>? I have not put anything on the new acer a500 tab yet so should I try to do a factory reset?
edit: upon more searching I see that some have used the linksys wrt610n router with the acer 500a tab with little or no problerms.
I am very confussed because it works at mcdonalds so not sure if the problem is with router or acer?
So should I try the factory restore or return it for a refund because bestbuy dont have the acer 500a tab in stock any longer??
I would appreciate any help please..
thankyou, Dan
Why don't you root it and bring it upto the current 3.2.1 software. Then install the wifi fix if updating to 3.2.1 didn't help. Running such an old and buggy version of the OS will cause problems like your experiencing.

I would but if I root it then wont that void the warranty and I wont be able to return it>? What if I just go somewhere where I can get a wifi connection and let it update on its own?
thanks for the reply cruise350 I really appreciate it alot.
If I take it to a place where I can get wifi to update it from hc3.0 will it update to hc 3.1 or hc 3.2? I understand that people also had a problem with wifi when they went to hc 3.1 . Also how long does the update take can I do it while at mcdonalds? lol
thanks.
there is alos a wifi patch on acers website for older version of android 3.1 3.01 i think.. This was common that it would not connect properly with some routers.. older models mostly..
so upgrading to the rooted 3.2.1 will also likely fix this..

thankyou very much that is what I wanted to know that updating it would probably fix it.
I am new to this as this is my 1st tablet.
so what would be the best way to update it to 3.2?
should I find a wifi that connects and then let it update on its own and how long would that take approx?
Also will it update from 3.0 to 3.2?
thanks alot for the reply. erica-renee.
the full ccan be fairly large the patch is for wifi issues on older version . then you can run the update..
if you intend on rooting it in the future dont take the 3.2 update until you are sure... due to a boot loader change that makes it harder to root..
to install that patch from your usb drive .. you can use the app documents to go that is on your tab to browser to external storage and find the file.. because there is no fille mananger on the tablet by defalt..

I checked the patch and it is for 3.1 hc mine is at 3.0 so I would need to update it to 3.1 before I apply the patch. I am going to go over to my brothers house today he has wifi also maybe it will work over there and I am going to just update to 3.1 or 3.2 which ever it updates to. I will let you know how it turns out thanks alot everyone.
Good Luck i would almost sugest you read the threads about updating to a stock rooted rom...
you would have to do the fallowing
install iconia root and run it..
install acer recovery installer from market use it to install custom recovery
download a rom .. recomend the honeylicious rom.. from dev forum.
boot into recovery
wipe menue fallow instructions from rom post
format
flash
done..
this is all layed out clearly in the rom post in dev forums.. sorry i did not get back with you sooner on this option.. its much better then ota 3.2 update unless you will never want root.. if so there is a way to do that.. as well just more work..

Iconia rooting

Hello. Regarding my post here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=68019329#post68019329
I was searching for but I was not able to find how to update my android on A501 from 3.2 to newest one, so I have recently rooted and installed this A500 ROM with new android to my A501 device. It works well, but I was wondering if my 3G will be still working? As A500 doesnt have GSM function, so i was thinking maybe the firmware doesnt also have this option as well.
thank you.
