You've all seen the engadget and gizmodo reviews, but take this article: 6 reasons not to like the nexus one!? This guy made up his mind before he even picked up the phone, and then wrote his article based on other bias reviews.
There was also an article featured on /. regarding the support backlash but all it cites are random 'customers' getting bounced around, and doesn't corrilate a common problem or state what these 'people' were having problem with. However there does seem to be a real problem with 3g/edge flapping. If the article had been written as well as this random forum poster I would be fine with it, but instead PCW took the angle of FUD, and it just angers me.
...and then it hit me, this phone might just be the iphone killer and fanboys are actually getting scared. Thoughts?
"6 reasons to hate" is a hands-off schoolboy attempt at bashing.
he's just pissed he isn't important enough (or hasn't budgeted his finances) enough to have one handed him.
the other non-reviews are a farce. when there is a real, hands on, weekly use review of the nexus, i'll listen up. for now it's all M$ generated (and other mobile OS venders) fud that proves the nexus is awesome hardware, running awesome software.
sure, there are some what-ifs about verizon/att/whoever, but they're just carriers. dumb pipes. really really dumb pipes. we all know it's the hardware and more importantly the SOFTWARE that matters. the dumb pipe carriers are just mad they finally have a real reason to fear phones that are not chained to their crappy services and contracts.
let them whine. the fud is easy to cut through with logic.
I got the Nexus One. Your are correct, the only problem is the 2G/3G connection switching. The computing power of this phone is amazing.
I never like professional reviews for anything, movies, games or tech because theyre all just some one paid to write their opinion, and you never know whos writing their check, or their companies check. I do however like user reviews from people that paid for and really use the product, and I think those have been strong. I think the most important part of the "6 reasons not to like" article is all the backlash at the bottom and users defending the phone, shows how much people really like theirs already. I am really lovin this phone, also I havent had the 3G issues some have been having, I have a mytouch, G1 and N1, all on TMob and they all have 3G all the time for me, I think it really depends on the market cause if it was a hardware or software issue I would think everyone would have that problem
am I the only one who IS NOT seeing this 2G-3G problem? I mean I do see the 3G connection sometimes going from 2 bars to 4 bars in the same area, and In some places around where I live I can't get 3G coverage, but this is the EXACT SAME behavior I saw on my MT3G
First off, I have to say that I absolutely love the N1...I don't remember the last time I was this obsessed with a gadget both before and after I got it.
That being said, I was starting to get a little nervous while waiting for FedEx because of all the bad press I was seeing. But then I noticed that a large chunk of this press was generated by sites like macworld.com or other apple, iphone, mac related sites. While the N1 has some minor glitches(what piece of technology doesn't), this is mostly a case of fanboys feeling threatened because people won't be oohing and aahing over there iphone as much.
P.S. I came from a G1 and am seeing absolutely no difference/problem with my 2g/3g service.
These network issues seem to be only in the US.
Never had any problems in the UK with my iPhone/3G, G1, Hero.
But then again pretty much all the UK is 3G anyway
Clearly people are writing this phone off without even seeing/using it!
Was in work and two are big WinMo and iPhone fans and they even said a few hours after it was officially announced that the iPhone is better without even knowing anything about it! I then told them about the Snapdragon / 512mb ram etc and then they shifted it saying yer but Android is rubbish!
But in work their are also a few Android users (G1, Tattoo and Hero) and they couldn't wait to see what Android does and if anything from the N1 will get ported etc!
Its just like the good old which console is the best? 360 or PS3! You can argue all day but you will never win the argument!

The fact that "no multi - touch" is riddled on most reviews and that most people are referencing Engadget should make you realize the TERRIBLE shape electronic reviews are in.
Theres only a handful of people that know wtf theyre talking about. Im convinvec none of those people work at Engadget or the slew of other "tech review" sites Im reading. How do you review a product youve never touched ? How do you give a review based on anothers review ? Insulting a trackball ??
I mean jeez sound slike this guy would have his mind blown by a pair of AA batteries.

i agree completely. i have zero, ZERO problems with by n1 except for the dynamic polar clock of course. Google was very prompt with a return e-mail about the polar clock also. im very sure Google has an update soon for up to fix the polar clock and the 3g/edge switch issue. i seem to remember alot of bad press about the iphone when it originally came out also, as i recall it had alot of bugs. i guess this is "bad press" is our hater-aid and we should just drink up while the ifanboys drink their Apple kool-aid.

REMOVABLE BATTERIES?! NON-SENSE! (sarcasm)
I don't really get why people are bashing the N1. In the end, it's the same as the 3gs in terms of app placement- the hardware's faster than the other two models and developers have to make a choice of whether or not to take advantage of it- Android's made tons of improvements and now there's even fewer restrictions on the hardware (sold unlocked, super easy root)
I've loved my G1 for awhile and while it's a tank, I eagerly await getting the N1 at the end of the month as I've been able to toy with one (boss ordered after CES) and it pretty much lives up to all the hype.
I'm eager to get my hands on the section of the SDK that will allow for programming of live wallpapers- i love theming, and I can't wait to get a few of my ideas for a live background.

lol that 6 reasons article is definitly a Iphone user trying to give google and t-mobile a bad name, BUT im not to fond of them right now myself because of the whole family plan/Corporate discount thing which is keeping me from getting one cause im not spending 530$ haha.

The trackball comment sounded like it was pulled directly from the gizmodo review. The trackball does the same thing it has on every android phone, there's nothing to report here.
Those tech writer/review are dumb asses. Every new good potential phones that come out they write up a review or hand on and then compare it to the iphone and then they talk junk about it. Esp those engadget @sshole. For ex, when the N900 came out, they talk mad sh!t about it comparing to the iphone, well for once, if they were smart enough, iphone is up to 3.1 version, and maemo 5 is still not complete. And now the nexus, android os had about 1.5 yr to grow so far. Iphone os? Well maybe 3 now? Iphone didnt have mms til 3.0 comes out, those reviewer are a bunch of iphone fanboys who seriously cant stand the thought of a competing device that might have a chance to beat it. I rather read forums and base my buying decision than trusting some blog writing techy.

I had a discussion yesterday with one of my coworkers on that, because he's stuck on a family plan. But this is a t-mobile decision, and them doing what they've always done and screwing over existing customer in favor of new signups. I'd kinda like to see the churn numbers at tmo. In any event, its still cheaper to buy the phone outright and continue with my grandfathered plan, even further non-contract plans are still cheaper in the end, and tmo is the only provider currently offering this inside the United States.
I hate everything about my new super sleek, super fast N1. What I hate most is its speed. Actually, I think I hate its awesome screen the most. Or that it's too light and thin for the power it has. I also hate how easily my contacts, calendar and email sync seemlessly with my device. I hate the fact I have to use a top of the line browser when going online and I especially hate that all my music plays so well. Watching all those HD quality movies I've converted and watching high quality YouTube videos is so boring. I can't stand my desktop full of all those widgets that provide me with useful information and those folders keeping my apps sorted just get in the way. But--and here's the most important thing I hate about my N1--I hate that I can make phone calls wherever I am. I'd much rather my calls be dropped. And that's all before I even rooted it to get access to more stuff to make my N1 terrible.

But for anyone considering making the jump to Android, you need to keep one thing in mind: many of these early adopters have been using their iPhones non-stop for years. And it takes days, if not weeks, to unlearn your iPhone habits and judge Android on its own merits.
Imagine if you took a longtime Windows user and sat them in front of a Mac for a couple days. They’d probably complain about superficial things like the change in mouse acceleration and the “unintuitive” button placement (the Close button is on the opposite side of the window). It’s not until a week or two after you start using a Mac as your primary computer that you overcome these issues and begin to fully grasp some of the benefits it offers. No, it may not be for you, but there’s really no way you can tell for sure without taking the plunge and using one as your primary computer. It’s the same way with Android.

Why can't everybody be as open minded as this guy?
TechCrunch has been giving good press to the N1 sense before release, that and LifeHacker featured an article or two. It's not all negative, you just have to steer away from the fanboy sites.

Its kind of annoying but from me I can tell you is that I wanted an iphone sense it was released. I now have a G1 for about a year& I did plan to buy an unlocked iphone for tmobile. But after playing around with my ipod touch vs my G1 I realised that it wasn't really fun then I started hearing about the nexus one&after reading about it&seeing it in action the iphone doesn't even exist to me. Eventhough I kinda hate my g1(feels to bulky to me now) I now plan on buying a nexus the end of the month
So yup I was a hardcore iphone fan then out popped the nexus!
(So much more you can do with it. Vs iphone)

I said something similar to this in another thread... basically, how can engadget do a full review on a device they used for prolly a few hours? they had the bloody review up on the 4th of Jan, 1 day before it came out... how do you review a phone that is not out yet? a review should take at least 3 days of extensive looking at, otherwise call it like an initial thoughts review and then do a full review after you have given the phone a week or so of solid use...
i think adaptability to a phone is an element that many people do not realize, apple is king at this because their devices and software are so simple and straightforward... android takes some getting used to since there is navigation and lots of "room" on the device to make it your own... every iphone is the same with just different icons for different apps...

Certain people get the phone earlier for promotional purposes, and reviews. They, I'm simply assuming, had the phone for longer than atleast a day (pure assumption, but I know they did have it atleast before release - atleast they should have -). I do get your point though.

Great article, ive got 2 people switched from iphone to android so far and 2 more that are gonna get the Nexus, thats what i tell everyone, try it for a month then see if you want your iphone back, and they never do. One of my friends was tellin me at work a week or so ago that he wishes he listened to me earlier about goin Android, and he has a Cliq now, imagine if he had this beast haha.
I stopped by the Tmo store today to return a car charger they said would work with my N1; the rep was falling in love with my phone, when he mentioned how he currently has a Cliq and hates "that f**ing thing!".
It seems the press is being paid by "somebody" to write idiotic BS about the Nexus One. Meanwhile, everybody that lays a hand on it, falls in love almost immediately.
Things that make you go "hmmm..."
I haven't really had anybody stop and admire my Nexus yet. I sort of got my co-workers turned on to Android bragging about my G1/MyTouch etc, and they really were impressed with the phone. The main thing that is keeping people from making the switch so quickly is the lack of superb well designed apps. Yes, there are good apps on Android, just not enough and they often lack polish. Kevin Rose just did his review and it was pretty positive.

Been watching him since TechTV days and ((back then more than now)) he really seems to know his stuff. Somewhere along the way he reaaaallly became a hardcore Apple fanboy. Which is fine , he admits it. But his breakdown of why he didnt like Android/Incredible was just mind boggling.

I stopped watching/listening to Kevin shortly after he went to Rev3. When Patrick Leo and Kevin ran Screensavers it was fun and informative to watch.. RIP Screensavers. But now Even Tekzilla is more about bringing in the cash and showing high end devices and not enough geek gadgets and stuff. I could hang with Patrick on DL.TV but when he left there and joined the Rev3 gang he lost it. Every so often I'll tune into Rev3 and checkout a few vids, but for the most part I really don't enjoy it anymore, especially Kevin.

The one thing I agreed with was the way you select a spot in a paragraph and copy and paste, its definitely stupid.
It was really tough to watch someone with generally legitimate credentials (i never heard of him but i did some googling and whether we like it or not there a lot of people who dig the guy) to describe and complain about something he doesnt fully understand, for example:
He was complaining about, "I shouldnt need a task manager because there shouldnt be **** running in the background that i dont want running in the background". It sounds like a logical argument but isnt it true that those apps arent actually running, theyre just taking up some ram to get back to them quickly? Or are they really using battery? Because that too would be stupid.

Lol thas complete bs. I was the former owner of the iPhone 3g and 3gs and since i switched to android i've had eris, droid 1, N1, incedible, and now droid x, having said that, the only one i would choose the iphone over is the eris. All I see is the numbers, nothing about how they surveyed the people, how many people, and so on. I find that very hard to believe that 80% wouldn't buy another android phone. The iphone % I believe, since pretty much if you own an iphone you buy one every year, or you realise the mistake you made and move to another platform. Oh well, all the press is good news, Android is a viable enemy to iOS and the media and everyone else knows this now. You wouldn't have a survey even done if it wasn't.
Well I had the g1 for 2 years, and towards the end it really started to suck. It didn't have enough memory to run basic framework plus minimal applications. I always had Maps turning off the traffic due to low memory, and traffic checks are maybe the thing I use most often. ( I had ZERO anything on my homescreen as well, no apps, widgets, clocks, nada)
I went to iphone... HUGE mistake obviously (I could have figured it would be since I left iphone for android, but I thought I would give the 3GS a shot)
Then I came to the Nexus One and its uncomparable to either of these phones. If you are using a G1 on android 1.6 you really won't learn what Android is capable of, and you won't learn unless you get on a different device. Once I got to use the N1 and learn all the features of android, the G1 became more capable because I learned what it was trying to imitate. Widgets are one of the main features that make Android the winner. G1 Donut and hero/n1 Eclair are a Night and Day difference for me, and FroYo is amazing with the Dalvik cache and wifi-tether.
So, basically the majority of the people that say they would leave are on the g1 (or a similar, entry type) and don't really know what it is that they are missing.
Oh yea, and the article is BS...

i agree. if youre under 2.0, you wont experience the full android experience. to get the best feeling, 2.2 would be the one. this is where fragmentation is the issue
What really urks me is that there is not explination of the numbers, in either article they only say the numbers, not how the numbers were gathered or who was surveyed, as far as I am concerned the statement
"Android is the greatest mobile OS ever, iPhone cant even compare"
is just as plausible given the lack of evidence to support either my statement or their numbers.
Wow. As a show of how intelligent the sites readers are the whole comments section or an argument between fanboys in who will have more market share (the android guys side) and more profit ( the ios guys side).

As good old WM (6.x.x) is fading and WP7 won't compatible with older applications, I finally made a move and migrated to Android.
The first Android phone is nexus one, then you can imagine how high expectation I have with Android, and generally I think I made a right move.
Other than N8 (S60 cubic), the future smartphones will be Android 2.2+ based.
I love my n1 and would definitely get another android phone, once my nexus one dies or something worthwhile comes along to put my n1 into retirement.

What really pisses me off about this, is that there isn't A SINGLE BIT OF PROOF, no statistics, no evidence, no survey reports, nothing. And this thing is spreading, its the Android 3.0 rumors all over again, unsubstantiated rumors running freely on the internet, and no one is asking the necessary questions.
One question: why are we driving traffic to their site? Copy/paste the content and post it in your OP, then I might read it.

I just converted 3 people to android fanatics in the past month. And with the aria and captivate out for att I'm getting more people on the boat for it. My sister is far from technologically inclined and she still thinks her aria is easier and better than the iphone she almost bought.
I'm willing to guess that 100% of people at this forum would buy Android again We are hardly what I would consider an unbias source as we are browsing Android forums, clearly we love our devices.
I had a G1 for a year and LOVED it. Have had my Nexus One for around 2 months and I LOVE IT as well. If there was a Nexus 2, Id pick it up FOR SURE.
Too bad Google wont be doing another one. But that new 2ghz Motorola Android phone coming this winter sure sounds nice.
And yes, that article is PURE BS.

Eh, the article isn't pure BS. Obviously if you bring this article to Android forums you are going to find that a vast majority of the people will call the article BS and say they love their Android phone. The same thing applies if someone were to post this very article on Apple forums, people would agree and say they love their iPhone. Fan-sites for devices are the most bias corners of the internet.
Just because many people here love their Android phones doesn't just mean the article is BS. Thats one thing everyone needs to remember: anyone posting on a fan-oriented forum/site is going to have a bias toward their hardware. They are also the vocal MINORITY. 99% of customers never ever post on a website or forum about how much they love their phone. Thus, people on sites like these represent a tiny fraction of the real market opinion.

I was using windows mobile for a long time until finally making the move to android with the nexus one. I have no regrets, either. When Windows Phone 7 releases, though, I will probably move to them. And if they can't keep up pace with apps/updates/ect, I'll be back on Android. I wont be buying any Apple products ever. I do not like the way they do business.

Fair enough, but XDA isnt ONLY Android developement. As Android got off to a slow start, I would think its very fair to say that people who purchased Android phones in the past year (Droid, Nexus, Evo, Desire, ect) would be VERY likely to purchase another Android phone.
And Id be willing to bet it would be alot more than 20%.

Both android and iphone are great OS'.. It's just much simpler and refined iOS is compared to android.. I think the Galaxy s2 made it right out of all the android smartphones out there..

And also... We keep on waiting for the next iteration of android to work right.. We said that about gingerbread then honeycomb.. Lol.. Is honeycomb not that good either?
ios and android are just 2 sides of the same coin.
Android gives the user a more advanced and easily customizable interface as well as open source, minus side is stability and hardware/software compatibilty.
IOS gives you the security of a rock solid stable OS with the comfort of knowing your OS is built around your hardware, thus no incompatibility or unsupported features. downside is closed OS no source info apple controlled market and complete lack of customization.
Android = Mobile Technology Enthusiast
IOS = Business savy person, or parent, people who need to be 100% certain everything works 24/7 (or trend hopping teen)

I have an Imac and a self built windows 7 gaming rig, I love both
Mind you these are my opinions and as such yours may differ.
as a person who loves the best of both worlds i use Miui with the Vexillium Project icon set, this gives an iphonish polish and feel with the customization of android that i have grown to love.
Android is more for the tech savvy people, while apple is for people that don't really know much, with the iphone though, you don't get leaks, either your phone is supported, or its old and will forsure never get updates (apple).

I think it was best said by the first comment left (by Marcelo) on your article. Marketing! They make it look so pretty, so gleaming ,so slick, so simple to use. Kids want it, teens want it, Moms and Dads want it. Marketing! Its the one luxury that its in reach of the average American. Can't have a Mercedes like that guy, can't have a mansion like that guy , but hey he has an iPhone WTF I could get that! Marketing! We are a nation of consumers who are told what we want via a TV/Internet commercial. Marketing!

One area where apple has a big advantage is how easy it is to change themes or customize iphones. My buddy at work has an iphone 4 and it jail broke. Thru cydia he installed something call a dream board (or something like that). Thru that he can go from theme to them within a few seconds and there are zero issues. Also its super easy to change signal, wifi icons etc... Now us android usuers know what a pain it is to change almost anything on your phone. Finding something compatible with your rom, make a back up, flash, reboot, cross fingers , say a prayer and hope everything works like it should.

u can use the theme chooser from t-mobile on Gingerbread u cant root iphones and put custom roms on them

You can post it here. I enjoyed the article. It's different if your purpose was to sell something, but even if you had ads, it's not against the rules.
As for the topic:
My wife's sister is an apple iPhone convert to Android with the Galaxy S Vibrant. Observing her everyday dealing with the phone would come to the conclusion that the iPhone is just simpler. She had her iPhone before I met her, so I didn't get to see her initial learning curve into the smartphone arena. She often complained about the Galaxy's constant crashing, slowness, and terrible battery life. (She's the type of person who only charges once every three days). A custom ROM did not make things better, and shouldn't have to as she put it. She loves the Market and all of the nifty apps that she can download. She uses that often. She didn't have many apps on her iPhone.
It makes you think. I've found that a lot of features that I used apps for previously are built right in to the MIUI ROM and negates the use of an external app. I believe that a lot of features should be implemented into the OS, and should not require an external app, or custom ROM to access it. This is something that needs improvement. To me, an intuitive UI isn't only about being pretty, but being complete in the sense that I don't have to customize it in order for it to be fully functional.
iOS has superior apps, a superior user interface, a more battery-friendly design and superior media ecosystem (iTunes Store, etc.).
Even where the same apps exist, the iOS version is most often better.
Also, the build quality of the iPhone is superior to practically every Android device on the market. The only other smartphone I've owned that came close was the HD2 (boy has HTC gone down the ****ter since then?).
I simply can't deal with it because a 3.5" screen isn't enough for me. I need 4" at least on the screen. Anything less is not usable to me as a daily driver.

That's because it is pretty, gleaming, slick, and simple to use.
It's not marketing. Go to an AT&T or Verizon store and look at it.
It's so good, that even Samsung tried their damnest to copy the Look and Feel of it, and Android even borrowed many UI elements from iOS.
Lots of people got Vibrants preciecely because it was a 3GS look-alike with Android on it (skinned to look like iOS) and they didn't want to get AT&T's service to get an iPhone.

That's true to an extent. But not every android phone can run GB. So that's not an option for everyone. Plus apple os is pretty slick right out of the box. No need for custom roms.

In terms of build quality yes and in terms of efficiency their iOS is efficient but there phone is a nightmare for people with big hands which is why I generally see more women own iPhones and more guys own android phones
