I searched the forums and didnt find anyone with a similar issue so i hope somebody can help and that i havent indeed lost all of my contacts.
I updated to jf 1.51 when it came out and after a week of having it, it there was a lot of force closings and other small issues, plus i needed to change my email anyway, so i decided to do a wipe. When i turned the phone back on and tried to import my contacts they were all gone. The phone works normally otherwise, and even the messages that were saved to my sim are still there so i dont think my card is fried but i could be wrong.
Any ideas?
Did you sync your contacts with Gmail?

If you skipped the setup where you enter your gmail and password it won't sync your contacts. Try running setup. If for some really odd reason that doesn't work. Sign in to your gmail account on your computer and click on contacts, all your contacts will be there.
I did all of that, my gmail contacts are fine, im talking about my phone contacts.. like the 200 phone numbers i had. When i went to contacts, import contacts it said there were no contacts on my sim.

All my contacts, phone number, address, or just email, are all sync'd with Gmail. I'm not sure how it wouldn't be so in your case.
Hmm.. so i guess i should try doing setup all over again? Any way to do that without doing factory reset?

Why are you importing from SIM? Imprort from google. If you save them to sim, import from sim and then sync to google, you're gonna end up with a hella-mess-of duplicate contacts.

Ok, i was getting a little confused since i had already done what you guys were saying so i did this (checked online) and i didnt think about the fact i had changed my gmail account. All of my contacts are on my old account.
When i started the new acct i figured everything (contact wise) would still be on my sim from before so i wouldnt get double info when i imported but i also didnt think about everything being stuck to the old acct.

There is one thing that driving me nuts. Lets say I have a friend, whose names is John. In google, I have saved his email ID with name j.smith .. .. then his another email ID with johns .. .. and then finally his cell number with name john ..
After, I linked up all accounts in my HTC Desire People. I can see these three accounts in one single contact. Fare enough and perfect. But is there anyway, I can merge these three accounts into 1 so that it is synced to my Google Account and to my HTC Contacts?
Not sure if I understand correctly what you want to do but its something I've struggled with as well. There was a perfect app for this on iPhone/iOS but I have yet to find anything that comes even close on Android. Try Contacts Analyzer available on Market but it's dismal. Doesn't allow you a preview of the changes you're about to make before you commit them!

Gmail Contacts
Your best bet is to just do it in Gmail from your computer, then let the phone sync. It's easy and you will have them all in the same format, and you can add pictures for caller ID, etc.
You're in trouble if you have 1,000 contacts like I used to...the idea I think is to use an app that auto-works and gets the job done as a batch without you having to edit every single contact...then you can sync to Facebook and pull in some photos IDs...

Anybody knows of an app that merges / joins contacts?
HTC Sense has this function if you know what I mean, sometimes a chain-link icons shows up in the notification area.
I´d like to have an app that does this on a batch basis so that I can chose to do so for all my contacts instead of merging / joining one by one.
I know I can do this one by one. Go contacts Ex gives this function without doing it for everyone at one batch job. You have to acceppt one by one...
I am using , Google, ActiveSync, Facebook, Whatsapp etc. contacts
Ideas?

This. Plus there is an option on Gmail to merge duplicates so you can at least have google do most of the sorting and merging for you. And if possible, don't let any HTC app mess with my Google contacts.

I think that's the most important idea about merging. My opinion's that any given app could mess things up and leave you with a lot of different linked contacts. Personally I prefer to edit all my contacts at my Gmail account so that I don't have to merge them again everytime I flash another rom for example.
If you're willing to take the time and patience for it it'll pay off to manually manage your contacts at Gmail.

I've been searching that function for long time since I moved from the stock sense rom to others, and still no app is giving me this. I even tried a lot of different contact manager but no one works really well.
About G contacts: I really care to keep the list "clean" and every contact linked with whatsapp, email, facebook etc, but sometimes it just lose the info, even if I've just merged that contact with the app I'm currently using (I'm running MildWild) and rsynced the G account.
Try Go Contacts Ex (free), it has various functions on merging contacts (by number, email etc.)

I think you should sync with gmail.
In sense I was used to have all my contacts shown with their facebook information within their phone numbers (I just need to pair them first on winmo).
I tried some sense Android build and I still have all the number connected to my facebook account, now I put on a senseless build that is 10 time faster so I'd like not go back to sense, but I miss that function, to have facebook pictures of friend, and birthday and their updates all bound to phone numbers..
All I have now is a contact list with my own names (they are not listed with name/surname) with phone numbers and all real names from facebook without numbers and only the email.
Is it possible to merge them again like in the sense contact list? someone knows how to do that?

Short answer: no
Long answer: In pursuit of same solution, the best i came up was to merge facebook with gmail, leaving out facebook in the phone alone. There's few ways to do it, but the easiest and most reliable I found, was to get yourself yahoo.com mail, pull facebook contacts into it using the integrated tool that they have (gmail should make one too :/) and then merge it back into gmail using gmail tools. This method however leaves out pictures. So to rectify that, get yourself a free app on market called "SyncMyPix". It will match your (now updated) contacts to facebook and get pictures. It's not perfect - resolution is smaller and you get F in the corner (Facebook F), but it works.

That about sums up what i did. The pictures dont matter. Once you put the combined contact info together then import in gmail, open the facebook app and sync all, the pics then show up on the phone in contacts.

Nice find, guys! I've been looking for this for a loooong time.
My FaceBook contacts keep giving me an error when trying to sync them? Everything else Twitter Myspace Google Gmail etc etc sync just fine. is anyone else having this issue? Can someone please force a sync and see for me its driving me insane I rely on that for my contacts

I have found that you must sync through contacts instead of settings for it to actually connect and sync/link them. Go to contacts ->Menu ->Accounts ->Add Account. Then add an "Integrated Contact Account" at the top. Once it's added, click on Menu-> Get Friends.

This technique does not work. I have tried every possible way multiple times. Ticking facebook to "get friends" does not even do anything. Doing research about this problem with other phones seems to point toward FB servers as the problem. Pretty much FB = epic fail. I have only gotten my FB contacts to sync twice but it never updated - one was right when I got the phone but did not like the epic syncing 390430.39 contacts to my gmail (since there is no option to choose what to sync or even what groups to export!!! annoying i decided to do a hard reset). I had my fb contacts sync one more on my 3rd hard reset but i had to do yet another HR to clear a notification error due to conflicting apps. Now I am about to do my 5th. FML!
I wish FB would actually announce their issues
my voice search has stopped working other than opening browser to google. no calls, no music search, no nothing. apparently you have to sync ur contacts with google for the voice search to analyze your contacts to find the one to call. You can not have them stored to your phone group. switched all my contacts over to my google group and nothing happened. I was hoping maybe it would and that would also be why fb would not sync. guess not.
Mine synced today after turning on 4g for awhile.

It doesn't sound like a FB issue as mine synced immediately after doing what I outlined and has stayed since.

I think you trying that technique and getting it to work was just timing. I just checked to see if I can add contacts from my FB and it is the first it let me in a week trying every day. Has to be server side. People from other carriers and phones were reporting the same issue...

People reported success with this technique on other forums too, where going through the actual settings didn't work for them. IDK, it's whatever...
I'm sort of having a similar problem, except with MySpace, I haven't been able to log in since I got the phone. Any suggestions? I've tried it on both wifi & 3g (no 4g where I live) have flashed different roms and gotten the same result. Any ideas?
Did anyone find a way to sync back facebook information to google contacts? If you get birthdays, email and phone numbers from facebook in your phone, it would be great to have that back in google contacts when using the desktop.
Even when properly linked, this kind of information is only in the phone and gets lost, when you loose a contact as facebook friend.
Did anyone find a way to sync it back and preserve this information?

Hm i think that you shoud sync phone contact with facebook, using Facebook aplication from market, and then try synching phone contact with google, I think this will work. Cause it works both ways, Google -> phone an Phone->google. Then if your contact list in the phne doest include contact photos from facebook, you should google for aplication Facebook Sync, or try to find it on market, this aplication will sync contacts photos, based on name comparisn. I hope this will help you.
Unfortunately that's what doesn't work at all. It should in theory.
But Facebook information is not synced back to Google Contacts this way. It's only in your phone. If you loose the facebook friend or they just deactivate their profile, you will loose the facebook link and the bits of info (email, phone numbers, birthdays) that may come with it.
It looks like the facebook info is not stored in the phone contact application (htc's 'people' app), but in a separate data base. It's really just a 'link' and nothing else. To be fair, it doesn't look like a pure htc sense problem, as stock android also doesn't do it.
the cool thing to do is to have an app that will copy the facebook info permanently to the contacts

Hey I've managed to sync facebook birthday data about my friends into google account with app called EboBirthday Sync, it is free on market, and download a plugin EboBirthday Contact Sync too.
Thanks for the tips! Now we just need something to sync back emails and phone numbers from facebook back to google contacts.
There is today an article in golem.de, a german online magazine, that google would love to connect a new service called Google Me with facebook contacts and data. They are asking for facebook to open up for that.
Lol, what a joke! We have that data already in our google phones. Just add the option to sync it back to Google Contacts for gosh's sake!
No need for another 'buzz' or 'wave'.

Facebooks TOS does not allow for that, that's what they want Facebook to open up.
Any source for that info? I mean, the facebook info is in our phones already.
Is that not a violation of the TOS then also? I just want to have a backup of that data.
And if google can't do it, some modder should be able to, no?

I'm using SyncMyPix to sync facebook photos with my contacts, seems to work okay, found on Market.
3 years gown the road - has anything changed? No!!
It's end of 2013 now, more than 3 years and the problem still persists.
Whenever I set up my phone or flash a new ROM, Facebook will mess up my phonebook with duplicate entries for the same person.
Did anyone find a way meanwhile, to extra emails and phone numbers from the Facebook contacts and sync them back into Google Contacts?
I can't believe this annoying problem hasn't bothered any capable programmers until now?
