Hi,
There is one thing that driving me nuts. Lets say I have a friend, whose names is John. In google, I have saved his email ID with name j.smith .. .. then his another email ID with johns .. .. and then finally his cell number with name john ..
After, I linked up all accounts in my HTC Desire People. I can see these three accounts in one single contact. Fare enough and perfect. But is there anyway, I can merge these three accounts into 1 so that it is synced to my Google Account and to my HTC Contacts?
Not sure if I understand correctly what you want to do but its something I've struggled with as well. There was a perfect app for this on iPhone/iOS but I have yet to find anything that comes even close on Android. Try Contacts Analyzer available on Market but it's dismal. Doesn't allow you a preview of the changes you're about to make before you commit them!
Didn't help that .. :s
Gmail Contacts
Your best bet is to just do it in Gmail from your computer, then let the phone sync. It's easy and you will have them all in the same format, and you can add pictures for caller ID, etc.
You're in trouble if you have 1,000 contacts like I used to...the idea I think is to use an app that auto-works and gets the job done as a batch without you having to edit every single contact...then you can sync to Facebook and pull in some photos IDs...
Hi,
Anybody knows of an app that merges / joins contacts?
HTC Sense has this function if you know what I mean, sometimes a chain-link icons shows up in the notification area.
I´d like to have an app that does this on a batch basis so that I can chose to do so for all my contacts instead of merging / joining one by one.
I know I can do this one by one. Go contacts Ex gives this function without doing it for everyone at one batch job. You have to acceppt one by one...
I am using , Google, ActiveSync, Facebook, Whatsapp etc. contacts
Ideas?

This. Plus there is an option on Gmail to merge duplicates so you can at least have google do most of the sorting and merging for you. And if possible, don't let any HTC app mess with my Google contacts.

I think that's the most important idea about merging. My opinion's that any given app could mess things up and leave you with a lot of different linked contacts. Personally I prefer to edit all my contacts at my Gmail account so that I don't have to merge them again everytime I flash another rom for example.
If you're willing to take the time and patience for it it'll pay off to manually manage your contacts at Gmail.

I've been searching that function for long time since I moved from the stock sense rom to others, and still no app is giving me this. I even tried a lot of different contact manager but no one works really well.
About G contacts: I really care to keep the list "clean" and every contact linked with whatsapp, email, facebook etc, but sometimes it just lose the info, even if I've just merged that contact with the app I'm currently using (I'm running MildWild) and rsynced the G account.
Try Go Contacts Ex (free), it has various functions on merging contacts (by number, email etc.)
Thanks, this works nearly perfect.
Mine im using contapps free from market, try it if you want too! ̄ω ̄

I think you should sync with gmail.

Or I don't know how to use it properly. I go into my contact list and hit the groups tab. I create a new group and hit save. It doesn't show up. I then try to create it again and it says it already exists, but still doesn't show up.
Even the default groups that show up (google and something else) I can't figure out how to add someone to that group. Does anyone know how to get this function to work properly?
I haven't got it to work either.

To add member on the default group, all your contacts must be stored in the phone memory. If its not there, then you need to export your contacts first then import them back but make sure you import them to the phone memory.
But be aware that you will have multiple entries on your phone book especially when it was originally synced to gmail.
It's a vexing issue and a bit complex to fix manually. But...there's an app for that..
search the Market for "Groupy"
I have to say that sucks. when an android with google doesnt grap your contacts the way you have them on your google account.. that just sucks.
this is the first time I have ever complained about this phone. or maybe its samsung that I should be complaining about. but one of the reasons I started using android was the easy way to manage contact information. that is just something that should not be messed with.
k.. done *****in
What I found after doing a factory reset was that *if* you manually made a few contacts on the phone and placed them in categories and *then* sync'd google contacts they would import correctly.
But still it's an annoyance easily fixed by "Groupy" in about a minute.

Absolutely! The Contacts app that Samsung installed in place of the regular Android Contacts app totally hoses the Google-based contacts. I am swamped by unwanted download of a "contact" item for anyone who ever mailed my GMail address, and Google contact groups are not supported. The stock Android Contacts app handled this gracefully, allowing configuration of which groups of Google contacts get downloaded and synced. But Samsung tried to de-Google Contacts, and screwed everything up.
Is there any hope of reinstalling or renabling the original Android Contacts app instead (hopefully without rooting the phone)? Perhaps a third-party solution?
Try third-party app called Contacts Evolved
I have been exploring third-party contact apps in Market.
At first blush, the free app called Contacts Evolved seems to help here. It does segregate the contacts downloaded from Google according to the Google/GMail groups (including starred contacts) into handy tabs. The spurious contacts such as those who just happened to send you mail will still be there, but if you keep your real Google contacts organized into groups, the groups will be respected and displayed separately in the app.
I don't know of any way to disable or uninstall the brain-dead Samsung Contacts app, which I believe handles the syncing. But AFAIK, I never have to use it and can use Contacts Evolved instead.
EDIT: On the downside, Contacts Evolved seems a little buggy. There are force-close issues.
In sense I was used to have all my contacts shown with their facebook information within their phone numbers (I just need to pair them first on winmo).
I tried some sense Android build and I still have all the number connected to my facebook account, now I put on a senseless build that is 10 time faster so I'd like not go back to sense, but I miss that function, to have facebook pictures of friend, and birthday and their updates all bound to phone numbers..
All I have now is a contact list with my own names (they are not listed with name/surname) with phone numbers and all real names from facebook without numbers and only the email.
Is it possible to merge them again like in the sense contact list? someone knows how to do that?
thanks for reading
Please help someone.... i need an answer too....
Short answer: no
Long answer: In pursuit of same solution, the best i came up was to merge facebook with gmail, leaving out facebook in the phone alone. There's few ways to do it, but the easiest and most reliable I found, was to get yourself yahoo.com mail, pull facebook contacts into it using the integrated tool that they have (gmail should make one too :/) and then merge it back into gmail using gmail tools. This method however leaves out pictures. So to rectify that, get yourself a free app on market called "SyncMyPix". It will match your (now updated) contacts to facebook and get pictures. It's not perfect - resolution is smaller and you get F in the corner (Facebook F), but it works.

Edit Contact -> Join/Merge (Cant remember)... I join/merge my saved contacts with facebook contacts always. Using senseless build.

That about sums up what i did. The pictures dont matter. Once you put the combined contact info together then import in gmail, open the facebook app and sync all, the pics then show up on the phone in contacts.

Nice find, guys! I've been looking for this for a loooong time.
Just wanted to know which was better and why. I have a samsung I9000

well if you save to google, and then you get a new android phone your contacts are always there when you login to your google account from your phone. i always save to google
save it on google. If anything happens to your phone, you will not need to worry about losing your contacts. It'll always be there and it's easier to edit contact on Google anyways. This is also helpful if you switch roms a lot. You wont have to copy out your contact and copy it back in everytime.
With applications like Google Sync, I was able to take my contacts and import them into my old Blackberry. When switching to my Android phone the import of contacts was automagical.
Save it to Google, and then export from there into a csv file an additonal backup.
My only issue with saving to Google is you can't assign custom ringtones to non-phone based contacts =/
Anyone know if this is fixed in 2.2?
I've lost my iPhone couple weeks ago and thanks gods all my contacts were in clouds!

What do you want the ringtone for if it's not from a phone?
Another reason to like google vs phone ... It's damn convenient to add a contact on the web page as needed, especially if someone emails you the information and you can just copy&paste it.
I've used Google for mine ever since I bought the G1 when it came out. Come to think of it if I wouldn't have I'd probably not have all of my numbers.
Good stuff.
One question
I synced my contact to my Google account, and since it is syncing, if I accidentally deleted all my contact in the phone, it will probably delete the contact in my Google account too, right?
Or it can restore the backup?

Uh...I think the OP was referring to the difference between the Google contacts and the phone contacts. Meaning that you cannot set ringtones for Google (non-phone) contacts, not contacts without phone numbers.
Although, if there is one thing I really miss from when I initially switched from a Blackberry to the G1, two years ago, was being able to basically setup "filters" for incoming calls, emails and SMS, a customize how each filter was handled.

Depends on the definition of "deleted"...
I don't think it is even possible to accidentally delete all of your contacts. They could be erased by some external means or memory failure, but the sync algorithm does not see that as a delete. A delete is selecting a contact and selecting "delete contact" from the context menu.

Accidentally Delete means someone press delete all on the phone..
The sync will not remove contact from google if you delete from phone. As for ring tone, we'll just need some dev to port stock android contact over. In stock android contact you can set ring tone for individual contact without having the contact on the phone.

Sounds like google is the way to go but how do I get my numbers in "groups" if its linked to google, such as doctors, freinds, family, work? I see that the google ones are a group themselves

You can use backupify, com to backup your google contacts at certain intervals.
That's a nice option to have if you ever accidentally delete your contacts.
If you delete a google contact from your phone it WILL be deleted off of your account. It is a two way sync.

Not directly.
There is no way to sync a phone contact to your Google contacts. You will have to create a separate Google contact.
I think a previous commenter gave the best advice to just use a ROM that has the vanilla android contact app. I think the TWIZ hybrid ROM has the vanilla contacts app.
I have the same complaint. I trying to hold off until there is a vanilla FroYo before using a custom ROM.
Does this mean that none of you are saving your contacts to your sim card?

That's the least advanced way to save a contact because you can only have a name and number, that is all.
I use to save all contacts to sim with my old phones. As soon as I started using my google account I stopped saving to the sim. Mind you I've been with t-mobile for five years with the same sim.

Hi,
I have a HD2 running gauner's Desire HD ROM (magldr), and I want to try and windows 7 ROM but i cannot find any way to transfer my texts and contacts over.
Anyone find any ways to do this ?

If they are Google contacts then that's easy and happens automatically when you sign into your Google account.
I am however in the same boat of trying to migrate my call history and text messages.

Hey, yeah i've got the contacts via google which is working great, now just for the messages, not so bothered about call history.
Just one other thing, i've synced with facebook, but I want to remove all my facebook-only contact from the people contact book, any way to do this?
Cheers

I ran into this same thing and I don't think you can avoid it other than NOT signing in to Facebook in the contacts section. there is a Facebook app in the Market if all you want is to be able to check Facebook on your phone.

In the settings, there is the people application settings menu. It will sync only existing Facebook contacts.
Hi all,
Maybe I haven't enabled some setting (still new to the android game, even newer to the Timescape UI) but is there some way to search and link your phone contacts to facebook friends?
I've seen this integration being done using a built-in HTC feature.. wondering if there's something similar in Timescape that i've just missed.
Go to Contacts --> Settings --> Accounts & sync
There you can add your Facebook account

how do you guys get status updates to sync with contacts? i can get twitter updates to sync, but not facebook.
hey thanks for that guys.
@ thomassafca: yep i've done that, but what i mean is an app that runs through ur contacts, compares them to your facebook contacts and suggests whether u should merge the two.. not sure if that's what's happening atm tbh LOL but so far it doesn't look like a lot of contacts have fb details.
@androhero: thanks will give that a go, sounds promising.
haha tried life.contacts but if your contacts don't have the same name (e.g. first and last; most of my contacts in my phone are nicknames / first names only) it doesn't play too nice. would be great if you hv a clean contact list though, thanks for the heads up.
also (i'm an idiot) if you long-press a contact name in contacts it pulls up the context menu where you can select 'join contacts'. not quite what i was looking for (an automated suggestion app) but it'll do for now.

life.contacts works great, as long as the first name of the person in you contacts is exactly the same as there first name on facebook
hey! if you're still looking for a way to merge phone contacts with facebook IE their picture or status, what i did with mine was go into contacts, click on a contact and select edit. once you're in the editing screen for the contact press the menu button and at the bottom of the screen it will say join with two funny looking arrows..and then if your contact name is similar to any of your facebook contacts, it has that persons profile and you just select it!
if you know the person's on facebook and it doesn't show their name, sometimes you can edit the phone contact so it has the same name as their facebook page and join the two, then rename the contact in your phone so not every person has a first and last name lol.
hope this helps!

I second this as Life.Contacts widget/account-sync does work. However, I would just as soon have native Facebook sychronization. It works on my Thunderbolt, it works on my Moto Droid A855 (OG Droid), it works in my dev environment Android Emulator. _WHY_ Doesn't it work on the Xperia Play? Even on the "stock" Android 2.3.2 on the Verizon version (R800x). The facebook app works fine, except it has no settings under the "other settings" option inside the app, and if you try and add an account listing under your system Accounts menu, it just goes right back to the account list.
(Also, no it is not moved to SD, installed to a SD-Ext partition or anything else, just normal internal storage install directly from the Android Market)
Anybody have any ideas as to why?
Why would anyone want to put there phone numbers and personal contact data on facebook? That is just stupid. Why not just post your credit card information while your at it?

No, we are not putting phone numbers and personal contact data on facebook. It is putting facebook data on your phone.
For example. I have a friend John Doe in facebook. He is also in my phone. When he calls me, his facebook photo automatically shows up. Same for all other friends.
It's nice to see new facebook profile pictures when people call me.
I c. But there are to many people in my Facebook that I wouldn't want on my phone. A lot of them I don't even know. They just add me because we know someone in common. LOL
I had a similar problem with gmail on my iPhone all of a sudden I had everyone I ever emailed on my phone. Even people I only emailed once to buy something on kijiji.

That is why you just integrate the facebook info with only people from your contact list.
