Hi all,
Maybe I haven't enabled some setting (still new to the android game, even newer to the Timescape UI) but is there some way to search and link your phone contacts to facebook friends?
I've seen this integration being done using a built-in HTC feature.. wondering if there's something similar in Timescape that i've just missed.
Go to Contacts --> Settings --> Accounts & sync
There you can add your Facebook account

search the market for life.contacts by sony ericsson, it's a gr8 app and lets you sync contact with facebook, it also emails you if you miss a call or text

how do you guys get status updates to sync with contacts? i can get twitter updates to sync, but not facebook.
hey thanks for that guys.
@ thomassafca: yep i've done that, but what i mean is an app that runs through ur contacts, compares them to your facebook contacts and suggests whether u should merge the two.. not sure if that's what's happening atm tbh LOL but so far it doesn't look like a lot of contacts have fb details.
@androhero: thanks will give that a go, sounds promising.
haha tried life.contacts but if your contacts don't have the same name (e.g. first and last; most of my contacts in my phone are nicknames / first names only) it doesn't play too nice. would be great if you hv a clean contact list though, thanks for the heads up.
also (i'm an idiot) if you long-press a contact name in contacts it pulls up the context menu where you can select 'join contacts'. not quite what i was looking for (an automated suggestion app) but it'll do for now.

life.contacts works great, as long as the first name of the person in you contacts is exactly the same as there first name on facebook
hey! if you're still looking for a way to merge phone contacts with facebook IE their picture or status, what i did with mine was go into contacts, click on a contact and select edit. once you're in the editing screen for the contact press the menu button and at the bottom of the screen it will say join with two funny looking arrows..and then if your contact name is similar to any of your facebook contacts, it has that persons profile and you just select it!
if you know the person's on facebook and it doesn't show their name, sometimes you can edit the phone contact so it has the same name as their facebook page and join the two, then rename the contact in your phone so not every person has a first and last name lol.
hope this helps!

I second this as Life.Contacts widget/account-sync does work. However, I would just as soon have native Facebook sychronization. It works on my Thunderbolt, it works on my Moto Droid A855 (OG Droid), it works in my dev environment Android Emulator. _WHY_ Doesn't it work on the Xperia Play? Even on the "stock" Android 2.3.2 on the Verizon version (R800x). The facebook app works fine, except it has no settings under the "other settings" option inside the app, and if you try and add an account listing under your system Accounts menu, it just goes right back to the account list.
(Also, no it is not moved to SD, installed to a SD-Ext partition or anything else, just normal internal storage install directly from the Android Market)
Anybody have any ideas as to why?
Why would anyone want to put there phone numbers and personal contact data on facebook? That is just stupid. Why not just post your credit card information while your at it?

No, we are not putting phone numbers and personal contact data on facebook. It is putting facebook data on your phone.
For example. I have a friend John Doe in facebook. He is also in my phone. When he calls me, his facebook photo automatically shows up. Same for all other friends.
It's nice to see new facebook profile pictures when people call me.
I c. But there are to many people in my Facebook that I wouldn't want on my phone. A lot of them I don't even know. They just add me because we know someone in common. LOL
I had a similar problem with gmail on my iPhone all of a sudden I had everyone I ever emailed on my phone. Even people I only emailed once to buy something on kijiji.

Because your only meant to add your friends. People go crazy and add anyone they can its up to them.

That is why you just integrate the facebook info with only people from your contact list.

Title says it all...in the All Contacts Updates tabs it's not showing the option to link all contacts with my Facebook.
It works when I do it manually, but I obviously don't want to go through 250+ contacts and link them one by one.
Anyone had this problem or know how to fix it?
I dont think it's a problem as such, rather just the way it is!
I agree though it's a mission to link them all, and TBH it's not worth it..... I've linked mine and none of the automatic updating of profile photo's, status', or events works unless i press update on each contact manually!!
Others are having the same problem and so far no solution

Same here, and only 2 of mine wouldn't link automatically. 1 of them uses a different name on facebook than in real life and there's no email address for her, and the other one has a double-barreled surname and he only uses the 2nd part of it on facebook.
I've found the facebook integration pretty much perfect and have none of the issues that others have reported. It updates for me on a very regular basis, both status updates and contact photos.
To make sure it works fully, just make sure that your contacts have email addresses that match their facebook account emails. That way, it can match the majority of them with no problem.
Yeah it would be really nice if it could link contacts to facebook itself but that would require that all your facebook contacts have chosen to show their phone number in their facebook profile and allow everyone to see it. That is highly unlikely that all your contacts would do that.
Another possibilty is maybe to enter peoples facebook mail in your Contacts. However, I dont store email adresses in my Contacts.
Therefore you need to link manually. However, I miss a feature to backup the link when you install a new ROM.

Yeah, but not all people save email adress in their Contacts.
Yeah I just went through and manually linked like 100+ of my contacts.
When I go into each contact's Facebook link page it automatically suggests the correct person to link to. The issue is not that it can't match up the contacts with my Facebook friends, it just doesn't show the option to do it all at once.

Read my first post - thats why I write it would be impossible to make a link unless the facebook contact has entered his/her phone number and made it avaiable.
back to the OP, was this resolved because I have the same problem, it doesnt show the link all facebook option in the updates and events part, just my facebook profile pic and when i press it it goes to my updates? How do i get this option to link all because i cba linking 200+ contacts?
Mine linked 39 contacts to Facebook automatically and seems to do it by name (since I don't have emails stored for them).
Shame it doesn't fetch any telephone numbers listed on their Facebook profile though.
Mine only did 2 or 3 automatically. What annoys me the most is that the Facebook link only updates HTC Contacts automatically, to save the information to Outlook Contacts you have to go in manually - and this means that when syncing via MyPhone or ActiveSync the pictures and birthdays etc aren't always synced.
And not adding birthdays to the calendar automatically bothers me too.

Maybe not before it became normal to send and receive emails on phones, but it's very common now, so I'd imagine more and more contacts are getting email addresses added to them.
It's the most obvious way to link a contact to a facebook account, after all, it is what you sign into facebook with! And as you yourself pointed out, not many people have their phone number publicly available on facebook, and quite right too!
If they're your friend on facebook then you've got their email address. Just add it to the contact details and it works.
Anyone experience this problem where after u link a particular contact to his/her facebook, the whole phone becomes very laggy when u try to edit the contact info again? Any solution to this?
Hi, I have another problem with FB on HD2. I added some new friends and I try to link them manually but they are not shown in my list for choosing FB link(when I try to edit contact options and link it with FB account). If I start FB client however the new friends are there. Another problem is that I have deleted some friends and they are still listed as friends on my FB client.
Anyone can help?
Cheers
I found a solution in my case.
I had the exact same problem, and then I found that in "All Contacts" if I go to the "Updates and Events" scroll-tab in the bottom I can select to link multiple accounts, and voila - all is well. It even auto-detected all of them:
I cant find that " .. to link multiple accounts"
Nope nor me!
I'm able to join the Facebook contacts with my Google contacts, but no matter what I do, it always seems to change my contact's name to display what they have on their Facebook. For example, my mom and dad both have Facebook accounts, and after joining thier profiles, it doesn't show them as "Mom" and "Dad", but as their names. It's kind of annoying, because now whenever I try to find them, I have to look under their names. Has anybody else figured out a way around this?

There's no way around this. Two things however. You can put your parents in your favorites list... so you'll have quick access to them. Second, if you start typing Mom or Dad in Contacts, it will still bring up your parents... the Facebook info doesn't overwrite "Mom" and "Dad"... just changes how they appear in Contacts.

Agreed. I'm sure at some point they'll build in an option to allow you to pick which name is dominant.
Hey guys
I tried searching the forums, but found nothing on this. I'm looking to refresh all the facebook photos that are used in the sense contacts. I have done the link/unlink and sign out of facebook for sense in the past, but these get annoying because I then have to relink all the accounts. Now that I have root, is it possible to clear a cache of these photos somewhere so that they refresh? I'm really trying to avoid having to re-link so many accounts again.
Thanks
.
I was wondering the same thing, myself
Yeah, that **** doesn't update at all.
They are also pixelated as ****.
Well this kept bugging me too, but I just keep doing the sign out of facebook and resign in trick...
I don't know why this would unlink all your contacts to their facebook accounts, as whenever I sign out and sign back in, nothing changes except the contact pictures...
I also am not deleting the account then creating a new one if that helps...
If you have the contacts backed up to Google remove the face book account then clear contact storage under manage applications then re-sync Google then re add Facebook. Hope that helps.

It has something to do with Friend Stream and the way things are linked with it.
I know I have done it before and when I choose refresh it does go out and update their Contact photo's to their latest Facebook photo.
I just sat here playing with it and I can get them to update as long as they are linked. However if you have a photo saved into an Outlook contact, it will not update, it will force to what Outlook has set. (I know this is true for Exchange, but not sure if it is same for a Desktop Sync)
Hope this helps !

I second this... What is really weird is my wife doesn't have this problem, all of her contacts sync perfectly, it definitely frustrates me lol.
Refreshing them through the facebook directory only refreshed them in that screen, not in my normal contact list. The app was a great suggestion though, thanks!

What I found is that once you scroll over a contact it will add them to the 'to update' list. So if you scroll through your contacts when refreshing then it will update them all ----very slowly though.
Hi,
There is one thing that driving me nuts. Lets say I have a friend, whose names is John. In google, I have saved his email ID with name j.smith .. .. then his another email ID with johns .. .. and then finally his cell number with name john ..
After, I linked up all accounts in my HTC Desire People. I can see these three accounts in one single contact. Fare enough and perfect. But is there anyway, I can merge these three accounts into 1 so that it is synced to my Google Account and to my HTC Contacts?
Not sure if I understand correctly what you want to do but its something I've struggled with as well. There was a perfect app for this on iPhone/iOS but I have yet to find anything that comes even close on Android. Try Contacts Analyzer available on Market but it's dismal. Doesn't allow you a preview of the changes you're about to make before you commit them!
Didn't help that .. :s
Gmail Contacts
Your best bet is to just do it in Gmail from your computer, then let the phone sync. It's easy and you will have them all in the same format, and you can add pictures for caller ID, etc.
You're in trouble if you have 1,000 contacts like I used to...the idea I think is to use an app that auto-works and gets the job done as a batch without you having to edit every single contact...then you can sync to Facebook and pull in some photos IDs...
Hi,
Anybody knows of an app that merges / joins contacts?
HTC Sense has this function if you know what I mean, sometimes a chain-link icons shows up in the notification area.
I´d like to have an app that does this on a batch basis so that I can chose to do so for all my contacts instead of merging / joining one by one.
I know I can do this one by one. Go contacts Ex gives this function without doing it for everyone at one batch job. You have to acceppt one by one...
I am using , Google, ActiveSync, Facebook, Whatsapp etc. contacts
Ideas?

This. Plus there is an option on Gmail to merge duplicates so you can at least have google do most of the sorting and merging for you. And if possible, don't let any HTC app mess with my Google contacts.

I think that's the most important idea about merging. My opinion's that any given app could mess things up and leave you with a lot of different linked contacts. Personally I prefer to edit all my contacts at my Gmail account so that I don't have to merge them again everytime I flash another rom for example.
If you're willing to take the time and patience for it it'll pay off to manually manage your contacts at Gmail.

I've been searching that function for long time since I moved from the stock sense rom to others, and still no app is giving me this. I even tried a lot of different contact manager but no one works really well.
About G contacts: I really care to keep the list "clean" and every contact linked with whatsapp, email, facebook etc, but sometimes it just lose the info, even if I've just merged that contact with the app I'm currently using (I'm running MildWild) and rsynced the G account.
Try Go Contacts Ex (free), it has various functions on merging contacts (by number, email etc.)
Thanks, this works nearly perfect.

I think you should sync with gmail.
I would like to share about stock Social Phonebook on the new 2.1 update.
This is what I found so far. And please share what you found too.
As far we know Social Phonebook will automatically Join our contacts from Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, Yahoo Messenger, Spotify, etc.
I. Facebook Integration
The most annoying one is when it change my phonebook name with the name from facebook. This is what I found about it.
1. SP (Social Phonebook) will automatically join contact from phonebook when it has the same name (first and last) or phone number or email. And it will show us the name from facebook.
2. If we join manually and our phonebook first name has the same name as the facebook first name, it will show you the name from the facebook. Example: phonebook name John, facebook name John Doe, it will show as John Doe.
3. If we join manually and have different first name from phonebook and different name from facebook, it will show us the name from phonebook. Example : phonebook name JOE, facebook name John Doe, it will show as JOE.
II. Yahoo Messenger, PingChat, and ... (haven't try more than that) Integration
Our new SP is a more complicated than the last phonebook. It has a lot more feature. It can even integrate with YM, PingChat and I assume a lot more.
1. If you put Yahoo IM in your phonebook and have YM official app at the same time. It will integrate seamlessly. Everytime you click your contact YM it will automatically in the chat mode at your YM app. You can even directly sms your contacts from YM app (if the phone number is support by YM). And if you choose Contacts Detail at YM it will show you whats in your phonebook contact accordingly including FB status from your contacts.
2. If you are using PingChat, you can link using PingChat app, or add it manually via phonebook. To add from PingChat app you could click link contact inside of the app. To add from phonebook you could add field->IM->Custom and type in PingChat insie the Custom Field Name and type in your friend PingChat ID for example : onetwothree (PingChat) <<== yes type (PingChat) too.
III. Powerful Contacts Avatar/Pic.
At the left side of your contacts name inside the phonebook lies your contacts avatar/pic. If you click the avatar, it will show you various pop up menu (most basic one is Dialer, Phonebook, and Messanging).
1. If you join your contacts with facebook it will show you facebook icon and when you click it, it will call FB official apps. (I guess this also applied with other join contacts? )
2. If you have either IM (mine is YM and PingChat), it will show you one of the icon whether it's YM or PingChat. When you click it, you can choose between the app and it will directly call the in the chat mode.
3. If you have address, it will show you Google maps icon too. When you click it of course it will show you the map location. ^_^
4. If you have email (I'm using K-9 Mail) it will show you K-9 mail and when you click it, it will bring the app in the send mode. (I'm using K-9 mail and Handcent, with the stock messanging and email the icon it's the same so rather confusing).
Will post more if I found anything else. Please share yours too. ^_^ .
Still have a Blurry Contacts Pic in call though (even using Timescape method <== thanks to tigermrk for mention it).
blurry contact pictures can be cured for facebook contacts at least by setting up timescape to your facebook and then that should automaticcaly sync to your phonebook then each contact will have 2 pictures when u click edit, then just long click the timescape picture and set as contact picture, save and exit
fully tested and working it really bothered me those blurry pictures lol

The phonebook actually don´t work when you have two friends with the exact same name...
For some reason i have the problem that i have 8 friends, that in pairs of two have the exact same name (on facebook), in my phone i have given them alternative last names, or used their middle name when they have one, but the phone have combined them so they both is in the same contact now.
Pretty stupid system...
I can´t be the only one in the world with that problem...
Also an other annoing thing, is if eg. my gf have her phone number and e-mail on facebook, and i allready also had it in contact on the phone, then it will be there two times in a row when they are combined.
The system should be able to figure out that the same phone-number/adress/e-mail only have to be under a person once....
SE can make face recon., but can´t see that eg. two email-adresses is 100% identical...
I tried the system 4-5 days, but decided to shut it down again, as it was too annoing to use for real...

Have you tried reverse join? Join your FB contacts with your phonebook contacts.

But when you send a text, and go to add contact, it shows everyone, and some multiple times over. Anyone know how to set that to only your phone numbers? Super annoying

Have you tried reverse join? The default one is join your phonebook contacts with your fb contacts. Try to join your FB contacts with your phonebook contacts. Sometimes if I can't join, I did it this way.

Can you explain a little more how to do this?
I tried viewing my contacts in the Facebook app itself then long clicked everywhere, tried menu button too, and found no option to link to my phonebook. Maybe I'm just missing something or don't quite understand what you mean :S Thanks

I'm sorry if I make you or others confuse. Generally what show at phonebook is only our phonebook contacts, meanwhile now we had other contacts such as facebook, twitter, etc contacts. We can enable it by clicking three people pics at the top left of our phonebook.
For example if you check all fb contacts, the phonebook will now show your facebook contacts as well. From here you could long press your fb contacts and join it with your phonebook contacts. That what I mean before. ^_^
