What can go wrong if I don't install the pershoot kernel correctly. I've never done this before, don't understand it, I'd just be following instructions hoping I do it correctly.
Is it possible to brick my tab? If so can I easily avoid it?

If you follow the instructions, you will be just fine. The instructions are quite clear and easy to follow.
Unless you change the files within the kernel before you flash it, you wont "Brick" your tab (black screen, inability to turn on at all, no buttons do anything, etc..)
If you make a simple mistake, you could "Soft Brick" it (Tab turns on but stays at "Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1" screen or the boot animation after that loops). This can be easily fixed through Odin on your computer though so its not a big deal.
Just make sure you make a Nandroid backup before trying it. And you might want to take that backup and copy it onto your computer because Odin can wipe your sdcard as well as your internal memory (it could wipe out your backup)

Also, this should have been put in the Questions forum.

thanks pal. I don't know whether to try this or not. How good are the changes?
Forgot about the q&a section, and my bad.

It actually speeds up your device (unlike everything else that says it does but it doesnt)
It allows you to overclock your device (you cant do that on stock kernel)

The only reason I use this kernel is overclocking. Read the instructions carefully and follow them exactly -- its's worth it.
as long as you follow the directions from his site you'll be fine, make sure you dl the right kernel tho.

Ok, so I'm pretty good at following instructions, so good apparently I didn't even need to understand what I was actually doing.
In about 30 minutes I unlocked my bootloader, rooted my phone, performed a nandroid backup, installed CM 5.0.6, and just now installed this kernel:
boot-cm_2633.3-oc-uv-xtra-btn-aud-ram-vfp_fp-050710.zip
But can someone explain what I've done? LOL! Everything seems to be working, but I think I'm a bit lost.
What have I over-clocked to or under-volted to with this file?
I did the recovery zip install instead of the zimage install. Does that mean I don't need to push the bcm4329.ko file?
Basically my question is, what have I just gained?
What does the xtra stand for?
Should I install SetCpu?
Thanks~
Yes you need, it won't auto overclock or underclock automatically without the help on setCPU.

If you didn't know what it did, why did you install it. :-\ The only downfall with having kernels zipped and flashable. . .people don't take the time to read and learn.

Thanks dad! (or mom) Now that you've pointed this out, I've totally learned my lession.
I've read and read and read. and read some more.
To clarify, the only part I didn't fully understand was the kernel. So yeah, I shouldn't have done it, but I did.
Thanks Andrewtst for the helpful answer. In my reading I had read about setcpu, but I thought it was just to further tweak settings that were already set with the install. I'll read more.
Anyway, back to topic... as far as the newer version Wifi module:

What is the benefit with that? I was confused by the wording on the droid basement instructions, I re-read that whole page again, and I think I've answered my own question, and I did not install that by flashing the zip through recovery. It's a separate step. I'm now wondering if there's a benefit to installing it. I'll search here as well.
I've always been the type of person to dive right in, and learn as I go. Sometimes I can read till I'm blue in the face, but I won't start to "get it" till I actually get started. I'm a hands on person.
And really, it's not like it's rocket science! I'm not a rogue scientist being irresponsible with the world's vaccination supply. Just a nerd having fun with my phone.
Let me apologize for being a newbie as I come from 5 years of using Windows Mobile and just got my first Tab/Android 2 weeks ago. This is all new to me.
After messing up with some system files and factory applications (like I removed stk.apk and other things) I decided to do a full hardware reset. This is something I did many times in Windows Mobile... whats bad get overwriten in ROM and whats missing gets back where it was. But is seems on this Tab this is not the case.
After the full resetthings only got dramatically worse. All the missing system apps are still missing (I thought they be "restored") and nothing works, just crashes one after the next, cant use anything. I also tried with the system off the method of pressing and holding the “Volume Up” and “Power” buttons at the same time, then after recovery screen appears navigate and select “wipe data / Factory reset” and pressing the “Home” button, but after that and the system re-starts, same thing! All bad.
Can someone please explain to me how to do a full rstore where all system files, all and everythign gets back as it was in the Tab as it was shipped? What a flippin' nightmare... Windows Mobile, I love you!
Thanks in advance.

Yeh i realized that after reading your post properly sorry man, i guess you can just flash one of roms found here, like rotos or modaco's JMI, that would atlest give you a work tab till you can find a stock samsung rom
If you dont have cwm installed you can flash with odin or heidmill (sp)

First of all, you need to post what "type" of Tab you have, which is generally going to be determined by your country and/or carrier.
Flashing a new Android ROM isn't a particularly complicated process, but it can seem daunting if you've not done it before - this is especially true when using Odin or Heimdall over a "recovery" based flash.
FWIW, the reason your "factory reset" didn't work is because all is essentially does it reformat the /data partition (a generalisation, but close enough for these purposes). On a stock Tab, you cannot mount /system as read/write, so you are unable to change the contents of that partition. This means that on a stock Tab, /system should never change.
However, when you root the device you give yourself the ability to remount /system as read/write and thus make changes which are not going to affected by a factory reset.
Take a look at this thread - lots of useful information there!

Dave

Thanks for the link... yes Ive seen that master thread... I just keep reading from link to link and thread to thread and all gets more complicated, I keep downloading more files and installing more stuff but in the end Im more confused and positively going no where. There is not one simple, from start to finish guideline on how to do the process of wiping all data and installing a new ROM. Ive done this endless times on many phones under WinMo, and with more or less difficulty never had any problems getting this done. But here, the more I read the more utterly chaotically confused I am.
I am yet to have anyone explain what type of Tab I have. Its GSM, I think its Euro, bought in Hong Kong. I have found out all bootloaders and stuff seem to be cleaer and I should be able to flash anything. Its a GT-P1000 and Baseband P1000ZHJJ1. This is all I know.

Its pretty much the same as mine then, so i recommend you use modacos kernel and rom and installing cwm
cwm - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870690
Kernel - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925760
Rom - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=941423
If you have and external sd card (one that you put into the side of the tab)
You can flash the ext4 kernel via odin, its pretty simple, there will be instructions in the threads.
Are you still able to go on the market? If so download the cwm app and use that so you get the awesome recovery menu and features, you can then use it to flash a new rom and make backups that are really really easy to restore. Seeing it looks like you like to mess around with stuff i suggest it the best way to go.
Hope this helps
Ok thanks for the tips. I have finally managed to get the Tab working again and flashed it with Roto JMI Pre-Rooted Firmware v2. All seems OK at this point. Ill check the links you sent me and follow-up. Flashing Roto JMI Pre-Rooted Firmware v2 with Odin3 1.7 is easy so I hope modacos kernel and rom and installing cwm are easy as well.
A little off topic:
I just got my SGT on Friday and want to root&/flash custom ROM. Gonna definitely root soon...But thinking of holding off on the custom ROM until CM7 is stable or a nice clean Honeycomb ROM is cooked
Does ClockWorkMod require root? I know Titanium Backup does. Can't really do any "fun" things with the tab until it's rooted it seems.

Just because you didn't care to read ANY of the stickies around... I'll make sure you do, i'll give you instructions but lets see if you can go back a page and click the stickies to learn how to do all of this:
you will need to get into download mode, and odin - this is the safest and recommended route
if you want to take a bit of a risk you can try to go into recovery and flash the ROM you were in before - this can lead to more bootloops/brick
here is the video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwNzHqezAuU&feature=youtu.be
If only there was a guide that explained what to do when you get a bootloop while installing ICS. Hmmm. (Hint: see my sig).
If that doesn't work, rider's is the way to go.
Edit:: saw that you posted your video. That is a fast ass bootloop. Hit your thanks button by accident. Anyways try pulling your battery and booting into recovery and reflashing ICS again over itself. Did you wipe and factory reset?
i am a dumbass that followed a youtube video tutorial congratulations to me(pissed >(, i went straight from eclair to ics. wopdee do. I got odin in a ".rar" file and cant open it, but i prob have the wrong odin then right?
Not sure about your Odin file but check my guide for clear instructions. Need to go from 2.1 to CM7 to ICS flavor.
Alright i am lost and pissed? what should i do now, (i did my touchpad just fine to ics) to let you know that i am not a complete n00b about this, but the vibrant is not liking me...
ok, now that i've seen the video this is not any normal BOOT LOOP.
What exactly did you do to get this? Which flashing procedures did you look at?
Can you at all get into recovery/download mode?* most important question*
Do you have Froyo Bootloaders or GB bootloaders? (if you don't know what these are and have not messed with bootloaders you are on Froyo.)
I have just read what the recovery says through the video
It pretty much says that it is trying to flash ICS PASSION, but it cannot because your sdcard is either a) wiped b) not mounted c) the ICS PASSION file is corrupted and/or ics passion has been deleted somehow.
-after reading some latest posts from you, i'm sorry for making you feel like a dumbass but you did not read the instructions, mainly the stickies, and did not follow the instructions on how to get to ICS from eclair. That is why. Many do not and I prefer not to give any help at all to people who can't help themselves, but I understand your situation and i'll try to help. Sorry for offending you if I did, its just that some people need to be treated that way so they open their eyes and start reading around.
i understand that, but i did a battery pull and the samsung vibrant is still doing the same thing, when i hold power and volume down it stays at the "vibrant" thing but that is it, i can do anything else but watch it boot loop.
okay, i did a wipe on my sd card before installing, let me try to find the youtube guide
here is the guide that i followed, i just went from step three onward because it was rooted but nothing else
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iryi3TzylN4

Dude that video is wack. He pirates one version of CWR but once it boots up is a completely different version. Check out the numbers on top. The edits are terrible. Cuts out some pretty huge points. Plus he starts out with Passion beta 1 on his settings screen before he edits back to show you how to do it, but ends up with RC1.
so am i screwed? if i am than thanks for trying to help me though.
No you are not screwed. Odin back to stock 2.1 and then follow the instructions. Don't sweat getting Gingerbread bootloaders for now. Get your phone in download mode.
You probably won't know this but even if you phone doesn't show download mode on its screen, you want that yellow COM box to light up in Odin. Once you see that, profit.

First read the post above this and try to get odin to light up yellow, if it does, no JIG needed, odin and you should be good. If that does not happen, then you will need a JIG.
Since you cannot get into recovery or download mode, I would try a JIG before claiming that your phone is a brick.
does the odin and stock rom from the video that i used work? or where should i get the odin and stock rom this time without effing up?
Hey there. I rooted my Vibrant successfully, but realized I left some important things out. I used this guide to root my Vibrant: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723479
The problems:
1) I can't nandroid (not that I need to, I only have 4 apps)
2) I would like to install either Miui v4 or CyanogenMod 9 but cannot as my recovery screen does not show me the options to do so (I only get the 4 options you normally would get unrooted, such as "Reinstall Packages"), so I'm stuck with the lame default homescreen.
3) I'm currently on 2.1-update1; should I upgrade to 2.2? If so, must I unroot to upgrade, and then reroot? And if this were the case, how do you unroot, and can I reroot using the same method in the link above?
Also, I was looking at this guide: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Sa...te_Guide#Installing_the_ClockworkMod_Recovery
and noticed the line "This guide assumes the Samsung Vibrant already has Android 2.2 build UVKB5 already installed on it."
Does this mean 2.2 is required to install the CWM Recovery?
Thank you.
I'm not sure how you don't have CWM recovery if you followed the guide as it is written. Maybe its because the 2.1 is updated? I would do the following and see if that's all it takes. You definitely don't want to update to stock 2.2 via Kies or anything of that nature.
Worst case scenario, we can have you Odin back to stock JFD. You'll be smooth sailing from there.
Search the forums and find the update.zip for CWM for our Vibrant.
Put that on the lowest level of your INTERNAL storage. Not your microsd card. For example f:\update.zip
Now go to your boring 4 option stock recovery and select reinstall packages. It will reboot to the same boring screen. Select reinstall packages again, and it will reboot into Clockwork Mod Recovery.
Let me know if that does anything for you. Also what version of stock recovery do you have?

Can pull that directly from my signature, if OP wants. (Only works on Eclair [JFD] build btw)
Also OP, You will have to have a ROM that you are going to want to flash saved on your Internal SD card. Jsut download it, put in a folder and follow the ROM OP's instructions. Since you are fresh and new, I would NOT suggest flashing anything of ICS or JB until you get the hang of things first.
Read, read and then read somemore. When it comes time to flash ICS or beyond, there is a guide in my signature. Good luck and make sure to hit Toast's "Thanks" button. He is a good asset to have around here.
Wow! I was hesitant to even check today, let it alone this early! Did not think that I would have two very useful replies waiting for me. Thanks guys, much appreciated!
I'll try the Odin thing out first before I even try to flash (you need root first before flashing, I'm assuming). Just out of curiosity, what is JFD and Odin? I'm still gonna try it out using the guides found here, but just curious.
EDIT: Damn, it worked like a charm! Now I have CWM. The mistake I made was that I only installed the Superuser/ROOT and not both. Gonna play with it for a bit now

Thank you for teaching me the etiquette around here as well
Requesting guidance before I brick my phone.
I currently have bootloader unlocked, twrp installed, and my nexus 6p rooted. I'm running 7.1.2. I've also changed a line in the (build.prop) provisions in order to tether free (since I am on at&t)
Basically, I'm wanting to install pure nexus. I have the custom rom file and the vendor image file.
Before I install from, I'm wondering if I need to unroot first? Also curious if how "shamu" will affect things since I'm on Angler.
Thanks!
Okay you need to stop everything you're doing and read this topic until you know what is what.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928/page577
First of all, you obviously wouldn't flash a Shamu package on Angler. That's a great way to brick your phone, permanently.
Read every single step in that guide above, even if you don't think it's pertinent to what you're trying to do. Read it a second, third, fourth, fifth time until you know the steps by heart. Until you know what's next.
Also, download the correct Angler zip file and DO NOT FLASH A SHAMU ZIP ON YOUR PHONE.

I'm trying to find what you are referring me to but I'm not finding the info I need I haven't been on here too often so this is like a pain in my rear so far. Plus I'm a very hands on kinda learner so I need some like handicapped help lol If you don't mind I don't want to pester anyone...
I was able to load pure Nexus. I didn't realize there was a pure nexus rom with Angler on it.
My main question was if I had to reverse the root. But I'm good to good now.
Rom loaded, vendor image loaded, and Google Apps loaded.
