I keep my GPS turned of when I'm not using it, and Google Maps is never running in the background.

Do you use Google Latitude or have any maps/latitude widgets on screen? those will cause this activity.

When I cooked my ROM, I took everything out that ran in the background that I never used;
Clearfi, Media Server, etc. but never touched anything related to GPS, or maps, so I have no idea why it wouldn't be running on mine, and running on yours. Which version of HC are you running?

Use system tuner pro and freeze any app.it won't run again until you boil it.

I think that the maps service will run if you have 'shared your location' with the browser or other apps that use maps for location specific information. This can be switched on in Settings -> location and security.

No, but you can make sure everything related to location in your settings is turned off as stated by someone else?

Check under Settings and disable anything related to location, besides GPS (really not needed to disable, it only runs when an application that use GPS is running) .
See my screen capture.

Possibly, was wondering if anyone else encountered the same problem before i start messing around with changing kernels or roms. Plenty of people using this combination and haven't seen any posts with same problem as me. Thanks for the help anyway. Maybe I'll try a different kernel

Quick question Moe. Why do you use a custom kernel? Do you overclock?
Just asking, because when I first got my tab I must have flashed every ROM and kernel that was out at the time, and found none with less problems, and more stable than the stock 3.2 kernel.
Nothing more than curiosity.

To be honest I'm just trying stuff out to see what all the fuss is about. Both seem to be highly recommended so when i decided to go custom I just went with those two.

advice for getting my awake time down (its at 100%)

I just recently noticed that my phone has a 100% awake time and I cannot find a reason why. The partial wake lock function in spare parts says nothing is keeping it awake for a long period of time... Any advice on how to fix this? Any help is much apreciated. Im running fresh 1.1 with gumbo kernal less agressive
USB charging does not allow the phone to sleep.
I rebooted my phone right after i took it off the charger this morning and monitered it throughout the day and it still was 100%...
Kind of a silly question, but have your recently installed any new apps? I know that my Facebook for Android keeps my phone awake quite a bit. In fact, I think I'm about to uninstall it if it still keeps it awake after I remove the widget. Anyone else have that problem with Facebook? Not to hijack.
Did you look in Spare Parts for the total times on Partial Usage?

it says it keeps it awake for a little but not that much I'll try removing that widget and see if it helps
It's not the widget. SOME Fresh ROM users see the same thing when they first flash the new kernel. A reboot fixed it for most.
if all else fails, backup your apps/sms and RUU/root/reinstall rom/restore
try removing the htclocationservice apk. my friend had this problem and thats how we fixed it.
rm HtcLocationService.apk in /system/app
you dont need it btw, android has its own.

after doing a factory reset of my phone the awake time went down on my phone, this means it has to be an app or widget correct?

It could have been an app or widget, but it could have been a number of things other then that. Start adding your apps back 1 by 1 and see if they affect your wake time. I like i said earlier, we were able to fix it by the location service alone.

Android system/HTC Checkin using over 90% CPU

The HTC Checkin service is talked about quite a lot, as lots of people seem to have issues with it running all the time, and sometimes twice. No-one seems to know what to do with it though.
My personal experience of it is that it takes over 90% of my CPU and I need to restart Android as I can't actually kill it. (If it does close then it's starting again straight away.)
I'm currently using Mdeejay FroYo HD v3.7 and this is the only problem I have with it (other than the obvious camera issue).
Does anyone have any advice on how I can kill this app/service and stop it restarting? I'd ideally like it removed from my phone unless it's really, really important.

You can try using Titanium Backup to freeze it. If everything works without it then you can use it to uninstall it completely.

how did it work out for you? process smd_tty is now taking up 90% for me. just curious. thanks.
I used the freeze option in Titanium,as suggested, and it didn't have any detrimental effects, so I removed it and have not had any side effects. I'd say try the same and see how you get on.
Sent from my HD2 using the XDA App
what "freeze" option? i only see the ability to back up programs... Titanium had a taskmanager-like feature? Can you tell me where i can find thid feature? thanks.

It's only available in the paid version, but I think you can still see it in the free one.
Bring up the app list by clicking on "Backup/Restore" and then click an application. There's a freeze option in there.
i can't see the process smd_tty as an app or process in titanium. no listing for it.
It may be running as part of some other process then. Without knowing what it actually does I don't know what you could do about it.
thanks. that is what i thought. I take it that you are happy with your fix? ar you still getting the high cpu burn now? is the check in service virtually useless then?

No, just for a few mns until the application is done updating/ installing or un installing Then the screen either hang or locked itself. Like the system did a soft reboot.

It's normal for a device to slow down or lag a little when installing apps sometimes, the screen locking definitely isn't normal though.
Even my does the same

Even when installing app? That's odd. My note 5 doesn't freeze when installing apps or updating them
It's an issue with aosp package installer. You won't see it on other devices as the oems re-write that code.
It's mostly noticeable on anything FB puts out. As they are known for having the worst coded apps on the market.

So far I don't think there is a fix. Can't say about official Google. As I have not run a stock rom since I got my first device. If they have fixed it they have not pushed the fix to aosp which is happening more and more with google

Well as the custom roms sync their source with aosp, then Google has not pushed a fix if there is one. This is happening more and more. Google fixes something but doesn't push it to aosp so it stays broken in 3rd party roms until the devs find a fix
Has this been solved? It's happening to me.
facing same issue. Also my YouTube pause video whenever some app gets updated in background.
Noticed this along with horrible battery life due to system ui restarts or something in all latest may version of Roms. I went back to b29I or whatever "I" version stock rom. No problems since. Goodluck

Background apps closing by themselves

Hi everyone,
this problem is following me in every rom I try!
CM, Stock, 5.1.1, 5.0.1, it does'nt matter, in every rom I face this problem....
you see, music is playing in background and some other apps like Hotspot shield are running in background at the same time... as soon as i open firefox, music player completely shuts off and so does hotspot shield...
in every rom I face this problem so now I'm starting to think maybe its a hardware issue... could it be a hardware issue?
anyone with the same issue?
I have Flyme installed on my phone and its a good rom and I dont want to change it, even if I change it im sure the problem with come to me again in other roms, so help me fix this
Android closes apps when it is low on memory (RAM).
I don't think its related to that, I have plenty of ram when that happens, besides, closing all background apps at once?
and why does this always happen when I open a web browser?

I just told you in my previous reply.
Maybe that web browser uses all the memory.
Or does it happen with every web browser?

I don't have alot of apps running in background, 2GB of RAM and still its not enough for a web browser and a music player beside 5 or 6 other apps that each of 'em need 60 to 70mb of RAM? That's strange
I tried 3 or 4 different web browsers, Chrome, Stock web browser, Firefox, and some other browsers... all the same
This guy also has the same problem:
HTML:

Maybe one of your apps causes the issues. After all, you changed several ROMs (clean wiped I assume) and the only constant would be the user apps you always install/restore after a flash.

Go one by one and install and uninstall apps, while repeatedly trying to run the ones you stated in your first post. If there is an app causing that problem, just try doing some old fashioned process of elimination.

use sd-maid to freeze and control the auto start receiver for it!!! Otherwise there are a view invisible receivers active. Maybe this can cost battery power
