If I have 7.1 running off of emmc and want to have a dual boot with the default nook software is there a way to do this without starting over?
Yep. My dual boot guide is in my sig--basically, you'll just do an Advanced Restore of /data only at the end, to get your apps and settings back.
I followed your guide and now I have a perfect dual boot setup. However, if I did not root the default nook software I can't after the fact, correct?
Correct. While it may be possible for someone smarter than me to point Manual Nooter at the alt partition, for now you have to take care of it before you move stock. The pro of leaving stock unrooted is, you don't have to worry about the inability to backup or restore the alt partition, because there aren't that many settings to begin with, and all your apps and purchases are on B&N's servers.

Everyone seems excited about this, what exactly is it? Does it just restore the phone back from root or what? I am still a WM user, but ordered a Inc so looking forward to rooting it. Just lookin ahead
It simplifies and automates the root process. Whereas before you had to sit there repeatedly rebooting and uplugging your Droid a billion times to get it into root (if at all), then follow a bunch of steps after that, this program fully automates it. All you have to do is install some drivers, start the program and it goes through and does just about everything for you, rebooting the phone and everything.

partly true, but you need to be rooted before the reflasher will work
reflashing the recovery is a big thing. it allows you to do nandroid backups (full system backups) and flash unsigned (custom) roms. which give you options such as overclocked kernels, sense-less roms and stuff of that nature
The process the unrevoked team made flashes the clockwork recovery which allows us to flash custom roms, make nandroid backups, partition and mount and write system files... etc etc... basically allowing us to fully customize our phone with a simple, easy to use menu..
ok, so from what I understand you have to be rooted before you run recovery. You run recovery so it will give you a menu to work with instead of having to hook the phone up to the computer to add kernels or whatever you are trying to do?
I am trying to understand it all, linux is just new to me.
I think there is a misunderstanding of the purpose of recovery. Recovery has nothing to do with root, although you need it to apply a custom one. It is built into all android phones, it is what allows the phone to apply updates to /system and it also is used when wiping to factory reset the phone.
The recovery's that Amon_Ra and Koush have worked on are similar, but just with added functionality to allow things like making backups, restoring backups formating the SD card etc. By having the ability to backup and restore /system and /data it allows you to roll back to a state where the phone still functioned properly in case you went and messed something up by accident (or on purpose).
You can still have root and flash custom ROMs w/o custom recovery. its just reckless as you could be left with a broken phone.
ah ok, so basically I can backup my phone from the stock settings with the recovery program that way if I ever want to revert back to the outofbox ROM I can. Then I can try other ROMs and always be able to revert back.
That said, if I backup my phone will it save everything (account settings, programs, appearance...)?
I encrypted my 10.1 yesterday without thinking all the way though. I found out that I could no longer flash kernels while the tablet is encrypted, since the SD card is not accessible in CWR.
I've tried doing a factory reset on my tab and each time, it boots up like nothing happened. I've also tried removing the pin that I put on it and the option to remove it is grayed out.
Do any of you know of a way to do a full wipe on the 10.1? Or could I reflash it using ODIN?
Thanks in advance.
id like to know this as well
still nothing? im starting to think this is an easy fix that nobody has posted about yet
there has to be something that im missing
try post # 6 in the linked thread, restore with unmodified vanilla version image from second link provided in the post, after booting from fastboot into recovery with clockworkmod recovery img; pushing it into the device sd with adb commandline, check the post for modifications and the link for details.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161325
whenever i try to reset to factory defaults, it just reboots like nothing happened
re-flash a stock firmware via odin as tar or fastboot/nandroid as img (backup restore)
Ones the tab is encrypted, there's no way to un do it. Unless you do what mughalgxt suggested. Good luck
Thanks guys, I went through some of these steps and found some other good tutorials to get me back up and running. All i wanted was to try the new kernel/bonsai rom out and I'm now able to do that
**** encryption, put a lockscreen password and be done with it.
I'm still struggling with this, as well: off to read some of the linked threads, because even with flashing a stock image with ODIN I'm still not able to recover the device. At least I managed to proceed past the boot loop I WAS in (when attempting to flash from CWM) - but now, I can get to the point where the device prompts me for the decryption key (meaning, it's clearly not yet restored to factory defaults) - but can't get it boot to completion. I also note that I've still got CWM Recovery, not stock.
It seems, at some point, encryption-key be damned, right? Meaning, if I don't care about recovering the contents of the encrypted partition - surely these low-level tools have the ability to simply format the partitions? Perhaps not - at least, not CWM - as attempts to format /data continue to fail.
Off to review the linked threads to try to gain some additional insight.
I ran into this same issue a long while back. As I recall (and it's been a while), you won't be able to wipe from CWM, but you can wipe from Settings / Privacy / Factory Data Reset. I could be wrong, but I know that I didn't have to do any adb pushing or anything with special images.
Hi SacTilt-
Thanks for the reply - and agreed: Had I actively started the effort from a functioning device, I think I could have selected that option.
As it turns out - I ran CWM, rebooted into recovery, and... next thing I knew, I was in boot loop hell.
I've tried flashing a variety of files via ODIN: Some at least allow the device to boot to the point where I get the initial password prompt - which I can provide, and proceed past... but then the device just 'goes blank'.
What I'm looking for is a 'start-from-scratch', no concern for data loss, delete the dang encrypted /data folder already, will ya?... approach.
As I've mentioned, a variety of ODIN files from a myriad of sources haven't seemed to quite do the trick. I feel like I'm missing something obvious - but can't find the right angle to spot it.
Perhaps fastboot might be what I'm looking for?
FWIW: the device was rooted when I started, so I've got full Titanium backups, with which I can restore, once I recover the actual device / OS.
Thanks for any insight.
Hey guys...if anybody finds a solution to this, please let me know...I am stuck with this same damn experimental ROM I've had from day one...it's getting really old. All I want is to get rid of this stupid encryption. Thanks for any help. Tried ODIN flashing, wiping data from security screen, wiping from CMR, etc.
Have you tried formatting the sd? Whenever i had my ns4g i accidentially did the same thing and i wiped the SD and it removed the encryption.

I am returning my NC - dropped it, cracked the frame and volume keys no longer work. It's covered under my extended warranty, thank goodness!
I was running the MiRage rom on my emmc. I was able to restore to stock using TWRP (again, thank goodness for a touch screen recovery!).
I had redone my partitions to have 2 GB for my apps. Not being a developer, just someone who knows how to read instructions well, I'm wondering if when I restored my NC to stock, did it also restore the partitions, or is there something else I need to do before I send it back?
It would not restore original partitions... you will need the zip file for that as well.
So, if I follow the instructions in this thread (using TWRP instead of CWR) and restore to 1GB data/5 GB media, do I then need to reflash B&N stock image afterwards? Do I need to wipe before restoring the partitions?
shouldn't need to reflash stock... wiping not necessary.
@dizzyden - I have seen so many of your posts in the NC forum. Always helpful. Always with answers. Thank you for your help in my time of need.
I have a Razr M, TWRP 2.6, CM 10.1. The phone was encrypted. I had to reformat data in order to do a data wipe. Now I cannot encrypt again after the wipe. I know that the problem is that android encryption assumes it has 16 KB to play with, and the data partition created by TWRP is the wrong size. But I will be darned if I can find instructions for how to resize the data partition. I am not a proficient terminal / adb user, although I am trying to learn, and will give it a shot if someone has an idea how to go about it.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
Update
So this seems to be because the "Orig filesystem overlaps crypto footer region.", says logcat. The question is whether there is a fairly idiot friendly way to do this. One board suggests using a resize2fs binary for android -- I'm not going to lie, that is something I don't know how to do. Any suggestions? I feel like I'm close to a solution.
So , I had this issue as well. (My company requires encrypted android phones).
All you need to do is install the stock recovery, then encrypt, then you can re-install an aftermarket recovery.
cool

Cool solution. After googling unsuccessfully, I find that I don't know where to download the disc image for 4.2.2 stock recovery. Could someone point me the right way?
Thanks!
I have a nook color running Chameleon 4.2.2. on emmc. There is guy that wants to trade me for an older laptop, but he wants to keep the android 4.2.2 on the emmc. My question is can I just remove the accounts on it and clear the caches from android and trade or do I need to go back to stock and deregister.
I ask because I am not sure how to deregistrer without going back to stock, but if I do that then I will have to register again to be able to put android back on it. I guess I am a little confused on what I need to do here. I don't want to lose my content as I use the Nook app on my phone and other tablet. I also don't want this guy to be screwed if he goes back to stock....
I hope that made some kind of sense LOL
Thanks
Geeve
First, make a nandroid back up of your Chameleon with your bootable CWM SD. Then go to my NC Tips thread linked in my signature and reinstall stock per item A15 (including using my format zip). Then re-register with B&N. Then erase and de-register. That will remove that device from the B&N server. It will not effect your other registered devices. Then use CWM SD to restore your nandroid backup. Then do a factory reset to remove your personal data and it is ready for its new owner.

Cool Thanks! I wasn't sure if I could log in to B&N and erase and deregister from there. I was unsure what effect it would have on the Nook considering chameleon is running on the Emmc or my other devices..
