I encrypted my 10.1 yesterday without thinking all the way though. I found out that I could no longer flash kernels while the tablet is encrypted, since the SD card is not accessible in CWR.
I've tried doing a factory reset on my tab and each time, it boots up like nothing happened. I've also tried removing the pin that I put on it and the option to remove it is grayed out.
Do any of you know of a way to do a full wipe on the 10.1? Or could I reflash it using ODIN?
Thanks in advance.
id like to know this as well
still nothing? im starting to think this is an easy fix that nobody has posted about yet
there has to be something that im missing
try post # 6 in the linked thread, restore with unmodified vanilla version image from second link provided in the post, after booting from fastboot into recovery with clockworkmod recovery img; pushing it into the device sd with adb commandline, check the post for modifications and the link for details.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161325
whenever i try to reset to factory defaults, it just reboots like nothing happened
re-flash a stock firmware via odin as tar or fastboot/nandroid as img (backup restore)
Ones the tab is encrypted, there's no way to un do it. Unless you do what mughalgxt suggested. Good luck
Thanks guys, I went through some of these steps and found some other good tutorials to get me back up and running. All i wanted was to try the new kernel/bonsai rom out and I'm now able to do that
**** encryption, put a lockscreen password and be done with it.
I'm still struggling with this, as well: off to read some of the linked threads, because even with flashing a stock image with ODIN I'm still not able to recover the device. At least I managed to proceed past the boot loop I WAS in (when attempting to flash from CWM) - but now, I can get to the point where the device prompts me for the decryption key (meaning, it's clearly not yet restored to factory defaults) - but can't get it boot to completion. I also note that I've still got CWM Recovery, not stock.
It seems, at some point, encryption-key be damned, right? Meaning, if I don't care about recovering the contents of the encrypted partition - surely these low-level tools have the ability to simply format the partitions? Perhaps not - at least, not CWM - as attempts to format /data continue to fail.
Off to review the linked threads to try to gain some additional insight.
I ran into this same issue a long while back. As I recall (and it's been a while), you won't be able to wipe from CWM, but you can wipe from Settings / Privacy / Factory Data Reset. I could be wrong, but I know that I didn't have to do any adb pushing or anything with special images.
Hi SacTilt-
Thanks for the reply - and agreed: Had I actively started the effort from a functioning device, I think I could have selected that option.
As it turns out - I ran CWM, rebooted into recovery, and... next thing I knew, I was in boot loop hell.
I've tried flashing a variety of files via ODIN: Some at least allow the device to boot to the point where I get the initial password prompt - which I can provide, and proceed past... but then the device just 'goes blank'.
What I'm looking for is a 'start-from-scratch', no concern for data loss, delete the dang encrypted /data folder already, will ya?... approach.
As I've mentioned, a variety of ODIN files from a myriad of sources haven't seemed to quite do the trick. I feel like I'm missing something obvious - but can't find the right angle to spot it.
Perhaps fastboot might be what I'm looking for?
FWIW: the device was rooted when I started, so I've got full Titanium backups, with which I can restore, once I recover the actual device / OS.
Thanks for any insight.
Hey guys...if anybody finds a solution to this, please let me know...I am stuck with this same damn experimental ROM I've had from day one...it's getting really old. All I want is to get rid of this stupid encryption. Thanks for any help. Tried ODIN flashing, wiping data from security screen, wiping from CMR, etc.
Have you tried formatting the sd? Whenever i had my ns4g i accidentially did the same thing and i wiped the SD and it removed the encryption.

i had problems playing with dirrk oc kernals, so i ended up having to do the complete odin restore and managed to get the phone back to stock it seemed. but no setting will save on the phone, its like a factory reset every time i reboot the phone. can anyone help? when i did the odin restore i lost root, not sure if that means anything. anyone else having issues like this?
You have zero internal memory and the phone is not saving that you have run it.
Find the "FIXED 0.00 INTERNAL MEMORY" Topic in this forum.
Sent from my SCH-I500-Fascinate using XDA App
One of the steps I took with the zero memory issues that finally fixed my problem was to "factory data reset" in the privacy menu. I went from 0.0 to 1.0 gb memory.
BTW, I went through the 0.0 internal memory topic as well, but found that the above reset fixed it.
I wasn't patient enough when I did that to my phone on day 1. I just swapped it out at Best Buy, haha. Since it wasn't rooted at all, it just looked like corrupt firmware.
I will keep that in mind if I run into that issue again.
thank you for the quick responses. i tried the factory data reset already and still had zero memory. im not quite sure how to go about trying the solutions suggested in the other thread without having root. maybe im just misunderstanding what they are suggesting? or maybe there is a way i can root my phone now even with no memory???
Meh..
Takes less than 10 minutes, and gets you as close to stock as possible while still being rooted. It's not really monumental or earth-shattering.
I'll be the first to admit I was scared as hell the first time I did it.
Yeah..the first time. You think I actually *learned* from my mistake? Well, I did..I just keep making new, more interesting ones.
That *is* the point of Android, isn't it?
Steps:
Using adb, copy original.mbr (from that thread) to your phone.
flash stock.zip through CWM (you should still be able to get into recovery).
At this point, I diverged from the steps in the topic and restored my original stock+root backup as well)
Reboot, wipe data/cache, delete "databases" folder in /dbdata through root explorer.
(At this point I then did the nandroid revert to stock from the forums, updated, and had a nice functional phone again)
How far are you getting?
ok heres everything i have done and i still have no memory. i used the instructions to get back to stock with odin that came from the sticky on how to do everything. it included putting the original mbr on the phone and a few other things, im not so sure exactly what all it did but i followed those instructions to the t. then i had to use odin to get cwm back and i then used cwm to wipe and then tried to restore a backup. the backup restore didnt fix the memory so i wiped again and reflashed the superclean rom, still with no memory. thats where im at now, im too new to be comfortable doing much in adb without detailed instructions
ok i understand your instructions i think now, but i cant get the mbr on my phone using adb because i lost root. thats where i think im stuck
ok now ive got root back it seems but i cant do the adb thing it says to do for the original mbr. it just says "adb: not found" after i type in the cat /sdcard/original.mbr > /dev/block/mmcblk0 part
adb is part of the root zip you used earlier. Just go into the folder you ran start-root.bat from. Right-click on the folder/command-prompt here, should make it so you can use adb:
Adb shell
Such
Cat.....etc.
G/L.

@ mods i realised my mistake in posting this in the wrong section and posted in the right one but people are replying to this one......so please dont delete this just yet
I in my infinite wisdom tried to mod a file on my phone. I did a titanium backup 1st but forgot to move it to my external SD Doh!
So that went wrong and now I'm stuck in a boot loop with only the stock recovery screen. Need to install stock rom and adb not recognized. (Im sure ill figure that) but my main question is, is there some way to recover data from the internal "sd" memory?
I really appreciate any advice anyone can give
I am not sure if I understood your question.. if you have CWM then just access recovery mode and you will have an option to mount the SD and you will be able to access all your files via USB from your PC
?
I don't have cwm . Like I said I only have the stock recovery screens I.e factory reset and download mode.
Do a factory reset, it won't erase your data.
Not sure that would work. It says wipe user data and factory reset so surely it would wipe my data. Plus I don't think that'll work anyway as I changed a file which caused the boot loop so I don't think a factory reset will fix that file.

what info are you trying to get off the device? the sms etc are stored on your data and will be wiped by a reinstall/factory reset
anything on the usb side for storage will not get touched
Factory reset wont clear anything on the internal_sd
thank you.....but
thanks for the replies peeps ill trust your knowledge (and have pressed the thanks button )
got a day off tomorrow so gonna try and get it up and running again,
Question though, being as i buggered up the stock rom wont flashing the new rom (when i figure out how) delete internal data either.
the reason im being carefull is i did some awesome illustrations (imo) for a childrens book im writing so hoping to save those.

it depends on if you use a wipe or non wipe rom, a non wipe wil lkeep qall the data stored on the android system intact but you might get bootloops if it doesnt replace the file you say you deleted

Thanks Richy99, i took the plunge and followed nasgilani's guide to installing stock rom, i was supprised when it completed that even my home screens etc were as they were before (appart from widgets being blank) and glad to see "as you all said" my data intact.
i shall be more cautious before i start messing with mods next time
basically internal usb storage of 11gb will never be touched when you factory reset nor wil lanything on an external sd card
the only thing that gets wiped is the 1gb internal space for the rom and data on that partition such as sms/email etc
I know this is an old topic but I noticed it wasn't exactly answered.. I'm trying to send mine back to the factory for warranty because the power button no longer functions. I have the stock rom and recovery and I'm stuck in boot loop because I can't execute factory wipe with the power button. I'd like to pull my data off of the internal SD but am unable to fix the bootloop without forcing the wipe.
I know metter is over now, it was just ur worrying, otherwise wiping cache, wiping data from recovery , flashing stock rom (wipe/non wipe) nothing.will erase data on internal memory.
Just for knowledge
aroma file manager is available, which works from recovery, it can work even you device stucked, unable to boot..
Edit ; sometime you feel ashamed, just come to know this is 6month old topic

Hi
I record updating to 4.3 without removing root (I just lost it and the recovery asked if I wanted to redo it), so I decided to try the samething with 4.4. Well, things got very bad.
After I got the notification that 4.4 was available, I clicked to download it, the phone then rebooted and I installed it via the recovery.
Then Android booted and got stuck after Google's logo (balls moving) for more than 5 minutes, so I decided something was wrong and shut it down.
So far I tried going to adb shell and mounting sdcard (so I could make a backup), but apparently fstab had /sdcard datamedia /dev/null (huh?)
Then I tried to adb sideload 4.3 and 4.4 (from https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images ), and both failed for different reasons (4.3 just said "(bad)", 4.4 said something with "set_meta_recursive").
Then I did a "fastboot oem unlock" (please don't tell me this lose all the data - including sdcard) and retried that. Also didn't work.
(I cleaned cache before trying)
Then I found some tutorials telling to "fastboot flash bootloader/radio/...", but those versions (4.3 and 4.4) from the site above doesn't have files named "bootloader-mako-makoz20i.img" or so. I could find it for 4.2 (makoz10), so I tried with that and it apparently worked. Except also got on boot loop (different logo).
Then I downloaded an image that was on a link for 4.3 that had makoz20, so I tried with that and got the same result (it worked, but got on boot loop).
Now even recovery isn't working anymore.
I was careful to not run "fastboot -w" (or flash-all.sh) and/or to delete userdata.img from the .zip, so I have some hope I didn't lose all data.
Any hints on how to proceed from here?
thanks!

I am facing the same problem. The bootloader is stuck in a loop. Is there any way to recover the stock android??
true! It's interesting how google doesn't show results if you put it on quotes ("set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed")
gonna try that, thanks!
hm, well
I tried flashing using fastboot now (following method D on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312 ), so I guess set_metadata_recursive or something like that doesn't matter
it flashed correctly, but it still doesn't work (now I get stuck in black screen after google's logo)
oops, sorry. not black screen (I forgot to flash system), not it's stuck on the 4 balls animation, as it was right after the update ;(

no, I'm trying to avoid losing data
since nexus 4 sdcard isn't removable (and now I'm regretting have accepted that), is there anyway to save my data?
as I said, I tried mounting it, but for some reason /sdcard is pointing to /dev/null no fstab.
Now I already flashed the stock recovery, so maybe I need to flash something else to try that again, but is there anything I can do differently?
thanks

stock recovery wipe data and may I ask you what do you think you are going to lose? You are only going to lose apps and app data not photos or files which honestly you should have a free dropbox and save everything on there for the reason mentioned before... NO SDCARD
hm, maybe it's related with encryption I'd set from Security? I know the password, but it doesn't ask me for it anywhere

I think currently I'm more worried with not losing data than with getting my phone back working.
Sorry, but I find it ridiculous that it isn't easy to extract data from your phone easily. Even if it's encrypted, as long as I know the password there should be a tool to help with that.
Apparently there might be something like "recovery --set_encrypted_filesystem=off" (on adb shell), but I'm getting "sh: /sbin/postrecoveryboot.sh: not found", so no luck yet

wipe/data factory reset from custom recovery has nothing to do with sdcard based files. Its only going to delete any files in your data portion of your rom and not your sdcard. area... two completely different things, have you done your research on android and how everything works. Its good to search and read up on this stuff especially since its interesting and you apparently need a few answers to your questions

hold on let me take a look now that might be a different procedure I am referring to a wipe from recovery but in your case a full wipe may be necessary
hm, I didn't try any kind of wipe
so which one is safe (so I can try at least)? "wipe data / factory reset" from recovery?
Guys need help urgently.
Today i uninstalled a software called smule and it caused by phone to hang. This automatically restarted my phone and was stuck at the Samsung Logo.
Tried to do soft reset did not work, tried wipe cache from recovery did not work. When I try to mount from the system recovery it will not connect to my PC.
I have 40 GB of pic and videos on my phone which I just can't loose. Need to recover anyhow. Hence one option that i can think of is using the TWRP recovery and mount the phone and copy my important data to pc.
My phone is the 128 GB version Black Pearl. Box say SM-g935FD1
Please help as the data is very precious to me - I don't mind loosing all the apps and settings but can't afford loss of data for me.
I can enter recovery mode and download mode. But can't enter the safe mode.
I have downloaded the following twrp-3.1.1-0-hero2lte.img and ODIN.
Forget twrp. This thing require your /data to be formated first to be able to read data.

No.
TWRP can't mount the disk because it is encrypted.
Data on S7 are encrypted by default.
You need to remove encryption by formatting before twrp be able to mount the disk. So any data before being formatted will be lost and unrecoverable.
Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
No way to recovery. NonXtreme said it as it is.
Just don't do anything that might compromise the data. Wait until someone with experience shows up and meanwhile take it to a samsung store. They might have the tools to bypass whatever causing the bootloop.

is 4 years on xda and over 350 posts not experience?
NonXtreme was correct in what he posted, so why are you saying ignore him?
Damn man. Really need to make regular backups to avoid this my first thought would have been TWRP but of course, as the guys above had said, you simply can't mount /data unless you format it first.
Was it simply an app install? I've never had this sort of thing happen over a simple install.
DON'T DO THIS YET. WAIT FOR FURTHER FEEDBACK.
Guys, could he install fw over the top with odin and home_csc to try avoid wiping data or does this still present an issue with encryption?
Or maybe even just the AP? I can't remember exactly which options wipe data and which ones don't.
Maybe you can try flashing with HOME_CSC. If I remember correctly that doesn't wipe anything - apps and data all remain as-is. Only point where you might be stuck is that during the flashing process or at first boot it will ask for a Pin, and if you have not setup a start up pin in secure startup, you can simply enter "default_password" (without quotes - used to work with older firmwares for S7 edge, but I think I read somewhere that this pin trick now doesn't work with latest one) - so maybe flash the latest and try, if that doesn't work flash an older firmware (with HOME_CSC) and boot and connect your phone to pc and recover - though phone will keep throwing force close errors, and once data is copied flash latest with CSC (instead of HOME_CSC) to wipe the phone clean and start afresh.
Hi everyone,
I've been scouring the forums for days and it's been really helpful but I just can't crack my problem.
My parent's Nexus 10 was having problems but due to the lockdown I couldn't go to help them out, my mum messed around and a factory reset went wrong.
At the moment, the tablet boots only as far as the Google logo. I can get into the bootloader, have unlocked it and tried flashing various stock Roms including the newest one (lmy49j) I'd get this message:
Erase successful, but not automatically formatting.
File system type raw not supported.
Boot up only as far as the Google logo still.
I tried using the flash-all.bat and manually line by line which seemed to give less errors but still no luck.
I've now been messing around with the Nexus Root toolkit v2.1.9 which allows me to boot into twrp and I can push files onto the sdcard. The problem is I can't mount the cache/data/storage so it still fails. I tried changing the file system to EX2 but it won't let me do that. They all show as 0mb. I can't wipe Data or Cache for the same reason, Davlik won't wipe either.
This link is my most promising lead left but I'm running out of ideas, I could be running a c:\Smash fist through tablet.bat command soon lol.

Do you have a stock PIT file for the manta available? I want to go back to stock but I repartitioned mine for a custom install and didn't get the PIT beforehand as I didn't expect to be going back. I like the newer version, but it's too slow for many uses. I know the stock image doesn't have security updates, but since I use it only on my LAN and sometimes for streaming sites, I don't see it being a big risk and it should be a lot more responsive.

Thanks

Hey, no I don't sorry. I'm still having trouble even loading up the version of twrp mentioned in the thread let alone flashing a rom onto it. I can only get into twrp if I use the nexus root toolkit otherwise it just gives me errors relating to not being able to mount cache, very frustrating.
I can only look at it now and again as it sucks all my time up and pisses me off, I'll have another stab at it next week maybe.
