preparing to trade, they want full android... - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a nook color running Chameleon 4.2.2. on emmc. There is guy that wants to trade me for an older laptop, but he wants to keep the android 4.2.2 on the emmc. My question is can I just remove the accounts on it and clear the caches from android and trade or do I need to go back to stock and deregister.
I ask because I am not sure how to deregistrer without going back to stock, but if I do that then I will have to register again to be able to put android back on it. I guess I am a little confused on what I need to do here. I don't want to lose my content as I use the Nook app on my phone and other tablet. I also don't want this guy to be screwed if he goes back to stock....
I hope that made some kind of sense LOL
Thanks
Geeve

First, make a nandroid back up of your Chameleon with your bootable CWM SD. Then go to my NC Tips thread linked in my signature and reinstall stock per item A15 (including using my format zip). Then re-register with B&N. Then erase and de-register. That will remove that device from the B&N server. It will not effect your other registered devices. Then use CWM SD to restore your nandroid backup. Then do a factory reset to remove your personal data and it is ready for its new owner.

Cool Thanks! I wasn't sure if I could log in to B&N and erase and deregister from there. I was unsure what effect it would have on the Nook considering chameleon is running on the Emmc or my other devices..

Dual boot question

If I have 7.1 running off of emmc and want to have a dual boot with the default nook software is there a way to do this without starting over?
Yep. My dual boot guide is in my sig--basically, you'll just do an Advanced Restore of /data only at the end, to get your apps and settings back.
I followed your guide and now I have a perfect dual boot setup. However, if I did not root the default nook software I can't after the fact, correct?
Correct. While it may be possible for someone smarter than me to point Manual Nooter at the alt partition, for now you have to take care of it before you move stock. The pro of leaving stock unrooted is, you don't have to worry about the inability to backup or restore the alt partition, because there aren't that many settings to begin with, and all your apps and purchases are on B&N's servers.

[Q] Returning Nook - partition question

I am returning my NC - dropped it, cracked the frame and volume keys no longer work. It's covered under my extended warranty, thank goodness!
I was running the MiRage rom on my emmc. I was able to restore to stock using TWRP (again, thank goodness for a touch screen recovery!).
I had redone my partitions to have 2 GB for my apps. Not being a developer, just someone who knows how to read instructions well, I'm wondering if when I restored my NC to stock, did it also restore the partitions, or is there something else I need to do before I send it back?
It would not restore original partitions... you will need the zip file for that as well.
So, if I follow the instructions in this thread (using TWRP instead of CWR) and restore to 1GB data/5 GB media, do I then need to reflash B&N stock image afterwards? Do I need to wipe before restoring the partitions?
shouldn't need to reflash stock... wiping not necessary.
@dizzyden - I have seen so many of your posts in the NC forum. Always helpful. Always with answers. Thank you for your help in my time of need.

[Q] CM7 ROM from my Fire to another Fire.

First off: Thank you DEVs, xda and all the peeps that help!! My device is now very very useful to me thanks to you all.
I searched and did find some info, but most of it did not answer what I am wanting to know.
I have CM7 on my Kindle Fire and love it. My son recently picked it up and started playing with it and he loves it too. He has a stock KF, and I bet you can see where this is going. He wants his like mine, and I have no problem flashing his with CM7, but there are a lot of settings and apps that I have installed on mine.
Question is can I backup my current ROM and flash it to his? Is this possible and will it cause it problems? Would it be just like mine, with all the apps and settings once flashed? Would this cause a MAC address issue?
Any info appreciated.
Thank you.
It should work just fine, just be aware that if you do a backup then restore on his device, he will have ALL of your data (emails, web history, etc.) So be cautious. It will be an exact clone!

As long as you have the same recovery on both units, you can do a nandroid backup on one, transfer it to the other and restore. CWMR backups are not compatible with TWRP backups and vice versa.
Some of the earlier CM7 builds had problems with MAC addresses all being set the same, but I don't believe this is an issue any longer. They should all get set properly to the correct hardware values.
My friend was so lazy he wouldnt flash any new roms because he didnt want to set up his stuff all over again. So I would "build" up the rom for him with his accounts and then nandroid... and upload on dropbox he would restore that nandroid and then ***** about the next rom he wanted me to build.
Good to hear and thanks for the warning about him having all my data etc.
Now my next question is: I know how to flash the ROM, but how do I get my ROM in its modified state off my KF so I can flash it to his?
Running TWRP, which I have little experience with.

You will see "Backup" and "Restore" buttons on TWRP. Backup on one and then restore on the other. I think the easiest way for you to do this is to just go ahead and flash your new KF with TWRP and then use TWRP to flash a temporary ROM on it. Once you have the backup on your original KF, you'll find a TWRP directory on your /sdcard (this is the directory you see when you mount your KF as a mass storage device on your computer). Use your computer as a staging area and copy the entire TWRP directory to your computer via USB. Disconnect the old KF, connect the new KF, and then copy that same directory over to the new KF. Then boot into recovery and restore on it.

I did remove some apps that he wont need and my web history. He is only 10 and I am not sure where all I have been on the web with mine.
Thanks for everyone's help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Multi-user support on N7 with ROMs

I have a 32GB N7 that I share with my girlfriend. I quickly learned that if I flash a new ROM, that whole other user's info is gone.
After trying to restore apps and info using both Titanium and ROM Toolbox, I couldn't get it to function like it was before.
I tried to restore to a backup I made prior to doing this and it won't get past the boot screen. I can safely assume that whole other user account is gone. The question is, how can I bring that from one ROM to another? Or how can I restore back to a previous ROM that had it setup?

I could be wrong about this as I am very new to serious mucking around in Android but...
Were ROMs you were using previously based on 4.1.x or older? I know that it is only a very recent version of Android that has proper multi-user support (4.2.2 has it for instance.. I'm not sure about 4.2.1 etc..) and thus now places a "0" folder in which the main user's data is saved, and then there will be "10', "11" etc.. for subsequent users. I'm not sure if your data is gone or not depending on your exact situation, but there are issues that can come from trying to get recovery/data from "pre-MultiUser" and "post-MultiUser" ROMs. Sometimes you may be able to manually move or stipulate where you want to recover from etc... others, it may be gone. There was a post about this from TeamWin and their TeamWinRecoveryProject that explains a bit more of it... http://teamw.in/DataMedia
Not sure if this is helpful, but it is worthwhile to look into regarding multi-user Android.
I am having same problem as OP. I share the N7 with my wife and when I flashed ROM I wasnt able to restore any of her data through Titanium, but it would let me restore everything that was on my main user account. Had to switch back to stock rom nandroid, and her data was still gone and mine was all intact. Now she won't let me put a custom rom on If anyone has any suggestions/fixes I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

[Q] Help walk-through post root/unlocked bootloader process

My apologies if this has been covered. I've successfully rooted and unlocked the bootloader. I've tried my best to do a lot of reading including going through item by item in the xda wiki glossary but I'm still a little confused/want clarification before I actually do anything with my phone.
My goals are:
1) To create a full .img backup of my current system so I can always go back to it if needed/worst case scenario
2) Create a list of all my installed apps. Backup a few select apps that contain data within them that does not get backed up in the cloud or appear in a copyable source anywhere when i browse the phone directories (an app called Pattrn specifically that stores favorited background images..)
3) wipe/clear the my current incarnation of kitkat and re-install it 'fresh' (possibly without the bloat?), then reload desired apps.
4) create a backup .img of this new instance.
-----------------
I'm generally pretty quick to learn technical content but I've honestly tried to fully grok the steps for the last two weeks and haven't gotten there/understand enough to be confident to do what I think I need to do.
can take this to PM if anyone has some patience to work with me. Gladly donate to any app you make or paypal a few bucks if you can help walk me through this..
My understanding is that I need to get TWRP or CWM installed in order to get a custom recovery (as opposed to a stock recovery process)---which will allow me to do step 3. But even getting TWRP going I'm confused..
Thanks

copy it to sdcard or internal storage...open flashify and select recovery image then choose the downloaded file..flash it and restart

Well, with TWRP, there is an option to back up your current system, data, and boot image.
So, let's say you make a backup your stock kitkat rom, you can wipe that, install a compatible rom. And if that fails or you do not like it, you can boot back into TWRP and restore the backup you made with the restore option.
I'm not too sure what you are asking about your apps, but with titanium backup, you can backup any app + their current data. For example, lets say you backup your favorite browser and it has everything just the way you want it, you can back it up with titanium backup, flash your rom, and restore it with titanium backup.
Not sure if that was what you were asking with #2, but if you have another question, ask away. I'm on a road trip so I have plenty of time.

thank you for your fast response, I appreciate it. I can do this--can you just clarify for me to define specifically what 'custom recovery' means?
I might be over-thinking it but I'm still trying to actually understand what custom recovery means-I assume it is in contrast to the current recovery which is still whatever shipped with the phone from verizon/motorola? So the above .img is a kitkat-base recovery (possibly without verizon bloat?)
Thanks

Thank you too for your response!
So yes, I would like to use TWRP for that--make a backup of my current stock rom in all aspects, then start with a fresh instance. Does doing the step the above poster linked basically get TWRP installed as a custom recovery---which then gives me the options to create those backups in the bootloader menu? again sorry for my confusion, I've read the guides and how-to but I'm getting tripped up on some of the lingo/definitions.
On #2 Yes, that is basically what I wanted--I've got titanium backup installed and have backed up a few of these programs to my SD card already. Only have a handful of programs that have any customization that I care to retain.

you can do diff things like poppers162 mentioned you can backup ur entire rom with it...its very easy to flash nd very user friendly to navigate..no the above is a recovery img...you can boot ur phone into it once you flash it..then from there you can backup ur stock rom..and install/flash custom roms with bloat removed..
or another option is just freeze the apps you don't want with titanium backup..its almost as effective as uninstalling
Okay.. I've got TWRP going and creating a backup of my current system onto an external SD card. .. progress.
I've already backed up everything I desired in titanium.
Next up doing a 'clean' start in kitkat--or a slightly improved version. I realize at this point maybe things become more subjective to people's preferences.. I'm not looking to go to CM. I found some stock or a very-nearly-stock version of kitkat I can now 'start' fresh with--the google play edition? or do I need to download "Android 4.4.2 Blur_Version.183.46.10.XT907.Verizon.en.US"? I guess I need some more help at this point. Verizon is my carrier..
Thanks--do appreciate the help! :good:

There's only a handful of roms compatible with the kitkat 3.4 kernel. I, personally, love cm11 test build. It's been going great. I would give it a try. If you don't like it, you have your backup!

success..95% or so
wanted to follow up here.. some of the terms finally clicked in my mind to understand the functions of recovery/fastboot/bootloader/flashing..etc. I wonder if there is a flow-chart type diagram available out there--that type of thing would have really helped to understand--being able to visualize where these different aspects interact and where files etc line up with them.
Short version: successfully running GPE rom smoothly and enjoyably on a 'clean' system.
needless to say I used TWRP to backup my system. And Titanium for specific apps. Used rsdlite to flash the GPE rom from the forum here. Then I factor reset the rom, then I think I formatted internal storage space?? --at that juncture I was a little less clear what the specific sequence should have been to 'start fresh'. Should I have factory reset my device before flashing the rom? Or maybe it really doesn't matter.
Thanks for everyone's help. One thing that didn't migrate over through gcloud backups--embedded images in text msging program. relatively small loss though
cheers
