Did The New Update Brake My ROOT?!

I had everything working just fine, now when I enter to recovery and try to APPLY SDCARD:UPDATE.ZIP it wont work.
So I went back to the basic and flashed several PC36IMG files and when the phone boots up I have no root access! You know that little icon/s like ninja or whatever thats in the startup, its not there at all.
Also with root only apps I dont get asked for user permission like I did before. Is my evo done now or is there a fix for this?
Try unrevoked cuz that's what I had to do to get the root(user permission) after toast's method.

Perm rooted but stuck at sh-3.2# prompt in terminal

So I successfully perm rooted my evo last night and everything in adb went through ok, but now when I try to access superuser permissions through terminal it doesn't work, it just stays at the sh-3.2# prompt. Instead of going to "$" when typing "su", it just stays at that prompt. I don't have an immediate need to access superuser through termial, but I would at least like to figure out the problem. Thanks in advance
In the "How to Root" thread it explains you have to try it a few times to get it to work..I had the same problem..when you go into boot loader it doesn't read S-Off either does it

So it just automatically puts me in root? I guess I was wondering why the "sh-3.2" is in front of it since it didn't do that in the beginning

[Q] Rooting without a sim card?

So I have an old MT4G laying around that already has a void warranty and I don't think it can be activated anymore either (used the insurance to get a new one after the screen cracked and they said to not bother sending it in because of all the problems we were having with them).
Anyway Iv'e been wanting to learn to root for quite awhile now (since I got the original moto droid a week after it came out) and this seems like the perfect opportunity to learn. If I brick it it doesn't really matter since it doesn't get used anyway but my question is can I root it without it having a sim card?
Thanks guys.
yes you can
Yes you can, believe you just need the sim card to access t-mos network. You can still use wifi with the phone to play around with...
Thanks guys, gonna start it today sometime so hopefully tonight I will have my first rooted device
So I used VISIONary and it seems I'm permrooted after temprooting? I have done a battery pull and left it out for about 30 secs, "restarted" and shut down and turned it back on twice and I still have superuser. Not complaining just thought I had to hit "Attempt Permroot now" in order to perm root it.
Any ideas? did I just not leave the batt out for long enough?

VISIONary.apk will NOT perm root your device if the device has not been S-off. the superuser app will always be there, but that doesn't mean you have perm root. go to terminal emulator, type "su" (no quotes) and it will give you "permission denied". you must have an S-off device to perm root. there are plenty of guides out there that will tell you how to root, easiest method is using visionary/root.sh found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225
good luck.

Ahh right, thanks for the info, figured superuser would go away. Thought I read in a couple places that it disappeared after you did a reboot.
Going to start on that method now.

Ok so I have s - off now and when I go into terminal emu I can grant it su. Gonna take the batt out now for like 10 mins to make sure it sticks?
Perm rooted now right? lol
Edit - Still have s - off and can still grant superuser to apps.
So what now? haha
Guess I make a recovery image now before I go any further? Or should I have done that before I started all this? haha

It's got one, you just have to press the menu button. And if you want to quote people in a reply just hold down on their post.
And the App version you downloaded is what's 4.x, the RECOVERY Version should be 3.0.2.4. It'll be the first option inside the application, can't miss it lol

Yea I downloaded the free app and there doesn't seem to be a way to reply in it. Checked menu and long hold on posts.
Ahhh ok cool. Sorry like I said I'm new to this. I hit the flash thing at the top of the app. That should be all I need to recover if anything goes wrong right? Or do I need to do a nandroid? Backup? Again sorry like I said new to this and still trying to figure everything out.
Ok hoping I didn't do anything stupid but I downloaded virtuous via clockwork it got done and asked to reboot and start the install so I started and I hit I think load from SD card or something close to that and since then it's been stuck on the what I'm gonna call the tophat screen lol (clockwork logo). Does it just take awhile to do it's thing or did I screw up?
Edit - Nvm, I'm dumb, hit the home key and the menu came back. Haha wow.

My tab did the same, but when I check root with terminal emulator, i discovered that my tab was no longer rooted. Type su into the terminal emulator field.
Install iconiaRoot and unroot it,the same way you rooted it.You should have made an initial backup from the beginning, but iconiaRoot should work.
nope, probably won't work.

Root Questions/Help

Sorry if this has been covered before, but I searched up and down XDA and google for a solution. Here is the deal; Im trying to root my phone and Im having some issues. Im getting unknown user root in Terminal when I try to run the commands from this thread.I have both versions of Visionary and I believe I have temp rooted the phone. This is where it starts to get strange. Superuser.apk is installed, but Im never prompted for SU permissions. The only app that requested it was Visionary when I tried the permaroot option. Also, I got the system to be r/w via visionary, so I tried to delete some bloat. I used root explorer to do so. But the apks I deleted are still in the app drawer, and after reboot, are still in system/app. Im really super confused by all of this, and hope you guys can give me a hand. This is a little bit different then rooting my vibrant lol.

Go to theunlockr.com and find the mytouch write ups there. They are root.sh method and garanteed to work. There both how to gain root and s-off write ups there.
Its what I used and is super simple. I've rooted countless mytouch with the same write up.

Do you run Visionary+ before typing "su" in Terminal Emulator?
Does it complete successfully?
Can you try to run any other root program (like Titanium Backup) to verify that you actually have root access?

Try another version of Visionary+, because the current version doesn't root you.
Make sure that you are indeed on 2.2.1, because if you're on 2.3.4 - Visionary can't root at all.

I had the same problem last week when trying to root my replacement phone after downgrading it to 2.2.1. The visionary app that I used before didn't work this time. I had to download it again and this time it worked. Before deleting the current visionary app make sure to clear it's data prior to uninstalling it then reboot the phone then try again. That worked for me!
Since you've already tried rooting it with so many methods, I'll suggest you restore the phone to factory settings and start over.
