I stalled visionary from akaskriller.com since it wasnt on the market. I installed rom manger, titanium back up. Uinstalled some bloatware etc... But how do I know if im temp or perm rooted?????
Uncheck "run on boot" option in Visionary, pull your battery, restart the phone and try running su in terminal emulator. If you get permission denied - you're temp rooted.
Ok km going to try it now

Manual method is soooooo easy I don't understand the desire to use VISIONary+ for permroot. Its not even real permanent root.
S-OFF is NEEDED for custom ROMs... so if you don't want to use custom ROMS, stick with temproot with VISIONary+
If you DO want custom ROMS and true R/W access, do the manual method. I see 0 point in using the one click permroot.

So if it reads "s-off" on the boot screen after reboot it's perm root?

Not really, you have have s=off and not be rooted. all s=off means is the security protocol will not check to see if the phone has been tampered with. IF you have s=off and you go to visionary and click "temp toot" then "perm root" your phone will be rooted until you unroot it. Since the security protocol will not remove the SU access.
If I wanted, can I odin my phone to stock dg27 and OTA to DI18 and use z4root to root? Then once I do that, would I still need a pc to install clockwork? I want a fresh epic, but I'm sure ima miss root priveleges and wanna quick root and install clockwork without having to use my pc...

You should be able to download the CWM Rom Manager from the market. Then select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" and you should be good to go.
They finally fixed it!?

I guess I recall having a problem with it at first too. Turns out superuser was prompting for root rights but wasn't displaying on top of the CWM screen. I think I just tried it until one time SU came up properly, then the flash worked.
Ok, I'm ready to root my phone and wanted to install CyanogenMod on my MyTouch 4g. I'm following their wiki document (can't post the link here, it won't let me), but can't get passed step #6. When I enter the string "adb push su /sdcard/su", I get "failed to copy 'su' to '/sdcard/su' : Permission Denied
I skipped down a few steps and tried the 3rd line, "adb push rage /data/local/tmp/rage", it returned "5 kb/s (5392 bytes in 1.00s)." So that appears to have worked.
Any ideas?

Try using this method

If you wish to use the CM method you need to download/install VISIONary, and temp root the phone phone with "set system to r/w" and "run VISIONary.sh" both checked marked. prior to doing anything.
IF the link i supplied earlier i would high suggest looking for the thread called "post your eMMC serial number" in the general section, some information you might want to read.

If I follow the link you posted, will I still be able to install CM?

The link i posted will turn your s-off, so yes you can do what ever you want given you know what your doing.
just a side-note, once your s-off you can flash whatever MyTouch 4G ROM you want. Cyanogen or other.
just make sure to install the Recovery Image. That is where you flash stuff from.
and keep in mind that is a Wikipage, anyone can edit it. Someone may of removed it.
When you see a "permission denied", that means you have a lack of SU access. Visionary will restore that SU access.
Wow, thanks for the info. I think your few posts put all the research i've done into perspective. Just to clarify, when you say "install the recovery image," what exactly do u mean? Is that like running the ClockWorkMod Recovery in ROM Manager?

pretty much, you can download Clockwork ROM Manager from the market place and having it "flash the recovery image". Or if you are familiar with ADB you can download the image directly from Koush's website and flash it from the ADB command prompt.

Some phones are tricky and wont root with the same methods. If you are daring you may try gfree method, but again like above read the emmc serial thread to gain perspective on whats happening with supposedly inferior emmc chips.
Ok ill look into that cause I tried this method didn't work was gonna try adb method Idk to much bout gfree

Without sounding like a jackwagon. You might want to take a peek into the "post your eMMC serial number" thread under the general section. It's becoming obvious that if you cannot root with the root.sh method your phone might have a bad eMMC. I would highly encourage you to look into that, along with the thread in my signature to get ADB up and running to determine if you have a serial number for a problematic eMMC.
If you do have have a problematic eMMC, i wouldn't perma root it or flash a new ROM.

To All Those That Helped...
I was finally able to root my phone and start installing custom roms. In fact, I think I've turned into a ROM-Whore.
What I think did it, someone previous wrote, there seems to be a delay with the cache partition on the MT4Gs. So after I got S=off, I didn't immediately try and run Visionary again. Instead, I waited several hours (not by choice, something came up). When I attempted after that, whallla!
I've since been wiping and flashing, wow.
Now if I can get Swype to install.... LOL
I had trouble getting s-off with the unlockr,adb,wiki,z4root,newer visionary guides. Just gave up last night after that, he next morning did another search and found this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995549
I had s-off in like 2 minutes... smh
THANK YOU HTC for finally realizing this shyt is a headache and unlocking your future phones /rant
I followed multiple steps for installing perm root on a friends Mytouch and for some reason we could not get the s-off feature to work. I noticed too we do have SU access via adb or terminal but I still never could get s-off. After we got root we used rom manager to install clockwork and after the fact it installed 3.0.2 i believe it completely borked the recovery. I stepped it down to 3.0.0 and still had the same issue. The main reason i wanted to get s-off was to adb flash the recovery but I got a signature fail. Any ideas or suggestions to get this working correctly? Rom Manager will not let me install 2x cwm basically stating it can not install it period. I also tried the batch file root method same issue. Thanks for your help in advance.
Please look at the "True permaroot and S-OFF" thread in Development section, and execute step-by-step.
If your friend's MT4G is running Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3), you'll need to use Gingerbreak instead of Visionary+ to get root access.

If you are following the ./gfree method step by step it will root your phone.
If you are using the root.sh script and it's not working chances are you may have a bad eMMC chipset and it will not root properly.
I know HTC said they would be pushing a update to close the exploit hole that is used to root our phones but i don't think it's been pushed yet.
Im not sure but it said something about not being able to back up partition or something but either way nice HTC is becoming a motorola nice

HTC isn't "becoming a Motorola". HTC, is completely different. We do have a locked bootloader. But it's easily unlock-able whereas Moto's aren't.

I don't know what to tell you. There are several threads out there regarding how to root your phone. Both in a .gfree form and a root.sh form. One of those 2 work for 99.9% of EVERYONE.
You might try finding someone who put together a .zip that can be flashed through the android recovery(white screen with boot options, etc.). Otherwise you can get the RUU and return to stock. After that follow the directions step by step and DO NOT mix methods. This should result in an S-OFF root, if you did your homework correctly.

As someone already explained before, when the security is on, no matter the amount of flashing you're going to try - it won't get you anywhere, since it won't be written to the actual ROM, and will be gone on restart.
Unless you pick a guide, follow it exactly, and post here everything that doesn't look proper - I don't think the forum can help you much.
Here's one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
Follow it and post anything that doesn't look good. Including your bootloader version.
The root is sticking on reboots but still no soff that's what i have been saying and i followed the guides to a t its not my first picnic rooting or roming a phone this one just has me stumped

What does your bootloader show when you boot into it?
For the root to stick after boot, you had to have S-OFF, otherwise the eMMC wouldn't have been written to.
Having no info from you, as I said, it's impossible to help. If all this thread is just a complaint - by all means, but in that case there's no point in helping you. If you want help - you need to provide enough details for people to help you. Obviously, nobody can figure out anything from "I can't get s-off".
I do a adb reboot bootloader and i get us fast boot up top it says s-on but if i reboot to the os i still have root access for instance in titanium backup or Rom manager of that helps any

Sorry if this has been covered before, but I searched up and down XDA and google for a solution. Here is the deal; Im trying to root my phone and Im having some issues. Im getting unknown user root in Terminal when I try to run the commands from this thread.I have both versions of Visionary and I believe I have temp rooted the phone. This is where it starts to get strange. Superuser.apk is installed, but Im never prompted for SU permissions. The only app that requested it was Visionary when I tried the permaroot option. Also, I got the system to be r/w via visionary, so I tried to delete some bloat. I used root explorer to do so. But the apks I deleted are still in the app drawer, and after reboot, are still in system/app. Im really super confused by all of this, and hope you guys can give me a hand. This is a little bit different then rooting my vibrant lol.

Do you run Visionary+ before typing "su" in Terminal Emulator?
Does it complete successfully?
Can you try to run any other root program (like Titanium Backup) to verify that you actually have root access?

Try another version of Visionary+, because the current version doesn't root you.
Make sure that you are indeed on 2.2.1, because if you're on 2.3.4 - Visionary can't root at all.

I had the same problem last week when trying to root my replacement phone after downgrading it to 2.2.1. The visionary app that I used before didn't work this time. I had to download it again and this time it worked. Before deleting the current visionary app make sure to clear it's data prior to uninstalling it then reboot the phone then try again. That worked for me!
Since you've already tried rooting it with so many methods, I'll suggest you restore the phone to factory settings and start over.
