Software update - Galaxy S II General

I just clicked on software update/check for update in the 'About Phone' section of my settings. I've never clicked it before. It said new firmware required. So I let it download the new software. Then it said charge battery before updating, and then it let me choose when to resume the update. I chose 3 hours. So I'm on stock Android 2.3.3. Gingerbread XWKE7 . What will it update to? I'm a bit worried now, is it going to wipe stuff? Everything's working good so I don't 'need' to update, but it would be nice to.

Update will be 2.3.4 or 2.3.5 .
jje

Interesting... Just noticed on mine too.
Won't have a chance to do it though until Monday.
Roman5, can you tell us more of this please:-
1. What version?
2. Did it remove anything (shouldn't have)?
3. Anything new noted?
4. Any speed/battery issues?
Thanks...

I think it will be 2.3.4 XWKI4 (updated mine via Kies couple of days ago), doubt it will be 2.3.5 so fast after 2.3.4 because the providers have to check it and add their bloatware to it.
I lost a few of my Apps what wasn't on my SD card, contacts, messages etc, but did a backup on Kies of everything I wanted and restored it after firmware was updated.
Battery life improved a little bit, the fonts are bolder, not really much difference to be honest.

it will be stock 2.3.4 XWKI4 if your on XEU product code.....
ditch that and install 2.3.5 KI8 through Odin

Thanks Guys..... I've left you both a vote each.

and i have in reply
ive just flashed KI8 from KI3 - i used Intratechs KI8 with old bootloaders so i can reset the kernal counter in download mode, but added the XEUKH2 CSC file into Odin thus giving me XEU CSC not NEE as the original firmware - works a treat, non wipe so all apps and settings remain and its very snappy. also brings you upto 2.3.5

Yay, no wipe! This is what I got. I thought it might also update Android but it hasn't. What benefits can I expect from the updated Gingerbread XWKF3?

Wow, I never used Kies before, but now that I have a wifi router, it works!
So, it told me to type in a url into my PC browser and now I see all my phone stuff on my desktop pc screen. Cool.
Now what? What's K14, what's XEU and how do I do this? Will this involve any wiping?

For Vodafone Romania update is to 2.3.5 ( BUKI1 baseband and BUKI3F kernel ).
Is not yet available through Kies but only OTA.

All done, on 2.3.4 now and Gingerbread.XWKI4
http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/4752/successfulupgrade.jpg
It wasn't without it's problems though. Several times it would not connect when I connected the phone to kies and had to reinstall the drivers. The most worrying time was this
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/5398/failedupgrade1jpg.jpg
http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/9372/failedupgrade2jpg.jpg
And on the phone was the green android and a message saying "do not disconnect target!!". After disconnecting, fortunately it rebooted normally and nothing on the phone had changed. So I followed the instructions, and it went through the whole re-downloading of the firmware, and all went well in the end. Phew!

Do you have a Vodafone Romania branded device and you were able to update through OTA ? Mine says: Samsung account already added and that's it. No update

Yes, I managed to do the OTA update this evening and it has remained on Android 2.3.3
It was worrying as it actually carried out 4 yes four updates.
I didn't notice what it did with the second update but here's a list of the versions it installed:-
Original ~ Baseband = KDH
Gingerbread = KDD
Update 2 ~ Baseband = KDJ
Gingerbread = KE2
Update 3 ~ Baseband = KE4
Gingerbread = KE7
Update 4 ~ Baseband = KE7
Gingerbread = KF3

Update fail
My Czech Vodafone (non-branded) got it's OTA update, first (bigger one) came trough all right, the second one (smaller) did not. After installing and rebooting it is stuck on the first black screen with white text with the name of the phone. No reboot helped, no factory reset from recovery mode:/ nothing!! it is so frustrating !!
any ideas?

How long did you leave it for?
Mine took well over 10mins sitting there at that screen.... Eventually it rebooted.
TYhe same was with the forth update during the applying mode.... It remained on 86% for well over 5mins.

Yes, it was not easy I had the phone rooted, OTA was not working ( update stopped at 7% saying that I need to contact samsung or do upgrade through Kies ). I installed BUKE5 (unroot) then OTA updated to G1 then I1 ( actually was more updates 3-4, no idea how many exactly ).
Funny is that after upgrade Kies say " you are f.ed, you don't have an official version"

Apparently not, still only accepts digits.
I've yet to install it, but checked the vodafone forums, and this is a reported issue.
Been stated that Vodafone branding (startup, 360) has all been removed, can someone confirm, I'm not in a position to update yet?
Does anyone know if
1/ this is the same old WJPA thats been floating around for a while?
2/ the CF-root we've been using will work to root this?

If you check on Voda Live's page about the update it does say Voda startup and shut down aminmation removed along with 2 pre loaded games and 360 applications. But you can download them yourself if you really must have them.
Thankfully Voda IE were knocking out unbranded, unbloated and unlocked Galaxies when I got mine.
Although I've flashed it that many times now I'm buggered if I can remember what flavour of Eclair it came with lol
Can't confirm

Kies regards DocRom 7.5 as already installed...
So I guess the upgrade is old news for anyone who is on Doc's rom anyway - so no point in upgrading to their JPA - unless they did something to it to improve the (still not great) GPS.
Mark.
I got the text from Vodafone this morning but Kies says
"Current Version: PDA: JM1/PHONE:JG6/CSC:JG7
This device's version cannot be updated"
Could this have something to do with the fact that I originally updated to the Nordic Froyo in September via a registry hack and then went back to JM1 via Odin flashing?
I was hoping I could return to branded official Vodafone Firmware incase I need to return under warranty.

Seeing you already know how to use odin, then you should go to http://samfirmware.webs.com/ and find the firmware that your phone came with, download it, and flash all three of those files using ODIN. Then each of those three components should revert to what they should be. PDA, Phone, CSC. Use the correct PIT file (also listed on that site, and Id do a factory reset and repartition when using Odin to basically remove as much of the existing stuff as possible. (backup with titanium pro & appbrain first)

That's exactly what I did do when flashing back to JM1, I flashed all three files. So are you saying that PHONE:JG6/CSC:JG7 are wrong for JM1, ,ight sound stupid but I'm kind of new to this.
Edit: I just downloaded the JM1 Firmware and those are the correct components. Anyone got any ideas?
Second edit: I then downloaded a second file from there with ostensibly the same firmware which comes with all three files marked JM1. I'm going to try flashing that.

PDA: KF3
Phone: KE7
CSC: KF1

Done, at some points I thought Kies crashed but update went fine and everything is at it was (restore was fine). Lets see what KF3 brings with it.

No I bought it from Amazon. Its the german unbranded version. Maybe you have the o2 branded version.
Mine is GT-I9100KLADBT the firmware is XWKF3.

Wow...
At first i had the KF1 (ARB) >.<..
i couldn't flash, then i flashed the KE2 Firmware, but it didn't change the CSC =(
Then i tried KE7.. didn't work.
Flashed a MultiCSC and selected via *#272*IMEI# the DBT CSC, and it still didn't work, so i flashed back the KE2 and now it works.. finaly
//it's respectably faster
I'm not sure if its a branded. i dont have nothing to do with O2 on the phone .
i have GT-I9100KLAVIA with multi-csc
would i get the update if i changed the CSC to DBT instead of VIA? would i lose the warrenty if changed the CSC ?
i would be greatfull for ur answer(ich bedanke mich im voraus)
no, you won't lose your warranty...
From my experience, you need KE2 and DBT (you can select it, when you type in "*#272*YOUR IMEI#" but it will do a reset :-S
With KE7 it didn't work!!
it didn't work!!
i got the famous (this version cannot be upgraded)
Wow, finally we get an update.
I have just updated and everything went fine.
This update is also available, and has been available, in the firmware thread in dev forum.
actually, i was thinking about opening this thread this morning, but since i saw the rom collection thread had it already and assuming everybody connects their device to kies at least once a day, i decided to try it first.
has anybody noticed any improvements/bugs yet? people in the kf3 uk thread seem to experience bugs in IM, i don't really use it, since it does not offer my preferred messengers, but after opening it at least it did not force close or anything.
this was my first update on android and i created a backup on kies beforehand and did the update, when switching it on for the first time, everything was just the way i left it before. does that mean, the phone performed a factory reset and kies automatically restored my backup or was there no factory reset at all? is it important to do a factory reset after an update and is restoring a kies complete backup a good idea or should i reset and then make all my settings manually and just sync my contacts and stuff back?
unfortunately there are no changelogs for the roms, so i don't know, what exactly should have been fixed with this update, but i can see absolutely no difference yet, if it weren't for the new data in the phone information, i would have thought the update was unsuccessful
what I read here and noticed so far, too, was that the SMS Themes are gone. And I updated my GFs phone too (also KE2 DBT) and now that she's on KF3 I tried Samsung Apps. I tried to update KIES but it said "not for your device" which made me wonder and the besides that I can't seem to find the camera firmware updates anymore, I searched the whole Samsung Apps list and there is none, not on my phone, not on her's.
one thing that changed, is the vlingo voice command, i only noticed it, because all of a sudden, it showed up as the last app in my app drawer.
experiences are posted here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158734
spoiler alert, it's not that great, especially for german users with english system language as myselt.
compared to ke2 the battery life of this firmware is bad.
lost 23% of battery over night in 9 hours.
android os is @ 59% (48m 50s)
maybe a hard reset will fix something but currently I'm not happy with that.
3g data stall bug is still present with O2 Germany. Disappointed.

Check the KIES description in Samsung Apps, this version is for Eclair 2.1 only
And the camera update did already disapear before, it's not related to the updated firmware.
Just tried to update my phone (not rooted) from KE7. All seemed to went well, but then Kies showed a hint window with 4 Points in it, but instead of letters and words there where only quares in the Box.
I only had a button with "Confirm" and now kies is showing its normal UI (like with no phone connected) and my Samsung shows the "Downloading..." screen with the green android. And this since 10 mins.
Any suggestions/help?
Edit: Okay, just removed the battery, phone booted up normal, but still with the old version. Kies is really a pain!
the battery drain got worse for me as well. and i just had the unpleasant experience that both the new vlingo and the old vlingo work terrible for me now. i was so glad, the update was released but one thing i never thought about was: how does one "officially" flash back to ke7? i want to keep the ability if they eventually release a better firmware and i am using my device pretty much as stock, no root or major customizations. do i need to start learning how to flash with odin now?
could any of you advise me on how to properly set up voice command for optimal performance?
my system is set to english, but i want voice command in german, but it reads out english words with german pronounciations, "maessahge" instead of either message or "nachricht". also there seem to be several engines and so many settings. i don't get it, i can pick vlingo or google, in another menu it is samsung or pico. in voice input and output settings i can set the language to german or many other languages, when i change some setting, it is only available in korean, then again, in voice talk there are entirely different settings. i totally don't get it. if anybody set it up to work properly, please post your settings

It is gingerbread, while ICS already started rolling for other countries.

Appreciate this update. I agree, Sammy must be smoking some pot to release GB instead of ICS. Unless the're aware of the ICS Kernel Bug and don't want to risk the number of ICS crashes in India

Hasn't this been available OTA for a while now? I think this is what I was on before I moved to LPY/LPF and it came as a smaller update.
/could be wrong, but I *think* I was on DDLC1 before the ICS flashing
I too think i was on DDLC!1 before moving on to LPY

No, in India, last official was DDLB2, You'd probably flashed German LC1, so as me

Does fus downloader resume a download?
Samsung pushing Gingerbread update in India
So when Kies told me I had a new firmware update, I was overjoyed, however it turns out to be a GB update
PDA:LC1/PHONE:LC1/CSC:LC1 (INU)
Kernel 2.6.35-N7000DLC1
So anybody installed this ROM to find out what's new?
I think nobody interested gingerbread any more.
Not a single review.

Yeah, kinda expected. Hoping that the official Indian version of ICS releases soon.
Strangely No OTA notification and when i check manually in settings still shows no update. Currently updating from KIES but it deadly slow.
I am willing to wait for ICS till the samsung owns up the EMMC bug and fix it.
Started downloading via KIES. Will update once done.

It's here for phones with the XEU CSC. If you're on a Carphonewarehouse (CPW) CSC I guess there's no update for you yet.
use checkfus and dowmload the rom of your choice cpw is on it too

On my 2.3.6 LA6 ROM I've got JKay's mod, everything's super stable and there are no issues with Recovery turning the phone into a brick. Does it really make sense to upgrade just now?

Well I took the plunge. First I tried Criskelo's ICS V5.1, but I didn't like the theme and very quickly found things that didn't work properly, so then I tried stock LQ2, using Mobile Odin Pro to keep root and the CF-Root V5.6 kernel.
It's early days, but so far I'm happy. Getting set up was a pain - it was only after 2 attempts that I discovered that Bookmark Sort & Backup isn't ICS compatible and was screwing up my Browser. I therefore had to do 2 complete wipes using CF-Root v5.6. This claims to have (probably) fixed the superbrick bug, and it certainly worked fine for me - whew!
I'm missing all the toggles of Jkay because there isn't a version of the 15 toggle mod for stock LQ2, but hopefully that'll come soon and SwipePad replaces the quick launcher panel nicely.
So no regrets yet, but there's still the odd lag here and there, and I can't say it's a significantly better experience. Also I can't sketch to save myself, so the new S-Pen applications aren't important to me. Still, got to move with the times! There's still nothing to replace my wonderful Note.
UK ICS Build (Carphone Warehouse) for Note is super stable
DQ of the day?
Downloaded & installed N7000XEULP4 via this site.
I intend to root again as mobile odin failed to inject root - yes I followed the good Dr's direction.
I used PC Odin, reset to factory in stock recovery (post flash) after 15min wait at the Samsung logo (very tentatively re-set due to massive information about deleting killing partitions, mmc sections etc & the unit is now one stock ics 4.0.3
So after I have rooted following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360.
I wish to re-load a previous ics (paranoid android) am I likely to hit the 'brick-wall')?
Need to ask I killed one note already :mad,
