Hey all,
So I'm now the proud owner of a brand new Xperia Play, but one thing I'm trying to figure out is why the phone seems to effectively go into sleep mode when you lock the screen.
What I mean is - on my old phone, I could be listening to music, lock/turn off the screen, and the music keeps playing. It continued running in the background when the screen was turned off. On the Xplay however, if I lock/turn off the screen, the music stops. In other words, I can't actually do anything like listen to music or stream radio or anything like that when the screen is locked/turned off. As soon as I turn the screen back on (I don't even need to unlock it, just switch it back on), the functionality resumes. But I don't want the screen on when the phone is in my pocket, because sometimes it still manages to try to dial emergency numbers, not to mention it needlessly runs down the battery.
I've searched through all of the phone settings, and I've tried Googling answers, but I can't find a solution to this anywhere. I want to be able to lock/turn off the screen and continue listening to my music or streamed radio - can this even be done on the XPlay?
Thats strange, I dont have this problem, i often play my music when the screen is off. Are you using and ram or cpu optimisation apps? That may be killing apps when phone is idle?

No...in fact I've installed nothing on the phone yet (waiting for a bigger SD card to arrive), and it's not rooted, so everything is stock standard.
Have you tried listening to streaming radio with the screen turned off?

I just tried now with tune in radio. Worked fine with screen off no issues

Okay I've figured out what the problem is. It's not the screen lock, it's the browser. I'm using the standard browser that came with the phone, but streaming radio stops whenever the browser window is not in focus.
For example, I had the streaming radio going, and pressed the home button, and the same thing happened - streaming radio stopped. The browser should be still running in the background, but for some reason it seems to "pause" any streaming it's doing, until that specific window comes back into focus.
Wow...that's lame.
Any way around this? Unless Android doesn't really have true multitasking and apps in the background are only in a suspended state.

I suggest using an actual radio app. Are you trying to listen to a local station or something?
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
Yes I'm listening to a local station, but the Xplay doesn't have an FM Radio. A radio app won't help me. Hence why I'm streaming it.
Doesn't change the fact that Android is just doing a pretend "suspend apps in the background until you return to them" multitask, not actual real multitasking. From what I'm reading, this seems to be what the default browser does, and if I download another browser, like dolphin, firefox or opera, I should be able to get around it...can anyone confirm this?

Try Opera mobile. (not mini). If the site your streaming from uses flash, its super resource heavy in the stock browser. Thats why its getting shut down.
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk
There are many apps in the market that allow you to stream Internet sources. A prior poster mentioned the same, they were not referring to FM radio.
I have almost the same but not exactly as that.. When I play music using headphone, then turn off my screen, the effects that I made in equalizer(unlock) app also stops. I tried different players but having the same result.. I'm still figuring out what seems to be the problem..

It does that when theres not enough memory to multitask all the apps you want, however If you were say running pandora, and your browser and something else youd be fine. The site you're using likely uses flash or something else that is resource heavy to play the music. The system doesn't know exactly what the flash program is doing (as it just runs the flash app and then the app runs in the flash sandbox) so if you let the screen shut off or you shut it yourself the system suspends it to free up memory for stuff like text messaging and email to work.
Maybe one of the other browsers has a work around for this but I doubt it. However there may be an app out there that plays internet streams and stays active, I would look for that.

Hi there,
i noticed that some apps start itself automatically and run in the background?! That is very annoying. I am observing this behaviour once or twice a day with taskiller advance. Suddenly apps like ak notepad, last.fm and locale are running even though i didnt started them. I guess this is not normal?

I have noticed this as well on my Rogers Magic (32A). I think that if a process or other app (like email) needs to, it will activate a related process for it to function (touchscreen, keyboard, etc.)
When using AppKiller after having the phone do nothing for a while or just one app, I'll see a few others listed. Naturally everything ends up loading the "touchscreen" process...
I'm not sure if that means SMS will show up when typing an email because they share the keyboard (as if activating one typing app activates them all)... I've never tested that specifically.
It would be cool if it didn't need to do this, but I've become accustomed to just touching the kill all apps button
Cheers,
Chris

that sound reasonable but why is tunewiki starting for no reason or dolphin browser? Could it be bad programming? I noticed this behaviour only with a few apps but its quite anoying. They eat up memory and slow down the phone if i am correct?!

He has a point there, I don't think a third party app would start another third party app, unless they worked in conjunction. As for the problem, try reinstalling the apps.

i already tried. It doesnt matter if it is a stock, cyanogen or dwang rom. Taskkiller is showing me all this selfstarting apps after reboot and then they randomly start with no reason. Most annoying is dolphin browser. Kill it and its back in a matter of seconds eating up precious ram. Tunewiki, AK Notepad stay at least closed...
I've also wondered this and I've noticed Dolphin Browser and the TorProxy app always running, and respawn when they are terminated. I am sure it's because the apps are somehow configured to run as services, so started looking at linux services in adb. In adb shell I checked 'service list' but they were not in there, I wonder if there is a generic service that is there to keep apps alive. I'm interested to know the answer if anyone can throw some more light on it!
I noticed whenever I kill all apps, then for example, switch from 3g to wifi, or 3g to 2g, etc., dolphin browser and imusic will open in the background.... which is annoying.
Why would switching to 3g, 2g, or wifi make these apps open?
curious...

i tried this and after switching 3g and wifi off an on an instance of wifi static, sms/mms and handcent spawned. Even though the usual suspects didnt start most of this automagically starting programms are indeed in need of a data connection (tunewiki, dolphin browser, locale...). We could start a list of self starting programms!?
okay, i am pretty sure now that apps are starting when wifi is on, an then the phone is switched off, then wifi goes to sleep and when the phone is turned on again wifi also and apps which need wifi are starting.
Is this only bothering me? I mean it does deplete ressources/battery life, right? I am using a tasmanager which says that i have about 45mb of free memory. After resuming from sleep with all those self starting apps it is reduced to 25-30mb.
Can anybody confirm that this shouldnt happen?
btw dolphon browser seems to have been fixed. It doesnt start after waking up the phone.
EDIT: okay, i just found this little app:
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-elsdoerfer-android-autostarts-jppi.aspx
maybe this is the solution. I am going to try it.
yeah I have the same issue both on cyan and dwang. on first boot ill run task manager and have a huge list of things, sometimes i have to kill a few times. then ill notice the phone is bogged, and check task manager and have tons of things running again.
Hi Guys, just thought id post my thoughts on the Leo.
Ive been using mine now for over 2 weeks having come from an N95(and several failed attempts at finding something I liked inbetween including various iphones, N97 etc etc) so to the thoughts.,
The screen for me was a bit tricky as many have said before, I have huge hands, but decided to persevere.
Has to be said that after about a 10 day period typing messages etc became much easier, after 2 weeks it was brilliant, but then came the eureka moment, which it has to be said was'nt good for me, but telling all the same.
After flashing the ROM, the typing experience became similar to a fair proportion of others on here, infuriating!
Now thinking logicly about it, I decided it couldn't be the screen as was fine before, only thing changed was the ROM, so was software, tried a screen align, hmmm, worse still, did it again, slightly better, but still no cigar, went and checked settings and set to how id had it before, no vibrate(seems to fubar typing), keyboard click on, screen click on, correct as you type on, complete words in both XT9 and ABC both on and did screen align again, now zoila, its better than before(after another screen align) no more false inputs although xt9 has to learn my vocab again(annoying) but it really is a revelation.
Now the only thing annoying me is the long sms list issue (although partialy sorted by selecting all messages and going in through WM)
Can I just add, absolutely epic site guys and thanks to all those that spend there own time making the WM experience better for all!!
Noooo! you've got it all wrong. You're supposed to try typing for 5 minutes, throw your toys out the pram and go buy an iPhone.. *then* come on to xda developers and post a nice long rant about how poor the entire phone / windows mobile is (bonus points for expletives and spelling mistakes).
Fixing problems in an intelligent, logical manner? whatever next?!
I just got my HTC HD2 from Royal Mail. Everything seems to be working flawlessly. The screen is just gorgeous and the navigation is really smooth and snappy. The videos online really do not do it justice.
I've just got a few of questions. I heard that Opera does not support flash, is this true? and will this change in the future?
I tried using IE to open youtube but it doesn't seem to play anything. It has the flash 9 logo and that's it. How do I play videos via the web browser?
Also, when I open up IE it says that it connects using my data plan and I may get charged. Does it not work over WiFi?
I'm just uploading files onto it right now but yes, this device has had my jaw on the floor since I opened the packaging. By far the best phone I have ever owned.

Opera doesn't support flash.
Use the You Tube app already on your handset, it works perfectly.
For playing videos within your browser, download the Skyfire browser for free. I don't like the interface and therefore only use it when I have to but it supports flash and you can play videos and surf for porn on it lol.
gamma500. looks like you still need to find the return key (aka as enter key) as this is the only thing missing in your message. Or did you type it on a PC keyboard, and is the return key (aka as enter key) broken?

Opera doesn't support flash and IE only has 'flashlite' which isn't suitable for playing video. You will need to download Skyfire but the You Tube app will be in your start menu - press the icon at the top left of the screen or the windows button in the middle at the bottom - then scroll through the icons.

Fantastic! Disabling the vibrate response was one of the best things I could do! I can actually type for long periods of time with little errors and the XT9 and ABC is working great now, I didn't realise it could learn... so have been typing in all of my Northern Irish phrases that we use over here!
I'm happy once again, I'm really starting to love this phone; was a bit doubtful at the start and was thinking my N95 8gb looked like a good option to go back to but my faith is growing in this device by the day!
Once again to OP, thanks!
It Just gets better with time Rossimac, which only became apparent after having flashed the ROM and thereby losing two weeks of it.
Hi guys, I have a problem with my mediascape, when I play any music and the phone goes to sleep mode automatically or by me manually pressing the power button the music cuts off for a few seconds and then restarts from the beginning. If I play from a playlist and I'm using the phone then decide to put it to on sleep mode, it restarts from the beginning of the playlist, or if I'm going through the playlist and decide I want to hear a song and I select to go to next song, as soon as the screen turns off its back to the start again. This means I have to listen to a playlist from start and wait until a certain song comes up rather than being able to select a song.
I have tried the following already to see if I can solve the problem, I've gone to application settings and for mediascape clear data, clear cache, force stop and also the same for mediscape plugin manager settings. Ive checked my settings in task panel and set both mediascape/plugin manager to ignore, so therefore the task is not automatically killed.
Hope someone may be able to help me out or maybe there's someone else with the same problem. It's an incredibly annoying problem. I do not really want to reinstall the firmware again, as that is what I had to resort last time I had problems with my phone. Resetting to factory settings does not work correctly either it has to be reinstalled.
Any help would be great.
Thanks

Just use Mort Player, it is the best free player out there and put all the rest to shame.
Stick with meridian music player.. Drains battery less than mediascape, allows you to add playlists, looks ok and also has a nice music control widget. Prefer it more than mediascape.. hope it solves your issues an all

Trust me...go to the Market and get Mort Player...it does it all, looks great, custom skins etc, used squat for the battery and works so well.
I do use Mortplayer too, and works fine. You can start it just by touching play button on your MW600 headphones with no need to start it from the phone. And it can read music from specific folders. For me the best too.
question?

This seems like the most pertinent question.
Any kind of task killer, battery saving app or similar would be good to list here so we can test for ourselves and see what's up.
My advice would be to uninstall any task management, power saving apps, restarting your phone and see if you still have the same issue.
I've debranded my phone and mediascape works fine!

bTunes is better than any other music media application
Hi, my phone is factory unlocked sim-only.
I've tried the other music player but that did not work, I believe it is a bug in the operating system which has caused this and will now reinstall firmware via SE update service.
Yes I use task panel to auto kill apps on sleep but mediascape is on the ignore list, so is not killed. Also this is a recent problem I've had and that is why I cannot blame the task killer. But rather on Sony Ericssons severely delayed and heavily flawed operating system. Let's hope the supposed "update" which is also delayed might be a bit better.
Thanks for trying guys

Just wondering if there is a way to have a longer screen time out period other than 30mins? I only ask as I some times like to watch videos on the web and if you don't touch the screen within the defined "timeout" period the screen will lock.
Has anyone had this issue before?
Also I was wondering if anyone knows of any apps that could lock the screen and/or kill an app after a certain time? A bit like the old "sleep mode" some TV's had? Some times I like to fall asleep while watching youtube vids or other web vids and would prefer that the web browser kills the stream after a set period so i don't kill my download quota.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
ok, well I have done some testing tonight (3.1) and it appears that if you are playing youtube videos in the browser or in the app and even other videos in a video player such as MoboPlayer it wont timeout now.. maybe this was something fixed in 3.1 ....?
I even tested in the website where I first noticed the issue and now it doesn't timeout.
... So that solves one issue. Does anyone know of a way then to lock/sleep timer for android. Anyway seen a basic app that does it? Maybe I might have to write one.. :-/
I use widgetsoid for the first problem. I just hit the screen always on widget. And use the power button to actually turn off the screen.

Hello guys, 2 days ago i finally got the android 7.0 update (three uk) and since then I've spotted some problems with the phone. I have this music player installed its called Musixmatch and one of the features is when your phone start playing music the music player identifies it and puts the lyrics on the screen. So since the update sometimes (mostly when I'm playing videos online or just doing random stuff) lyrics to song "Over The Horizon" by Samsung are popping on my screen ( the song is not actually playing, i can't hear it but the lyrics pops up on the screen which means it was played maybe?) I've attached two screenshoots of this situation.
The other problem is since the update sometimes when i want to watch some videos on youtube after few videos I'm getting this problem saying "there was a problem while playing playback id: (various numbers)" and then i can't play any video online (i haven't tried playing videos from my video library yet) but for example on Facebook when I click on the video it acts like a photo just the thumbnail opens and that's it, can't play it. can't play any video untill i restart the phone then its alright but again after few videos im starting to get this error.
My phone is not rooted and I've never rooted it. Its running on stock rom.
Thanks in advance
Just sounds like MusixMatch needs an update. Not exactly a problem with the phone, but the app.

I agree.
It can take a short while for the developer of an app to push out an update so that it does not clash with the updated firmware. I'd check in the PlsyStore under your Apps.
You may also be able to let the Developer know of the bugs your encountering after the firmware update.
That and I'd try clearing the Apps Cache , System Cache and as a last resort create a fresh backup and Factory Reset.
So today i noticed that its not only Facebook videos nor youtube videos. When its happening i can't even call anyone on Skype or Facebook it just won't let me do it.

Had the same problem when I was on LineageOS, didn't found a solution. It was really annoying so I went back to Touchwiz (superman ROM), and haven't had any problems since then.
I dont know what causes the problem, but perhaps a factory reset will solve it for you. :fingers-crossed:
Okay so I decided to go for the factory reset and it worked for a day or two but today the problem is back. Also I would like to mention that I think today was the first time I've used device maintenance to clean ram and Clean master to turn off apps that eat battery after that the problem came back.

Some people's opinions that such software can cause more harm than good.
Personally I prefer not to use cleaning programmes or battery software either.
The inbuilt options do what I need.

One is it steals your infor and sells it in China.
Second, using it to force stop apps in background causes the phone to active loop and basically use up more battery.
The very presence of Clean Master in the phone is all harm and no good.

Don't use clean master, it's bloat garbage. plus you have that built right into the os. If you MUST use 3rd party once of those, use one that's lighter and less spammy and bloatwarish

I quick looked cm is 16mb, with a whole bunch of bloat and ads and useless features, ahh it's such an awful app. It was bad enough, but then cheetah bought it and it really got bad, same thing happened with the gallery app Quickpic.
Anyway, if it was me, I would absolutely not dl a third party app. The built in stuff does more than a good enough job. But if you must have one, CCleaner 4mb, simple, works, it's light, if there are ads, don't think they are overly intrusive, if there even are any ads. There's a few others that might be OK that are 4mb or under. Look thru the list. But dude, just use the built in option, it does a surprisingly good job.
