Hi there,
i noticed that some apps start itself automatically and run in the background?! That is very annoying. I am observing this behaviour once or twice a day with taskiller advance. Suddenly apps like ak notepad, last.fm and locale are running even though i didnt started them. I guess this is not normal?
mfg smurf
I have noticed this as well on my Rogers Magic (32A). I think that if a process or other app (like email) needs to, it will activate a related process for it to function (touchscreen, keyboard, etc.)
When using AppKiller after having the phone do nothing for a while or just one app, I'll see a few others listed. Naturally everything ends up loading the "touchscreen" process...
I'm not sure if that means SMS will show up when typing an email because they share the keyboard (as if activating one typing app activates them all)... I've never tested that specifically.
It would be cool if it didn't need to do this, but I've become accustomed to just touching the kill all apps button
Cheers,
Chris

that sound reasonable but why is tunewiki starting for no reason or dolphin browser? Could it be bad programming? I noticed this behaviour only with a few apps but its quite anoying. They eat up memory and slow down the phone if i am correct?!

He has a point there, I don't think a third party app would start another third party app, unless they worked in conjunction. As for the problem, try reinstalling the apps.

i already tried. It doesnt matter if it is a stock, cyanogen or dwang rom. Taskkiller is showing me all this selfstarting apps after reboot and then they randomly start with no reason. Most annoying is dolphin browser. Kill it and its back in a matter of seconds eating up precious ram. Tunewiki, AK Notepad stay at least closed...
I've also wondered this and I've noticed Dolphin Browser and the TorProxy app always running, and respawn when they are terminated. I am sure it's because the apps are somehow configured to run as services, so started looking at linux services in adb. In adb shell I checked 'service list' but they were not in there, I wonder if there is a generic service that is there to keep apps alive. I'm interested to know the answer if anyone can throw some more light on it!
I noticed whenever I kill all apps, then for example, switch from 3g to wifi, or 3g to 2g, etc., dolphin browser and imusic will open in the background.... which is annoying.
Why would switching to 3g, 2g, or wifi make these apps open?
curious...

i tried this and after switching 3g and wifi off an on an instance of wifi static, sms/mms and handcent spawned. Even though the usual suspects didnt start most of this automagically starting programms are indeed in need of a data connection (tunewiki, dolphin browser, locale...). We could start a list of self starting programms!?
okay, i am pretty sure now that apps are starting when wifi is on, an then the phone is switched off, then wifi goes to sleep and when the phone is turned on again wifi also and apps which need wifi are starting.
Is this only bothering me? I mean it does deplete ressources/battery life, right? I am using a tasmanager which says that i have about 45mb of free memory. After resuming from sleep with all those self starting apps it is reduced to 25-30mb.
Can anybody confirm that this shouldnt happen?
btw dolphon browser seems to have been fixed. It doesnt start after waking up the phone.
EDIT: okay, i just found this little app:
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-elsdoerfer-android-autostarts-jppi.aspx
maybe this is the solution. I am going to try it.
yeah I have the same issue both on cyan and dwang. on first boot ill run task manager and have a huge list of things, sometimes i have to kill a few times. then ill notice the phone is bogged, and check task manager and have tons of things running again.

My phone app has been slow since I got my Sprint Hero. But lately, it has gotten extremely slow. Almost unusable... it's slow to open, respond to input and ring when someone calls. Any ideas, tips or tricks on what the deal is?
I thought about trying to cut down my contact list to see if that helps, but I really hate the idea of not having all my contacts available on my phone.
Any other ideas to speed this thing up?
Thanks!
I'd try reflashing and if you dont want to go to that extreme I'd try to make sure to reboot the phone daily
Are you using a task manager? Also I find a reboot every 3 or 5 days is usually a good idea unless you clear out some of the memory hogging processes like Gmail storage and such. Generally I'll notice a bit of lag if I fall under 30mb of available memory.
I have considered reflashing, but was trying to see if there were any other solutions first. I've reflashed a few times and keep finding that after while, the phone app consistently slowed down.
I typically reboot about every 3-5 days... lately a little more. Rebooting has been much more effective that task killers.
I've read that some folks had problems with slow contacts, but is it also affecting their phone apps? How many contacts is too many for this thing? Is 130+ contacts too many for this phone to handle?
mine does EXACTLY this ... but only after I pull the phone off of charge.. the charge light stays on.. and bam.... its slow.... only fixes with a reboot
I have a lot of contacts
I have 1400+ contacts and my pone is not too slow.
Thanks
Mario
I like to use the "all people" widget its located under the live folders when adding stuff to your homescreens. Basically it just has a list form of your contacts.
Then when you select one it loads up the people app
I found out that some of the apps, were causing the problem, I started uninstalling apps, I guess most of the apps are made for 1.6 maybe because we are on 1.5 causes some kind of issue. that's just my theory...
In the mean time, you can try that.
I find the phone app very slow in response. It's very aggravating.
I noticed on the Fresh Rom, there is a note that the Location service may be what is causing the slow down in the phone app... I turned off location service yesterday and noticed an immediate response increase with the phone app. I'm not ready to call this a fix yet, but I am going to keep the location service off for a little while longer and see if it helps.
If anyone else is seeing the phone slowness, give this a try and let us know your results...
It does work. And for the sake of clarification, it's a 1.5-wide problem and affects all 1.5 ROMs.
Are you using the Facebook linking? I noticed when I had this feature on the phone and contacts apps. It's a cool feature but not worth the slow down.

Does that mean that Locale wouldn't work? I'd rather deal with the slower dialer if so.
Yes, I am using the Facebook linking. I could see that killing it too. I wish it would just import pictures and info over to my Google contacts. Any ideas on how to do that?
And yes, turning off the location feature will disable general location info from the phone. However, it can be re-enabled from settings...
It's a problem that has to do with apps using seperate threads to check your location, which builds up over time causing the location services to eat clock cycles like Rosi O'Donnel eats candy on Halloween. Disabling location services is a temporary fix, and Flipz thinks he's solved the problem in his 1.1 release by using Android's location services instead of HTC's
I have to agree with the abcdfv, fresh 1.1 has completely eliminated the annoying phone lag for me...amazing work. Now if someone could address the keyboard lag this phone is ready to rock...

Are you linked to a Facebook account and running fresh 1.1, and there is no lag in the people(contacts) app?
I have a linked Facebook account on my Fresh 1.1 ROM and while there is an almost negligible lag in the phone/contacts application still, it is drastically snappier and quick to response compared to the Stock ROM.

I have most of my contacts linked to their respective facebook and flickr pages. Coldsweat says it best as "an almost negligible lag"...still present but not an issue in the slightest (.5 seconds). I am experiencing the same change with the contacts as well.
Give it a shot and post your results...I was very impressed.
FYI, I turned off Facebook sync (synced Facebook pics with SyncMyPix), dropped my slot cycle index to 1 and installed the Fresh 1.1 ROM. Holy crap. This thing is a screaming fast new phone
For those who are rooted (and not aware), Fresh ROM has come a long way and is really, very impressive. It's very fast and some of the interface mods are very attractive.
Palringo is a pretty cool IM'ing app. The first time I installed it I found that my battery was getting chewed up even when the program was not running. I had some other problems with lock up. I uninstalled and after a couple of months I thought I would try it again.
Seems to be the same issues. Battery drain and some general lock up problems.
Wondering whether others have had similar problems.
never locked, using the current version (no beta). battery drain... I don't know really, I open it only when I need to chat, otherwise it stays shut so nobody bothers me
maybe you want to try beta version? it's been updated every 48 hours these weeks

Curious, if I close Palringo using the Task Mgr. I seemingly still show available to my contacts because they can IM me and I get a little envelope on my taskbar. If I touch that I get an option to open Palringo and then I can reply. So it seems that even when it is closed it is functiong somehow.

I think there is an option somewhere to define wether you want it to run in the background or not...
Great programme, i don't use it though anymore since i somehow messed the contact list and now it shows only few of them. The same with the PC client
I updgraded to the latest beta, no lockups at all, about battery I can't tell, I just chatted and messed around a few minutes. Be sure to disable the location service!!
I absolutely LOVE Palringo.
I do not go mobile w/o using this app I don't know if it uses a lot of battery, but I can say that this IM app is much better than a lot of others.
I even went PREMIUM, but sadly it doesn't work with the new MANILA/SENSE screens . They said soon it'll work and just imagine how nicely it will be implemented into 6.5.3 or 6.5.5

well have you checked task manager, cause when you click the "X" to close the program it only minimises it and doesnt close it. thats why your probably still receiving messages.
btw this is one of the best IM apps, although i wish they had implemented MySpace as well :/
Same problem here, battery drainage after I opened Palringo.
I've got this problem since I updated Palringo to version 2.5.6 r39750
If I close Palringo before going to bed I can be pretty sure to not be woken by my phone in the morning... Although sleeping long is pretty sweet, I don't like this behaviour too much.
Closing through the taskmanager (which tells me Palringo doesnt respond) leaves an icon on the taskbar. When I click that icon I get to choose between opening Palringo and closing the program. After closing (or trying to open) the icon vanishes and Palringo isn't listed in the taskmanager anymore. So far so good, but if I don't restart my phone, it will suck down the juice like me at an open bar ...
I didn't find any solution to this. Tracking is turned of.
I'm now trying to:
Close Palringo via the close-button of Palringo.
Set my status to offline before closing.
If you try to kill Palringo using the "x" button or a task manager it doesn't close itself, although it doesn't appear on the list anymore. Check running processes using a specialized process viewer, for example SKTools.
Quickfix: Use the exit menu in Palringo to quit the application.

Hey all,
I've had my (Sprint) Hero for a couple weeks now and enjoying being able to mess around with different roms and tweaks but I've noticed something annoying. I've been using task killers more heavily in the past week or two now and it appears that apps will sometimes open up by themselves.
I had originally not noticed it because I've been playing with the phone so much I generally had the apps open a lot from messing around and showing people different things. Lately I've got into the habit of killing tasks. I'll go to pick up my phone and notice my RAM usage is rather high and I find apps running that I haven't opened.
Most commonly I see:
Google Shopper
Sprint Navigation (Decided to just delete it)
Market
Clock (the alarm app appears when I switch to it)
Weather
com.google.vrec (can't remember name... also deleted)
So ... I was wondering if anyone could tell me why these would be opening by themselves.
Thanks

regarding the apps, i might be wrong but are the apps opening on your home screen?? I noticed that if i closed all apps with a task manager app then when i scrolled through the home screen the apps i have on there seem to take up mem again, (like a weather app attached to the clock) aswell as other apps that are designed to be running all the time like wallswitcher, things like foot prints seems to be running if i have used the camra...
maybe im wrong.. but this is what i noticed.

+1 Very cool app. Thank you for recommending it.
Found a bunch of the apps wanting to start after a connectivity change. I believe that wifi and mobile network connections turn themselves off after being inactive for awhile and start up again after the phone is brought out of sleep or at least do it periodically which explains what's going on.
Apps are always opening by themselves, often I don't even look at the task manager I'll just use one of the "kill all apps" widgets and it'll tell me that it killed 3 or 4 apps, none of which were apps I opened myself.

I rooted to FR008 recently and I've noticed that a lot of apps are starting automatically. Far more than the stock ROM. I use atk to kill then but they restart within moments.
yeah, I might be a little ocd about having things running, but the bigger problem is that a bunch of them start up when I turn on mobile data or wifi. everything competes for bandwidth at once
And so it slows down the app I'm trying to use.
Any recommendations?

when you say they start up, what exactly do you mean? what apps are starting? do they just open and run in the background, or are they forcibly starting and taking over your screen? as for having certain programs start up when turning on some form of data, i've never experienced that particular issue.
don't blindly kill every task thats running, as the android os manages RAM and running apps differently than a windows pc.
i would highly recommend going to this thread and reading the posted links about task managers.
using a task killer on froyo is useless as the apps are restarted rather than killed

Yep. When wifi or 3G data connects it goes crazy. I get a sync icon in the task bar (don't know if it's Google finance or Gmail) and most of the above-mentioned apps plus, Yahoo mail (which I do use) all start up and start trying to grab data.

+1 - Get rid of any automatic task killer apps.
as far as apps opening and running in the background, as i mentioned, its normal. android handles all of its running processes much differently than a normal computer os. having a lot of programs running isn't necessarily a bad thing, as you'll find through reading the linked post.
with apps syncing as soon as you turn data/wifi on, that also is normal. they don't bother trying when data is shut off, but once theres an available connection, they are going to try and grab the most current data so as to be accurate.
do you use most/any of the apps that are running? if not, many apps that can't be removed normally can be removed via this method.

Would one of the "Autostart" apps be able to prevent this from happening? Often, I want to simply jump on and check my mail or the weather. With 3 or 4 apps starting up & competing for data all at once, I have to wait for a minute or so before I get what I want. This is especially annoying when I'm in an area with a weak reception.

I'll get rid of the ones I don't use, but I do use some of them so I don't want to wipe them all out. That's why it would be nice to be able to configure an Autostart app as noted above..

you could turn off background data, or at least check your sync options and make sure programs you don't want trying to auto-sync are un-checked. that way, the only program that would use your data connection would be the one you are using at that moment.
Turn off auto-sync if you don't want them to do that. As previously mentioned, as soon as a data connection is available the apps that are set to auto-sync are going to go out and get the most recent data. Turning that off will just mean you have to sync whatever it is manually. But, it will stop the **** from "starting" automatically, which btw, is normal. Just because they are in the background and "running" (<- according to your task killer) doesn't mean they are "running" in the true sense of the word. It also doesn't mean that they are ALL trying to grab data and suck up bandwidth. Maps shouldn't be starting automatically, gmail is normal because you probably have autosync enabled for it. Task killers are detrimental, would advise you stop using them. Also, I used to be OCD like that as well because of how I am on a computer.
The OCD is hard to get over, but I've stopped using the task killer.
I already had AutoSync disabled, but background data was on.
I am going to try something for a few days..
I have JuiceDefender installed, and one of its' features is to turn data on for 2 minutes, twice per hour. My thinking is that letting those apps start automatically and grab what they need on their own will prevent them from jumping on my bandwidth when I manually turn data on for a one particular need.
The reason I didn't do this before is because I get a pretty large quantity of email on my Yahoo account, and don't want notifications bugging me all the time. I just turned off notifications in Ymail (duh!) and will check it when I want. Presumably, with the 2 minute/30 minute data schedule, I won't even have to turn data on to see my recent emails.
Sometimes I'll be in the browser on a website and the browser will randomly shut down and take me to my homepage. No message pops up saying something went wrong though. I just got my tablet yesterday and already this has happened 7-10 times. Does this happen to other people or am I the only one? Is there anything I can do to fix it?
I have the A501, but my browser has done the same thing a few times. It only seemed to happen when i had a really bad connection though. Don't know if that had any factor in it. Usually its fine though
same here
I think its coding on the website.this happened far less with the new dolphin browser but I like stock browser better.
Giggles are for blonde chics back off there mine
No guarantee that this will work for you, but you could give it a shot.
It very well could be coding on the page as was suggested earlier. Especially if it always happens on a particular site.
For your applications that are force closing or are acting buggy, try this procedure to see if it may correct the behaviors:
Go to Settings >> Applications >> Manage applications >> All tab, select the application that is giving you problems, and press the Force stop button if the application is still running and then to wipe the data press the Clear data and Clear cache buttons as well.
NOTE: THIS WILL RESET THE APPLICATION AND ERASE ANY APPLICATION STORED DATA UNLESS ITS SAVED TO MEMORY.
If this does not correct the issues, then try uninstalling and then reinstall the application.

It seems that a good question here would also be, "What browsers are you all using? And have they all shown the same behavior?"
I have the default Chrome, then I also have Firefox and Dolphin. I know there are others as well.
my tab had this issue as well. i notice that when adblocker is running it doesnt happen near as often. i suspect pop up ads are responsible. your experience with failblog makes me more sure.
Hmmm..... I don't ever have that problem with the Dolphin HD browser.
This happens a least once a day for me. But it happens randomly, on any page. Even if i just try and open the browser to the home page it'll occasionally close on its own.
