Screen Time-out & App Kill Timer? - Xoom General

Just wondering if there is a way to have a longer screen time out period other than 30mins? I only ask as I some times like to watch videos on the web and if you don't touch the screen within the defined "timeout" period the screen will lock.
Has anyone had this issue before?
Also I was wondering if anyone knows of any apps that could lock the screen and/or kill an app after a certain time? A bit like the old "sleep mode" some TV's had? Some times I like to fall asleep while watching youtube vids or other web vids and would prefer that the web browser kills the stream after a set period so i don't kill my download quota.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

ok, well I have done some testing tonight (3.1) and it appears that if you are playing youtube videos in the browser or in the app and even other videos in a video player such as MoboPlayer it wont timeout now.. maybe this was something fixed in 3.1 ....?
I even tested in the website where I first noticed the issue and now it doesn't timeout.
... So that solves one issue. Does anyone know of a way then to lock/sleep timer for android. Anyway seen a basic app that does it? Maybe I might have to write one.. :-/

I use widgetsoid for the first problem. I just hit the screen always on widget. And use the power button to actually turn off the screen.

I use quick settings in the market to keep my screen always on.

Wont auto Rotate?

Is anybody else having a problem, when sometimes my hero will just stop going into landscape mode no matter how long I leave it on its side. It requires me to restart to get it to work again.
Does it regularly happen in specific applications? All the time? Can you recreate it? My Hero did it yesterday for the first time while using the browser but I'm not sure what else was running. I didn't think much of it and exiting the browser and reloading it sorted it
...you don't have auto rotate disabled, do you..?
happened to my hero a few days ago. a friend was playing around with it and looking at different apps. can't really say how or why the autorotation stopped working.
only a reboot fixed it.

cant really say what app it specifically happens in but ill browse the web a lil and play snesoid and text a lil bit then I tried to go back into the internet and stops working it does for any app I try to access. Imma play around with some more to see if there is a specific pattern to it.
On a related note to rotating, is there no way to have it rotate into landscape for both possible directions? (i.e. you normally rotate it from portrait to the left so the chin in on your right hand) but is there no way for it to do the other way?

not every app has auto rotate.

Android 3.2 - No default picker screens!

Hi Guys,
Just hoping somebody can point me in the right direction.
I flashed to 3.01 US stock from UK in order to get the updates. I updated twice to 3.2.
What I'm noticing now is that if I click on a link, that launches an associated app (browser for instance), I used to get a screen jump up and ask which app I wanted to use. So if I'd installed Firefox, Dolphin and got Stock, it would give me the option if I hadn't yet set a default.
Since 3.2 when I click the link, the screen fades out, but the options aren't showing to select which means I can't launch the link/app.
The fix is to uninstall any relevant applications until I only have one app that can launch said link, then reinstall, and I get the option again.
Anyone had this or know how to fix without reinstalling everything?
Hope that made sense....very tired so it might not have done
I had the problem I hope u didn't set Firefox or dolphin as ur default browser what I did was erase all data now I have dolphin and the default drowser all working fine here

This issue has been discussed, but there are two simple ways to solve it without having to reinstall everything.
1) Simply wait and eventually it will fix itself. I know this sounds strange but it will eventually work. I am not generally patient so this one did not work for me.
2) With Autorotate ON, simply rotate the Xoom so that it has to redraw the "picker" screen. Do this when the screen dims and nothing is showing up. I have found that once you do this once for any particular file type you do not need to do it a second time.
I too was reinstalling apps to get the screen to show up, but even that did not always work.
I had the same problem and it seemed to only manifest itself after I re-installed all my apps from Tiamat/Xoom Zone with Titanium Backup. I'm not sure which app was the culprit but after uninstalling Scripter and aLogcat it started working perfect.
Hope this helps!
Same Issues !!
With opera Mobile and MoboPlayer !

Will certainly check these options out. Are you saying that in the first instance, when the screen dims.,...if I left it long enough, it would appear?
Has this been put to Google on their Bugs page,....as Bugs go...it's an annoying one
The Asus Transformer has the exact same problem. makes me think it could be more of a HC3.2 bug now after seeing this thread than device related.
Worse after you think you have fixed the problem every time you turn the device off and then on again on the problem begins again if you have multiple apps that can load a file or link like a web browser (I use multiple). If you have one app or set one app to be the default then you don't have the problem ....with that file or link
Easy to reset by rotating the screen ..but each time you turn on?
Question........
has anyone fixed this with a factory reset?
Factory reset will not fix this . Other browsers , media players and file managers somehow cause the problems .

[Q] Keeping stuff running with screen locked/turned off

Hey all,
So I'm now the proud owner of a brand new Xperia Play, but one thing I'm trying to figure out is why the phone seems to effectively go into sleep mode when you lock the screen.
What I mean is - on my old phone, I could be listening to music, lock/turn off the screen, and the music keeps playing. It continued running in the background when the screen was turned off. On the Xplay however, if I lock/turn off the screen, the music stops. In other words, I can't actually do anything like listen to music or stream radio or anything like that when the screen is locked/turned off. As soon as I turn the screen back on (I don't even need to unlock it, just switch it back on), the functionality resumes. But I don't want the screen on when the phone is in my pocket, because sometimes it still manages to try to dial emergency numbers, not to mention it needlessly runs down the battery.
I've searched through all of the phone settings, and I've tried Googling answers, but I can't find a solution to this anywhere. I want to be able to lock/turn off the screen and continue listening to my music or streamed radio - can this even be done on the XPlay?
Thats strange, I dont have this problem, i often play my music when the screen is off. Are you using and ram or cpu optimisation apps? That may be killing apps when phone is idle?

No...in fact I've installed nothing on the phone yet (waiting for a bigger SD card to arrive), and it's not rooted, so everything is stock standard.
Have you tried listening to streaming radio with the screen turned off?

I just tried now with tune in radio. Worked fine with screen off no issues

Okay I've figured out what the problem is. It's not the screen lock, it's the browser. I'm using the standard browser that came with the phone, but streaming radio stops whenever the browser window is not in focus.
For example, I had the streaming radio going, and pressed the home button, and the same thing happened - streaming radio stopped. The browser should be still running in the background, but for some reason it seems to "pause" any streaming it's doing, until that specific window comes back into focus.
Wow...that's lame.
Any way around this? Unless Android doesn't really have true multitasking and apps in the background are only in a suspended state.

I suggest using an actual radio app. Are you trying to listen to a local station or something?

Yes I'm listening to a local station, but the Xplay doesn't have an FM Radio. A radio app won't help me. Hence why I'm streaming it.
Doesn't change the fact that Android is just doing a pretend "suspend apps in the background until you return to them" multitask, not actual real multitasking. From what I'm reading, this seems to be what the default browser does, and if I download another browser, like dolphin, firefox or opera, I should be able to get around it...can anyone confirm this?

Try Opera mobile. (not mini). If the site your streaming from uses flash, its super resource heavy in the stock browser. Thats why its getting shut down.

There are many apps in the market that allow you to stream Internet sources. A prior poster mentioned the same, they were not referring to FM radio.
I have almost the same but not exactly as that.. When I play music using headphone, then turn off my screen, the effects that I made in equalizer(unlock) app also stops. I tried different players but having the same result.. I'm still figuring out what seems to be the problem..

It does that when theres not enough memory to multitask all the apps you want, however If you were say running pandora, and your browser and something else youd be fine. The site you're using likely uses flash or something else that is resource heavy to play the music. The system doesn't know exactly what the flash program is doing (as it just runs the flash app and then the app runs in the flash sandbox) so if you let the screen shut off or you shut it yourself the system suspends it to free up memory for stuff like text messaging and email to work.
Maybe one of the other browsers has a work around for this but I doubt it. However there may be an app out there that plays internet streams and stays active, I would look for that.

which web video are we talking about? Youtube? using the youtube app or a browser? A bit more details would allow us to attempt a better answer.
Hi there, I have never heard of this happening before. Is your adobe flash player up to date?
every video even the ones I play with the apps and yes my flash is up to date

So do you mean your videos/movies are quitting half way through as well? Does anything happen when they stop play, for example other functions of the table freeze, or does it simply seem to just stop playing?
Its your wifi. After the update, the tablet interprets unlimited DHCP lease time as short, so after a few minutes you will see your tablet's wifi icon turn grey while it reconnects. This interrupts the movie and causes the feed to time out. Change your router's lease time to a defined number such as a week and you should be fine.

pinning an app broken sometimes?

Ok i been looking for a way to allow people to only use the app i opened for them on the phone and remembered that pinning does the same. Now with the new "ask for PIN after unpinning" option available i was hoping to use it for my nieces and nephews whenever they access my phone (certain games) but when i tested it out a few times i noticed that 2 out of 5 times trying to unpin the app that it goes straight to the home page INSTEAD of the lock screen where they have to enter biometrics/pin. anyone else experiencing this issue because if i am going to give my phone to someone i shouldn't have to worry about them exiting the app i pinned and accessing the rest of my phone... any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, if not ill probably try an app if i get the chance
