Hi
I am trying to find out a way of forcing a new device I have just bought (Motorola ES400) to connect to the Vodafone network via 3G only.
I am testing it at work using a work sim, and are experiencing issues with our corporate APN on these types of devices, so I want to try 3G.
Does anyone know of a way either a bit of software, or a *# dial string that I can enter that will give me the option.
I have an HTC TP2 which has Advanced network settings in the connection settings area that allow me to disable HSDPA, but there is nothing on the ES400 that lets me do this.
Thanks in advance.

On my Cingular 8125 I don't have the option to select which tower to connect to. I'd like to be able to select between Cingular Orange and Cingular Blue as Blue has a much better signal at my office. I was able to do this on my Motorolla v551 and it worked great.
But when I go to Settings --> Phone --> Network, there's only a "Find Network" button and I don't have the option to choose which network it actually connects to.
I know the Network tab has network selection features (they've displayed for me a couple times when I was on business travel roaming), they just seem to be hidden when I'm in my home calling area.
Any tips on a reg DWORD I can flip or something to enable network selection?
Unless you have a pre-2002 simcard you won't be able to select any network that isn't already added in the network list.
My friend has a 2125 with pretty much the exact same plan... signed up same time as me, got SIM card same time as me... why would he be able to select networks and not me?
I still think there's gotta be a software solution. :-/
I upgraded my 8125's ROM to the 2.17 version and now I have network select. Also I have a 3G sim card.
I'm on 2.17 as well, and I do NOT have these options! This is a real problem as I have no signal at home or work! I need to be able to select the old ATT tower in this area (which has perfect signal!!)
Someone block the SIM from doing this to us all please!
Hi techies
I have recently brought a Cingular Connection with the data feature. The Data feature includes 3G service as well. However, I don't know how to configure 3G on my Imate-Jasjar. I have read at few places that there is some problem with the frequency bands in which 3G operates. So, just to add the info, I am living in washington in Redmond. Can anyone help me with this problem, How can I configure my Cingular 3G service on my Jasjar?
Thanks
As long as you have your phone settings on auto, it will automatically use 3g where it has a signal. The JasJar uses UMTS 2100, so I hope that's what is available in your area.

The Latest iMate Rom includes Operator CAB files.
You select your operation and it installs the settings for the selected operator in the Phone.
I have T-mobile NL. So by selecting it, it installed my acces point, MMS settings and GPRS Settings.
Other option is to go to the webside of your provider and find the options needed there.

I just checked the Cingular's website and found that Cingular has launched UMTS 1900 .
Is there any other way that I can get my jasjar work with UMTS 1900??
Thanks in advance
I'd like to know if anyone has 3g working on Cingular's network.
I don't think it can happen
Not sure if this is the correct forum but I want to be able to turn of roaming completely. I have a US G1 on the three UK network with the US RC33 installed and root. I have disabled data roaming. Here in the UK we're too small a country to want to roam! Coverage is usually good enough from a single network. However, I occasionally get the little 'R' symbol on the single strength icon and an annoying prompt saying I need to turn data roaming on because I lost connectivity. I have to go into the settings and manually select the "3" network again.
What I want is to either be connected to three UK or not connected to anything at all. Is there a config file I can edit to allow this? Would the UK RC8 firmware do this for me?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Doesn't a 3-UK SIM try to roam onto O2 though?
You could set the phone WCDMA only and NOT roam onto a GSM network.
Use AnyCut to shorcut Activity: Phone Info
From there under preferred Network Type; set to "WCDMA Only"
HELP!! Roaming signal won't go away
I have an unlocked G1, JF1.41 v 1.1 and i just updated to the RC33...but this also happened when i had RC30 , v 1.0...
I put in my canadian Fido sim card and everything works fine but i have that little "R" on top of my signal strength bar...
I think this means its data roaming? if this is the case...it should be okay (even though its going to bother me) because my service provider says my EDGE/Data is disabled (i do not have a data plan, NOR do i wish to incur any data charges.. i'm fine with my free WIFI ) .
However, if this means im roaming on another network, i dont want to be incuring any long distance charges on my phone EVEN when im using my own FIDO network..
I went to settings - about phone - status, and here are my specs (some of them):
Network: Fido
Network Type: EDGE
Service state: In service
Roaming: Roaming
Data Access: Disconnected
i'm pretty much just concerned about the ROAMING part of it... my other friends with G1's are with rogers, don't have that little R..
how do i get rid of that?? please and thanks!
Try manually changing the network in Settings>Wireless controls>Mobile networks>Operator selection
G1, like all GSM phones, will roam onto networks specified on the SIM if it can get a better signal. As long as the relevant operator has a roaming agreement in place, there's nothing to be concerned about, other than the R symbol in the status bar.
Mod: move this over to General discussion please.
I did change it and selected my Fido network (it's the only network available).
Thanks. I've set it to WCDMA only so I'll see how it goes.
Please help??? i still have that little R on top!
After I got home I found my phone had lost its connection. It didn't seem to be searching for the network. I had to go into settings, search for networks and then select three again. Is there any way to control if the phone does a search for networks automatically?
Looks like it reconnects to three on its own after a while. I still get the annoying popup about turning on data roaming though

As has been previously mentioned, Three will "roam" onto another network if it goes out of Three's own 3G network coverage because Three does not run its own 2G network.
However, it isn't O2 anymore, it is Orange as of late 2006/2007. I *believe* that you won't be charged any more if you use data whilst "roaming" on Orange, so whilst you are in the UK it is quite safe to allow data roaming, but I would be inclined to check this with Three.

Dave
hello,
after searching on "3G" in the forum, i seems that the problems are just the opposite to my question, they all want 3G to be turned off.
Now I want to connect to 3G (with the "G" icon on the staus bar).
My problem is that it always connect on "edge", with the "E" icon in status bar and when I want to make a video call, it always says that there is no connection to 3G so I can't make videocall.
Anyone knwos how to activate 3G?
I looked into the connections, but I don't want to mess in it without knowing what I do.
BTW I'm in Europe (Belgium).
Thanks
You fell into the same trap I did when I first got a Windows Mobile phone.
G means GPRS and is the lowest, simplest connection speed.
G = GPRS. "Normal" internet speed (9.6-14.4kbps)
E - Edge. "Enhanced" internet speed (normally 48kbps, but can be higher)
3G = 3G internet speed (128-384kbps). Also allows video calls.
H = HSDPA. "Mobile broadband" speed. (1.8Mbps, 3.6Mbps or 7.2Mbps depending on operator).
You'll want to go to:
Start > Settings > Connections > Advanced Network
Make sure that HSDPA/HSUPA is enabled
From then on, it depends on the signal in your area. If you find that you're having a problem getting and maintaining a 3G or H signal, you might need to get an updated SIM from your operator. I got a new SIM from O2-UK and it solved my connection problems immediately.
I see that HSDPA/HSUPA is enabled.
Could it have something to do with the settings in connections (instead of advanced network settings)?
I will also check with my provider (sim card)
Thanks for the reply
i cannot connect to the internet not using wifi. i do however h an H symbol next to my signal. i dont get why i have the hsdpa but cannot connect. i've tried anything i can think of.
*i can't turn data connection on in my comm manager, it automatically disconnects and says wap.cingular not working or gprs not working somthing like that.
*in the connection settings i pick media net wich is automatically picks att but still won't
*in settings/personal/phone i left if auto defualts for bands
*settings/connections/advance network i even tried to put it to hsda ONLY won't work
the only new lead im getting is this Zenith post saying he got new sim card so now it's working. that's all im getting at now. but im even skeptical about that
If you are not getting the 3G or H icon then you either have no coverage or an incompatible SIM.
If you can't connect to the internet you either have incorrect settings on your phone, or your network aren't allowing you on their APN.
Suggest in all cases phoning your network to get clarification.

Hi,
I have a problem with choosing a network when abroad on my diamond 2.
I go to Settings and then Network and from the drop-down, I choose manually, which means that I choose network manually when I am abroad but it always chooses for me and never displays choices to choose between as it does in e.g. Nokia.
How do I do that on my Diamond? Is there any chance that I keep my phone connecting to one network and never on any other networks when I am abroad?
The thing is that in Denmark, it is free to use network 3 as well as in Sweden, neighbour country. So It would be nice to have it connecting to network 3 and no others. It drops 3 sometimes when network is low or lost and connects to next network automatically even though I choose manual? Anybody can help with that please?
