Hello everyone! Noob here, a couple Q's - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I just bought a used Mytouch 4G today, this phone is seriously awesome!! I used to have an Xperia X10, but I sold it to get this one!. Now flashing stuff on the X10 is super simple, everything is mostly one click! Here though, theres s-off, flashing radios and whatnot, recovery, etc.
Anyways, the phone I bought came with the crappy tmobile sense froyo, so I used visionary to permaroot and one of these tutorials to do s-off and get clockworkmod with rom manager! Now I have a question, about the radio do I have to flash it before I flash a new rom or after? Also do I just flash the new rom with recovery and i'm done, or are there any extra steps needed? Also is the kernel the same way?
Thanks!

radio is flashed through the bootloader, renamed as PD151IMG.zip. i would suggest the panache radio, but all phones are different, and each have different results with different radios. doesn't matter when you flash the radio. all radios for the MT4G are found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059347
flashing roms: before you flash a rom, BE SURE TO CHECK THE MD5SUM!!
this can be done using the free mand5 app from market. next, move the ROM.zip to your SDcard, reboot into clockworkmod recovery, DO A NANDROID BACKUP and DO A FULL WIPE.
full wipe is:
-wipe data
-wipe cache
-wipe dalvik cache (under advanced menu)
at least twice
after doing the full wipe, just select the ROM.zip and flash it.
first boot usually takes longer than usual.
flashing kernels is similar, but easier:
-DO NANDROID BACKUP
-wipe cache
-wipe dalvik
-flash kernel.zip
enjoy pure awesomenesss!!!
also, i would suggest you check out Virtuous Unity, a VERY nice rom created by the Virtuous team. link is here: http://www.virtuousrom.com/

oh yes I've had my eye on the virtuous rom, it looks very nice indeed! Thanks!

just one question, how do I boot into bootloader without using adb? Is it volume down+power??

if you have rom manager (you said you did), in rom manager there's an option to reboot into recovery. from there if you flashed one of the custom roms, most of them when you choose to power off have an option to reboot into recovery as well.

Thanks for the help everyone! I've gotten a new radio, the unity rom, and the demonspeed kernel running at 1.6 ghz!!
One more thing, is it normal to have a laggy homescreen in the sense rom? Like the drawer is super laggy too!

sometimes it might lag a little. but most of the time, it shouldn't lag one bit.

comparing the speed of sense to AOSP, it's gonna be a bit slower pretty much most of the time, but it's still pretty smooth and not that laggy all things considered
gratz on having fun with your phone

[Q] Im new and lost

I just had my dad do a full root on my evo just for the wireless tether. i really love the options that have opened up and want to pursue them. i want to be able to install boot animation, lock bars, and themes. the problem i am having is i really dont know where to start. ive done alot of research on things but doesnt really tell me exactly what i need to do. i have been told that i need to get a new rom to be able to use custom themes and lockbars and stuff like that. with that i was told i need to do a nanoid backup. so what i am asking from you guys (the expertts with alot of patience for noobies is step be step instructions on what i need to do. i dont even know how to do a nanoid backup. tell me what actions i need to take and what apps i will need to make all this happen. please help me all the other forums tell me is stop being a noob are use the search feature. i just dont think other peoples posts are exact;y what i am asking for so please give me help so i wont be such a noob and have a custom look on my evo.
I'll help you start by flashing a custom recovery which will allow for nandroid backup, data wipes, and flashing custom roms.
1. Download Rom Manager from the Market
2. Open Rom Manager and flash ClockworkMod recovery, which is the first option in Rom Manager. You can use this recovery, which should be installed if your father ran UnRevoked 3.2 to root your EVO.
3. However, I recommend scrolling down to the bottom of Rom Manager and flashing the alternate recovery, Amon Ra. This is the one I prefer to use to flash my roms and whatever else.
4. Grab Quick Boot from the market for easy reboot into recovery or you can just power off then hold vol down + power on to boot into HBOOT. From HBOOT, you can scroll to select recovery, which should put you into Amon Ra.
5. In recovery, you should see Backup/Restore option. Click this and do a nandroid backup. Let it run through until it states completed.
6. Return to main recovery menu, and goto wipe. Select wipe data/factory reset, cache and dalvik cache. You can do each wipe twice just to be on the safe, if you like.
7. Once nandroid and full wipe done, you can select USB-MS to connect your SD card to your PC to load a custom rom onto the root of your card. Once loaded, just disconnect the SD card by hitting power button and return to main recovery menu.
7. If your custom rom is on the SD card root, you should see the rom zip file when you select flash zip from card. Scroll to the rom and select it. Let the rom flash process complete and then reboot the phone.
8. This should take possibly 3-5 minutes to completely load the custom rom onto your phone.
9. Hopefully, everything worked out and the phone boots into the custom rom's homescreen or handsfree setup.
WoW
WoW i dont even know where to begin on telling you how big of a help you was, you answered my post exactly how i needed it answered for me to understand it and be able to do it......thank you soooo much
I do have an additional question to this, what custom rom should I use? Will it have 2.2? And are there tutorials how to install themes? Do I need to have sense to install these themes?
I really appreciate your assistance!!!
Hit up the development forum and check out all the roms. Look at the screenshots and features. When you find one you like, grab it. Check out Fresh 3.3 and Myn's Warm twopointtwo. I've used those both in the past. Those both have Sense and Myn's ROM is already themed (and looks nice in my opinion). Themes are flashed the same way as roms and the descriptions will tell you if they're Sense-compatible.
Remember to make nandroid backups frequently. Find a rom, get it set up to your liking, nandroid, and then get another rom and do it all over again until you decide on one.

choice of rom is up to you, most you'll see will be 2.2 which you'll want for full flash support, to be able to install themes you will NEED and (deodexed) rom. Look for deodexed roms, and there are plenty. A lot of themes will be flashable zips which you install the same way you install a rom (through recovery-install zip from sdcard-choose zip from sdcard).

Thanks you guys! I sorta figured out how to apply themes using the recovery screen after boot up, but it caused the screen to go black HAHA. But anyways, I couldn't find a definitive answer to what I was looking for. I will check out the deodexed roms, thanks!
I one more EXTREMELY important thing about themes, do wipe cache and dalvic twice, but DO NOT WIPE DATA. That is probably why your screen went black. Eithe that or the rom was not de odexed

[Help] Did I Brick My Mytouch4g?

MODS: I am unsure of where to post this so sorry for the trouble.
So I work for Tmobile and love showing off my rooted mytouch 4g in all its glory.
So I requested a warranty exchange and got a TAIWAN VERSION w/ GOOD SCREEN in return. Like Day and Night.
Upon Receiving my warranty exchange phone it was 2.2.1. I attempted the same Visionary Root Process, (however was there some extra file i needed to DL? i forget)
After rooting my new phone, S-Off, I had flashed FAUX stock kernel 0.4.0b.
THEN THIS HAPPENS:
I cant get past the mytouch 4g splash screen. The first logo that appears. It gets stuck or bootloops. I can HBOOT and get into recovery 3.0.0.5
This is all i can do...i already asked for another warranty exchange...but in the meanwhile..how can i fix this problem or what did i do wrong?
ALSO can you backup one mytouch 4g and load it back up on another mytouch 4g with the same sd card? Thanks!
I had this problem with my MT4G when I flashed his kernal. It seems that his kernals are not designed to work with every 4g device. I hope you did a nandroid backup on the device. I was never able to get past the mytouch splash screen with his kernals

Well, at since you can get into recovery there should be a number of things you can do to get your phone to boot.
Download a new ROM to flash, if you are on clockwork 3 then you need CM7.
Clockwork has usb drive ability, turn it on, transfer the ROM then flash.
If you can get into HBoot or Recovery on ANY phone, you're safe. Hell, if you can't get into HBoot, your phone wouldn't even start up since HBoot is basically the equivalent to BIOS.
THE VERSION OF CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY YOU USE IS CRITICAL!!!
The version you are using is for Android 2.3 only.
Flash a v2 Recovery with adb or fastboot and reinstall your kernel, or install CM7.

I am trying to do this. How would I get my comp.to.recognize the devise. Sometimes it says mass storage device detected sometimes not. So I need cm7 rom to b able.to boot?

If you've ever connected it via USB, it should have installed the drivers automatically (at least on Windows). I think the ADB driver only installs if you had "USB Debugging" checked. Mass Storage usually only refers to mounting the SD card; the driver for ADB is different. Look for something like Android Phone or Android ADB Interface in your device manager (again assuming Windows).
If you have ADB set up, try running the adb devices command. If it spits back the serial number of your phone, you should be okay to proceed.
Don't exchange the phone, fix it...
Just use another phone to copy the latest CM7 to the root of your sdcard and flash, if that doesn't work do the same thing with a PD15IMG.zip file to the root of your sdcard, hboot and restore to stock.
I have no problem with someone doing a warranty exchange for a hardware issue, but if you break your phone, don't make someone else pay for it...
i ended up solving the problem by doing what some of you had suggested. I flashed CM7 and WAH-LaH! when the phone got past the splash screen into CM7 i was on cloud 9.
Now What are the benefits of running CM7? as opposed to going back to Sense w/ Faux kernel again?
PLUS
how would i go back to a sense type rom again? would i go back into rom manager and flash a different recovery?
XDA you have been so helpful!
___bonus__also the haptic feedback on this phone was not as strong as my original..though idk if its just me or not..should i call tmobile and stop shipment of the OTHER phone? how is it i have a taiwan version plum W/ good screen?
There are no Sense-based Gingerbread (Android 2.3) ROMs available now ... Best practice its to make a Nandroid backup of CM7 with your installed CWM Recovery, then flash a version 2.x of CWM Recovery to install any Froyo (Android 2.2) based ROM.

Good to see it is working.
Its mostly personal preference at this point. Sense on the MT4G is pretty responsive and has some nice features. CM7 has its own tweaks and features. You loose the sense widgets but many can be replaced with alternatives in the market. You gain and loose relative in both ROMs So try out both and decide.
Use ROM Manager app to flash a new recovery. One of the 2. versions, then flash a froyo based ROM.
what about flashing kernels..are those "roms"
is cm7 itself pretty battery efficient? i still downloaded setcpu and set it to 11---.
2.XXX ..u mean like 2.5.1.4 for example..sorry not lookin at the phone atm.

i also dl the cynogyn updater or wut not..wut url do i add for themes?

Kernels are not ROMs, the kernel is the underlying software of an OS. The kernel talks to the hardware and lets different parts of the OS communicate. Kernels are ROM specific, or Framework specific. A sense ROM can not use a AOSP kernel and vice versa.
CM ROMs can be good on battery, or not. It all depends on personal use and how you set it up.
That is a good recovery to use when flashing sense ROMs.
Not sure about the updater. If it is the one I am thinking, it hasn't been updated in a while. I think it has been abandoned in favor of ROM Manager. CM updater did come in some of his older ROMs, before ROM manager became the norm.
So I can or cannot flash fauxs kernel. I really liked the smartass profile. Also..I'm on cm 7 now...y do I get force closes on my market.

Try fix permissions. If that does not work, do a full wipe (factory reset). If that still does not work, try re-flashing the ROM.
If you flashed a new kernel before you started having issues, this may fix it, or you may need to wipe caches and re-flash the kernel.

GB ROMs from leak, help please

I tried to flash Xboarder 1.1.1 and RNK pure GB ROMs today. Both give me a barrage of FC messages after I flash with ROM manager. I've been able to restore to a good backup of my original rooted stock ROM so if they don't work no biggie, but I was hoping to try these out.
I had successfully flashed xboarder 1.0.1 last week, but had GPS issues so I restored to stock. I updated ROM manager recently and I'm curious if that's related. When I flash I check the new option to wipe dalvik cashe, clear data, and don't check the backup current rom because I have many redundant backups of that already.
Ideas anybody?

I would also recommend flashing directly from CWM and not from rom manager it has been known to cause issues for some people. And give the superwipe a try you can find in the dev forum.

What's the difference between rom manager and clockwork directly? Clockwork made rom manager, no? The two names are not interchangeable? how does one directly flash from clockwork then? Is that done from the recovery menu I get when I volume down + power the phone?

In theory, there should be no difference between flashing through rom manager and cwm and 90% of the time rom manager probably works. But on occasion it does cause issues for some people.
And yeah to get in to cwm hold power and volume down which put you in the boot loader menu. Then using the volume keys to highlight recovery then use the power button to select. Your phone will the boot in to cwm recovery.

super wipe worked! thanks for the support!

[Q] rooted EVO, but cant flash most roms =(

so i went to install the newest infected rom with sense 3.0 and was very excited about it. repartitioned my card with RA, wiped, and installed and got boot loops upon sense startup. tried a dozen combinations of superwiping, cache/dalvik wipe, double flashing, fix uid, etc but no luck.
i then decided to try the BOS kingdom rom and get the same problem, boot loops as soon as sense loads. maybe i wasnt destined to install sense 3.0 roms.
ok, so i decide to try KingsROM shift4g blakk rom. its a sense 2.x rom so it should be ok, right? nope! boot loops as soon as sense loads up.
at this point, i suspect its my sd card. i use a 1gb without any repartitioning and try KingsROM again. still same problem. the only roms i can actually get flashed are the latest Fresh and Warm 2.2.
i think the problem may be my phone and not the sd card or rom.
details:
003 with nova panel, S-OFF with unrevoked forever
HBOOT 2.10.0001
RADIO 2.15.00.11.19
i have tried RA 2.3 and CW 2.5.0.7 (the newer version doesnt support some sort of scripting so i use an older version). i also superwipe 2-3x before EVERY flash and sometimes wipe cache/dalvik AFTER a flash.
does anyone have any suggestions on what i should do or try? any input is appreciated and i thank you all in advance.
Those roms all use the same kernel, try flashing the rom then netarchys latest kernel, youll lose cam but I can almost guarantee it will boot.

wow that certainly stinks since i use the camera a lot. i will definitely try it for the sake of trying. i wonder why it wouldnt be able to handle a kernel especially if its a stock htc one iirc.

There are several roms with what you are looking for in the development forum.

Yes they should install like normal. Check the OP's for the ROM though. All require hboot .92 and CWM 3.0.0.x.
I recommend giving JoelZ's kingdm rewind 3d a go. very smooth
Yeah I'm still using the old cwm and I have never messed with cwm3 so how do I install the new newest cwm.

You can use rom manager or you can flash the recovery manually in hboot. Files at www.dougpiston.com
RE: Multiple wipes

Not trying to start a big debate, just pointing out that wiping multiple times isn't doing anything but adding more time to your flashing process. Hopefully this helps.
I only wipe everything once, flash vr superwipe, then flash rom. Works fine on all.

You obviously need to wipe three times and then flash the ROM twice. And reboot about 4 times. One each is not enough. Pull your battery a couple of times as well.
Is installing the new cwm the same as flashing a radio.
Dinc
If you take the time to read what I linked, it explains everything. When you're telling your recovery to wipe, it is a routine run within code. Doing a secondary wipe or even a third is just running the same exact command again. Logically, why would CWM run the same exact command differently, necessitating multiple wipes to get the same result?
There's no "randomness" built into the recovery that would result in the command not being run, or run differently, when you select it.
Its not like a physical action, where the more you wipe, the "cleaner" it gets. Again, it is a routine run within code, and it is not variable or random.
If there was any perceived benefit to the wiping procedure that you mentioned, I'm willing to bet that its due to wiping the /system and /boot partitions, which isn't done when you wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache in the main menu. This is something that should be, and usually is, included in the rom's updater script, but may be forgotten by the dev. Some people have mentioned that recovery version 3.0.0.8 does not work well with AMOLED incredibles. I can't speak for that myself, but in the event that there is a problem, the resolution would be using the 3.0.0.7 recovery, not wiping multiple times.
And I don't think you're correct in assuming that "all the devs" recommend the multiple wipe approach, I think you'll see that plenty do not, including the cyanogen dev who wrote the article I linked to (BTW, he is the one that got CM7 on the Droid X, a phone with a locked bootloader, so I'm assuming he might know what he's talking about.)
That is all..

They are totally different, CWM is a recovery, radios are well, radios. They are flashed the same way though (in bootloader).
